pay for.
The starter would not work after the first couple of starts.Found a
physical water/rust line in the starter but no water marks were on
the crate so this had to have happened in the Chineese starter
factory. No problem, an hour or two later I find the part on line
and the retailer paid for it.So, about two weeks later the
headlight works intermittently which was caused by a faulty voltage
regulator putting out too much voltage..Bad bulb of which is not
available in any automotive parts store.Still haven't found a
replacement bulb yet but did find a replacement regulator.
After only about 200 km the bike's kickstand spring mount breaks
and a new one had to be fabricated.
Next my daughter laid the bike over in in accident.Almost
impossible to find replacement body parts.
In my opinion, if you can pick-up at a give away price you come out
ok.I ride a 650 V-Strom with about 27K miles on her and have only
had one problem with water in the fuel, other than that a wonderful
ride and gets between 45 & 55 mpg when running from 65mph to
120 mph.The LF250 gets about 35mpg when running at interstate
speeds since it has to be ridden at full throttle which has a top
speed between 70 and 82mph.Don't buy the bike to save fuel on the
interstate, but it's ok for city commuting speeds.

(More customer reviews)There are lots of
generators out there, and deciding on which to purchase can be
complicated. I based my decision on getting one larger than I
thought I would need so that it would not spend its life stressed
to its limit. Although I had to purchase this generator elsewhere
(...) and I ended up paying more for it, I am glad I did finally
get it.
I suggest that you have some assistance on hand to get the VERY
heavy box into your garage to set it up. Assembly took me about an
hour or so, so you should be up and running in a short time. The
only problem I had were the holes in the frame for mounting the
rear legs were not tapped and the supplied bolts were not
self-tapping (or at least to say that they were not very good at
it- ther tips being quite large with no relief slot in them to cut
the metal), so I had to use a 1/4 x 20 tap to create the threads
before inserting the bolts. If you don't have a tap you could
easily replace the bolts with some better self-tapping bolts- they
are 1/4 x 20 x 1" I think.
The Vanguard motor is made in Japan and seems to be a very high
quality item. Once filled with oil and fueled up it started the
first time on the second or third pull adnran smoothly after about
a five minute warm up in cold weather (mid- 40's F.). Pulling on
the starter rope seemed quite easy and I suspect that this motor
has some sort ofcompression relief. For anyone of average strength,
I think that the starting battery would only be needed in very cold
weather.
Although I would not want it running next to my bedroom all night,
it does run quite a bit quieter than a lot of other generators I
have heard.
Be aware that most localities require a special set up if you want
to power an entire home with a generator. This special switch box
is not included and it needs to be wired by a qualified
electrician. If you just run some heavy extension cords to the
generator, then this is not necessary. This means that to power a
water well or other 220 equipment like central air conditioners the
box will be necessary.
To test it, once it had warmed up, I had the idle control on (low
idle speed engaged) and plugged in my portable circular saw. I hit
the trigger on the saw and the generator immediately came up in RPM
and the saw went to full power as if it were plugged into the
wall.
Be aware that when using voltage sensitive devices and light loads
like an incandescent light or two, the idle control has to be off
as the generator cannot sense these small loads and will not come
up to a power-prodicing RPM. My trouble light would not do anything
but glow dimly at the low idle speed.
This thing is large and has a huge alternator in it. With a 10,500
watt surge rating it should handle most all your needs- maybe not
all at once, but for most households this is going to be a real
handy tool to have around when the lights go out.
BTW- The motor and the alternator section each have a 2 year
warranty! At this price I found nothing to compare to the
BS750.

(More customer reviews)Within two weeks of
buying the product as backup power for my large saltwater system,
my power went out for six hours. The generator fired up on the
second pull and ran everything plus the home A/C with no issues. It
is a bit on the loud side, but I think that just makes the
neighbors jealous when they're sitting in the dark.I've also
ordered a manual transfer switch so I can power 10 house circuits
with the generator by simply flipping breakers.Very solid product,
well made, easy to move around using the supplied wheel kit and
pull bars.Engine start pull is not very difficult either as it
seems to have some sort of internal assist.

