"The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference"
Feature
- Autographed by Malcolm Gladwell
"The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference"
Overview
The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or
social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like
wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the
flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion
trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime
rate. This widely acclaimed bestseller, in which Malcolm Gladwell
explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon,
is already changing the way people throughout the world think about
selling products and disseminating ideas.
"The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference"
Specifications
"The best way to understand the dramatic transformation of unknown
books into bestsellers, or the rise of teenage smoking, or the
phenomena of word of mouth or any number of the other mysterious
changes that mark everyday life," writes Malcolm Gladwell, "is to
think of them as epidemics. Ideas and products and messages and
behaviors spread just like viruses do." Although anyone familiar
with the theory of memetics will recognize this concept, Gladwell's
The Tipping Point has quite a few interesting twists on the
subject.
For example, Paul Revere was able to galvanize the forces of
resistance so effectively in part because he was what Gladwell
calls a "Connector": he knew just about everybody, particularly
the revolutionary leaders in each of the towns that he rode
through. But Revere "wasn't just the man with the biggest Rolodex
in colonial Boston," he was also a "Maven" who gathered extensive
information about the British. He knew what was going on and he
knew exactly whom to tell. The phenomenon continues to this
day--think of how often you've received information in an e-mail
message that had been forwarded at least half a dozen times
before reaching you.
Gladwell develops these and other concepts (such as the
"stickiness" of ideas or the effect of population size on
information dispersal) through simple, clear explanations and
entertainingly illustrative anecdotes, such as comparing the
pedagogical methods of Sesame Street and Blue's
Clues, or explaining why it would be even easier to play Six
Degrees of Kevin Bacon with the actor Rod Steiger. Although some
readers may find the transitional passages between chapters hold
their hands a little too tightly, and Gladwell's closing
invocation of the possibilities of social engineering sketchy,
even chilling, The Tipping Point is one of the most
effective books on science for a general audience in ages. It
seems inevitable that "tipping point," like "future shock" or
"chaos theory," will soon become one of those ideas that
everybody knows--or at least knows by name. --Ron
Hogan

"The Federalist Papers" Overview
Paperback edition of the classic Federalist Papers.
"The Federalist Papers" Specifications
"This country and this people seem to have been made for each
other, and it appears as if it was the design of Providence, that
an inheritance so proper and convenient for a band of brethren ...
should never be split into a number of unsocial, jealous, and alien
sovereignties." So wrote John Jay, one of the revolutionary authors
of
The Federalist Papers, arguing that if the United States
was truly to be a single nation, its leaders would have to agree on
universally binding rules of governance--in short, a constitution.
In a brilliant set of essays, Jay and his colleagues Alexander
Hamilton and James Madison explored in minute detail the
implications of establishing a kind of rule that would engage as
many citizens as possible and that would include a system of checks
and balances. Their arguments proved successful in the end, and
The Federalist Papers stand as key documents in the founding
of the United States.

"It's Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional
System Collided With the New Politics of Extremism" Overview
Acrimony and hyperpartisanship have seeped into every part of the
political process. Congress is deadlocked and its approval
ratings are at record lows. America’s two main political parties
have given up their traditions of compromise, endangering our
very system of constitutional democracy. And one of these parties
has taken on the role of insurgent outlier; the Republicans have
become ideologically extreme, scornful of compromise, and
ardently opposed to the established social and economic policy
regime.
In It’s Even Worse Than It Looks, congressional scholars
Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein identify two overriding problems
that have led Congress—and the United States—to the brink of
institutional collapse. The first is the serious mismatch between
our political parties, which have become as vehemently
adversarial as parliamentary parties, and a governing system
that, unlike a parliamentary democracy, makes it extremely
difficult for majorities to act. Second, while both parties
participate in tribal warfare, both sides are not equally
culpable. The political system faces what the authors call
“asymmetric polarization,” with the Republican Party implacably
refusing to allow anything that might help the Democrats
politically, no matter the cost.
With dysfunction rooted in long-term political trends, a
coarsened political culture and a new partisan media, the authors
conclude that there is no “silver bullet” reform that can solve
everything. But they offer a panoply of useful ideas and reforms,
endorsing some solutions, like greater public participation and
institutional restructuring of the House and Senate, while
debunking others, like independent or third-party candidates.
Above all, they call on the media as well as the public at large
to focus on the true causes of dysfunction rather than just
throwing the bums out every election cycle. Until voters learn to
act strategically to reward problem solving and punish
obstruction, American democracy will remain in serious
danger.

