(More customer reviews)Pros: Perfect
sound, solved resampling issues
Cons: famous popping/crackling noises makes it useless for gaming,
especially in BF2 (which use OpenAL by Creative). Crystallizer is
useless.
This card has the most advanced sound processor which does not work
on at least 20% of high end systems, not only NVidia NForce 4
chipset, but also with other AMD and Intel CPU motherboards: see
Google for "X-Fi popping/crackling".Even if you do not have in game
crackling immediately, you have a good chance to get it after any
memory or HD upgrade or driver configuration change. For long
timeCreative denied existence of this problem. Eventually it was
recognized (see official CL forums) and a new driver (since
November 2005!) was promised at the end of May 2006, but beta
version published 05/30/06 did not solve my problem. In the case of
old audigy 2 zs the problem was solved with unofficial "hacked"
drivers. I suspect that X-Fi crackling is an architecture design
flow, which cannot be completely solved at software level, because
PCI bus cannot provide sufficient memory access for the "the
fastest sound processor" simultaneously with high end graphic card,
HD controller, and other devices.
Bottom end: I have to stop playing games, or go back to low quality
integrated sound. Do not take risk, wait for working drivers, or
buy a working card from different manufacturer. With fixed drivers
I would give this card 4 or 5 stars.
UPDATE 06/12/2006
I found that many desktop motherboards (MB) have really slow south
bridge (south bridge is connecting PCI, USB, Firewire, and HD to
CPU directly or through north bridge), especially MBs with NVidia
chipsets (and even with some Intel MBs). New beta X-Fi driver and
MB BIOS updates solved the problem in many cases (but not for my MB
Asrock K8NF4G-SATA2, nVidia 6100 / 410 MCP chipset), but situation
is still marginal and X-Fi might go unstable again. I contact CL
customer service, they did not solved the problem, but pointed out
that ATI chipsets (Athlon 64, ATI 200 or 3200) have no problems
with X-Fi. I decided not to return SB to seller, but save it for a
new computer with ATI based MB. I guess that majority of
workstation class MBs with upscale south bridge and PCI-X (even
NVidia based) also should be fine with X-Fi. The trouble is that
majority of X-Fi buyers have generic NVidia based MBs like me. So I
can give X-Fi two stars instead of 1 (but I cannot change the
rating), and even more stars if it will work well in my new
computer of after new driver release (if it will work).

(More customer reviews)I recently did some
much needed upgrades for my home office and this by far my
favorite.I first saw it in Best Buy, came home to check for online
reviews and to see if I could find it cheaper...I did at
Amazon!
It's VERY easy to set up and is crystal clear.( I mean, razor sharp
-- no stretched or blurred look anywhere!)However, there was
something not quite right with the colors (especially greens) that
really bothered me.PLUS the HP "My Display" software that goes with
it that contains all of the drivers etc, is not fully functional on
non HP machines. (meaning no calibration was available for color or
contrast beyond what's built into the monitor itself which was
never enough to fix my problem)I was so frustrated and
disappointed.(I had been warned of this on another site but thought
I'd take a gamble)Well, after trying to hook it up via the HDMI
(from VGA) cable that came with it to a new $150 video card -- the
colors were still way off and now the screen was all jumpy from
that stupid card...(that went right back!) Then, I noticed
something when I right clicked on my desktop to adjust my display
settings (in XP pro) there was a selection (that had been there all
along...duh) that said NVIDIA Control Panel (my internal graphics
card) and I was able to calibrate the colors and adjust everything
else there and now everything's hunky dory! When it first boots up,
the colors look a little neon-ish again but within seconds it goes
to the profile I created from my graphics card software.I am sure
many would have figured it out sooner than I did, I just wanted to
prevent anyone else from beating their head against the wall for a
week like I did if I could.(BTW, I have completely removed the
video card that I bought and it's hooked up via VGA and it is still
crisp and clear)
**BTW, even though the My Display software is largely useless for
me, I left it there. For some reason when I uninstalled it, the
light that's under the transparent power button on the top of the
monitor goes away. That was the only noticeable change after
uninstalling it but it annoyed me, so I reinstalled it and it's
back on and I just ignore the software**
My husband and I publish a local magazine that is glossy and full
color and I am able to do so much more with this monitor than I
could before.I can view two (sometimes 3) projects side by side if
need be...I love that! And typing an email in outlook looks like
it's in about a 60 font! And programs like Illustrator where you
need a lot of workspace it's invaluable.I never have to scroll
around to grab or view something. My last monitor was a 19" Sony
flat panel (that cost more than TWICE what this one did 4 years
ago) and I thought it was just fine but once I plugged this lil
beauty in I quickly passed it on to my son for his computer.I
haven't needed to use the portrait position of the screen so I
haven't even tried it.But it came that way when it arrived and was
very easy to swivel back around.
One bad thing...don't count on ditching your speakers for the ones
that come with this one -- man do they stink!I swear my laptop has
better speakers. But it's sort of like people griping that their
cell phone camera doesn't take good enough pictures. If you want a
good camera buy a camera! If you want a good monitor buy this one
and just pretend the speakers aren't even there. The price is way
worth it even without the speakers.