(More customer reviews)I was excited when
I found out that Generac got back into the portable generator
business. They sold their portable generator line to Briggs and
Stratton a few years ago but they are back to producing portable
generators again.I always liked the Generac portables. They were
quality products at reasonable prices.I've owned a Generac 4000EXL
for 12 years. It is a great little generator and the only one I knew
of at the time with an OHVI engine. My experience with the 4000EXL
is the reason I purchased the XP8000E.
I ordered my XP8000E over the Internet.Due to the bad ice storm in
the Northeast, none of the local dealers had them in stock.I paid
$50 less than Lowe's sells it for and that included free liftgate
delivery, which was nice since this unit weighs 200lb.In
retrospect, the ability to return it to Lowe's would have been
worth the extra $50.
The XP8000E was well packed. The packaging is ingenious and if you
follow the instructions, removal is really easy.On the down side,
following the instructions means you are cutting all four corners
of the box so if you have to return it, you have no box.The
generator is mounted on top of a heavy cardboard support. It
suspends the generator just enough so you can slip the wheels on
without having to lift it at all.Once the wheels are on, the
generator rolls easily out of the now flattened box.The only thing
I didn't like about the old red Generac generators is that the
wheels were under the motor end and the handles were on the
alternator end.The alternator is the heavier side of a generator so
you were lifting the heavy alternator end whenever you moved it
around.I was pleased to see that the new models are designed so
that the weight is over the wheels rather than the handles. This
makes moving the XP8000E almost as easy as the 4000EXL, even though
it weighs twice as much.
The next step was to fill the generator with oil.The XP8000E
Operator manual specified 3 different oil viscosities depending on
ambient temperature. There was no oil that could be used for all
temperature ranges. This is a nuisance because in New England,
temperatures can vary widely and I didn't want to have to change
the oil 4 times per year (for each season).Conversely, the engine
manual for this generator said 5W-30 full synthetic oil could be
used from -20

and front foot.Added gas and oil, and it started in one pull. This
unit puts out 29 amps at 120 volts.More than enough to power what I
need in an emergency. It is a little loud, but at $460 who can
complain?I switched to synthetic oil after break in to help
starting in cold weather as recomended in the manual.Thisis a very
nice, well made, simple to use generator.

(More customer reviews)The McCulloch 5700
has a well built frame and an included wheel kit (from Northern
Tool). The engine is a near identical Chinese copy of the Honda 340
GX 11-hp engine and runs smoothly and fairly quiet. It is not as
quiet as a true Honda but more so than a Briggs. Fuel economy seems
to be good too. It starts with one or two pulls though I usually
run it several times a month. Workmanship seems to be good.
Instructions are understandable but suffer from poor grammer. It
carries only a one year warranty where most others have two. I'm
not too worried about the engine as I am told that Honda parts are
interchangeable. The generator part I'm not too sure about but so
far after about 30 hours of operation with fairly heavy loads,
there has been no problem. The price was right but I won't know if
I had made the right decision until some years down the road. I
still haven't checked the AC frequency or voltage under load but
will do so the next I use it. I do wish it had automatic voltage
regulation but that is only found on more expensive units. Anyway,
at this point I feel I got a good deal and the unit has exceeded my
expectations.

(More customer reviews)I bought this
because I have WAY too many gadgets on my car, a 97 VW Passat TDI
that runs on diesel, used cooking oil, HHO (aka hydroxy or Brown's
gas, basically H2O split into hydrogen and oxygen) and
water-methanol with CO2 intake charge cooling. I needed to add many
switches to control all the additional components and accessories,
but quickly ran out of space on the dashboard. Enter PM-172 to the
rescue. I can control (off-on) the CO2 cooling, water spray onto
the intercooler, driving lights, just about any electrically
operated device. Instructions are simple and installation is easy,
just insert the small 23A-12V battery and replace the stock
shifter. Locate the control box under the dash and connect wiring
to power, ground and components as needed. So far the unit works
quite well. My only complaint is that the buttons do not light
(when on), but that would probably discharge the little battery too
quickly. Mine also arrived with a small scratch on the knob, a
minor cosmetic flaw but disappointing nonetheless.
I am leaving one button available to rig for an ejection seat
;-)

(More customer reviews)I purchased this on
Dec 14, 2008.
I received it on Dec 19.
Shipping was good.
I assembled the unit on Dec 20.
Assembly went fine and is straight forward for anyone with a mild
mechanical sense.
The Unit is suppose to have a dip stick to check the oil, but it is
missing.
Also, when I put fuel in the unit and turn on the gas valve, the
valve leaks - not alot but enough to be a fire hazzard - leaks onto
the engine housing.
I called the number in the instructions for assemble and I was sent
to voice mail and was asked to leave my number and a tech would
call me.
So I left a message with a brief discription of my problem and my
phone number.I am yet to hear from any one.
Also - A genral complain about Amazon.com !
I had placed the order for the generator, and a short time after I
was informed of the possibility of missing parts and not being able
to get customer service from Generac. I called Amazon.com to cancel
the order, and even though it was only about 40 minutes since I
place the order, then claim they could not cancel it.
AND - the price has been lowered by over $50 since I purchased it a
week ago!

