(More customer reviews)John Trumbull
(1756-1843) made it his mission to commemorate the great events of
the American Revolution.Starting in 1785 he began a project of
thirteen canvases depicting scenes from the American Revolution. He
only finished eight, of which the most famous is certainly "The
Declaration of Independence, 4 July, 1776."But most of the rest of
them are recognizable to students of American history, which would
certainly be the case with "The Death of General Warren at the
Battle of Bunker's Hill, 17 June, 1775."
Dr. Joseph Warren was the family doctor for John and Abigail Adams,
and when the Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament in 1765
he published several articles in Boston papers opposing the
legislation. As a result he became close friends with Samuel
Adams.Warren continued to publish articles attacking Britain's
policies, protecting his family by signing them "A True
Patriot."But his identity was soon well known regardless and
Loyalists in Boston called him "the crazy doctor."Before the Battle
of Bunker Hill, Warren was best known as the man who signaled Paul
Revere from the Old North Church for his famous midnight ride.In
the spring of 1775 he was named second Major General of the
Massachusetts militia, despite his complete lack of military
experience (he tended to the wounded on the road back from
Lexington). When General Artemus Ward ordered William Prescott to
fortify Bunker Hill, Warren joined the troops although Prescott
wanted him to stay out of the action. His arrival heartened the
troops and he was one of the last to retreat when he was shot and
killed. His death was arguably the most significant of the
Revolution for the American side as Warren would have been
considered one of the major Founding Fathers had he survived.
Trumbull had joined the Connecticut First Regiment in the spring of
1775 and his talent for drawing was used to produce accurate maps
of enemy positions and he became an aide-de-camp to George
Washington. It is believed that Trumbull observed the British
attacks on the colonial fortifications on Breed's Hill in
Charlestown. In addition to sketches made on the battlefield at a
later day, Trumbull had collected facts from various sources and
persons who had fought in the battle. It is believed that Trumbull
probably copies the portrait of Copley for his likeness of General
Warren, while that of Major John Pitcairn was based on his son, Dr.
Pitcairn of London, and Lieutenant William Pitcairn was probably
based on his brother Thomas. The portraits of the British officers
(Howe, Clinton, and Small) were painted in London between 1784-1786
either from life of from existing portraits.
Trumbull's painting represents the pivotal moment when the
Americans had run out of ammunition and the third assault by the
British troops forced the colonials to retreat.During those final
moments General Warren was killed by a musket ball through the back
of his head.As Warren expires, being held by an American soldier, a
British grenadier tries to run him through with a bayonet.Standing
above Warren holding a muskett is Major Knowlton; on the left is
Israel Putnam waving his sword, with William Prescott sitting below
him.Colonel Small is shown seizing the musket of the grenadier and
behind him is the mortally wounded Major Pitcairn of the British
marines, falling into the arms of his son. At the feet of Colonel
Small is the dead body of Colonel Abercrombie.Behind the principal
group are see Generals Howe and Clinton, the British commanders. The
figure with the fancy hat in the bottom right is Lt. Grosvenor,
with Peter Salem behind him.
The painting was done in the studio of Benjamin West in London (and
it clearly owes a debt to West's own "Death of Wolfe at Quebec")
and completed by March of 1786.The painting now hangs in the Yale
University Art Gallery in New Haven, as a result of an indenture
Trumbull signed in 1831 to sell 28 eight of his paintings and sixty
miniature portraits to the university.IN return Trumbull, then 75
years old, received an annuity of $1,000 for the rest of his
life.Yale also constructed a fireproof building, designed by
Trumbull, to house his paintings on campus. The original oil on
canvas painting measures 19 3/4 x 29 3/4 inches, which makes this 8
x 12 inch reproduction on a 11 x 14 art poster, slightly smaller
than half size.

