Guitar Chords - The Foundation for Rock Music


Guitar chords can be considered the foundation for rock music. Many times, a songwriter will put together a chord progression, which is just a sequence of chords that is repeated in the song verses, the chorus, or both. From that initial chord progression, every other aspect of the song can be imagined and written - the bass line, drum riffs, tempo, guitar lead, etc. You get the picture.
To illustrate this point, this is how The Beatles began writing. Early in their careers, John Lennon and Paul McCartney would get together with their guitars and come up with the chord progressions and riffs that would later turn into some of the most memorable music of all time.
As a guitarist songwriter, whether you start a song with a guitar riff or a chord progression, you will be working with chords early in the songwriting process. Sometimes the tune will call for a different tone, one that a basic chord doesn't provide. This is why it is important to build your arsenal of guitar chords.
I've talked about basic guitar chords and their forms in previous articles. You'll find once you've learned these, there are some additional forms that you will want to learn to round out your tonal palette. For example, there are sustained chords, diminished chords, minor seventh chords and barre chords. All in all, there are thousands of potential chords.
Fortunately, you don't have to learn them all. As long as you memorize the handful of chord forms (check out my other articles), you'll have no trouble coming up with interesting chord changes and substitutes for basic chords in your songs. It will take some time to put your knowledge into practice, but it is time well spent.

Guitar Tabs For Beginners


In this article I will try to give a few examples of guitar tabs for beginners. Before I do that, just a quick run through of just what these are.
Music comes in two forms. Firstly written or sheet music. Secondly is tablature which is shortened to tabs. The notation is different but tablature is easier to use. When looking at a music sheet you will see six horizontal lines. They represent the guitar strings. Secondly you will see a series of 0, 1, 2 at various places on the lines. These numbers refer to finger placement and fret positions on the guitar stock. As the song progresses the places to put your fingers changes. I won't go into detail here at the moment. You will need to look elsewhere for learning how to actually play and read music.
So to a few of my favorites of mine.
The Star. yes that's right Twinkle, twinkle little star how I wonder what you are..
From the Poem by Jane Taylor.
The first verse would look something like this below.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are!
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky!
This would be represented like this on a musical tab.
Third string down or G, --------2-2--4-4-2--0-0-----------------
and the forth string or D,--0-0--------------------4-4--2-2--0h--
Now you would think all musical songs would be written or tabulated in the same way. I am afraid this not the case.
The arts world loves to create. Take the simple tune of Happy Birthday for example. Easy enough you would think. So did I until I started looking around.
It would appear the tab for this is not as straight forward as I thought.
I found several different interpretations of this very basic tune. Even the way the score was shown was different in some cases. May be the atmosphere at the parties had something to do with it.
I am sorry to say it's not something you can pick up over night and play the next day with ease.
Reading, understanding and playing music needs to be learnt or taught to the person wishing to play.
Another part of learning to play is practice, practice and yet more practice. I supposes it like anything you want to do really well at.

Learn to Play Guitar Chords - Five Mistakes to Knock Out When Learning Guitar Chords