A Durable Power Supply Wherever You Need It
The Generac 8,000-Watt Generator with Electric Start is an ideal
portable generator to have at home, on the job site, or wherever
you need power. Its compact frame--33.5 x 26.5 x 27.5 inches
(LxWxH)--is fitted with never-flat wheels and locking fold-down
handles, so it can easily accompany you wherever you go. And with
its hardened steel-tube cradle, this rugged generator holds up well
for frequent travel, allowing you to look forward to years of
operation. Plus, this model features an electric ignition for fast,
easy start-up.
Thanks to its versatile design, this generator adds comfort and
possibility to any situation. Use it to keep your family safe and
well-equipped through unexpected blackouts, add some fun and luxury
to a camping trip, or make construction jobs faster and easier.
A Low-Maintenance, High-Performance OHVI Engine
Designed specifically for generators, the Generac 8,000-Watt
Generator with Electric Start's heavy-duty 410-cc OHVI (overhead
valve industrial) engine boasts a host of features. An exclusive
X-Torq governor maximizes the engine's performance to keep it
running without stalls. And so engine components continue moving
smoothly, a pressurized lubrication system sends oil directly to
critical areas.
Thanks to this full-pressure lubrication system, the engine can
employ an automotive-grade, spin-on oil filter that sifts out dirt
and other unwanted substances. The oil filter works alongside a
dual-element air filter. Together, the two keep engine performance
at a maximum and maintenance at a minimum.
Plus, this generator's sturdy, eight-gallon steel tank ensures a
full 11 hours of operation at a 50-percent load, letting you relax
for hours of use. And with the tank's built-in fuel gauge, you can
monitor fuel levels at a glance. Generac even provides you with
your first supply of oil.
Plenty of Wattage to Run a Full Range of Appliances
The Generac 8,000-Watt Generator with Electric Start supplies 8,000
output watts and 10,000 maximum watts (for start-up of devices). It
has an A/C voltage of 120/240 and a frequency of 60 hertz.
For unexpected blackouts, this is enough wattage to run home
appliances such as security systems, computers, and electric
stoves, as well as window A/C units and sump pumps. For
construction and landscaping applications, it's enough to support
large devices such as lawn mowers, belt sanders, and table saws.
And for camping and outdoor events, it can run portable stereos,
outdoor lights, and electric grills.
(Note: All appliances should be checked for actual wattage
ratings.)
Safe, Quiet Operation with Overload-Protected Outlets
If security and quiet operation are important to you in a
generator, then the Generac 8,000-Watt Generator with Electric
Start is an ideal choice. Its four 120-volt outlets and single
120/240-volt 30 Amp twist lock outlet are circuit-breaker
protected, guarding against power overloads and allowing the
generator to smoothly send power to your appliances. And the
low-tone muffler means the generator runs at a comfortable noise
level that easily blends into the background.
This generator is backed by a two-year limited warranty.

(More customer reviews)We recently
traveled from Michigan to New Jersey and then down to SW Virginia
with a few stops included to see relatives. My wife decided to
purchase the Nextar Q4 which she found on sale at a local
department store the day before we left.As we were busy preparing
for the trip, I did not have time to set up the unit, but I did get
it charged so that I could work with it later, when we were in
Pennsylvania with relatives.
Setup took 10-15 minutes, but I am the type who tends to read the
manuals first before pressing all the buttons. Setting the date and
time was a little tricky and it is not immediately intuitive how
the selection process works, but with trial and error I got it
right.Programming in destination addresses worked okay, however,
the touch screen seemed slightly off for point of contact, but
after getting used to it, I had no problem getting it to respond.
There is a 'point of contact' adjustment utilty that can be
adjusted and I may not have done that correctly the first time. The
address selection function remembers previous selections and
narrows down the search process quickly to a city, street or
address number in just a few steps.Getting through the streets in
an unfamilar city was really much better with the street
announcements prior to, closer to and at the point of the turn. I
found the voice announcements understandable. If you miss a turn,
the unit will tell you to turnaround as soon as possible, however
it you continue, the system will recalabrate the route using a
different path. When I learned multiple paths to a destination, I
just turned it off, since it can become annoying with the
turnaround requests.Another issue for me was the screen
backlighting. My close eyesight is not the best, and I use readers
(or sunglasses with bifocals) to see close up text. When the unit
was mounted on the dash in high light conditions, I had trouble
reading the screen.I could not get a backlight setting that
improved it enough in that position for me.I have not seen other
units so it is hard to make comparisons, but having some
better/improved lighting settings/options would be desirable for
me.
I may review some of the other GPS offerings with this in mind.
All in all, it worked very well, but then we are not experienced
users of GPS systems or who know the options available. We do not
need cell phone or MP3 or picture viewing features, so that makes
our requirements a lot less. One feature that I think is useful is
the traffic information which this unit cannot provide. There were
several instances where knowing about congestion or road
construction would have been useful in selecting a route. If I were
going on another long cross country trip, I might opt to upgrade to
a system with this feature.Otherwise, this is a very good unit for
the uninitiated and the first time user, and it saved some
significant time finding some points of interest, restaurants, and
hotels along the way. If you are used to reading a map to determine
routes, trusting one of these systems to guide you safely through
unfamiliar territory takes a little getting used to, but I am
definitely hooked and will have some type of GPS system when we
travel in the future.I complemented my wife for making a good
purchase. She has better intuition that I do anyway!

