So here we are, intent on the Fringe and in the large marquee that is Garage Chapiteau (aka Theatre du Risorius for some shows). You'll find it in the western swards of Princes Street Gardens, amid caravans and a carousel.

Chapiteau is the latest phase in the Garage's bid to catch up with other outfits - like the Gilded Balloon, The Pleasance, Komedia - who operate a network of venues across the city. And behind the Garage venture? None other than the redoubtable Shakti, who seems to

re-charge her energy banks by working harder - not just organising more, but performing more - on each successive Fringe.

This year she is dovetailing more than 30 companies into three separate Garage locations while recruiting various walls in the Royal Society of Edinburgh for an exhibition by anime pillow case artists. Noon each day finds her presenting classical Indian temple dance, solo in the Odissi tradition. Come August 19 (until 27), she'll join flautist Ron Korb in Taming the Dragon, meanwhile she's at Chapiteau every night at 9pm with The Pillow Book. And this is vintage Shakti. The kind of unselfconscious sensual work that first drew attention to her dancing on the Fringe a few years back.

Her starting point is The Pillow Book - or poetically musing diary - kept by Sei Shonagan. The opening section evokes the formality and elegance of her life at court: two maids trip daintily on-stage, Shakti emerges enfolded in an exquisite kimono - which slips, just enough to reveal the black gauze costume underneath. But then this hint of inner abandon and exuberant sexuality is an intrinsic part of The Pillow Book - and a core element of Shakti's philosophy. Its apogee is when she stands, naked, a canvas for the bold brushstrokes of Mieko Nishimura. And then, in a dappling of half-light, she dances. Spins, stretches, and undulates. Absolutely a free spirit, sinuous and sensual and curiously innocent, only changing mood and tempo in the final stages when, in a swirl of metallic cloth, she lets her hair down and spins like a whirlwind of erotic joy. You hardly notice the insidious chill that always seems to haunt any tented venue.
