3The Cam does the job
By A
This is not a high quality product, but you get what you pay for, and we wanted to get a cheaper model to try out. It takes pretty good color videos, about that of a 3-4 mega pixel camera. The operation is very simple, and it does pick up sound pretty well. If you move your head too fast it gets blurry. It is plastic and it isn’t water proof, but if you want a cheap starter head cam, that you won’t cry if it gets destroyed…. Here it is.

3Get what you pay for
By Cornerstone Paranormal
The camera states it has an IR light, but that isn’t accurate. It has a red laser light for focus of the lens. The camera does see in darkness if you have an external IR light source (which thankfully we do). The instructions that come with the camera are 100% useless, you will simply have to play with it to figure it out (it comes direct from China and there are no worthy documents with the camera). Now with that said, our dog has been wearing the camera and it doesn’t do bad for $40some bucks, compared to paying over $100. The batteries don’t last too long, but in the end, you get what you pay for and as long as you know what you’re looking for and what to expect, this camera isn’t too bad. If you’re not the type that can easily figure out electronics, this isn’t the camera for you.

Canon Xl1 Digital Camcorder Kit

Canon Xl1 Digital Camcorder Kit at Amazon

Canon Xl1 Digital Camcorder Kit

This mini DV offers great effigy quality and full digital power. The XL1′s design and manual controls offer the widest range of picture possibilities. In daylight or lowlight, if your subject is near or far, this cutting edge camera adjusts it is settings to offer the finest in resolution, exposure and color reproduction. Additional features include top grip with recording controls, standard optical 16x zoom lens with SuperRange optical effigy stabilizer and 3 shooting modes.

The Canon XL1 is helping to blur the line amongst buyer and professional video equipment. Though it’s little sufficient to carry around and doesn’t cost much more than a top-of-the-line buyer camcorder, the XL1 develops such high-quality results that a heap of independent filmmakers have started using it rather of a established film camera.

Great movies begin with great CCD sensors, and Canon cuts no corners here. For the best possible picture quality, they use three distinguished 270,000 pixel CCDs (one for each primary color). To further improve effigy detail, Canon has deliberately shifted the green CCD half a pixel horizontally and vertically. This shift allows more precise interpolation, resulting in an effigy that Canon claims rivals those from cameras with 410,000 pixel CCDs. Each pixel is 72 square microns, which is regarding 1.5 times the size as those in competing camcorders. This increased size increments light sensitivity, permitting you to shoot in lower-light situations. Ultimately, the larger pixel size results in an betterment of 4 dB in sensitivity.

The XL1′s body is based on a magnesium-alloy frame for greatest or most complete or best possible durability. It ships with a 16x optical zoom lens with optical effigy stabilization, but is also compatible with other XL camcorder lenses. With an optional adapter, you may use Canon EF (EOS) still camera lenses–some of which likewise feature optical effigy stabilization.

Though the camera’s built-in microphone has a great frequency response, the XL1 may likewise receive balanced microphones with the optional MA-100 microphone adapter/shoulder pad. The XL1 records digital audio, with two channels of 16 bit/48 KHz sound or 4 channels of 12 bit/32 KHz sound.

The electronics of the XL1 have some progressed features, including a number of programmed AE modes, as well as both shutter and aperture priority modes. There are two dissimilar automati modes, one of which allows you to adjust any setting manually, if you want, and the other, which adjusts each setting mechanically and lets you adjust nothing. A spotlight mode mechanically compensates for troubles when shooting a subject bathed in a spotlight. There are likewise three dissimilar shooting modes: Normal Movie, Digital Photo, and Frame Movie. Normal Movie mode is for any time you want to shoot video footage. Digital photo mode records a still effigy for six seconds on the mini DV tape and also captures any audio, such as a commentary. The Frame Movie Mode records 30 noninterlaced still images per second, rather of capturing 60 fps interlaced images. This mode isn’t intended to be applied for shooting video (playback may not look completely smooth). Rather, Frame Movie mode ought to be used as a burst, or continuous, shooting mode, like you’d find on a still camera.

The XL1 uses an IEEE 1394 port for digital editing and for transferring footage to and from other IEEE 1394 compliant devices. The camcorder likewise has RCA (composite) audio and video ports, and an S-Video out. The XL1 features a LANC terminal for editing with compatible controllers.

5Canon has the best optics, color, and overall look…
By A
I have used this camera at a few weddings, along with a Canon GL1, and I personally own a Canon Optura. I have also used a Sony TRV1000, and TRV20.