(More customer reviews)After weathering
three hurricanes last year here in central Florida, we decided to
take the plunge and invest in a generator. We were looking for one
with enough power to run our refrigerator, ceiling fans, lights,
television, microwave, computer, and miscellaneous small appliances
(coffeemaker, fans, etc).We also wanted the machine to be portable
so it could be stored in our garage when not in use and moved
outside by one person when it needed to be run.It should be
gasoline powered, relatively fuel efficient, and
affordable. Finally, we wanted to be able to hook the generator into
our house circuitry so as not to have to deal with extension
cords.Connecting to the house circuitry meant installing a transfer
switch for safety and to meet National Electric Code requirements.A
transfer switch allows you to power essential, pre-selected branch
circuits (refrigerator, living room, dining room, for instance)
from either utility power OR generator power, but never both
simultaneously. The transfer switch does the very important job of
electrically isolating generator-powered branch circuits from
utility service.Without it, you would be energizing service lines
outside your house, creating an extremely dangerous condition; for
instance, you could electrocute utility crews working to restore
power. The transfer switch configuration also requires the generator
to supply 120/240VAC power, which is what is used to power the
transfer switch/subpanel.
For the list of items we wanted to power, 5000W is the correct
size.A larger generator would be needed if we wanted to run our
central air conditioning system, the hot water heater, and/or the
electric range.
We visited the usual home-improvement-superstore suspects to look
at 5000 Watt generators.TroyBilt and Generac are well under $1000
and certainly affordable, but they are made by Briggs & Straton
and are of poor quality, in my opinion.I bought a brand new
TroyBilt/B&S power-washer some years back and after about 6
months the seams in the plastic gas tank came apart, causing it to
leak gasoline when filled more than part way.I bought a new Toro
lawn mower with a B&S engine which suffered the exact same fate
- the seams in the plastic gas tank failed.Perhaps I am just
unlucky with B&S products. But for me, I am not interested in
owning another one.
Honda generators were very nice and have a well-deserved reputation
for reliability. However, they were just not affordable - at least
to us.If I were a site contractor and was going to use it every
day, then maybe I could justify the $3000+ cost, but certainly not
for a machine that was going to spend most of its days sitting in
the garage.
We settled on a Makita G6100R generator and I have been very happy
with it.The 6100R is identical to the Robin Subaru RGV6100 --
evidently rebranded under the Makita name.It is powered by an 11HP
OHV, 4-cycle, air-cooled Robin Subaru engine which, according to
the literature, has an aluminum alloy block with cast iron cylinder
liner, electronic ignition with automatic timing adjustment, dual
ball bearing supported crankshaft, automatic decompression system,
and splash type lubrication. The generator is brushless,
self-exciting, 2-pole, single phase and generates 20 Amps on each
of the two 120V output circuits for a total of 40Amps (20Amps at
240VAC). The 5-gallon metal gas tank will, reportedly, allow it to
run under full load for about 7 hours. This generator is also
available with an electric start (model G6101R).The one I bought
(G6100R) has a recoil-type starter (pull cord).I had no problems
starting it, whatsoever. It starts very easily.I also purchased the
Makita 110004-A 2-wheel mobility kit, which I highly
recommend.Without it, you are looking at close to 200 lbs of dead
weight to move around.
I purchased a Gen/Tran PowerStay 200660 manual transfer switch,
which allows me to switch up to 16 branch circuits between utility
power and generator power. When in operation, the generator sits
OUTDOORS and away from HVAC intakes (avoiding the dangers of carbon
monoxide poisoning) and plugs into a Reliance PR20 power inlet box
using a 10-foot L14-20 power cord (20A @ 120/240VAC).A 50-foot
length of 10AWG 4-wire Romex runs from the power inlet box, through
the attic, and connects to the transfer switch next to the main
power center (breaker box).Basically, you start the generator, then
switch the transfer switch to open the Utility breaker and close
the generater breaker, thus supplying generated power to all the
branch circuits wired into the transfer switch subpanel.A nice side
feature of this setup is that when the utility power comes back on,
power will be restored to those branch circuits not routed through
the transfer switch (such as air conditioning). Therefore, you will
know right away when the utility power comes back on.

