William Hill, which is the official betting partner of the FA, will hand out 200,000 bet certificates worth £5 and at odds of 1,000-1 to parents as it seeks to take advantage of the hype ahead of Euro 2012.
To qualify for the free bet, customers have to place a £10 football bet in-shop or online and then visit a “play for England” microsite (www.williamhill.com/playforengland) to customise their free £5 bet certificate.
Former England goalkeeper Chris Kirkland and his father Eddie are backing the campaign, having won a similar bet themselves.
Eddie Kirkland placed a £100 bet with William Hill at odds of 100-1 when his son was 12 that he would one day play for England.
He collected his £10,000 winnings when Chris made his debut for England against Greece at Old Trafford in 2006.
At the time the bet had to be placed by writing a letter to the bookmaker, which was accepted by William Hill in writing.
Tony Kenny, William Hill spokesman, said: “Chris and Eddie are living proof that bets like this come off, but we are keen to see future England talent nurtured.
“It is a novelty bet with a serious side and that is that we should all be backing England going forward in the future.”

Don’t mistake Free Radio with Free Planet Radio — those a two very different local bands. Free Planet Radio is world music; Free Radio is hip-hop. In fact, it’s the same hip-hop crew with a decade-long history in Asheville. You probably know them by their previous name, The Ville Boyz.
Aka, this year’s runner up in the best of WNC hip-hop category, as voted by Xpress readers.
Aka, the band who’s played sol-out shows at Christmas Jam and opened for Ice Cube at the Orange Peel.
Aka, the musicians who insist, via Facebook, “You ain’t gotta rap about all that predictable, generic ass garbage!” To prove that point, their frantic-yet-soulful track Apocalyptic Skies, with guitarist Jeremy Indelicato, contemplates the end of the human race. The bass of music is moody, smooth, ebbing and flowing under the acrobatic poetry that seems to leap and fly from the tongues of the vocalists. There’s also a brilliantly-places false ending and precise knitting of voices and rap styles, resulting in a dark tapestry of philosophy and beats that would be danceable if the subject matter wasn’t so thoughtfully phrased and contemplative.
Want to hear more from Free Radio? The band is set to release its first album (under its new name), The Powers That Be. That launch party is set for Saturday, June 2 at Emerald Lounge. 9 p.m., $10.

French breakfast radishes grown in compost
When I moved to my home here in Baristaville almost three years ago, my backyard was a wasteland of weeds and trees surrounded by a chain-link fence. It was home to not one flower but only vagabond families of banjo pickin’ raccoons who would laugh and carry on tipping my garbage cans over every night, leaving a hilly-billy mess all over my driveway. During my quiet desperation to transform this mass of weeds into a garden, I found myself listening to Mike McGrath on “You Bet Your Garden” while he explained that hauling away leaves to the curb was like throwing away gold for your garden.
So basically I could save myself the back breaking work of bagging 8,000 leaves by creating a compost pile. Where do I sign? This was my kind of Kool-Aid.
Starting a compost pile can be as easy as just throwing yard waste into a pile and letting it decompose (cold composting) — or as the brilliant Pat Kenschaft said, “Compost will happen.” You can also hot compost by getting one of those clever black plastic tumblers or store bought bins. My first compost pile was a simply a surround of turkey wire we threw our leaves grass clippings etc. into and turned with a pitchfork every so often. Since starting I have lived and learned you can get all science crazy and wonky with this, but it is really hard to mess up compost. What is the worst thing that can happen? You end up with a pile of dirt.

Super Basic Composting Tips:
Don’ts
Do’s
Slow or Cold composting may take up to 1-2 years to break down, and if you have the space and are in no hurry to use your brown gold this may be the method for you.
Hot composting is more work but will yield results faster. I try to follow the simple steps from compostmania.com but I do not use a thermometer. In the summer when we turn the compost the heat and steam of our cooking compost is good enough for me. Remember water and air are key in the process to hot composting.
Starting your compost in the fall may be the easiest with an abundance of leaves to work with. Of course starting now — particularly while you are out in the garden noticing that your soil really needs some help — may be the motivation you need.
My garden 3 years later
Three years after starting our first pile, I top dressed the raised beds. I installed a section at a time, as the compost became ready. I admit to jumping the gun and top dressing before the compost had fully cooked and because of this I get little seedlings such as tomatoes and pumpkins I call “bonus plants”.
Last August when most of my garden looked pathetic after the odd summer weather, the impatiens growing in the bed I had top dressed with compost in the spring were thriving and twice as big as their other little friends around my yard. My one small victory for the summer.
Now if your soil needs a boost and you don’t have a compost pile, I have had very good results mixing two parts of bagged humus to one part bagged treated manure (available at garden centers) and top dressing depleted beds with this mix. Also known as “Crap and Garbanzos”, no wait that is hummus not humus.
Many towns offer compost bins for half the retail price . In the fall, residents can go pick up compost made with the leaves and grass clippings that are picked up curbside in the summer and fall.