(More customer reviews)This is a fine
print of a great piece of art (referring to Amazon/Shopzeus
version). You don't need to know the story of the Tempest to see
what is going on in this 1916 John William Waterhouse.Miranda sits
on the shore watching the wrecking of a large ship in a tempest
with surrender and complacence for it's fate while she herself
seems oblivious to what the tempest might do to her.The painting is
composed in such a way that, from a distance, it actually looks
like a peaceful ocean scene.
As for this particular print, the colors seem to be about right and
the paper used is 20 lb+ glossy photo. There may be some slight
cropping, I don't have a reference to confirm that. The print is
either based on the original or a very fine reproduction. The size
is a "poster size", so you might find that obtaining a frame is a
bit difficult (they do exist or you can have one made).Though it is
a print of an oil on canvas painting, because of the glossiness of
the print, it looks best in a somewhat modern frame under glass (a
matted frame (I can never remember the proper term)also improves
the look greatly). It can also be at home in an apartment or dorm
treated just like a poster and pinned to the wall.
The price on this print is spot on.A person printing one for
themselves will spend just as much on the paper (not to mention the
ink, use of a wide format printer, and obtaining a high resolution
image).
It's a great conversation piece and, if you haven't already done
so, an inspiration to delve into Shakespeare's story
Incidentally:
Miranda and the Tempest (AKA, "Miranda, the Tempest") is a 1916
painting by John William Waterhouse (I guess I said that
already). It appears to be a revisit to a previous J.W. Waterhouse
from 1875 called simply "Miranda", but with a more detailed and
darker theme. The original of this painting sits in a private
collection as of this writing.
Oil on canvas reproductions of Miranda and the Tempest can fetch as
high as 5000 USD.Reproductions in the approximate size of the
offered product above go for anywhere from 400 to 125 USD.
(Don't confuse a reproduction with a print).
It's actually hard to review products like this because of personal
tastes - so I hope this was helpful.

palette I used a porcelain platter divided with caulk. It was
effective, but now that I have used the Tom Lynch palette, I
realize what I was missing! The palette is large and very heavy,
meaning that it will not move around at all, no matter how hard I
jab my brush at it.The surface is smooth, the paint will not bead,
but spread smoothly, and it wipes perfectly clean with just a
tissue. It also comes with a plastic cover and a strip of sticky
foam to place around the lip of the lid so that it fits snugly onto
the palette.I keep a wet sponge in my palette when I am not
painting, and my paints stay moist.I am very pleased with this
purchase and would recommend it for a watercolorist looking for a
great studio palette. This will last longer than your lifetime.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the
jungle version of this kit.First, let me say that the video they
produced to guide you says you can do all this in a
weekend.NOT!Especially if you have anything else to do like
laundry, eat a meal or watch a toddler. The instructions are GREAT -
but three weekends later I am still not finished.
Also of note - if you have 'orange peel' walls, the stencils really
don't stick very well which makes the painting process take way
more time that if you had a flat surface to stick to. It also means
that the edges of your characters will not be nice and
smooth...because your wall is not nice and smooth. This means you
have to do a lot of touch up painting when you finish with all the
stenciling.
Although it seems like a deal that they supply the brushes when you
purchase directly from their site, the sponges just don't work as
well as real bristle brushes and again - it takes you a while to
figure that out so that increase the amount of time it takes to do
the painting.
Overall, I LOVE how may son's new paint job looks - he even helped
on a couple of pieces of it and he is 6.However, don't think it
will be done in one weekend. We had to take everything out of his
room and it has been sitting in my office now for almost a
month.Inconvenient to say the least.
I did however, rate this at 4 stars as these are all minor compared
to the cool room my son now has!Just be forewarned to schedule a
good deal of time to make it happen.