(More customer reviews)Bought this
generator in case of a power outage to run my furnace along with a
few lights and possibly a TV.The unit appears fairly well-made,
runs pretty smooth and quiet and starts reliably so far after only
a few hours on the run-time meter.Unfortunately I didn't realize I
had to de-rate the power output of the unit for my elevation (6300'
above sea-level).I was pretty shocked to find out that engines
generally take about a 3 to 3.5% hit on power output for every
1000' above sea level.I didn't think it was that severe until I got
looking at it and never really thought about it much until I bought
this unit.Anyway, after doing some load testing here are my
results:
Loads were a small air compressor, a shop vac, and flourescent and
incandescent lighting.
Ambient temp = 33 deg F. @ 6300' elev.
Volts/Watts/Hz/PF
124.4/0/62.2/0(no attached loads)
113/170/61.7/0.84 (small lights here)
116/770/60.2/0.93 (shop vac on here)
112.5/1100/59.9/0.88 (more lights here)
114/1460/59.6/0.94 (more lights again)
108.7/2100/59.5/0.92 (air compressor on here)
102.6/2600/57.9/0.92 (more lights)
101/2600/57.1/0.93 (added some more small lights - basically turned
the rest of what I had on.)
On the second from last set of data, I believe the machine was
already at full throttle, but I didn't actually check this until
the last set.So, in my particular case, it looks like this
generator maxes out at about 2600 watts at my elevation which is
probably a little less than anticipated, but reasonably close.I
would rate it at 2000W continus w/ 2500W surge rating based on what
I saw where it's being used.I feel the governor controls pretty
well from the data above within the practical load range
considering the price of the unit. The voltage regulator probably
could be a little more stable at trying to maintain 120 V under the
various loads.I haven't tried to run the electronics/blowers on my
furnace yet, but I think it should be able to do it in an emergency
although I'll have to practice some load management between other
things using the electricity (like shutting off everything else
before starting the furnace).I originally intended to be able to
run with a little more "elbow room" and not worry about load
management as much but it looks like I'll need to have a generator
rated at least in the 5 to 6000 watt range to do what I want.If I
was at sea-level I probably wouldn't even be considering a larger
unit given the same electrical loads.I would recommed this unit to
someone considering it, assuming you have a good handle on the
conditions you'll be using it in.Unfortunately it isn't as
straightforward as one would like it to be.

(More customer reviews)Quite Diesel Unit,
smooth operation. I use this as a back up for our home when the
rural power fails. Runs my 220 pump and provides lights and power
for small appliances. We have an all electric home. Of course it
won't handle a 20kw furnace or Central A/C, but runs a whole house
fans and small fans for the wood stove. Electric start and fuel
economy make this unit great for the price.
*******
One year after owning this generator it only had 10 hours service
and we needed it to keep us going after a major storm took out our
power. 10 hours into service, the rocker arm bolts broke and the
engine shut down. The engine is made in China and the company has
been contacted many many times for repair parts. I was willing to
pay for the parts but they have not provided any opportunity to get
them. I have been trying for 4 months and have not been contacted
to order the needed parts. The quality of workmanship is terrible!
The customer service is non-existant.
*******
I am now the proud owner of a $1200.00, 300 lb. Door stop..

I even tried to contact the engine manufacturer in China, but they
have little or no presence in the US. Guess I'm just out of
ruck!

(More customer reviews)Since not much can
be found online about this product I hope to shed some light on
this tester.
The OTC 3184 is a conductance battery tester and not a load
tester. This technology now seems to be the preferred method of
testing the condition of automotive batteries.
Testing a battery on the bench is done by simply selecting the
battery rating with the tester and then allowing the tester to run
its cycle. The tester will display the batteries voltage, if it is
good or bad, and capacity in CCA, a very nice feature.
Charging and starting tests are very simple. The starting test
records the lowest voltage from the battery while cranking the
engine. The charging tests measure alternator output while at idle,
2000 rpm and 1000 rpm with varying loads turned on or off
(headlights, heater, etc). There is also a test for alternator
ripple voltage, this is the test that can really save you a lot of
headache.
Test results are very repeatable and seem in line with load testing
results.
I think the menu system could be a little better, but that's my
only complaint.
Overall, a very nice tester to have in your toolbox.