First off, let me mention that progressive scan is absolutely incredible. I can no longer stand the home-userish look of interlaced video. What progressive scan (or “frame mode”) does is it takes 30 full frames per second. Interlaced records 60 FIELDS per second, creating a supposed 30 fps (giving it that unrealistic, slimy-smooth motion like a home Hi8 camera). What FULL frames do is make it have a somewhat “jerkier” effect which gives the footage a much more film like look. It’s beautiful, you’ve got to see the difference side by side, sometime (or just switch between interlaced and frame on the XL1, or some other Canon).

The Color: There are many sites with side by side comparisons of the XL1 and the VX1000 (perhaps the VX2000, too). The thing is, there is no comparison. Sony’s lenses lean toward the blues, giving it a very cold, unnatural feeling (not to mention interlaced un-naturalness!). The blueness is so apparent, that at times you must add color corrections, wasting time in post. Canon leans towards the reds, giving it a much warmer, more realistic coloring, and shading. But, what do you expect? Canon has been in the business of lens making for a long time. Who ever heard of Sony making a 35MM cinematic lens? Yes, some Sony cameras have Carl Ziess lenses, but they still have the blue tint to it. In fact, those are the lenses I was speaking of earlier as being cold, and blue.

Optical Stabilization: The stabilization is incredible to see when zoomed all the way! There is virtually no visible shake, whatsoever. Of course, this does not replace the rock solidness of a tripod shot… but for handheld work outdoors, it is indispensable. Some people have mentioned that when shooting a tripod shot across a canyon or some such thing, that it tends to “stick.” All you have to do when shooting tripod shots is simply turn off the image stabilization.

All that, and the ability to control the shutter speed, the aperture, the exposure, the focus, the ability to change lenses… even to 35MM Canon EOS lenses (with an adapter)! All these things and much, much more make this the camera to own. I would take it over a $15,000 interlaced beta cam any day (unless I could sell that camera, and buy a few XL1s!;).

This camera is highly recommended be me. Canon even made a commercial with it … for their ZR10! Buy today, you won’t regret it (and no, I don’t work for Canon:). If you’re just considering buying a MiniDV camera, but can’t afford this one, still, go Canon. Most of them have a lot of the of the same features (GL1, and Optura), or slightly dumbed down HIGH quality home cameras that still have progressive scan (Optura Pi, Elura, Elura 2).

5Quality at it’s best
By James Costa
The Canon XL1 is a great piece of equipment. My company uses this very same camera to do most of our commercials. Since its got such great graphic quality (~360,000 pixels per frame) and can capture at high speeds, its the clear choice for our high-speed shooting. The sound quality and zoom on the mic is also incredible. If youre still not sure on buying it, I suggest you find a local video or camera store and rent and play with one for a day, its a tremendously worthy investment…

4I returned mine
By Five Jay Dad
For high-end amateur applications, I returned my XL1 in favor of the Sony DCR-VX2000. The XL1 image quality is superb; however, the image quality of many less expensive cameras these days is so impressive that after shooting a lot of test video at various lux, close-up and zoom scenarios I was hard pressed to see *any* difference between the XL1 and my Panasonic DV600 and Sony PC-5.

Online reviews typically give XL1 and Sony VX2000 image quality equal ratings.

Although my XL1 was manufactured in August 2000, the model itself appears to be a couple of years old and lacks some of the Sony’s electronic features and an LCD viewfinder.

I was also disappointed in the XL1 still photo quality. Most Sony models perform much better in this area.

The XL1 zoom motor is so loud as to interfere with sound recording, and the manual zoom apparently invokes a proxy mechanism rather than controlling the zoom directly, resulting in a latency which is perceived as lack of responsiveness.

Several online DV sites mention rumors of a Canon XL2. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that the XL1 is near the end of its product cycle.

5A great product for little price!
By John D. Feyrer
Ok….all the negative reviews, I am unsure as to where your review is coming from as I have proven these work on multiple units with multiple different Defender Turbo’s.

I run a Playstation 3 Repair cervice and honestly recommened these to every customer I have. While I am unallowed to present actual numbers, I can safely say that this fan DOES remove a large majority of the heat build-up inside the playstation 3 console.

This unit works exactly as it is described and indeed does suck out large amount of heats causing a noticeable difference in temperature.

If you want to add life to the span of your PS3, buy one of these!

