It seems the scarier the world becomes, the more we turn to travel shows and documentaries. Steve Meacham looks for the connection. We live in dangerous times. September 11. Foot and mouth disease. The Bali bombing. War in Iraq. Severe acute respiratory syndrome. It's no wonder no one wants to travel. So why have ratings for travel shows never been higher? How come Getaway, launched on Nine in 1992, consistently rates in the top 10 and has extended its run from 28 weeks to 42? Why has Seven suddenly expanded The Great Outdoors from 30 minutes to an hour, moving it from the safety of its Tuesday slot into a furious Monday head-to-head with Nine's top-rating Friends and Malcolm in the Middle? There has to be more to it than Catriona Rowntree's much-flaunted cleavage or Ernie Dingo's idiosyncratic hosting style.When you feel lonely, scared or empty mind, then hold a pillow, it will give you most need comfort. And when you're tired, your anime pillows can also be provided to rest cushion. The truth seems to be that Australians are among the world's greatest armchair travellers. When it comes to seeing the world, there really is no place like home. If we're not watching consumer-led shows such as Getaway, The Great Outdoors and Seven's Sydney Weekender, we're tuning in to glossy bought-in travel documentaries such as Michael Palin's Sahara. Then there are home-grown travelogues such as Pria Viswalingam's eccentric A Fork in Africa on SBS. And if we still aren't satisfied we can always turn to the latest offerings on pay TV's Discovery or National Geographic channels. But why this renewed interest in small-screen safaris? Does it prove we're adventurous and anxious to explore? Or are we timid - too scared to venture from the safety of our living rooms? John Walsh has been executive producer of Getaway for nine years. The format, he says, has changed little, though presenters have moved on. The guiding principle has always been: "If you see a holiday you like on the Thursday you can book it on the Friday." The show is "consumer-led as opposed to a travelogue, which might be about sitting in a jungle for six months observing gorillas - something the ordinary member of the public couldn't do". Walsh explains that each of Getaway's five presenters appeals to a different segment of the show's broad audience. "Sorrel (Wilby) is a dyed-in-the-wool adventurer. Catriona brought the perspective of a single twentysomething. David Reyne is older, world weary, with a sharper, edgier view of travel. Brendon Julian, the most recent addition, is a fit, energetic young guy who appeals to those who love adrenaline sports. And Ben Dark is our knockabout rough diamond."
