To understand what reverse osmosis system is, it would be better to start defining what osmosis is. According to Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, osmosis means the movement of a solvent through a semi permeable membrane into a solution of higher solute concentration that tends to equalize the concentrations of two sides of the membrane.

Reverse Osmosis on the other hand is a filtration method that will remove unwanted ions and molecules from a solution through applying pressure to the solution. Reverse osmosis is commonly known for its use in water purification from seawater, to remove the salt and other substances from the water molecules. This is where the osmosis process takes place where the solvent moves from a low solute concentration area to a high solute concentration area through a membrane. Thus reverse osmosis means the application of  an external pressure to reverse the natural flow of pure solvent.


The process actually is somewhat similar to filtration. However the chief differences between osmosis and filtration are that filtration removes particles in water molecules through straining. So the process itself achieves exclusion of particles regardless of pressure and concentration. Reverse osmosis separation efficiency depends on solute concentration, water influx rate and pressure.
Osmosis details how a solvent moves between two solutions that are separated by a semi permeable membrane to reduce differences in concentration between the two solutions. This semi permeable membrane does not allow the solute to move from one compartment to another, but will only allow the solvent to move from areas of low solute concentration to areas of high solute concentration to achieve equilibrium. When the solvent moves away from low concentration areas, this causes the area to become more concentrated. On the other side areas with high solute concentration will decrease.  This processed is then called osmosis. Osmosis is an example of diffusion process.
In reverse osmosis system, with similar setup as that in osmosis, pressure is then applied to compartment with high solute concentration. In this process two influencing movements of water are applied: the pressure caused by the differences in solute concentration and the external pressure applied.