(More customer reviews)You are probably
reading this because you have an old Appletalk-only printer, and
you have just upgraded to a new Mac that only has Ethernet. If so,
you are in the right place.Buy the Asantetalk. It comes with all of
the cables you could possibly need to connect a new Mac to an old
Appletalk printer, whether directly or through an Ethernet hub, and
it works very well.If anything, I think my printing speed is better
from my new, faster Mac going through Ethernet/Asantetalk than it
was with my old Mac printing directly via Appletalk.
A colleague of mine asked me why I would want to spend money on an
Asantetalk when I could go to eBay and get a whole new printer for
just about the same amount.Well, yes, my little Laserwriter 4/600PS
is a cheap little printer, but it still works perfectly, so why
should I just throw it out?Waste not, want not.If I got another
printer, my old one would probably end up cluttering my
closet.(And, should I ever get to the point where I do want to sell
my old Appletalk-only printer, it will be a lot more marketable if
I bundle the Asantetalk in with it!)
Long story short, your mileage may vary, but it was worth it to me
to keep my existing Appletalk printer humming in today's Ethernet
world. If you feel the same way, the Asantetalk is a good way to
go.
The Asantetalk is quite easy to set up and use.Since it is acting
just as a simple network bridge, there is no configuration needed,
just plug both ends (Appletalk/Ethernet) into it and away it
goes.
Another note on ease of use:If you have ever had friends with
similar units, as I have, you may have seen in the past that the
Asantetalk really was not happy unless all of your gear --
Appletalk items including printer, the Asantetalk itself, Ethernet
hub, Mac and other Ethernet stuff -- was powered up in a specific
order. This drove my friends nuts. However, I am happy to report that
Asante has updated the firmware in the device so that it is much
more forgiving and friendly in this regard.Current Asantetalk units
are no longer fussy about power-on order.(Several times, either my
printer or Ethernet hub has gotten unplugged accidentally. In every
case, once I fixed whatever it was that had happened, the ONLY
thing I needed to reset to get my printer to show up again was the
Asantetalk, which is as it should be.)
(By the way, don't forget that most versions of Mac OS X have
Appletalk capability turned OFF by default. You'll have to turn it
on for your Ethernet interface to use your old Appletalk printer
with the Asantetalk.Check your Mac help for how to do this if you
aren't sure.)
As an added bonus, if you have OTHER Appletalk equipment that you
want to connect to your modern home Ethernet network, you can use
standard Localtalk cabling (e.g. Farallon-style phonenet wiring)
and connect a mini-network of up to eight Appletalk devices to the
Asantetalk. This is, for example, a good way to transfer files from
an old Appletalk-only desktop Mac or Powerbook to a modern Mac, or
let an older Mac share the newer one's Internet connection.
So, if you do have any need at all for this one-trick pony, I think
you will find the Asantetalk a very worthwhile addition to your
computing menagerie.

