The perfect introduction to
jazz by the genre's most legendary record label! Founded in 1939,
Blue Note was a pioneer in jazz's golden age, serving as a breeding
ground for legends such as Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Art Blakey
and Kenny Burrell. Even today the label continues building its
legacy with contemporary acts like Norah Jones and Medeski, Martin
& Wood. This single disc compilation offers the perfect
introduction to both Blue Note and the genre for which this label
became an unarguable mark of quality!

The genius of At Last...The
Duets Album is in its matchups and cross-pollinations. If
producer Walter Afanasieff weren't already a much sought after
music man--check out his arrangements here if his talents are
unfamiliar--he might have built a brilliant career as a modern-day
cupid. These are covers with a what-if factor (what if Brian
McKnight covers Wham!? What if Richard Marx covered Elton John?)
you don't want to miss: LeAnn Rimes wraps Bryan Adams' anthem-y
"(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" in rainy-day heartache; Yolanda
Adams reaches for the stars in a rendition of R. Kelly's "I Believe
I Can Fly" as inspiring as the original; Barbra Streisand waltzes
through "The Music That Makes Me Dance" like the years since her
heyday haven't mattered; and Earth, Wind & Fire dig the depth
out of Raphael Saadiq's "The Way You Move." This, of course, is to
say nothing of the sensuality brought to these collaborations by
the goldilocked sax man himself. As with all Kenny G projects, the
music is smoother than a frappuccino and oddly suited to a soap
opera living room set; its swirls, swells, and crescendos seem
meant to fall on bejeweled ears in pretty, carefully appointed
spaces only. All-instrumental tracks like "Don't Know Why" with
David Benoit and "Pick Up the Pieces" with David Sanborn have a fun
look-at-me-sharing-the-spotlight quality, but in the end Chaka Khan
puts across her point most convincingly: She, not Christina
Aguilera, should have sung "Beautiful" to begin with. -Tammy La
Gorce

Jimmy LaValle's varied experience
includes stints with Tristeza, The Locust, GoGoGo Airheart, The
Blackheart Procession, and Sigur Ros. "Into The Blue Again" sees
LaValle handling the bulk of the vocal and instrumental duties.
After tracking, he took the concentric billows of feathered
keyboards, filmy strings, and chiseled drums to Iceland for three
weeks of mixing to tape to maintain Brian Eno-informed
translucence. Having shared so much time and space with others on
the road, LaValle proves, with this personally charged release,
that The Album Leaf resonates most profoundly when he goes it
alone.

After toiling for years as
an underground cult favorite with a rabidly devoted fan base, Irish
rock band U2 finally broke through to mainstream success on the
strength of their 1987 opus THE JOSHUA TREE. Released in March of
that year, THE JOSHUA TREE became U2's first number-one album and
won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The record's crossover
appeal stems from its emotional exploration of universal topics
such as love ("With or Without You"), death ("One Tree Hill"), and
spiritual longing ("I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For")
without sacrificing any of the trademark social consciousness of
the band's earlier albums ("Bullet the Blue Sky," "Mothers of the
Disappeared"). This episode of the CLASSIC ALBUMS series details
the making of U2's chart-topping album through interviews with band
members, archival film footage, and live performances. Rating: Not
