So, what's the difference?
The root of the word "hypnosis" is a Greek word meaning
"sleep". In hypnotherapy, the practitioner induces a state
where the subject is less conscious than full waking, but not
completely asleep, in order to bring forward repressed
memories, or introduce positive suggestions. It's called a
"trance state".
The practice of guided imagery relies on inducing a trance
state as well, in order to reach past the intellect and engage
the imagination. Guided imagery can be used for exactly the
same purposes as hypnosis, as well as for bringing forward
creativity through the imagination, exploring inner feelings,
or tapping into higher states of awareness. But then, a
hypnotherapist can do those things as well.
A guided meditation also uses an induction process, like
hypnotherapy or guided imagery, and typically takes the
listener on an inner journey to still the mind, experience
peace and tranquility, get in touch with spiritual figures,
tapping higher states of awareness, exploring inner feelings...
Is this starting to sound familiar? If it is, that's because
basically, all three are exactly the same!
The main difference is what the person leading the process
chooses to call it. In general, hypnotherapists do
"hypnotherapy", psychotherapists do "hypnotherapy"
or "guided imagery", and spiritual teachers, spiritual coaches,
and everyone else does "guided meditations". Potato potato.
Personally, I prefer potatoes.
What about recordings? There's a long history of hypnosis
recordings going back to "tapes", for curing everything from
warts to shyness. Guided imagery and guided
meditation recordings go back almost as far.
But there is something to be said for doing guided
imagery/hypnosis/guided meditation with a therapist who can
work with you in real time, one on one. By watching you
carefully during the process and soliciting feedback as you
proceed, your therapist can taylor the experience to your
responses, determine the most productive directions as things
unfold, and take you deeper into areas that seem to hold more
for you. Working in this way takes practice and training, and
it's a skill that is best developed with professional
supervision over time.
There are hypnosis, guided imagery, and guided meditation
recordings on the market for just about everything you can
think of, and the more popular themes (weight loss!) have
hundreds if not thousands of listings available. The quality is
all over the map, though. So if you've tried recordings and
haven't connected with them, don't give up without sampling
those from other authors. Just about anyone can make a
recording, but it takes a lot of work to make a great one, and
not everyone is up to the task.
No matter what you call them, some of the most popular programs
available are online at The Healing Waterfall, where you can
download a free guided
meditation by Laura Downall.

Framing is the context in which people use to attribute meaning to
the information they receive. Everyone has a unique way in which he
looks at things and is different from another person's perspective.
People might see the package of information positive while others
will see the same set of information in a neutral way and still,
others will see it in a negative way. It's all about perception. In
hypnosis techniques, framing is being used for trance inducing
almost all the time. A successful hypnotizer is able to change
somebody's frames without him noticing the fact and create positive
attitude towards hypnosis or his own goals in few sentences. The
most popular example is the glass is half-empty vs. the glass is
half-full. The hypnotist simply takes his clients information and
attributes a new meaning to it. Reframing is used in different
contexts in our daily lives. It is preferred by public relation
agencies because they realize that it's such a powerful tool.
Debates between political parties use reframing in attempts to
convince the public to follow them.
Reframing is thus a foundation for conversational hypnosis and
street hypnosis. Reframing is of two forms which are context and
meaning reframing. When using reframing as a technique of
successful trance induction, a hypnotist tries to make someone look
at a simple situation from a different point of view. A good
example of context reframing is when a person decides to buy
tickets to go to the movies but he is undecided on which movie to
go for. In this context, you can use your reframing skills to make
him change his mind and convince him to watch a movie that he
doesn't even like. For instance, you can make him watch horror
movies which he doesn't like. You can convince him that horror
movies help drive out fear and become braver. This way, you present
horror movies in a new positive context as opposed to his negative
view of horrors. You present horror movies as something that can
help him make some positive changes in his life rather than
instilling fear in him. This is referred to as context framing.
As opposed to context framing, meaning framing help change the
meaning of the actual frame. In the above scenario, the original
frame was that horror movies are bad. Changing the frame may
require you to change the actual meaning of frame. You can convince
your friend that what he saw was only the bad horror films so what
he reviews as a bad horrors is essentially a small percentage of
horror movies otherwise horror movies are good. Convince him that
they include some good masterpieces like the film you have chosen
for him to watch. Once again you have succeeded in changing the
frame to a positive one.
Generally, reframing is used mainly in inducing hypnotic trance and
for making people look at a certain idea from different
perspectives.
Hypnosis
can change the way we see things. Some of the hypnosis techniques
are designed to gain positive attitude towards different events in
life and if they are successfully implemented, they can reframe
view points and way of thinking in a positive way. The hypnotist
can use innovative
hypnosis techniques and motivate the subject to gain
different perspectives throughout his life which can make
significant difference in the future life of the subject.