(More customer reviews)This product is
so-so. I have had this unit only for a few days and do not know how
this cooler will continue to perform for the long run. It is
advertised suitable for 17" laptop, but that is not quite accurate.
Its foot print is much smaller than my 17" laptop. The two 70mm
fans are extremely silent and does only a fair job in cooling off
my laptop under normal use. This product has an interesting design
for a laptop cooler with its dual air intake pulling the airflow
from the back of the unit instead from underneath, all packed in a
plastic case of poor quality. In other words, while this cooler has
great potential, it falls short in design and performance. My
recommendation is to put this product back to the drawing table and
with the right improvements it will turn out to be a superb
product.
Anthony.

(More customer reviews)First of all, the
installation of this product is relatively straightforward but the
default factory settings will leave your system open (unsecure). In
these times of increasing cases of hacking and with more and more
wireless products being available, security is a major concern and
you should make your first assignment to secure your system from
attacks.
There are several options available for securing your connection
that include eliminating the broadcast of your wireless network
name (SSID), setting up encryption manually or automatically
(either 64 or 128 bit) by using an optional passphrase and
filtering out MAC addresses.
Now, setting up the Wireless Access Point is not as straightforward
as it seems, and here's where the documentation should be a bit
clearer. The WAP setup has a web-based interface that requires an
Internet browser such as MSIE or Netscape.
The default IP address (and URL) of the WAP is 192.168.2.254 with a
Class C subnet mask (255.255.255.0), you could care less about it,
but it is very important to know.In order for you to configure the
WAP, you must set up your PC IP address (either the wireless client
or the host PC that you will use to connect to the WAP) on the same
subnet as this default address on the WAP.In my case, my DSL router
belongs to a 192.168.1.xxx subnet, so I had to change my address
temporarily to a valid one(192.168.2.100) as explained in the
manual.Fortunately, the WAP setup allows you to change the WAP's
default IP address to suit your needs.
About applying firmware updates:
Problems arise when you apply new firmware, a common procedure that
everyone should do when acquiring these kind of equipment, but
should be very careful when doing so.
Firmware updates bring improvements, fixes and new features to your
WAP and keeps it up to date. The problem I had was that the firmware
changed the WAP's default IP address to 192.168.2.1, something I
found out after researching networking.belkin.com.
The second issue was that my security settings were erased and my
saved settings were not completely recovered, apparently because of
some format compatibility issue not documented anywhere.Luckily, I
put everything on paper and I was able to set everything back the
way it was but believe me, looking at a "page not found" error
after a firmware update is not for the faint of heart.
Now about client connectivity.I own a DSL router connected to a
simple 8-port 10MBps hub.I connected my WAP in one of the ports on
the hub.My laptop (with a PCMCIA wireless card) immediately found
the WAP.Reception should be fine if yourwireless clients reside
across open areas.Closed rooms are another story. In my case,
although my bedroom (closed area) is much closer in distance to the
WAP, there was no reception initially and noise was higher than in
the living room (open area). For this reason I had to place the WAP
in a more direct line of sight to my bedroom and in a higher
position to allow for better reception. This required a longer
patch cable than the 6-inch UTP cable included with the WAP.
In summary, if you are familiar with networking PCs and know how
your network is set up then you shouldn't have any problems
installing and using this product, otherwise I'd recommend bringing
someone with networking experience to help out.

(More customer reviews)I really wish that
I could give this Apple product 5 stars, write some words of
praise, and be on my way, but unfortunately I would feel
uncomfortable recommending this monitor.
For two full years, this monitor was great. The resolution is
generous, it is bright, and the fully digital ADC interface is
perfect. Colors look good from a wide range of angles. The casing
is smart and takes up little space, and it's easy to clean. The
touch-sensitive power and brightness buttons are a nice touch that
you expect from Apple.
Unfortunately, after two years, the top half of my display suddenly
went dim, which is extremely annoying. I wouldn't post a negative
review here just because I got unlucky. I am posting here because
hundreds of customers have seen their displays fail within the
first two years. Just look at Apple's discussion boards to see for
yourself. (I can't post URLs in reviews.) Apple has not
acknowledged that this is a widespread problem, and repair costs
exceed that of a new display. It is also unclear as to whether or
not this problem has been fixed in newer models.

