Men’s Coats – Completing the Look
It’s one of the first things about a man that anyone can notice, so the type of coat someone wears can say a lot about them.
Are you a stylish but practical mac wearer or a Romantic throwback composing poems in a double-breasted coat? Do you prefer the business look with a sophisticated overcoat, or the edgy prominence of a trench coat?
Men’s coats are far from uniform: picking the right one is essential.
Double-Breasted Men’s Coats
Think Napoleon and Wellington. This classic men’s coat has its roots in the smart and sophisticated aesthetic of the military and in the modern day has become synonymous with distinguished and masculine males.
Perfect for the office, the double-breast keeps the jacket tight, making it cosy and warm whilst still looking sleek. Fitting nicely over suits, men’s double-breasted coats have become a timeless classic for all occasions.
The Staple Mackintosh
As iconic as it is practical, the mac first came to British shops in 1824, gaining its name from its Scottish designer, Charles Macintosh. Remaining popular ever since, the mac is an incredibly practical and still decidedly stylish addition to the wardrobe: waterproof coats don’t come better equipped or better looking.
Light as well as waterproof, macs have long been championed by businessmen who need to stay smart – and more importantly, dry – in rainy months. The ultimate water weather protection, the mac has become a fashion all of its own.
For Men’s Coats, Try Trench Coats
Like the mackintosh, the trench coat was designed for practicality, and like the double-breasted coat, has its roots in military aesthetics: it was made for British officers and to be worn in trenches during long warfare.
Even during its first few years the trench coat was associated with sophistication and style: the first trench coats were designed by Burberry and Aquascutum, and only soldiers of officer class status could wear them.
As a fashion item the trench coat developed a long association with detective fiction and war film portrayals. Today they retain that touch of elegance, and remain as useful and impressive as the original designs.
Men’s Overcoats
Designed as a way of protecting other clothing, overcoats been popular for centuries. Usually extending below the knee, they have remained fashionable because their cover means that people can travel from place to place without ruining suits, shirts and trousers.
An instant association with sophistication, a lot would have to go wrong for a simple overcoat not to look stylish. It’s a look that well never go away: perhaps the archetype of men’s coats.

Question by Kiwi is my bird-o: What kind of jacket
to get him for Christmas?
My fiancee has no warm coats, won’t buy one, and then complains
about being cold all winter. So I figured for Christmas this
year, I’d get him a nice warm jacket. He has a bunch of hoodies,
and jackets made of that shiny material he uses to go running in.
But none of them are any kind of warm for below freezing weather.
I’m looking to spend around dollarsignr 250-dollarsignr 300 on one, so a leather one may be an option (I think they may cost more?). But I really can’t think of any other style of warm casual normal looking mens jackets besides leather. He would never wear a big goofy puffer jacket, not does he need a sports coat, his job isn’t formal enough.
Any suggestions on different styles? He is a man, he doesn’t really care much about looking fashionable, and this coat needs to be a timeless look (nothing trendy) so he can wear it for the next several years. He also won’t wear anything that looks too cowboy-ish, nor would I buy him anything that looked cowboy-ish, yuck. We live in pretty much the middle of the boonies, and I am going down to the nearest big city (Phoenix, Az if you have store recommendations) in a few weeks to do holiday shopping, so I’d need to get it then (I don’t shop online). Help?
And yes we do live in Arizona, up in the mountains (Presccott), and it does stay below feezing al winter long here. Not all of AZ is desert.

Sanyo Fashion House today announced the addition of two coats, the Hemlock and the Juniper, to their ‘In-Stock’ program, beginning with the Fall 2010 season. The Sanyo In-Stock program is a collection of best-selling coats that is available all season or all year long, depending upon the particular style.
Until now, all of the In-Stock coats were 34” or greater in length. The Hemlock, at 30”, represents a first for the collection. Made of 60% Cotton and 40% Nylon, it’s the first exclusively casual jacket in the line. The Hemlock features a dual zipper and snap closure fly front and a stand-up collar with single snap closure. Details include inset sleeves, two outer shirt pockets, two outer deep pockets, icon button closures on the four inner pockets, and a plaid inner lining.
The 34” Juniper is made of 100% Micro Polyester. Its fly front contains both zipper and button closures, both running down only 3/4 of the coat length for maximum freedom of movement. Its luxurious design consists of two layers which perform seamlessly as one but may also be separated to create two individual pieces of men’s outerwear, both of which are fully functional on their own. For this reason, it’s often referred to as a ‘3-in-1’ coat. Details include a single visible button at the base of the neck, fully inset sleeves, a double-stand collar, four inner pockets with icon button closures, and a plaid inner lining.
“The Hemlock and Juniper coats are a perfect fit in terms of rounding out our In-Stock program,” said Chris Champlin, Sanyo’s Vice President of Sales. “While the Hemlock breaks entirely new ground as the line’s first shorter-length casual* jacket, the Juniper greatly increases the availability of the very popular 3-in-1 style.”
Availability:
The Hemlock and Juniper coats are now available on the Sanyo web site (http://www.sanyofashionhouse.com), at various retail partners, or by calling 1-800-99-SANYO (between the hours of 9:00am-5:00pm EST).
Try one on and see why the Hemlock and Juniper are everything you’ve come to expect from Sanyo. And more.
