(More customer reviews)THE SHORT VERSION: My picky cats took to this immediately and it seems to have helped them with their digestive (throwing up) issues. The ingredients are much healthier than the standard "animal by-products" found in even the pricier pet food brands (IAMS, Pedigree, Fancy Feast, etc.). Even though it's a little more expensive, I think it's worth it. This company also makes a similar product for dogs that is packaged in a similar-looking bag, so make sure you get the correct stuff.

Now for the longer version...

PRO:
(1) Healthier for the cats! No scary bits-and-pieces-by-products ingredients! Many pet food brands - many "premium" pet-food brands have the exact same disgusting ingredients as el cheapo store brands, but charge you three times the price and give you the false idea that you're feeding your pets well.

(2) Small pieces -- my cats don't seem to like the bigger kibble sizes. The dog food version of this has much larger pieces with little peas/carrots mixed in.

(3) Nice packaging -- I like these plastic bags much more than the standard paper bags (that often tear) and the cardboard boxes (that are easily dumped by the cats). Plus, if the water dish gets knocked over, it won't soak through the bag and make the food soggy and gross.

(4) Did I mention healthier for the pets? Seriously, everyone should find out what's in standard pet food, because it's completely disgusting and in no way safe or healthy for pets. While I won't be eating my pets' food any time soon, at least with Halo I know that (technically) I probably could. And if I had little kids running around, I'd rather have a brand of pet food like this around in case curious kids decide to taste it.

CON:
(1) Harder to find -- I have been purchasing this from my local organic store. I have not seen it carried at any other grocery/drugstore and I live in a fairly large metropolitan area. It may be carried at a PETCO/other pet chain, but the last time I went into a big pet box store, there were NO healthy cat foods. Everything had byproducts and gross stuff. So I haven't been back to one of those to check for HALO. Since PETCO apparently carries it online now, they are probably carrying it in the stores as well. But it doesn't seem to be any cheaper there than at my organic store, so I'll stick to the local store. Speaking of price...

(2) Cost -- It's not a ridiculous price and is certainly worth it when you compare ingredients, but it's hard to get other family/friends to buy good stuff for their own pets when they can pick up el cheapo pet food for a buck or two. I'm trying to find it online for a little cheaper, but so far (once S+H is factored), haven't found it yet. I'd also like to buy it in bulk, but haven't found that yet either.

MINOR ANNOYANCE:
The Bag Design - HALO carries wet and dry food for cats and dogs. They also seem to carry the same flavor for each animal - for instance, there is Wild Salmon Cat Food and Wild Salmon Dog Food. Now, the first time I buy a new food brand for the cats, I do exactly what I do for myself: I turn the package over and read the description and all the ingredients before buying. When I go to buy more, I don't usually read it. So I just grabbed the pink bag that said HALO and Spot's Stew - Wild Salmon. When I dumped some of the food into my cats' bowl, the kibbles were about twice the size and also had little peas and carrots in it. I thought that was weird, but assumed they had changed the packaging. Then when I put the bag back into the cabinet, I noticed something - in the picture on the front of the bag, the woman was holding a dog. Not a cat. And of course, then I read it, saw that it saw DOG FOOD, and felt kind of silly. But you know, pink bag, watercolor-like picture of woman with an animal, had the correct flavor and brand...anyway, the cats were not really that interested in the dog food, but they ate about a bowl or so and also had wet food until I could get back to the organic store for cat food. Luckily, I had someone to give the dog food to so it didn't go to waste. If you're buying this, make sure it says cat food. The bags are similar and if you're in a hurry and not paying attention, you might end up with the wrong stuff.

Apparently Ellen Degeneres is a co-owner of this company, which is cool, I guess, so if you need a celebrity thumbs-up before you buy anything, you've got at least one!

(More customer reviews)I bought this crock in February and I have now just opened it up after trying my first batch of saurkraut. It turned out great. I like it much more than any store bought brand. I'm eating my first bites of it as I type this review. This crock really works. I've never made saurkraut before and I have to admit it was realatively easy. You do have to place the crock in a warm place for a few days to get the fermentation started. You want a good start so no spoiling will occur. After you hear bubbles escaping from the lid then you know it's at work. The aroma is distinct at this time. You don't want to go at it too long or all of the sugars will be used up and you will have really sour saurkraut. Then you put the crock in a cooler area (in the 50's to low 60's) for 3 plus weeks. This period is a slow fermentation period that develops the aroma of the finished saurkraut. The longer you can leave it the better. I think it is important to note that at this time you have just purchased a crock but you've had to wait over a month before even opening the lid. So.. I'm glad I bought the 7.5 L size. I think it is enough to make 8 or more quart mason jars of finished saurkraut. You may end up leaving it in the crock for over 6 weeks. The longer the better the flavor gets. There are other recipies of pickled vegetables that I'm anxious to try. Alas I only have one crock and these are rather expensive. I wish I had two of them. They are heavy, and of good quality. The water seal really works. I highly recommend this if you want to make fermented foods. Now I need to cook up some hot dogs! (p.s. - Use good, organic cabbage). 5 Stars!