"Common Sense (Little Books of Wisdom)" Overview
Paine arrived in America from England in 1774. A friend of Benjamin
Franklin, he was a writer of poetry and tracts condemning the slave
trade. In 1775, as hostilities between Britain and the colonies
intensified, Paine wrote Common Sense to encourage the colonies to
break the British exploitative hold and fight for independence. The
little booklet of 50 pages was published January 10, 1776 and sold
a half-million copies, approximately equal to 75 million copies
today.
"Common Sense (Little Books of Wisdom)" Specifications
"These are the times that try men's souls," begins Thomas Paine's
first Crisis paper, the impassioned pamphlet that helped ignite the
American Revolution. Published in Philadelphia in January of 1776,
Common Sense sold 150,000 copies almost immediately. A
powerful piece of propaganda, it attacked the idea of a hereditary
monarchy, dismissed the chance for reconciliation with England, and
outlined the economic benefits of independence while espousing
equality of rights among citizens. Paine fanned a flame that was
already burning, but many historians argue that his work unified
dissenting voices and persuaded patriots that the American
Revolution was not only necessary, but an epochal step in world
history.

"Wings of Judgment: American Bombing in World War II" Overview
World War II--"the good war"--is here viewed from a new angle of
vision, one that sheds fresh light on how major decisions were
reached.
More than just a book on the strategy and outcome of American
bombing in World War II,
Wings of Judgment tells about
choices in war, decisions that determined whether hundreds of
thousands of people lived or died and whether famous cities and
great monuments of civilization survived or were destroyed. It is
about the bombing of Dresden and Berlin and of dozens of cities and
towns all over Germany and about the preservation of Rome and
Florence. It is about the incineration of Tokyo, the bombing of
Hiroshima, and the sparing of one of Japan's most beautiful and
holy places, the city of Kyoto. Describing U.S. air raids that
terrified inhabitants of enemy nations and citizens of
enemy-occupied countries, it raises serious questions about the
military and moral effects of American bombing. It also tells of
American efforts to avoid killing civilians needlessly.
Taking us behind the scenes at military headquarters, Schaffer
shows that even the toughest warriors occasionally found themselves
offering moral arguments for their actions, arguing that they were
made right by enemy atrocities, by the justness of the Allied
cause, and by the numbers of lives of American servicemen that
Allied bombing might save.

"Means of Ascent: The Years of Lyndon Johnson, Volume 2" Overview
Robert A. Caro's life of Lyndon Johnson, which began with the
greatly acclaimed The Path to Power, also winner of the National
Book Critics Circle Award, continues -- one of the richest, most
intensive and most revealing examinations ever undertaken of an
American President. In Means of Ascent the Pulitzer Prize-winning
biographer/historian, chronicler also of Robert Moses in The Power
Broker, carries Johnson through his service in World War II and the
foundation of his long-concealed fortune and the facts behind the
myths he created about it. But the explosive heart of the book is
Caro's revelation of the true story of the fiercely contested 1948
senatorial election, for forty years shrouded in rumor, which
Johnson had to win or face certain political death, and which he
did win -- by "the 87 votes that changed history." Caro makes us
witness to a momentous turning point in American politics: the
tragic last stand of the old politics versus the new -- the
politics of issue versus the politics of image, mass manipulation,
money and electronic dazzle.
From the Trade Paperback edition.
"Means of Ascent: The Years of Lyndon Johnson, Volume 2"
Specifications
The second installment in a projected four-volume biography of LBJ
that opened with The Path to Power,
Means of Ascent shines a
harsh light on the early political years of one of America's most
paradoxical presidents. The man who would later ram civil rights
legislation through a reluctant Congress, and then be brought down
by Vietnam, came out of a political swamp--Caro gives a graphic
picture of the Texas democratic political machine at its most
corrupt. The climax of the book is LBJ's election to the Senate in
1948, an election he won by 87 dubious votes out of almost a
million. That vote arguably changed history. This book won the 1990
National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography.

