There are three degrees of eczema. These are acute, sub acute and chronic. Acute eczema includes pain, heat and tenderness and possible itching. At the infected area you will see redness and drainage. If the skin is red and crusted over this is considered sub acute. There is usually no extreme swelling at this point.