Smoking is a psychological issue wherein the mind commands the
physical state to crave for nicotine, the addictive content of
cigarettes. In order to drop the habit, it is therefore necessary
that you deal with the problem as a psychological issue. Since the
smoking problem begins in the mind, it follows that manipulating
the mind will help the smoker quit the habit. This is precisely
what hypnosis does.
In the hypnosis sessions, the mind is manipulated by willing it to
go into a relaxed state or trance. The deeper the trance, the more
effective hypnosis works in changing such bad habits as smoking.
While in a trance, the hypnotized person becomes open to
suggestions toward changing his outlook in life. New beliefs and
ideas are repeatedly insinuated into the person's minds that
replace the old, negative ones.
The reason why hypnosis works in making us drop bad habits in favor
of good practices is that our attention level and sense of right
and wrong are believed to be at their sharpest when we are placed
under a hypnotic trance. When the
hypnotized smoker is asked to quit smoking, that
person is expected to heed the suggestion.
Mind Conditioning
A smoker who wants to quit is usually advised by a hypnotherapist
to envision a future scenario in which there is no cigarette in is
his hand. The smoker will be encouraged to firm up his resolve that
he can quit cold turkey. The hypnotherapist will pound into the
smoker's mind that it is for his and general well-being if he drops
the habit. This is called mind conditioning which, when done
repeatedly, always yields positive results.
I say repeatedly because you need more than one session for
hypnosis to be of any effect. The number of sessions depends on how
well the person undergoing hypnotherapy responds to the initial
therapies. For good measure, the smoker is also asked to listen to
recordings that discuss the evils of smoking. Reinforcement of the
initial suggestion is the purpose of all these.
Withdrawal Symptoms
Smokers who decide to quit on their own often experience the
so-called withdrawal symptoms which make the effort to quit
difficult. When tobacco dependence develops and its use is abruptly
discontinued, symptoms of withdrawal will arise. Among the common
withdrawal symptoms are sleepiness or insomnia, increased anxiety,
nausea and even diarrhea.
When the smoker is placed under a trance, the hypnotherapist is
likely to explain that withdrawal symptoms happen because of the
conscious belief that smoking is a habit you cannot give up easily.
The mind of the smoker is then conditioned that this is not so and
that the bad habit can be licked without any negative reaction from
the body - if the person wills it.
The hypnotherapist then introduces a new set of responses that
gives the smoker confidence that he can give up without anything
happening to his body. The hypnotherapist may tell the smoker to
take three deep breaths and drink a glass of water to suppress an
urge to smoke.
The hypnotherapist will instruct your subconscious to equate
smoking with something unpleasant or painful. Hypnosis works on the
subconscious levels of our thoughts.

According to one source, hypnosis in the west was derived from
the practices of Asian shamans brought West by Jesuit
missionaries. However, ancient Celtic priests already claimed
to possess a skill called "glamour" which meant to dazzle
another's mind, often with only words.
The man credited with discovering hypnosis in the West is
Marquis DePuysegur, a disciple of Dr. Franz Mesmer (1733-1851).
From his studies of primitive shamanistic trances, Mesmer
developed "animal Magnetism," an early form of hypnotism.
DePuysegur carried on mesmer's research and during one session
he observed one of his patients entering a trance-like state of
true hypnotism.
By the mid-1800's, DePuysegur's hypnotism (a.k.a "magnetic
sleep") was being used to relieve patients pain during
operations in London. After observing patients reactions while
in magnetic sleep Sigmund Freud formulated his theory of the
unconscious mind.
In 1852, Researcher James Braid coined the term "hypnosis."
Since the, hypnotism has been used to heal and to entertain.
Hypnotism has also been used by mind-slayers for dark purposes.
Whether you know it or not, you've been in a hypnotic state
literally thousands of times. Anytime you've been caught
daydreaming or being absent-minded, you've been under a form of
hypnosis. Ninety percent of people can be deliberately
hypnotized to some degree and of that number, fully 10 percent
are highly suggestible and thus susceptible to being in deep
levels of trance.
How does hypnotism work? We still don't know. We do know,
however, that effective hypnotism depends on the power of
suggestion.
The term absent-minded is appropriate since during hypnosis our
usual controlling conscious "higher" mind is temporarily absent
or asleep, while our "lower" subconscious "shadow mind"
(responsible for emotion and motor control) is still awake.
Under hypnosis, our brains go to sleep while our lower brains,
accustomed to being given commands by our higher brains,
continue to take orders from the hypnotist. Thus, under
hypnosis, this lower brain simply substitutes the outside
commands of the hypnotist for the commands of its sleeping
higher brain.
Three things make this hypnosis possible:
First, the subjects focus is narrowed to the point where only a
single source of information is coming into the subjects brain,
information controlled by the hypnotist. The hypnotist the
literally defines reality for the victims subconscious mind.
Second, it is important the subject believe in the process of
hypnosis and in the hypnotist.
Finally, for hypnotism to be successful the subject must be
willing to suspend logic and temporarily accept distortions in
cause and effect, and in his perception of time and space.