"Manhunt: The Ten-Year Search for Bin Laden--from 9/11 to
Abbottabad" Overview
The gripping account of the decade-long hunt for the
world's most wanted man.
It was only a week before 9/11 that Peter Bergen turned in the
manuscript of
Holy War, Inc., the story of Osama bin
Laden--whom Bergen had once interviewed in a mud hut in
Afghanistan--and his declaration of war on America. The book became
a
New York Times bestseller and the essential portrait of
the most formidable terrorist enterprise of our time. Now, in
Manhunt, Bergen picks up the thread with this taut yet
panoramic account of the pursuit and killing of bin Laden.
Here are riveting new details of bin Laden’s flight after the
crushing defeat of the Taliban to Tora Bora, where American forces
came startlingly close to capturing him, and of the fugitive
leader’s attempts to find a secure hiding place. As the only
journalist to gain access to bin Laden’s Abbottabad compound before
the Pakistani government demolished it, Bergen paints a vivid
picture of bin Laden’s grim, Spartan life in hiding and his
struggle to maintain control of al-Qaeda even as American drones
systematically picked off his key lieutenants.
Half a world away, CIA analysts haunted by the intelligence
failures that led to 9/11 and the WMD fiasco pored over the tiniest
of clues before homing in on the man they called "the Kuwaiti"--who
led them to a peculiar building with twelve-foot-high walls and
security cameras less than a mile from a Pakistani military
academy. This was the courier who would unwittingly steer them to
bin Laden, now a prisoner of his own making but still plotting to
devastate the United States.
Bergen takes us inside the Situation Room, where President Obama
considers the COAs (courses of action) presented by his war council
and receives conflicting advice from his top advisors before
deciding to risk the raid that would change history--and then
inside the Joint Special Operations Command, whose "secret
warriors," the SEALs, would execute Operation Neptune Spear. From
the moment two Black Hawks take off from Afghanistan until bin
Laden utters his last words,
Manhunt reads like a
thriller.
Based on exhaustive research and unprecedented access to White
House officials, CIA analysts, Pakistani intelligence, and the
military, this is the definitive account of ten years in pursuit of
bin Laden and of the twilight of al-Qaeda.

"Rainbow Six (Tom Clancy)" Overview
4 cassettes / 6 Hours
Read by David Dukes
(also available on CD)
Tom Clancy's most shocking story to date - and closer to reality
than any government would care to admit.
Over the course of nine novels, Tom Clancy's "genius for big,
compelling plots" and his "natural narrative gift" (
The New York
Times Magazine) have established him as one of the preeminent
storytellers of our time. In his new and most
extraordinary novel,
Rainbow Six, Clancy goes beyond
anything he has done before.
At its heart is John Clark, the ex-Navy SEAL of
Without
Remorse, a master of secret operational missions, and newly
named the head of an international task force dedicated to
combating terrorism. Clark is looking forward to sinking
his teeth into a new mission, but the opportunities start coming
faster than anyone could have expected; an incident at a Swiss
bank, the kidnapping of an international trader in Germany,
a terrible raid on an amusement park in Spain.
Each episode seems separate, yet the timing disturbs
Clark. Is there a connection? He tries to
figure out where all this activity is heading, but there is no way
to predict the real threat: a group of terrorists like none the
world has ever encountered, a group so extreme that their success
could literally mean the end of life on this earth as we know
it.
This is Clancy at his best - and there is none better.
"Rainbow Six (Tom Clancy)" Specifications
No one would have blamed David Dukes if he had declined reading for
Tom Clancy's
Rainbow Six. Not only is "Rainbow" a melting
pot of secret-agent patois, but the 700-page-plus book version runs
at a rampant pace--this despite the usual wealth of Clancy detail.
But actor and audio pro Dukes (and the editor responsible for
condensing the script onto six hours of tape) handles this daunting
task admirably, applying a steady--but not urgent--Everyman's tone
and imparting a sense that we're hearing the
whole story.
Listeners may want more, but will be satiated with this abridged
rendition.
Dukes also bounces seamlessly among dialects, giving distinct but
easy-to-understand voices to Rainbow, a colorful cast of
international good guys assembled to save the world from
terrorism. The group is led by a sometimes violent but
justice-minded ex-CIA agent, John Clark, who is proof that Clancy
can paint a dark protagonist as vividly as his good knight, Jack
Ryan. But Rainbow Six is an equally bright showcase for
reader Dukes, who, like Clark, is bent on providing justice.
Dukes's reading gives justice to the abridged form. (Running
time: six hours, four cassettes) --Rob McDonald

The Communist Manifesto, originally titled Manifesto of the
Communist Party (German: Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei) is a
short 1848 book written by the German Marxist political theorists
Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. It has since been recognized as one
of the world's most influential political manuscripts. Commissioned
by the Communist League, it laid out the League's purposes and
program. It presents an analytical approach to the class struggle
(historical and present) and the problems of capitalism, rather
than a prediction of communism's potential future forms.
The book contains Marx and Engels' Marxist theories about the
nature of society and politics, that in their own words, "The
history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class
struggles." It also briefly features their ideas for how the
capitalist society of the time would eventually be replaced by
socialism, and then eventually communism.