(More customer reviews)Katsushika Hokusai
(1760-1849), the Japanese painter and wood engraver born in Edo
(now Tokyo), is considered one of the outstanding figures of the
Ukiyo-e, or "pictures of the floating world" ("everyday life"),
school of printmaking. After learning the new and popular art of
woodcut printmaking, Hokusai produced maybe 30,000 color prints and
book illustrations during his life, most of which represented the
lives, traditions, and legends of the Japanese people.Hokusai has
always been more admired in the West than he is in Japan. His
prints were among those imported to Paris in the mid-19th century
where they had a big impact on Impressionist artist including
Claude Monet and Edgar Degas. His most recognizable work is "The
Great Wave Off Kanagawa," also known as "In the Hollow of a Wave
Off the Coast of Kanagawa" but commonly known in the West as "The
Wave." The color woodcut is the first in the series "Thirty-six
Views of Mount Fuji" that Hokusai worked on between 1823 and 1827
during his Iitsu Period, with ten supplementary prints added over
the next.
What we have here is not one of those woodcuts, but a painting,
more commonly known as "Boy Viewing Mount Fuji," which makes more
sense since he is sitting on a tree and is not on the mountain
itself, is one of his most serene and atmospheric landscapes. The
young peasant boy sits in a tree, playing a flute as if to serenade
the mountain. The use of muted shades of green and gray add to the
painting's charm, but it is the striking use of angles: the way the
first part of the tree trunk parallels the left slope of the
mounting while Fuji's right slope is matched by the rolling
water. The black cloud behind the mountain is countered by the haze
that obscures it lower regions, adding another dimension to the
painting. The sheer simplicity of the design and the execution make
this a compelling work of art.
Hokusai's wood-block prints, silk screens, and landscape paintings
showed an evolution of free curved lines that defined his style
evolved into a series of spirals that achieved a even greater sense
of simplicity. The original painting of "Boy Viewing Mount Fuji"
was personally purchased by Freer Gallery of Art founder Charles
Lang Freer in 1898, and is currently part of a stunning Hokusai
exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution's Arthur M. Sackler Gallery
(March 4-May 14, 2006).The original hanging scroll of this ink and
color on silk painting measures 14 1/4 x 20 1/5 inches.That marks
the reproduction on this 10.5 x 14.5 inch fine art print about
two-thirds the size of the original.

(More customer reviews)I have a "plum
pudding" model of this brand. I did mine at Think Small by Rosebud,
3209 N Clark st, Chicago 773-477-1920. There's no online store and
it's not the easiest to find online, either. I reprint this info
for you b/c I've read the instructions for these, and am more than
grateful to have infinite help in the last Chicago dollhouse store
and workshop.
This is my second house, and it's 20 times better with working
dorbell, inside and outside lights, genuine cherry and mohogany
flooring, working neon bar signs. Eventually, I'll have a working
TV set. I spend a lot of time there, and these are the nicest
people who bend over backwards to help. It's a great social
opportunity to hang out with neighbors or your kids. I've met a lot
of nice people over there.
These are very tough and strong 3/8 plywood and MDF houses, and
while they cost more than say the lower-quality Greenleaf stuff,
you also get much better materials. Think Small only sells this
brand, as after 200 houses, you learn that thinner materials split
if you drill holes for wiring. Their prices are more than fair at
online prices, but without shipping. When I bought mine, I looked
for three days at various sites, and never did find better prices
for anything cheaper than Think Small offered.
I build my house there, and they help with tools and experienced
knowledge, make cuts for extra windows and doors for me (no
charge), and can easily match furniture, flooring and wallpaper
stuff to it, as the house is right downstairs. I can also use their
paint, primer, shellac, varnishes, cutters, knives, brushes, and
cleaners for no extra cost than the monthly rent of 45 bucks a
month. If you've been to the store, you know all this stuff is not
cheap and it quickly adds up. I have a bright pink and purple house
stored there, and will be glad to meet you when you come by.

(More customer reviews)This is a great
tool for even the least creative amoung us. The mural comes in four
panels, and its basically really large sheets of paper with the
mural printed on it and tracing paper. The rest is just paint by
number.
A couple of things could be improved. The colors are only for
Americana paints, which we found sort of hard to match all of them
in the craft store. It would be really helpful to give conversions
for other companies so you don't have to guess (you can search for
these online).
I also wish the numbers for the paint by numbers would come on
something other than the mural pieces. Like on a large sheet of
paper so you don't have to keep referencing the large mural
panels.
Other than that, its a great product!

the Jack Richeson Academy Weston Full French Easel. While it does
fit, it's a very tight squeeze to zip it all in properly at the top

cheap. That said, it will be serviceable, the pockets will be
handy. I primary bought it to take it through security at the