Many people in the United States are finding various ways, which
can help them to quit smoking. People who want to stop smoking will
be delighted to know that smoking can be stopped effectively with
the help of hypnotherapy. However, there are also mandatory
requirements that a person needs to furnish for successful
long-term smoking cessation. These requirements include a solid
commitment. Without a commitment nothing will work and it will
spoil your endeavor towards this noble cause.
A dedicated commitment coupled with hypnotherapy always works
wonders for the person who wants to quit smoking.
Hypnotherapy is a therapy, which is undertaken with the person in
hypnosis and is frequently applied in order to modify the
person's behavior, attitude and emotional content as well as
comprehensive conditions such as dysfunctional habits,
stress-related illness, pain management, anxiety and personal
development.
In hypnotherapy, the person who wants to quit smoking is
disconnected from the real emotions and sensations. During
hypnotherapy, the person is fully alert and attentive, but the
mind is conditioned to follow what is suggested. These
suggestions are nothing but dissuasions to the urges that tempt
the person to light a cigarette.
Hypnotherapy also teaches the person to establish a strong
motivation to forsake the vice. It also tells the person about
the dangers of smoking and the advantages they will gain if they
quit smoking.
Hypnotherapy also programs the person's brain by
repeating suggestions to quit smoking, which helps the person
get over the addiction. The brain takes the suggestions and uses
it as the person's normal behavior. As all these suggestions are
positive and work towards overcoming the habit of smoking, the
person forsakes the idea of smoking and becomes a non-smoker.
Furthermore, hypnotherapy also has sessions that cover
psychological manipulation. In this, the person who wants to quit
smoking is made to realize the positive perceptions, and this
involves strategies, which help to avoid the ambushing attacks of
relapses. The main thing about hypnotherapy is no matter for how
long the person has of smoked, hypnotherapy helps to overcome the
habit of smoking.
It is estimated that a person undergoing hypnotherapy for the
first time has a 25% chance of quitting the habit. This success
rate increases and reaches up to 66% if the person undergoes
multiple hypnosis sessions. The side effects of hypnotherapy are
also very mild as compared to other quit smoking therapies and
can be overcome quickly by discontinuing the process of
induction. At times a person may fell dizzy and may even develop
various degrees of nausea at the time of induction.

Quitting smoking is no joke! It is a real challenge and a very
hard thing to do especially if you have been smoking for long
enough. If you have been smoking for quite a long time now and
you want to quit it, hypnosis can help. Smoking in general is
very hazardous to health and planning to get rid of it is the
wisest decision you will ever make. The fact that smoking can
cause a wide range of deadly diseases and one is cancer, it is
just sensible to quit smoking. While there are lots of methods
that aim to help people quit smoking like nicotine lozenges,
chewing gum, counselling, patches and other cessation methods,
one significant alternative is hypnosis or
hypnotherapy.
Hypnotherapy is proven to help kick the bad habit and empower
patients to completely quit smoking. In general, hypnosis is
defined as an altered state of awareness by which the
individual is brought under a trance or a sleep state. Clinical
hypnosis is done to treat certain psychological or physical
problems such as pain, weight issues, bad habits, behaviours,
fear, anxety, phobia, speech disorders, insomnia, addiction
problems and more. There have been many arguments about the
effectiveness of hypnosis; some people are still sceptical
about it, thinking that it is some kind of spell of magic. But
if one only knows the truth about hypnosis and how it can help
alleviate such conditions, they sure will embrace it.
One significant benefit of hypnosis or hypnotherapy is the
ability to help smokers to quit their bad habits of smoking and
live a healthier life. During hypnosis for smoking cessation,
the hypnotist often asks the patient to imagine the unpleasant
outcomes of smoking. He will be brought in some kind of a
relaxed state and will give suggestion to the patient like for
example, cigarette smoke smells like truck or smoking will
leave the patient totally ill because of its effects. Depending
on the hypnotists, he or she will conduct effective smoking
cessation methods like letting the patient think that smoking
poisons the body, that you need your body to live and that you
must respect your body and protect it. Every time and any time
that the smoker feels or desire to smoke, the hypnotist will
teach the patient self-hypnosis wherein he or she will ask
himself or herself these affirmations.
While it is true that hypnosis is effective in ceasing smoking
habits, but it does not work for everyone. About one in four
people cannot be hypnotized and in terms of results, it may
vary because not all patients are the same, each is unique. But
when the procedure is successful, the impact of hypnosis is
very beneficial. Hypnotists help smokers achieve their goal of
quitting the habit on a regular basis and forever. The great
thing about this procedure is that patients are empowered to
quit smoking by using their imagination and creating a
smoke-free future. After a series of hypnosis cessation
session, patients felt very positive and stopping smoking
becomes their very best choice.