"The Communist Manifesto" Specifications
"A spectre is haunting Europe," Karl Marx and Frederic Engels wrote
in 1848, "the spectre of Communism." This new edition of
The
Communist Manifesto, commemorating the 150th anniversary of its
publication, includes an introduction by renowned historian Eric
Hobsbawm which reminds us of the document's continued relevance.
Marx and Engels's critique of capitalism and its deleterious effect
on all aspects of life, from the increasing rift between the
classes to the destruction of the nuclear family, has proven
remarkably prescient. Their spectre, manifested in the
Manifesto's vivid prose, continues to haunt the capitalist
world, lingering as a ghostly apparition even after the collapse of
those governments which claimed to be enacting its principles.

"Mary's Mosaic: The CIA Conspiracy to Murder John F. Kennedy,
Mary Pinchot Meyer, and Their Vision of World Peace" Overview
“A fascinating story . . . Peter Janney’s unsparing
analysis moves us closer to a reckoning."—Oliver
Stone
Who really murdered Mary Pinchot Meyer in the fall of 1964? Why
was there a mad rush by CIA counterintelligence chief James
Angleton to locate and confiscate her diary? What in that diary was
so explosive? Had Mary Meyer finally put together the intricate
pieces of a plan to assassinate her lover, President Kennedy, with
the trail ultimately leading to the CIA? And was it mere
coincidence that Mary was killed less than three weeks after the
release of the Warren Commission report?
These are the questions that author Peter Janney finally answers in
a way that no one else ever has. In doing so, he may well have
solved Washington’s most famous unsolved murder. Based on years of
painstaking research and interviews, much of it revealed here for
the first time, the author traces the key events and influences in
the life of Mary Pinchot Meyer, including her first meeting with
Jack Kennedy at the Choate School in 1936; her explorations with
psychedelic drugs; her relationship with Timothy Leary; and finally
how she supported the president as he turned away from the Cold War
toward the pursuit of world peace. As we approach the 50th
anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination—and Mary
Meyer’s—
Mary’s Mosaic adds to our understanding of why
both took place.

"Hollywood Hypocrites" Overview
THE BOOK YOU’RE ABOUT TO READ WILL PISS YOU OFF.Are you sick
of self-important celebrities preaching against “global warming,”
yet flying private planes to their countless homes? Fed up with
lectures about charity and philanthropy from miserly rockers who
will do anything for a tax break? Disgusted by leftist stars
decrying the evils of the Second Amendment as their personal
bodyguards pack more heat than a Chuck Norris kick to the face? The
same Hollywood loons who got Barack Hussein Obama elected in 2008
will do so again in 2012. That is, unless we muzzle them. Four
years ago, Republicans sat back like wimps and let Obama’s
celebrity-fueled cool machine steamroll them into electoral
smithereens. This time, we must do the steamrolling.
New York
Times bestselling author of
Obama Zombies and gonzo
journalist Jason Mattera takes the first stand with
Hollywood
Hypocrites, as he slays the Left’s sacred celebrity cows and
teaches Obama’s Tinseltown foot soldiers their most important
lesson yet: No longer can they attempt to deny Americans the very
liberties they use to catapult themselves to prosperity and
stardom. In his trademark eye-opening, no-holds-barred, and
hilarious style, Mattera puts scores of A-list celebrities,
including Sting, Madonna, Bono, Al Gore, Alec Baldwin, Matt Damon,
Cameron Diaz, Bruce Springsteen, and many, many more under the
microscope to analyze whether they live by the same environmental,
health, anti-violence, civil rights, and other policy prescriptions
they seek to inflict on Americans. What he uncovers will shock you.
Hollywood’s megaphone is powerful, and the mainstream media’s love
affair with the president will roar back with a vengeance when
their guy is against the wall. Anyone who thinks Barack Obama’s
abysmal first term will be enough to demoralize the Liberal Left
Coast from flexing its mediated political muscle is a fool. It’s
time to recognize the marketing and fund-raising power the
Hollywood Progressives wield. It’s time to dig into the data and
set the record straight. It’s time to turn the media spotlight back
on the image makers and prevent the Hollywood elite from
hoodwinking American voters once again.