(More customer reviews)I found the docking
station to be very easy to use. It's great for recording TV or
movies onto your player to watch later and the AVI format allows
you to store lots of stuff. You can also set a timer to record TV
shows like you would on a traditional VCR or DVR. The recorder even
comes with it's own universal remote to use on your cable box or TV
(I admit I haven't quite figured it out yet). Also, the station
charges your player while you record so it won't die on you in the
middle of recording a show. Apparently it will record up to 2 gig
before making a new file which means it shouldn't break up your
DVDs into more than one file. The station automatically formats
protected media into special locked files. My only complaint is
that copy protected files can't be played back on a TV or computer
which can be annoying if you want to enjoy your saved DVDs on a
normal sized screen. And it's tricky to rename those files on the
computer because you can't open them to see what's what if they are
protected. What does it mean? You aren't going to be able to share
the movie watching experience on many files because of the
protection. However, it's great for recording for personal use and
you can even use it to entertain the kids in the car. I threw a
couple of Spongebob's on my player via the station and my son was
absorbed for the 40 minute ride to my parents. If you want to get
the most out of your player you should buy this product.

(More customer reviews)Simply amazing! I
must say, this has to be one of the most sophisticated pieces of
electronic equipment that I've ever owned. I don't even know where
to begin. Did I mention this thing is amazing?
I was running a Bose Lifestyle 48 prior to this, but when I finally
decided to make the most of HDMI connections, I shelved the Bose
and stepped up to the ONKYO. What a breath of fresh air! There are
so many features of the TX-NR906 that I like. Starting with the
remote control--I'm sure it's common practice nowadays for receiver
remotes to be fairly smart, but this guy is really bright. I've
managed to teach it all the commands from my three main remote
controls (TV, BD & CD Players), more or less, just by pointing
the controllers at each other and clicking. I'm referring to
commands that aren't usually part of a universal controller's
arsenal. The large number of connection choices are really coming
in handy, as well. I'm maxing out the HDMI inputs and have one of
the two outputs connected to my TV. There's a ton of digital audio
options as well. The front panel offers a number of connection
choices, including a USB port for playing MP3s.
Another aspect of this receiver that I really like is the fact that
this system not only sounds phenomenal when playing movies, but
sounds equally as incredible playing CDs or listening to music from
my PC. With previous systems it always seemed like one was better
than the other, but with the TX-NR906, I really feels like I'm
getting audiophile quality sound from all components. Oh yeah, did
I mention? HD FM radio sounds phenomenal! I don't have XM or Sirius
yet, but that's on the short list of near term upgrades. There's an
antennae connection for both.
This receiver is the hub of my home theater. Putting things in
perspective, my setup includes a Samsung LN46A750 46-Inch 1080p
DLNA LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color, Panasonic DMP-BD30K 1080p
Blu-ray Disc Player, a Sony 5-Disc Carousel CD Player,Dell XPS
Pentium D 3.0 GHz/3.0 GB RAM/VisionTek Radeon HD4850 512MB GDDR3
PCI Express Graphics Card, Playstation 3 80GB, Motorola digital
cable box/DVR , and Aperion Audio's Intimus 5T Hybrid HD speaker
system. All this, combined with the TX-NR906, really sounds and
looks incredible. I'm utilizing HDMI for video on all components.
I'm also supplementing the digital cable box's audio with a coaxial
cable. Similarly, I'm augmenting the BD Player's audio by
connecting audio cables via the multichannel jacks.
I bought the TX-NR906 in October 2008 and so far, I haven't found
anything I dislike. The only minor thing I will point out is with
the remote control. When you are teaching it commands from your
other remotes, you might have to try it a couple of times. At
first, I thought that some of the commands weren't going to be able
to be taught, but I stuck with it and eventually was able to teach
it all commands. No big deal, just don't give up if it doesn't work
right away.
Whether you're watching HD TV, listening to your favorite music,
watching the latest release on Blu-Ray, or playing the hottest
shooter on your PC or PS3--if you have the money, this receiver is
the perfect addition to any home theater.