(More customer reviews)Since I like to
collect art supplies, I picked up this set shortly after it was
released. If waterbrushes were not becoming so readily available,
this set would be a convenient portable sketching kit.In reality,
it is rather bulky for sketching on-the-go.It does have a generous
amount of mixing palettes space and its 4-half-pan holding brackets
are practical for quickly customizing the color choices in the
set.The water bottle and holding caps are not so useful, but add
some small convenience for those that like to carry this kit in an
art bag around as a source of water for refilling waterbrushes and
holding small watercolor washes.I have removed the original Cotman
pans and replaced them with artist grade watercolors for increased
performance.I would avoid this set at MSRP, but it's worth a look

(More customer reviews)"In Times Square on
V.J. Day, I saw a sailor running along the street grabbing every
girl in sight. I was running ahead of him with my Leica looking
back over my shoulder. Then suddenly, in a flash, I saw something
white being grabbed. I turned around and clicked the moment the
sailor kissed the nurse....I took exactly four pictures. It was
done within a few seconds."
The photograph that "Life" printed that Alfred Eisenstaedt
(1898-1995) took in Times Square, New York City, on August 14, 1945
of "the kiss heard around the world" is one of the famous
photographs in American history.Considered the father of
photojournalism, Eisenstaedt first began creating photo essays in
Berlin during the 1920s and early 1930s. When he emigrated to the
United States in 1935 he joined the original photography staff at
"Life" magazine and a decade later he took the photograph that
appears on this 22 x 28 art poster that has come to symbolized the
joy of peace being declared ever since it first appeared in
"Life."
According to a follow up article "Life" did in 1980 the sailor in
the famous photograph was Bill Swicegood or George Mendonsa or
Clarence "Bud" Harding or Jack Russell or Marvin Kingsbury or James
Kearney or Walker Irving or Donald Bonsack or John Edmonson or
Arthur Leask orWallace C. Fowler (who confessed to his wife). Each
points to a different part of the sailor as proof (a hairline, a
mole, the positioning of the left hand, a newly acquired
Quartermaster 1st Class rating patch, or a bare patch). At that
point only three women claimed to be the girl being kissed, Edith
Shain, Greta Friedman, and Barbara Sokol. Apparently there was a
lot of kissing going on in Times Square on V-J Day, and the fact
that you cannot really see the faces of the sailor and the nurse
actually creates a universality to the kissing figures that makes
the photograph so compelling.
In 1989 "Time" did a special issue on "150 Years of Photo
Journalism" and named Eisenstaedt's photograph one of the ten
greatest images in the history of photojournalism. For the record,
the others were: The flag raising at Iwo Jima by Joe Rosenthal,
Alexander Gardner's posed photograph of a dead Confederate
sharpshooter at the Devil's Den at Gettysburg, the "Hindenburg"
disaster captured by Sam Shere, Dorothea Lange's haunting
photograph of a migrant mother, the death of a loyalist solider
captured by Robert Capa during the Spanish Civil War, Jack Ruby
shooting Lee Harvey Oswald taken by Robert Jackson, the execution
of a Viet Cong officer by a South Vietnamese police chief caught by
Eddie Adams, Neil Armstrong's shot of Buzz Aldrin on the surface of
the moon, and W. Eugene Smith's photograph of a mother bathing her
son whose body has been deformed by mercury poisoning in the
Japanese fishing village of Minimata.

V-J Day at Times Square, New York City, 1945, Art
Poster by Alfred Eisenstaedt
Product Description:
The most eagerly awaited event in the editorial cycle at TIME
Magazine is always the selection of the cover. The best covers
capture the zeitgeist of the week while surviving the judgment of
history. As browsing this collection of TIME cover art prints
shows, TIME is as good a record as any of who and what mattered
over the past 80-plus years. And so when TIME captures a person, an
event or a trend within its iconic red borders, the magazine is
adding that extra dose of significance that no other publication
can quite match. That is one reason why the original artwork for
more than 800 TIME covers now resides in the National Portrait
Gallery in Washington. Thanks to an amazing roster of artists,
photographers and graphic designers, from TIME's earliest charcoal
drawings of cover subjects to its later black-and-white photography
to the more recent paintings and stunning color photography, TIME
covers have always been, sometimes quite literally, works of great
art. And, while the times may change, the TIME cover, with its
iconic red border, has never lost its power to immediately send the
signal that this person or event or idea is important to our lives,
that in some way history is being made before our eyes.