5Get this if you have an older (FAT) unit. NOT for slim.
By V. Louie
I have had this device for a week now, and it works fine. Yes, it’s noisy, but all fans are noisy, and when you’re playing games, who notices? My PS3 recently Yellowed Light-of-Death’d on me, and I had it repaired. I bought this mainly because my PS3 over-heated, and the GPU became loose from the motherboard due to heat (At least that’s what the repair tech said). Got the other cooling fan unit that fits in the front, but I think this one works better. So now I’m back to my long gaming sessions w/ Killzone 3…

4Very good Fan for 60 & 40 GB PS3 for $$$
By Timothy M. Heinrich
I have had 1 of these for about 3 or 4 years and it has lasted even though I just found it clogged with dust, which proves that it works to keep air moving through the PS3.
-
As the Story goes; I have switched this Fan back and forth between my 2 PS3′s and recently left it on my 60GB model which was moved to my main TV, under my Sony LCD with an open air stand. This left my 40GB model in a TV console with a cubby for a VCR or gaming System. Unfortunately, No Heat can dissipate from that small space without a Fan. Ultimately the 40 GB gave up the ghost (we thought), until my Son came across a guy on YouTube.com showing step by step, how to repair a dead PS3 with nothing more then a 500 Deg F Heat Gun & some Thermal compound. Well, we followed the Directions tonight & wouldn’t you know that it actually works like a charm (I thought it was a scam Video). While fixing it in under 2 hours, we found heavy amounts of dust inside the PS3 and all over the circuitry, Fan & other Parts. The Fan I am reviewing about was on my 60GB PS3 & I told my Son to get it so we could use it on the 40GB PS3 now that it is repaired and found that it had worked so good that it was clogged completely inside (just proves it was moving air out of the PS3). Now this fan is going on my revived 40Gb PS3 and I will purchase another for my 60GB PS3.
-
I have learned to keep the Electronic equipment clean & the Heat down. Also, I found that the PS3 is far superior to the XBOX, in that this can be repaired at home and comes with the Blue-Ray Player that I Love. I know too many friends with XBOX’s that have experienced the Red ring of Death and they don’t even get a decent DVD Player.

2Canon VIXIA HF R10/R11 – not competitive
By GKCMilner
Well I haven’t had the camera very long, but it’s already packed up and ready to go back.

I have been shopping for a replacement for my JVC GR-D72U for a while now and had narrowed my list down to three. This one wasn’t even on the short list. So why did I buy it? Well Costco had it on sale for $355 including a Canon case, a 4GB SD card and an HDMI cable. They were no longer stocking them and it was the last one. It was a new, sealed unit. Considering the MSRP on this camcorder is $699, I figured it might be worth a shot at this price.

When I unpacked it I was very impressed with the camcorder itself. It was very attractive and had a very nice high-quality feel to it. I knew from what I had read about it before that it didn’t have a lot of fancy features so I figured that Canon must have made up for it in quality. It sure felt like it. Unfortunately that is where the quality ended.

I went to install the battery I was surprised to see that it actually went inside the camera. So much for an extended battery. To charge it you remove one of the plastic doors on the back of the camera and plug in the power cord. There are two of these doors on the back and they stay attached by rubber tethers and seem fairly secure.

I knew the camera didn’t come with a remote but I figured I could get one for it, or use a universal remote; wrong, It doesn’t have an IR receiver. And it is not CEC compliant so you can’t control it with one of your other CEC devices when it’s connected. I was pretty disappointed since this is pretty common in less expensive camcorders.

I went online to see if there were any firmware updates and there was. It allows the camera to recognize SDXC cards now. I checked the firmware on my camera and it was already updated.

After the camera was fully charged I started shooting video. I started in the house with camera on IA (Intelligent Auto). Everything looked sort of dark and grainy, but I figured it might just be the display. I played around with some different settings, which were really easy to find. The menu system in this camera is really easy to navigate and the little flat joystick-like knob made it very easy to move between menus.

After shooting some indoor shots I went outdoors for some shots of the yard and pool. This is where I could test out the zoom and the image stabilizer (IS). This is when I started getting really disappointed. The IS worked ok when the lens was not zoomed, but when fully zoomed it was like it wasn’t even on. The IS in my old JVC was far superior. So I went into the menu again to see if there were any settings I could tweak, and that’s when I noticed the default is normal IS, not Dynamic IS. So I turned on Dynamic with high expectations. I was sorely let down; Dynamic IS seemed to make no difference. So I played around with some other settings including turning digital zoom and off, but nothing helped. Truly terrible IS.

Well after shooting all my test footage it was time to watch it on the TV. I plugged everything in and it came up on the TV nicely. It was extremely annoying that I had to squat next to the TV with the camera since it had no remote. Well the indoor footage looked terrible; even worse than what I saw on the camera display. It was extremely grainy and the colors were terrible. Unacceptable. So I figured I would shoot some more footage trying some manual settings and priority AS. Same results. This camera cannot take good indoor/low light shots. Maybe if it had an assist light it could, but it doesn’t have an accessory shoe to attach one to. Another problem was there was like a motor sound I could hear in the recordings, almost like it had a tape in it. It is tapeless and it doesn’t have optical stabilization, so I can only assume it’s the auto focus motor constantly working.