Linksys BEFW11S4 802.11b router for few years now. Other than
somewhat short range, it has never let me down. After looking at
cheaper alternatives, I bought the AirPort Extreme Base Station
(AEBS) as my second WiFi router.
Pros:
- Looks really really really cute... and small, too
- Better signal strength than Linksys BEFW11S4
- Innovative USB printer support
- Superb AirPort Admin Utility and tight Mac OS X integration
- Bridging with other WiFi station via WDS (for expanding the
range)
- Wall mountable (comes with wall mounting kit)
- AOL and RADIUS server support
Cons:
- Susceptible to signal loss (i.e., when using the microwave
oven)
- Pricier than most 802.11g router
- No web-based configuration interface
- Only 1 LAN port
When you run the AirPort Admin Utility for the first time, it might
detect an older firmware and proceed to upgrade itself
automatically (if you let it, of course). The new firmware (5.0.4
as I write this) fixes WiFi connection drop issue. For some strange
reason, the problem persisted until I manually downloaded and
uploaded the latest firmware. I've tinkered with the channel
selection to get the optimum results. Running the microwave oven
may cause WiFi connection to drop still, however.
The AirPort Admin Utility is a pleasure to use, which is also full
of features. Among the options are choosing among 11 WiFi channels;
operating in 802.11b, 802.11g or mix mode; setting the transmission
power from 10 to 100%; setting up Internet via DHCP, static IP,
PPPoE, or AOL DSL; and mapping ports. You can improve security via
40-bit or 128-bit WEP, create a closed network by hiding SID
(Station ID), and add access control (MAC address filtering).
By the way, if you are running Windows, go to Apple's web site and
download the AirPort Admin Utility for Windows. It does not specify
AEBS, but trust me... it works.
Oh, did I mention how beautiful AEBS is? I tucked my ugly Linksys
where no one can see (which probably hinders WiFi broadcast), but
not so with AEBS. Located on the front are beautiful metallic Apple
logo and three graphite status indicators (WiFi, power, and
Ethernet). Located on the rear are reset button, 100/10BASE-T WAN
port, 100/10BASE-T LAN port, USB printer port, and AC power adapter
port (very long power cable is included). If you need more than one
LAN port, you will need to mate AEBS with an Ethernet hub.
The signal level's stronger than Linksys BEFW11S4. I get full
signal virtually everywhere in my apartment, including those where
Linksys frequently gave up. If you need greater range (larger
house), consider bridging ABES with another ABES via built-in WDS
support (Wireless Distribution System) or purchase ABES with Modem
and Antenna Port (and one of few external ABES antennas
available).
Finally, I must mention its built-in USB printer port. Hookup one
of many supported printers via USB and you will be able to print
wirelessly via Mac OS X's Rendezvous feature. Neat!

Time Machine since I upgraded to Leopard. While Time Machine is
great for backing up my iMac, its a pain to have to hook up my Mac
Book Pro and new Mac Book Air to an external hard drive. The Time
Capsule is great for that.So long as my laptop is open and running,
a backup can happen.
Make sure you remember to do your first backup using
ethernet.Otherwise it is going to be slow.Apple does not want to
bog down your network with backups, so when you are backing up
wirelessly, it will intentionally throttle the connection sped.
This device also functions as a wireless router.I was able to
remove my previous Air Port Extreme from the network. The large size
is nice because you are able to share one large drive and backup
several smaller computers. My iMac and laptop all backup just
fine.
The device does run a little hot.The Best Way to Backup a Mac

(More customer reviews)I use this device
primarily to convert the AVI files from my Canon Powershot S3 to
H.264 (using a MacBook 1.83GHz Core Duo).I only timed 3 tests but
was convinced after seeing conversions with the Turbo.264 that were
5 times faster when compared with QuickTime Pro (using equivalent
export settings). In addition to the much quicker conversions, the
CPU usage was relatively low (50%) such that the fan didn't kick
into high gear like it normally does (and allowed me to continue
using the computer without it feeling sluggish).
It also converted a Video_TS folder (only the main 2.5 hr
VOB/feature) in about 90 minutes.Although I didn't time it without
the Turbo.264, this type of conversion would normally take all
night (~8 hrs).
Be sure to check out Elgato's website/FAQ/forums to better
understand what you're getting with this device. It doesn't really
let you fine tune the export settings but the built-in defaults
cover a decent range which worked perfectly for me (edit: the newer
software allows more customization).
UPDATE Feb 2008: There are some complaints floating around
regarding the conversion speed for certain file formats such as
over-the-air HDTV.I rarely use the Turbo.264 to transcode OTA HDTV
to H.264 but my own testing shows a 2.1X speed improvement over
standard Quicktime or 1.9X faster than Handbrake (using identical
output settings). Also, the Turbo.264 will not work with Handbrake
(since that program uses something other than the Quicktime
components for encoding).Lastly, the Turbo.264 does not currently
support multiple-pass encoding, and it cannot output to higher than
800x600 (due to hardware limitations). So you may want to take this
into consideration if these things are important to you.

