Help! My grandson has a report due this Friday on St. Christopher & we do not understand the following...?

We need to know what this means... "He bound himself successively to a mighty king & to Satan, but he found both lacking in courage, the former dreading even the name of the devil, & the latter frightened by the sight of a cross at the roadside." I understand that my grandsons teacher used the Catholic Encyclopedia on CD rom. We are not Catholic but our grandchildren attend a Catholic school so we are sort of in the dark at this time. Anyone who can offer assistance at this point it would be greatly appreciated by a nine year old boy! Thank you!
