Pastor Maldonado looks set to start the Monaco Grand Prix from the back of the grid, with his Williams team planning to change his gearbox before the race. The Venezuelan, who won from pole position in Spain a fortnight ago, had been scheduled to start 19th on the grid due in part to a 10-place grid penalty he was given for causing a collision with Sergio Perez in final free practice. But following examination of his car by Williams after qualifying, it was found that there was a problem with his gearbox - perhaps as the result of a crash in final practice ? that means he will face a further five place drop.

The 70s were a definitive decade for music and movies. Fashion and cars, not so much. The 80s corrected one of those oversights, an era of ethereal supercars like the Porsche 959, game-changing exotics like the Ferrari Testarossa, and, best of all, everday cannons that offered mortals a generous portion of lairy thrills, such as Chris Harris' 1986 e28 BMW M5.
In 1986, a 3,100-pound, 286-horsepower luxury sedan straight from the factory that could also handle was as rare as a goose with lips. Sure, there was a more powerful AMG Mercedes-Benz E-Class but it didn't want to get into a lengthy conversation about handling, and there was the AMG Hammer, but that was a terrifically expensive tuner special. The M5 weighed the same as the 1986 Chevrolet Corvette and had 225-section rear tires just like the 'Vette, but the M5 had 36 more horsepower. And it had four, leather-covered seats. And it could corner.
All of which has to do with why Drive's Chris Harris spends eight minutes explaining, and showing, why he loves his personal M5 so much. Scroll down to learn about the sedan that compels him to say "it's the best money I've ever spent on a car."

Aaro Vainio claimed his first ever GP3 Series pole position in an early Friday morning qualifying for the series' maiden Monaco race. Like GP2, GP3 split its field into two groups for Monte Carlo qualifying, with the group with the faster pacesetter taking the pole position side of the grid. Lotus driver Vainio led the way in the second segment and went quickly enough to take pole from group one leader Kevin Ceccon (Ocean), as the Auto GP champion put the tough start to his GP3 career at Barcelona behind him and earned a front row start.

Ferrari could be a contender for pole position in Monaco because the characteristics of the circuit play into the strengths of the F2012, according to technical boss Pat Fry. Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso set the third and fourth fastest times of the opening day of practice in Monaco and although Fry believes that it will be a close battle at the front, he is hopeful that the slow circuit will help his drivers. "Here is a little bit of a different track," said Fry.
