5 Ingredients or Less! Fresh Recipes for Every Season Plus Clever Tips for Celebrating Every Day (Gooseberry Patch) Review

5IngredientsorLessFreshRecipesforEverySeasonPlusCleverTipsforCelebratingEveryDay
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Thus far, everything in this cookbook is GOOD and HANDY (I have only had it a week or so, and have already used it three times, to the neglect of my other Gooseberry Patch cookbooks!) It's lots of fun just to read the recipes, which are both mouth-watering and almost TOO easy. Clear, simple instructions will please even the most novice cooks. I also loved how this book was organized by season: lighter, fresher dishes in the summer section; cozier, comfort-food dishes in the fall and winter.

The recipes are also extremely inexpensive to make, and in many cases, by using the staples you probably already have. In other words, this book is a no-lose situation! I'd choose it as a gift for any newlywed, college student, or family-on-the-go.

There are even really cute ideas for dressing up and changing flea-market finds, and other simple crafts and decorating ideas that even a fumble-fingers such as myself can handily accomplish.

Only one very minor complaint...it seemed that some seasonings were left out of a few the recipes, simply to keep them under 5 ingredients. But the basics here are so good I wouldn't have minded if they called for 10 ingredients.

UPDATE: Today I made the recipe for BIG Chocolate Cookies on Page 57. Something went wrong, or there was poor editing in temperature or ingredients, or SOMETHING. I ended up with a huge, gloppy, inedible mess. I've been baking since age 9 and have never had such a failure as this particular recipe. Gah!!

Baking With Stevia: Recipes for the Sweet Leaf Review

BakingWithStevia:RecipesfortheSweetLeaf
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a diabetic looking for sugarless recipes, I found "Baking with Stevia" a grand disappointment. While the recipes do contain Stevia, most also contain maple syrup and/or honey. While these sugars may beviewed as more "wholesome" than processed sugars, the effect onglucose levels is the same . . . a quick-acting simple sugar . . . andundesirable for a diabetic. Info provided about Stevia is particularlyskimpy. The book does have some useful cooking facts, tips andsubstitutions but they are not related to Stevia or its use. All in all, Ifound this book to be a waste. On the bright side, in the same package Ireceived "The Stevia Cookbook" by Sahelian and Gates. It'sWONDERFUL and, unlike "Baking with Stevia," delivers all (andmore!) that it promises re: true sugar-less cooking/baking and LOTS of infoabout Stevia.

Beautiful Christmas (250 Best Ideas for a Memorable Holiday) Review

BeautifulChristmas
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Beautiful Christmas is filled with great ideas, art to scan or copy for your projects, lovely pictures, some recipes (with pictures) and each chapter has a page ofadditional ideas to make your holiday spiffy. The instructions to each project include a picture, a brief description, a list of materials you will need to complete the project and a pattern if necessary. Many idea/project books of this type have only a handful of interesting projects and are more suited to checking out from the library, but this one is in the purchase category! My only negatives would be concerning that the final idea page at the end of each chapter. The font is a handwriting font that is too small and is in a slightly darker tone than the background. These three issues make the pages difficult to read (and I have great eyesight!)I would give the book a 4.5/5 if I could.

Based on the adorable cover, I was anxious to add this book to my collection, however, I was a little disappointed once it got here. If you're going for something cute to take to your child's classroom party, or easy decorating for young children, then this book is for you. To be honest, this is just a glorified version of the Betty Crocker mini-magazines you find at a grocery store check out (as a matter of fact, I own one of those, and there are repeats in this book). If you are thinking of purchasing this book, I recommend you flip through it at a local book store first to make sure it is the level you are looking for.

The Christmas Cookie Deck: 50 Delicious Holiday Confections (Epicurean Delights) Review

TheChristmasCookieDeck:50DeliciousHolidayConfections
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Today, families bake and pass along their treasured family Christmas cookies as heirlooms from past generations. This clever card collection features timeless cookies, family favorites, cookies for gift giving and mailing, and elegant party cookies." - From the deck

The Christmas Cookie Deck by Lou Seibert Pappas includes 50 cards with a festive, colorful photograph on one side and recipe on the other.