(More customer reviews)I bought a turkey thanksging 2003 and used my new 18 quart Nesco .My husband and I are not turkey lovers.My nesco roaster made my 17cents a pound turkey tender, moist, and flavorful with just paprika, salt, pepper, 1 cup oil and butter, and chopped onion, carrots, celery.Yum-Yum-yum.Iused the nesco 6 quart roaster to make soup, cooking slowly all night the bones and previously cooked chopped vegetables adding rest next day etc.I am a caretaker of 95 year old alzheimer patient with no teeth.She ate turkey without chopping it, because it was so tender and moist.

(More customer reviews)I chose a top-element dehydrator as it's easier to clean (no drips onto the bottom element.) This dehydrator has sturdy, slightly flexible plastic trays. It's a bit noisy; when the heat goes on there is a whine I don't like, and the fan of course is noisy too. So making dehydrated foods (takes hours) needs a separate room, maybe the cellar.
The price is right on this dehydrator, but you need sheets for making jerky and fruit leathers. They aren't included (that's the minus-a-star) but you can pick them up at kitchen supply stores.

(More customer reviews)I am very pleased with this product.I have the smaller Foreman Grill but needed something larger and this was it.With removable grills, the clean up was much easier than the Foreman grill.Another advantage of this grill over the Foreman grills is the oil drainage trays are built inside and do not just sit on the counter waiting to be knocked over.Make sure to spray the trays with cooking oil prior to using.I have cooked 2-3 lb London Broils, semi boneless steaks, chicken breast and ground beef with this grill and love it.I used it twice just this weekend and am really pleased.It is not 100% the same as outdoor BBQ grilling but for indoors year round cooking, it is fine.

Waring MG-800 Pro Professional Meat Grinder, Brushed Stainless Steel Review

(More customer reviews)I am a hunter who butchers 8-10 deer per year and make my own burger & sausage. I have previously used "hand crank" grinders and smallish electric grinders. While both will do the job for a deer or two, due to the volume I am processing it was time for an "upgrade".
When I made the decision to buy my own grinder, I did a lot of research to determine which model would best suit my needs at an affordable price. Based on the features, motor power, quality and price I decided to try the Waring MG800. If this didn't work, my next step would be a used commercial grinder.
Let me tell you, I am impressed ! This grinder is everything advertised and more. The construction is rugged and the components are well designed. My first night I ground and vaccuum packed 20 lbs of sausage in 1/2 hour (only 5-10 minutes were actually spent grinding). The grinder never clogged and you can literally feed the hopper with your hand, the screw is so well designed that it actually draws the meat down the throat without the use of the "pusher" that is provided. Clean up is a snap due to the ease of disassembly and cast stainless housing. Power is more than adequate, and with the 5 year motor warranty you can't go wrong.
Two things to note, the blades and plates are carbon steel and must be thoroughly washed and dried before storage or they will rust (but this is also true with $1000 grinders). Also, don't be fooled by people advertising 850, 1000 or even 1200 watt plastic grinders on E-bay. This grinder may be 450 watts, but it is a true 450. The "1000 watt" grinders are actually more like 200 watt in use, so be careful.

(More customer reviews)I had bought muffin top pans a few years ago, from a different manufacturer, and they were just plain awful.I really liked the idea of a pan like this that actually worked, and after reading the reviews, I decided to buy two of them.They are even better than I had hoped for.I have multiple allergies and have to use non-wheat flours, so I was understandably skeptical when I mixed up the first batch.They turned out perfectly.With many non-wheat flours, you won't get the rise and height that you would with wheat flour, because the gluten just isn't there in the right quantity.That aside, the muffins were excellent, and very moist.The muffins slid right out with no problems, and nothing stuck.Does it get any better than that?This is one of the few non-stick pans that I've used, that actually didn't stick.Quick release and nothing is left behind.I have several pieces of Chicago Metallic backeware; they are a little more expensive than other brands, but there is very high quality, and they are worth every penny.I am seriously considering buying two more of these pans.They do just what they are supposed to and are very easy to use.This is the best non-stick item I have ever used, and it is the only one that worked the way it was supposed to.I'd give it ten stars, but Amazon only goes as high as five.