To learn to play guitar chords seems tough at the beginning, almost impossible, but before quitting, remember that the world's greatest guitarists started out just like you and some of them couldn't even bend their fingers around the fretboard. Guitar chords are one of the most important aspects of this beautiful instrument and it doesn't matter what kind of guitar you play, acoustic, electric or classic, a consistent understanding about chords is necessary. But since theory is boring, many students skip the chords lessons trying to take on the guitar directly and starting to make their own music, but if you're not a total genius in this instrument, this is totally wrong.
The best thing to do if you want to learn to play guitar chords is to identify the most common mistakes, and also to identify your own "bad-habits". In this article, I'm going to show 5 of the most common mistakes that people learning guitar chords are doing and you should avoid.
1. The first and the most basic mistake not only playing chords on guitar but for the entire guitar play is a wrong posture. Many beginners tend to bend their body over the guitar to look at the strings or even to "listen" closely to the sounds which is pretty dumb. A wrong posture fatigues your whole body and affects your playing. So, the first step to learn to play guitar chords is keep a loosen posture, relax your hands as much as possible and you'll see that everything will go right.
2. Another important mistake to be knocked out if you're to learn to play guitar chords is not visualizing the chord itself. As I said previously, most students tend to look at the fretboard and at their fingers instead of visualizing the position of their fingers. To correct this try playing with your eyes closed and hear the music instead of looking at it.
3. Many beginners practice with one single chord which is totally wrong. That's because they don't understand the learning process and they focus on the chord that sounds good to them. To learn to play guitar chords properly you need to practice with at least 3 chords at the time combining them all the time and creating new exercises. This also helps you develop a faster fingering technique.
4. The pinky is as much important as the other fingers of your fretting hand but some people leave it out of business completely, some even hide it behind the fretboard. All your fingers must be hovering over the strings all the time! For example, when you play a D chord, your pinky finger must be somewhere over the high E or B.
5. Another bad-habit for playing chords is not picking the chord. Sometimes by strumming a chord you will see that you're hitting dead notes. It's a good thing to stop and repeat until you do it right, but a more experienced guitar player will pick each note separately to analyse fast which string is giving the dead note. What you can do is apply more pressure or get a better position for your fingers.

• Barred chords: Also known as closed chords, one has to press the chords before strumming to produce the desired tune.
3. Music Interval: A good guitarist should learn the music interval of each song he/she is trying to master. Listening to a wide variety of songs can help you hone this ability to identify intervals. These dictate the strumming speed. Slow paced songs have wide music intervals. Alternatively, songs with a faster pace have narrower intervals.
4. Changing of Strings: This is easier to do then it sounds. String changing is part of instrument maintenance and something you'll have to do eventually. The first step is to use the tuning pegs to sag the string which makes for easy removal. Proceed to remove the strings and replace with new ones. Lastly, tighten the tuning pegs and you're done.
5. How to Tune: The tuning pegs are used for tuning the guitar. By rotating the tuning peg, you tune the string that has been attached to that specific tuner.

Learn to Play Guitar - 3 Easy Rock Songs For Acoustic Guitar


There have been some great rock tunes written on the acoustic guitar, and many of those are pretty darn easy to play for beginners as well.
I've assembled a list of 3 easy to play rock songs on the acoustic guitar. If you're just starting out so long as you know your major and minor chords you should be able to figure these out.
I've provided the chords you need to know for each song, and if you would like the exact pattern you can always look for the chord progression on a guitar tab website. The best way to learn them how ever is probably to listen to the songs a couple of times and then pick them out by ear.
Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - Green Day
I can still remember playing this song. There are a few variations of it floating around, some easier then others, but over all it's probably the easiest and most fun song on the list.
There are only four chords in the whole song: G, C, D and Em.
Listen to the song and I'm sure you'll be able to pick up your guitar after the first verse and chorus and begin to play along. This is also a great song to strum and sing at the same time if you're able to.
Patience - Guns N' Roses
Everyone who's a guitar fan loves a little GNR. This is one of the classics on their second album Lies. This is one of the only acoustic hits Guns N Roses had during their original career, not counting their recent come back.
You can play this song on the acoustic with only five different chords: C, G, D, A and Em.
There are several great tabs and chord sites which have the pattern out there but I believe if you listen to the song a couple of times you'll pick it up pretty quick knowing that those are the chords used.
About A Girl - Nirvana
I couldn't leave this song off the list since it's one of the first songs I learned to play on the acoustic guitar. Another easy one for beginners Kurt Cobain was never known for his complexity but rather his simplicity.
The best version of this song to learn was recorded on their live MTV unplugged concert in the early nineties. If you can get a hold of that version it's fantastic on the acoustic.
To play about a girl you'll need to know the chords: Em, G, C# and F#
This is another great song to sing and play if you can.