HYDERABAD: Hours before Y S Jaganmohan Reddy stepped out of Dilkusha Guest House on Saturday evening, city punters had already predicted that he would not be arrested. The heavy betting that went on through the day had the odds heavily in favour of Jagan walking out a free man on the second day of grilling by the CBI. But punters stand to live off the Jagan saga for another day as he goes for his third day of interrogation on Sunday.
Bookies said Jagan is the unusual flavor of betting season, which is otherwise dominated by IPL, that has its final match slated for Sunday. They said that there was much speculation of his arrest on Friday and many people lost thousands of rupees, certain that Jagan had landed in the CBI net. But there were more who had bet on him walking free.
The going rate on Friday for his arrest was Rs 1.20 as against Rs 80 paise for him walking free. And as soon as he stepped out of the guest house at 6.35 pm on Friday, those who had bet on the ‘imminent’ arrest lost all their money as Jagan waved at the media cameras. However, on Saturday, the rates for his arrest dropped a little, showing a tad uncertainty in the punter’s mind over the outcome of the CBI interrogation. So, the rate for his arrest on Saturday was Rs 1.10 as against an optimistic 75 paise for his walking out free once again.
Betting draws politicians, party workers
“Today, the bets are at 80 paise for him not getting arrested. This means that betters will earn Rs 1.80 if he doesn’t get arrested,” a punter said.
By Saturday evening, after Jagan came out, there was frenzied betting on whether or not he would be taken into custody on Sunday (which is a holiday) or whether that would happen, if at all, only on Monday. Betting hotbeds included Bowenpally, Begum Bazaar and many areas on the outskirts of the city.
The betting started much before Jagan had entered Dilkusha Guest House for grilling by the CBI on Friday but intensified as soon as he stepped inside. Sources said that betting rates fluctuated throughout the day on Friday and also on Saturday.
Bookies pointed out that unlike betting on IPL matches, which has many city youngsters engaged, this has more politicians and lower-rung party leaders busy.
There is much betting going on even in the districts. Not only was the arrest being second guessed by punters but even minor details like its timing – whether he would be arrested before 6.30pm or later, whether there would be another day of questioning – were hot betting subjects these two days.
“People are all set to bet on the odds of Jagan being taken into custody on Saturday or on May 28 when he has been asked to present himself before the CBI court,” said a punter. Punters look all set to be busy taking bets on Jagan in the coming days with gamblers gearing up for the next phase.
“Bets pertaining to his party’s performance in the byelections are already in place. Punters are betting on either one of the two: that YSR Congress will either win less than 12 out of the 18 seats or more than 14 seats. There is a lot of excitement,” said a bookie.

The Hurricanes have thrashed the Melbourne Rebels by a franchise-record 66-24 in their Super Rugby clash in Wellington to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The Hurricanes were deadly on turnover ball, scoring five tries to two before half-time when they led 38-17 and the hosts ran in four more tries, with left wing Julian Savea bagging a hat-trick.
Both team’s goalkickers were 100 percent accurate.
The Auckland-born wing Cooper Vuna opened the scoring early on for the Rebels and the try was converted by Kurtley Beale.
Beauden Barrett traded penalties with his opposite Beale, before Andre Taylor finished off a nice burst by halfback TJ Perenara to put the Hurricanes level at 10-10 once Barrett converted the difficult sideline conversion.
Alapati Leua showed good handling to score the Hurricanes’ second as the floodgates opened, opposite wing Savea finishing on the left after a scrum turnover.
Savea did it again shortly afterwards as the hosts banked the four-try bonus point before the half-hour mark.
Vuna notched a double with an intercept to make the score a little closer but flanker Jack Lam scored a fifth Hurricanes try just before half-time and Leua notched his second to put the result beyond doubt.
Not to outdone, Savea scored his hat-trick off an Andre Taylor pass before Taylor scored his own try and the Hurricanes’ eighth to make it 58-17 with more than 20 minutes remaining.
Replacement halfback Chris Eaton bagged a ninth for the hosts from a five-metre scrum while the Rebels finally scored again right at the death through hooker Adam Freier.