So then I viewed the outdoor footage. It was better, but the colors seemed a little washed out. In Auto mode it would change the setting based on the scene. As an example; I got really close to a bush and it would automatically select Macro. A nice feature, but it was so slow to react that is was always a scene behind, or wouldn’t change at all. Another problem with this camera is the audio. It sounded pretty bad. The audio sounded to me like it was highly compressed. I recorded the water spilling over the spa wall and it did not accurately reproduce the sound. There were also times when my dog barked while I was recording, and while playing it back it sounded like someone else’s dog. Now the nice thing is that it has a mic-in jack, but again, there is no accessory shoe to mount a microphone on. This is another area where my old JVC was far superior.

All in all this is just not a well done product by Canon. It is way overpriced for the features, and especially considering the audio and video quality. Canon needs to just pull this product before it hurts their reputation.

I am going to try the Panasonic HDC-SD60 next. I know someone that has one and has been very pleased with using it with his Mac. I’ll post a review on it too.

I didn’t comment on the software and included editing applications because there are so many alternatives available if you’re not happy with what’s included. The most important part is the hardware.

Pros:
o Now supports SDXC cards
o Very easy to use menu system
o No touch screen (I prefer tactile feedback)
o OK outdoor picture quality
o Good zoom
o Built in lens cover
o Size/style/build quality
o 32GB onboard

Cons:
o Poor Indoor/low light picture quality
o Poor audio quality
o No remote control (not even an IR sensor)
o No assist light
o Only accepts one size battery
o Motor sound on recording
o Lens needs to be wider angle (35mm)
o No lens barrel threads for filters
o No accessory shoe
o Digital zoom can’t be used in AUTO mode (manual settings don’t stick when you switch to Auto)
o Image stabilization is terrible
o Plastic tripod mount threads
o Low resolution display screen
o Battery life is terrible
o The only printed instructions is the Quick Start Guide

UPDATE:
We recently had a lot of snow so I thought it would be nice to drive around and tape it. I have to say that the resulting videos looked pretty good. The colors looked bright without being over saturated. Unfortunatly the image stabilization was a let down as there was quite a bit of shake from us driving over the compacted snow and ice. After we recorder we played it back on the TV, and before we could see the whole video the battery died. It’s really too bad you can’t get an extended battery for this camera. The good news is that batteries are relatively cheap, so you can keep some spares in the bag.

UPDATE:
I was a little concerned that my expectations might have been a little too high. Well, I have received my Panasonic HDC-SD60 and it has met (exceeded) my expectations. It is at least a generation ahead of the Canon, and is far superior in almost every way performance-wise (the Canon looks better, has a better menu and button placement). I will post a full review of the Panasonic later, but I just wanted to mention here that my expectations of the Canon were not too high.

5Great Camera for the Price!
By Robert Anderson
I just bought this camera from Costco for around $460. I’m a professional filmmaker [...] and I’ve used all kinds of equipment. I’d love to take the time to write up a detailed review, but I’m on a tight production deadline as I type. And after seeing only one person give this camera a review– a 1-star review, primarily frustrated, it seems, with the editing software that comes with the camera–I just had to say: “Wait! This is a super camera for the price! Consider it, folks!”

The best I can give you is a link to a ZDNet review. They gave it a 7.9 rating out of 10. That’s pretty doggone good. Check it out at: [...]

Have fun!
Bob

2Will wait for better technology
By TranceMist
I bought this kit at my local Costco for $379.

I currently use a very good Panasonic 3CCD miniDV SD video camera and an iPhone4 for 720p video. This would have to be better than both.

I only use iMovie (’10) on a Mac and didn’t even bother with the bundled software.

Therefore, the following are my observations upon using this camera:

* poor low-light performance, lots of noise
* poor optical image stabilization
* poor image quality for motion, lots of jagged edges
* default bit rate set quite medium (change to high)
* default video quality set to medium (change to high)
* default video size set to 1600×1200, (change to 1280×1080)
* default frame rate set to 60i, not 24p or 30p
* setting camera to frame rate modes 24p or 30p disables photo feature
* default JPG compression level set to medium (change to low)
* iMovie must convert AVCHD to QuickTime, a very slow process, even on a quad-core Mac
* AVCHD .MTS files are 1/5 the size of QuickTime .MOV
* The larger .MOV files are a challenge to play off of external drives to their much higher bit rate
* VLC can be used to play .MTS files directly
* rated battery life is only 45m
* keeping footage presents dilemma, keep AVCHD files, QuickTime, or both? lots of storage space required, no tape backup
* video quality of iPhone4, even though only 720p, is better.

In summary, this camera provides worse video quality than my iPhone4. The optical image stabilization, the one thing that could be a significant benefit, is so weak as to barely be useful.

I’ve returned the camera and will wait another year or two for better technology at this price point.
