When applying for a massage therapy job, should you email your
resume or send it through the standard mail?
Since you are competing against other people for a massage
position, the method you use to submit your resume is your first
opportunity to stand out from the crowd! If you’re like everyone
else who emails their resume without so much as a formal
introduction, you will have a hard time being recognized as
someone who tries harder.Stand Out In The Crowd:
Do this: Use both email and postal mail to your advantage:
1. Send a short introductory email announcing your resume will
come in the mail.
2. Send your resume package by mail.
3. Send a second email confirming their receipt of your
package.Put your best foot forward by putting together a nice
physical package which not only showcases your education and
training, but possibly more important, shows your attention to
detail.Imagine you are the employer:
Imagine how much more impressive and powerful it is to receive a
nicely presented package from an applicant compared to all the
emailed resumes. What would that tell you about the applicant?
(Most of the resumes I receive from therapists are via email, so
when I get a mailed resume package, I seriously consider the
applicant as someone I want to interview, just because they took
the time to send a ‘real’ letter.)When I get a mailed package, it
tells me:
1. They care about the position enough to spend money on
stamps.
2. They took the time to put the package together.
3. It shows me how conscientious the person is.
4. I am actually more likely to actually read it rather than flip
past it in a split second as I’m going through my long list of
email.
5. It allows me to read it at my leisure and if need-be show the
physical piece to a colleague.
6. I can see their choice of material, type of paper used, what
they have included in the package.Your mailed resume package
should consist of a personalized cover letter, (see other
articles on this topic) resume, (possibly a photo), business card
if you have one, and copies of certificates and letters of
recommendations from past employees and clients. You can and
should of course use email to your advantage in tandem with your
mailed resume.Do Your Research:
• Get the email address of the person who will receive the
package.• Send an email to them the day you mail your package
letting them know you are excited about the open position and
mailed your resume to them today.• Let them know to expect it at
such-and-such address within the week and you will follow up with
them in a few days.• Then send them a second email a few days
later (once you think they got it in the mail) to follow up that
they did receive your package.• Most employers will welcome your
follow through rather than see it as being too pushy. Because
business owners are busy people, if an applicant is competent
enough to take these three steps (1. Email #1, 2. Send package,
3. Email #2) for a job, it signifies this person will probably go
all the way once they are hired!• You may be just starting your
career or just changing jobs, but regardless of your actual
hands-on experience, you can beat out other applicants by
presenting a positive first impression!• Think positive, let your
potential employer know exactly why they should interview YOU and
get the job!