(More customer reviews)As an Apple
devotee, I feel like a bit of a traitor writing a positive review
of an HP product, but WOW this thing is great! I bought it as a
second monitor to my MacBook. Apple MacBook MA701LL/A 13.3"
Notebook PC (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive,
DVD/CD SuperDrive) - BlackThe color is brilliant, the contrast is
impressive, the text pops and it's just plain beautiful to look at,
even if you are working. I literally find myself working on things
because I don't want to take my eyes off it.
While I love the look of Apple's cinema monitors, the price point
is just so high. The HP w2207 represents a far more reasonable
price point. Also, if you're a writer like me, HP makes a clip
system for this series of monitors, so you can have a document
holder off to the side without having to glue something to side of
your monitor untiil the end of time.
If you're an art director, graphic designer, or similar artists
thinking, "Ah-ha, this guy's a copywriter. What does he know about
monitors?" Well I've been in advertising since 1996 and I've seen
all kinds of monitors and this is one of the most impressive I've
ever seen at any price.
Also, I took sometime to compare this model to others available for
sale from a variety of manufacturers and no one matches the image
quality in my opinion. This might seem strange for HP to come out
on top in comparison to other companies that specialize in
monitors, but the truth is people largely, buy their computers
based on the quality and look of the monitor. Apple realized this
early on and apparently someone told HP too. I wonder how many HP
computer bundles are going to be sold based on the performance of
this beauty?
Sure, it takes a little adjustment both on the monitor itself and
on the display portion of the system preferences, but it's easy
enough.
Plus, the built in speakers are much better than you'd expect from
a monitor and the built in 2 USB hub is a nice little touch. More
would have been better, but an extra usb port is always nice.
All of this said, there are some flaws with this monitor.
1. The rotating screen landscape-or-portrait function is great, but
it doesn't work with the MacBook in Mac mode. What I'm talking
about is the ability to physically turn the monitor and have the
display go into a portrait arrangement. It's probably too much to
ask for from a monitor made by a PC manufacturer, but it would have
been nice if the software bundle would have included something for
us, Mac people. It still works with the MacBook just fine in
landscape mode, but it would have been nice to have this particular
bell and whistle.
2. The monitor does have a DVI connection as well as an analog VGA
connection, but it only comes with an analog VGA wire. Don't settle
for VGA, when there's DVI to be had! Order a DVI wire with your
order like this one.Cables To Go 2m DVI-D M/M Dual Link Digital
Video Cable The response time is appreciably faster than with VGA.
It's slight, but it's there.
3. Hopefully, this won't be an issue, but its warranty is for only
one year, while others come with a three year warranty. This is a
little disconcerting, but I'd rather have one year of looking at
this screen than 3 years of looking at washed out or drab
monitor.
4. The screen does pick up reflections more readily than other flat
panels.
And even with these shortcomings, I've still got to give it 5
stars. It's just that beautiful!
UPDATE: Although mine did not, this monitor now does come with a
DVI cable. So you won't need to buy one separately.

(More customer reviews)Got one of these
for Xmas.Good construction, simple design, basic black/yellow color
scheme looks good enough for something that will be tucked
underneath my computer workstation - though there are keyholes on
the module for wall mounting, if so desired. It certainly looks more
interesting than traditional power strips if you must display it
for all to see...
This thing is a MUST for anybody that has to plug in more than two
transformer/converter "wall wart" power adapters. All outlets are
grounded "three-prong" plug style as well, so compatability will
never be an issue.
The only way that I could see any improvement on this basic design
idea, would be to add more outlets.