Andy Murray: Long odds for French Open
Sky Bet are offering little hope of Andy Murray at Roland Garros, pushing him out from 16/1 to 33/1 after the Scot was handed a tough French Open draw.
The world number four’s preparations for the season’s second major have been far from ideal, with a failure to make a single semi-final appearance on clay combined with a niggling back problem.
His chances of improving on last season’s semi-final appearance in Paris have hardly been helped by Friday’s draw, with David Ferrer in his path at the quarter-finals and then Rafael Nadal likely to be waiting in the semis.
The ‘King of Clay’ Nadal has been cut from 4/5 to 4/7 to claim his seventh title in the French capital with world number eight Janko Tipsaravic the highest ranked player in his quarter.
Who are you backing to triumph at Roland Garros? Bet on the French Open here.
World number one Novak Djokovic has been nudged out from 2/1 to 9/4 after being drawn in the same half as Roger Federer, having been as short as 6/4 prior to his Rome Masters defeat at the hands of Nadal.
Federer’s odds have also gone out from 8/1 to 9/1 due to a difficult draw, with Juan Martin del Potro (33/1) and Tomas Berdych (40/1) both in the 16-time Grand Slam winner’s quarter.
In the women’s event, Serena Williams heads the betting at 5/2 ahead of world number one Victoria Azarenka (100/30), Maria Sharapova (7/1) and holder Li Na (11/1).
Of Murray’s chances, Sky Bet’s Ned Brooker said: “Murray’s chances already looked fairly bleak given his poor form and niggling back problem and, with Ferrer and Nadal in his path to the final, it’s going to be extremely tough for him to better last year’s effort.”In fact, we don’t even make the Scot favourite from his quarter with Ferrer the 6/5 favourite to make the semis from the third quarter.
“However, having reached all four Grand Slam semi-finals last year, Murray certainly has the ability to upset the odds and is sure to be backed at such a long price.”

Welcome to the latest Happy Hour mailbag! You know how these work: You write us with your best rant/ joke/one-liner at happyhournascar@yahoogroups.com or on Twitter at @jaybusbee, we respond to your messages, everyone goes away with a smile on their face.
We’ve got the greatest day of the motorsports year coming up this Sunday. Combine that with the unofficial kickoff to summer, and you’ve got one hell of a good reason why it’s a very good thing there’s no work on Monday. You listening, NFL? This is how you do a celebration. Make Super Bowl Monday a holiday and then we’ll talk. Till then, we have Racing Sunday and then a blessed day to recover.
To your letters, starting with the issue of Jimmie Johnson sandbagging:
If Dale Earnhardt Jr. had won the All Star race, everyone would be saying it was the greatest race format ever! Be thankful Jimmie Johnson did sandbag, or he probably would have won all 4 segments. [Those complaining about Johnson's win are] the same bunch of whiners that couldn’t appreciate JJ winning 5 in a row. I personally thought it was impressive to see a team come out with a strategy execute it to perfection. No matter how you tweak the length of segments or pit stops, no one was outrunning the 48 Saturday night! Get over it!
— Jeff
Collinsville, Ill.
Do you think 20 years from now they’ll still be talking about “fireworks” and “no holds barred” and “tempers flaring” and great All-Star race memories and show replays of Kyle Petty and Davey Allison followed by Earnhardt and Elliot? NASCAR is living in the past, especially when it comes to the All-Star race. The meatball nostalgic fan thinks that even in this current format that Dale Earnhardt or Rusty Wallace or Bill Elliott would’ve tried to win all 4 segments anyway and then run away in the 10-lap shootout.
— Eric
Chicago
First off, let’s lay this out there: yes, Jimmie Johnson sandbagged the last three segments of the All-Star Race. There’s no other way to put it. Good strategy? Absolutely. Crap racing? Also, absolutely. But Eric makes an excellent point: Johnson did exactly what the wise drivers of earlier days would have done before him: used the rules to his own advantage. Do I have a problem with that? Aesthetically yes, competitively no. You do what you do to win, and it doesn’t matter if you don’t look pretty doing it.
Longtime readers of this column know I don’t have a whole lot of patience for some of the Sacred Whines of the NASCAR faithful (“It was better back then,” “Jimmie is a cheater,” etc.) Those of you displeased with the All-Star race, which would be everyone who’s not a 48 fan, unfortunately need to accept that Johnson gamed the system to his own advantage, and did so in a perfectly legitimate fashion, like it or not.
BUT! Let’s not end this conversation there. No, you folks stuffed my inbox with dozens of suggestions for how to fix this silly race, so let’s run down a few:
____________________
• NASCAR needs to move the All-Star race. How about a stand-alone race every year at someplace like…Rockingham? (Randy Black/extavernmouse, Portland, Ore.)
• 1) Invert the field after each segment. 2) Run the race in two 30-lap segments and a final 30-lap shoot-out. 3) Use something like the old points system in each of the first two segments to set the field for the last 30-lap shoot-out and award 10 points extra for winning a segment. (Dave D., Stoughton, Wisc.)
• Four 25-lap segments, winner of each segment wins bonus money, mandatory four-tire pit stops after each segment, start with 25 cars, bottom 5 cars of each segment go home. Final segment would be a 10-car, 25 lap shootout with fresh rubber. (Gus, Naperville, Ill.)
• Make it mandatory to change 4 tires during the (last) stop and really pressure the pit crews. (Mark Zahn, Atlanta)
• Five 20-lap segments. Winners of each of the first four get $25,000. During those runs no pit stops until the mandatory caution. Only green flag laps count. During those four mandatory cautions, all cars must make a four tire pit stop. Give a $25,000 prize to the crew who has the fastest stop for that segment. Line them up as they come off pit road. For the last 20 laps, line them up as they come out of the pits. Then have it be a final 20-lap, winner take all segment. (Sean, San Diego)
• Run one 30-lap heat. Stop for tires. Invert the finish order. Run another 30-lap heat. Total the points pits and starting grid determined by total points. Now the fun part: a 60-lap race. MAKE IT COUNT. The final win is an Automatic Bid into the Chase. (Bruce Lavoie, Concord, N.H.)
• First segment is $10,000 a lap for 20 laps as a warmup. Second segment is $20,000 a lap for 40 laps. After that, they get the break to work on their cars and are returned to the running order at the end of the second segment. Final segment is a 20 laps, each lap worth $50,000. Throw in a $500,000 bonus for the winner of the race and a $500,000 bonus for whoever leads the most laps overall and I think we have something a little more interesting. Every lap should be a race. (Patrick, Gastonia, N.C.)
All interesting suggestions, but let’s think bigger. First off, what exactly is the point of an All-Star race? In other sports, the All-Star games are opportunities to see the sport’s biggest stars sharing a court/field/rink in a way they never do during the regular season. Here, we see that every single week. So why run it in any way close to a normal race? I like the idea of elimination, although sponsors would absolutely howl. (Solution: give every eliminated driver a nice minute-long on-camera interview to plug his/her sponsor.) I also like the idea of putting something real at stake, like a spot in the Chase. Yes, I know that would make purists howl, but drivers who make it into the All-Star race have already proven they’re at least Chase-worthy. Barring all that, I’m definitely on board with the traveling-circus idea, and the possibility of reviving dormant tracks is an enticing one indeed.
Now, no more suggestions, please. We’re full up here.

