You can buy wired headphones for $600, so why not throw a
pricey cordless pair into the mix? That seems to be
Sennheiser's approach, which quietly launched the RS
220 wireless headphones at CES Unveiled in New York City tonight.
The cord-free cans pipe analog, coaxial or optical tunes from a
glossy black base station over a 2.4GHz DSSS connection, which
seemed to work fairly well even in the crowded event space -- chock
full of hundreds, perhaps even thousands of wireless devices.
A packed noisy environment isn't the ideal location to conduct
audio tests, but given the conditions, the RS 220 performed well --
Aerosmith's
Love in an Elevator was clear and crisp, with
a reasonable amount of bass. The headphones were quite comfortable
as well -- the velvet-like cups formed a fairly secure fit without
putting too much pressure on our ears, as you might expect given
the sky-high price tag. They're rated for a distance of up to 300
feet, though the connection dropped at just over 50 feet during our
brief test period tonight -- you'll likely see better range
outdoors, however. Jump past the break for a video walkthrough and
the PR from Sennheiser.

Look, codenames are all fine and dandy, but we want the meat
-- we want to know exactly what
Precise Pangolin has in store. Specifics are
still a little hard to come by, but there were some tidbits out of
the Ubuntu Developer Summit. For one,
Canonical has decided to bump the size of the ISO
from 700MB to 750MB. That might not seem like a huge deal, but it
means CDs are out and thumb drives or DVDs are in for installs. The
company is also considering using
Ubuntu
One accounts for logging into the desktop, allowing you to
quickly sync your settings and files on any Ubuntu machine -- not
unlike Google's
Chrome OS. Lastly there are a few software changes
coming. The Software Center will be getting some serious
optimization for quicker launches and better performance, while
Rhythmbox will be returning to the fold after being
banished for Banshee in 11.04. You'll find a few
more details about Ubuntu 12.04 at the source link.

Mozilla's Engineering Project Manager, Christian Legnitto,
has
detailed the release schedule for Firefox 5, 6 and
7. If all goes to plan, Firefox 6.0a1 will be released next
week, April 12, and Firefox 7.0a1 in the middle of May. The final
build of Firefox 5 should be released on June 21, exactly three
months after
the release of Firefox 4.
Along with the faster 6-week release cadence, Firefox's new
Chrome-like release channels have also been given names and
anticipated update frequencies. The most notable change is the
introduction of a new alpha channel -- which is analogous to
Chrome Canary -- that will be called 'aurora' and
will update nightly. Aurora will be where fixes and features are
tested, and either approved for Beta, or backed out to Central.
Aurora will have a new icon, too.
The Nightly (mozilla-central) channel will remain unchanged in name
and frequency, but it will gain a new 'nightly icon.' The Beta
(mozilla-beta) channel will remain as-is, with new builds rolling
out weekly. The Release (mozilla-release) channel will also remain
as-is, with security and stability updates coming every 6 to 12
weeks.
It should be noted that the names (including 'aurora') are not
necessarily final, but it's unlikely that they'll change. We're
also awaiting the arrival of the new 'channel switching'
technology, which should arrive in the next few days -- in time for
the release of
Firefox 6 aurora!
First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May,
and aurora channel introduced originally appeared on Download

Okay, see that snaking line coming in from the right on the
screenshot? That's you. And see those large round circles? Those
are supposedly grapefruits, only they won't sit still - they keep
moving up and down and cutting across your path. And if you touch
one, you die!
That's what you have to deal with in
Line Grapefruit. But that's not all - you're also on
a time limit. In fact, you have a very limited amount of time to
make it through the "path" (for lack of a better word). You need to
snake your way through the winding trail without touching anything.
The good news is that a grapefruit only kills you if it touches the
end of the line - once you've made it past the grapefruit,
nothing happens if it crosses the path you've made.
This is
not an easy game, but it's quite unique - I can't
recall seeing another game quite like it.

We were already expecting to see the WiFi-only version of the
Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus make its
American debut on November 13th, but it may be
worth waiting an extra three days if you'd like to have some good
old-fashioned HSPA+ connectivity on T-Mobile. Indeed, the carrier
announced its 4G-ified iteration of the tablet will be ready for
your purchase on November 16th for a $250 down payment after a
mail-in rebate and with a two-year contract. Oh, and that's not
the only fine print: you'll need to shell out twenty monthly
interest-free payments of $10
in addition to your normal
data plan. To sum up the specs, the seven-inch tablet has Android
3.2 preinstalled, runs on a 1.2GHz Exynos CPU, has 16GB of
internal storage and takes advantage of a 3MP rear-facing camera
and 2MP front-facing cam for video chat. Still intrigued? Read on
through the press release to learn more about your potential Tab
life.

Facebook has announced that its two mobile sites
-- m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com -- have been unified,
bringing a simpler mobile experience to Facebook users. And there
are a lot of those -- a quarter
billion, according
to Facebook.
Smartphone users won't be losing any functionality because of the
consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features
offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip
the switch when you visit.
Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook's
developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead
of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all
mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of
the device they're using.
The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone
supports geolocation. If it doesn't, you won't be seeing much of
Facebook Places -- which obviously relies
heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to
keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. You
can see the three different versions of the share button below,

The
Tablet may have gotten most of the glory at
today's Nook event, but there was plenty of love to go around
across the line. The Color got some solid
multimedia upgrades, courtesy of Hulu Plus,
Pandora, Rhapsody and the like, and the Nook Touch -- now known
as the Nook Simple Touch -- received a few bumps of its own,
beyond that
price drop to $99. The Nook Simple Touch 1.1
software upgrade brings among other things, longer battery life
-- which, for obvious reasons, we can't actually test effectively
at the moment. According to B&N, you should get two months of
battery life reading an hour per day post-upgrade, versus
up
to two months reading half an hour each day pre-upgrade. The
upgrade also promises a crisper display, and holding a pre- and
post-upgrade Nook next to each other, the difference is certainly
detectable. It's not a huge difference, but the slightly darker
text does improve the reading experience, over all.
Also on the list of improvements is a faster turn rate. Indeed,
there is a slight difference, with the updated reader scrolling
through a bit faster (though the two readers did go back and
forth as we had them scroll through a book) -- the upgrade,
according to B&N, will save you a fraction of a second per
page, so don't expect to be wowed on that front. Both readers
have roughly the same refresh rate, doing a full page refresh
every six pages or so. All in all, some welcome changes to a
nicely discounted reader, making the Nook Simple Touch a solid
contender for this holiday. Video of the page turns after the
break.