Some of the recipes you'll find in this deck include:

*Springerle
*Lebkuchen
*Viennese Marzipan Bells
*Christmas Biscotti
*Dried Cherry-Hazelnut Chocolate Chip Cookies
*Embossed Macadamia Stars
*Coconut-Pecan Toffee Squares
*Tangy Lemon Bars
*Pepparkakor
*Almond-Praline Wafers
*Gianduia Snowballs

In addition to cookies, recipes for bars are also included. While The Christmas Cookie Deck contains familiar recipes such as Sugar Cookies, Gingerbread, and Peanut Butter Blossoms-most of the cookies seem exotic. Not only that, most recipes include nuts (hazelnuts, pistachios, and almonds especially)-and not everyone likes nuts (and some are allergic to them). Also, the recipes call for unsalted butter. I don't know about you, but I only use salted butter so that may prove to be problematic for some individuals.

The photographs are very attractive and festive, but many of the recipes seem complicated, employ ingredients that most won't have on hand (some ingredients I've never heard of before!), and are just not that appealing.

I realize there's no accounting for taste. In addition, some people enjoy going all-out when baking for Christmas. However, if you're looking for time-saving family-friendly recipes-especially ones without nuts-you'll probably want to pass on The Christmas Cookie Deck.

Matthew Mead's Monster Book of Halloween Review

Although Matthew Mead's "Monster Book of Halloween" is itself a great book on Halloween entertaining, it was a disappointment for me having already purchased Matthew's "Halloween Tricks and Treats".In fact, I felt totally ripped off to see the same recipes, pictures, and designs in his second book.

If you are buying one book for Halloween I recommend either of his books, but if you are like me and crave a constant parade of new ideas and creative crafts , buy only one as the second is basically a repeat.

THE NUMBER OF NET CARBOHYDRATES YOU EAT IS THE ONLY NUMBER THAT COUNTS!
Anyone who follows a low-carb regime knows how confusing counting net carbs can be. Dieters are supposed to take the number of carbohydrates listed on nutritional labels and subtract the product's fiber and sugar content in order to get a net carbohydrate value. But who has the time and patience?
Now, for the first time, dieters have access to a book that does all of the work for them. In this one-of-a-kind nutrition counter, nutrition expert Maggie Greenwood-Robinson, Ph.D., has compiled helpful information on net carbohydrates as well as an extensive net carb counter section covering all of the major food groups and brand names.
So stop doing math at the supermarket. This is the only reference you need to take control of the carbs in your life!

New Cook Book, 75th Anniversary Limited Edition Review

NewCookBook,75thAnniversaryLimitedEdition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I didn't get this at Amazon, but received a similar discount. It came to me at a book fair brought to my place of work.At the time one of my co-workers remarked, "are you buying an auto parts manual"?In some ways, he was correct. This book has many similarities to such a book.Auto parts look-up manuals are large books with many divider tabs for easy to get to sections, this book has that. They have many detailed pictorial breakdowns of the parts and the tools needed to perform repairs. This book contains detailed photos on the recipes, the utensils, and cooking equipment to prepare them.

I'm an Engineer by profession, who also has a background in chemistry, so I'm used to following a scripted set of instructions.I've rarely seen any cookbook that is as thorough as this one. There are quick references for choosing spices, performing measurements, selecting meat cuts, even the tastes and textures of various kinds of fish. In addition, anywhere a special technique of mixing, or using a special pot (like a double boiler) is necessary, they have a detailed sidebar to explain it.At the beginning of most sections, there is often a full instructional on how to prepare that type of food, or perform a certain cooking technique (like grilling, BBQ with charcoal, gas or electric).

Now I've bought a number of cookbooks in my time. I have one each for specifics like soups, pizza, crock ware cooking, BBQ, and even bread-making.Most of them cost nearly the price of this book, and though they have some special recipes of their own, this general-purpose book often has more information on the specific topic than the entire book I bought for that subject. I look at this guide as an encyclopedia of cooking and recipes.Just to reinforce the notion that this book is an American icon, the red plaid design of the cover is registered as a US Patent!

A few special features are found near the end of the book. After all the topical recipe sections, you will find an excellent index the individual recipes and other topics. There is even a 75th anniversary section after that that has a collection of near forgotten recipes divided by the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s.Almost to taunt you a little (that the book has not forgotten anything), they include an emergency substitution food ingredient guide, (in case you're caught short on a certain recipe) printed on the inside back cover.

The book itself is constructed in a way most books refuse to do because of the expense. It's an extremely high quality three-ring binder to allow you to remove recipe pages, and then return them to the book.Likewise, if you are inventive, you will want to include your own recipes in the appropriate sections. This type of book allows that too.In fact you can get more recipes at their website, and there's room enough to print-out, and add these to the book as well. The only thing they left out was the food, and the pots to cook it in!