(More customer reviews)My parents received a roaster in 1941 as a wedding gift. All my warm holiday memories featured the traditional turkey and dressing in the roaster. Needless to say it's 2008 and the old roaster is tiring just a bit. The enamel cookwell is fissuring in 2 spots and the rack has had to be welded.

So this year I splurged and purchased this roaster with the stainless steel cookwell just in time for Thanksgiving!

The only negative is the burn in! Now I wasn't around in 1941 when my parents received theirs but I don't remember my mom complaining about a burn in in later years. Anyway I took the roaster OUTSIDE (that's crucial), removed the cookwell, paperwork etc..... and turned it on. 1 hour later the smell was horrific, 2 more hours no change, 8 hours and the smell was still BAD, VERY BAD!!

I turned the roaster off after the 8 hour burn in and since it still stank I did another 8 hour burn the next day and by the end of 16 hours of total burn time the 'stench' had died down. The strength of the stench worried me. The last thing I wanted to do was ruin the Thanksgiving 20 pounder so I plopped a 5 pound frying chicken in the roaster, turned the roaster to 350 and left it cook for 2 hours.

At first I was worried because there was still a little residual smell at the start of the cook but within a few minutes all you could smell was the heavenly roasting bird. 2 hours later the chicken was falling off the bone tender. The entire bird simply slide off the bone as I attempted to lift it gingerly out of the roaster.

The spices had deeply penetrated and my husband and I stood at the roaster and feasted upon the fallen chicken pieces left in the roaster. It was the best roast chicken we had had in recent memory.

Clean up, oh the dreaded clean up, as the old roaster aged cleaning got more and more difficult and it was a much dreaded and hated task. I purchased the stainless cookwell to hopefully facilitate cleanup and now began clean up with much trepidation. Was I pleasantly suprised. After washing out all the organic bits I simply sprayed with a little oven cleaner put the roaster lid on and snickered knowing my husband would end up being stuck with the cleaning next morning. Boy was the joke on me! The next morning ALL the inside was clean and after a quick sponging with some dishwashing liquid the stainless steel cookwell was clean!

So for the first time in the past 20 years that I've been responsible for roasting the bird I am NOT dreading the clean up portion of the program and for me THAT alone is worth 5 stars!

(More customer reviews)I adopted a cat about 8 months ago from the Humane Society, and discovered pretty quickly that he did great on canned foods, but dry foods would always give him loose stools if not diarrhea.I'm fine with feeding wet only for the most part; after all cats do need a wet diet and dry foods are mainly just a convenience product.But that being said, sometimes I'd like to have a getaway for 24-48 hours without having to arrange a pet sitter for such a short time.Any longer than that and of course I'd have someone come to look after him, or take him with me.I tried several brands of dry foods which were supposed to be premium, including Eagle pack Ocean fish flavor, Innova EVO, California Natural with Chicken and Rice (also made by Innova), and Blue Buffalo.He couldn't digest any of them and I ended up donating all of them back to the Humane Society.I finally quit experimenting and did what I should have done to begin with, called the vet.They suggested I come in for some free samples of food, and I was given Eagle Pack chicken and rice, which the vet recommends for diarrhea-prone cats (and canine formula for dogs).I literally cringed when I put a small handfull of it on top of his wet food for the first time.Even the Eagle Pack ocean fish formula hadn't worked for my boy, but I've since learned that too much fish doesn't sit well with him.I was so sure the Chicken formula would result in horrible, watery diarrhea too, but it did not!His stools are really solid with this food, and I can tell he's feeling good too, by the way he cuddles and plays--he's older and the least playful cat I've ever seen, so for him to attack my leg is actually a big deal.I don't understand why this food works for him when the Innova chicken/rice formula didn't, but I do have faith in Eagle Pack.It's good quality, locally produced (at least for me), reasonably priced at my small local food store, and the ingredients all come from the USA instead of China.

(More customer reviews)I have yet to find a superior dry cat food. I prefer to feed my cat a raw diet, but sometimes it isn't possible. An apartment doesn't have a place for an extra freezer so unfortunately a raw diet isn't feasible. This food is the closest to a raw diet you can get in a dry kibble. NO GRAIN and all meat proteins, exactly how cats want it. And like other reviewers commented, cats LOVE it. My cat always runs hopefully to his CORE storage bin when I start to open it and cries and begs until it is on his dish. My cat's coat is glossy, thick, healthy and barely sheds. His eyes are clear and bright. He has tons of energy and every year his vet is impressed with how healthy he is. No digestive problems, and no kidney problems that are so common in cats fed grain cat food.
I strongly recommend this cat food!