Maybe it’s time for the NASCAR fanbase to be a tad more appreciative of what these guys do for us on a weekly basis. I don’t know many people who put their lives on the line to entertain people yet get so much flack for being safe. We should thank our lucky stars that we get to watch them do what we love them doing, and that is race. It’s time to stop complaining and love what we’re given. These guys owe us nothing and we owe them everything regardless of how much money we spend on merchandise and tickets. Without men and women who like to drive fast and put on a show we wouldn’t have NASCAR or any racing. That’s how we should look at it, not that they owe us because we make them money. We owe them because they put their lives on the line every week to give us a good show regardless of whether or not we think it’s boring.
It’s been bothering me, this “me, me, me” mentality that some fans have.
— Patricia Lauren Augusta
Simi Valley, Calif.
What? WHAT? I want WRECKS! I want CARNAGE! I want it like the GOOD OL’ DAYS, and I want it NOW!
Thanks, Patricia. Good points. I’d argue that these guys actually do owe us a fair amount; without fans, they’d be doing burnouts in the parking lot after clocking out of work, not after winning races and seven-figure checks. But yes, our sense of entitlement does get a little overwhelming at times. That’s what Smoke was hinting at during his Talladega rant, but he couldn’t quite say it as explicitly as you did … not yet, anyway.
Finally, we have a letter writer taking issue with me (imagine that):
____________________
(My words from the letter column last week) “I will say that I can understand why people are sick of the Danica coverage … to some extent, it’s the NASCAR equivalent of ESPN slobbering all over everything Boston.”
Really? ESPN slobbering all over Boston? Wouldn’t you? City of Champs. ESPN slobbers all over the NBA and only the NBA. Busby, I bet you’re a Yankees fan.
— PWard
SAWX RULE! BRUINS RULE! TAWM BRADY WILL BE OWAH PRESIDENT ONE DAY! WE LOVE YOU KEVIN GAHHHHNETTT!
A few notes for you, my Back Bay broseph:
1. It’s “Busbee.”
2. Calling me a Yankees fan? Why not slap my mother in the face
while you’re at it?
3. Junior Nation: when your guy starts winning again, don’t be
like Boston fans after their decades-long sports drought. You’ll

And on that note, we’re out. Thanks to all our writers this week. You want in? Fire up the computer and hit us with whatever’s on your mind, NASCAR-wise, at happyhournascar@yahoogroups.com. BET Networks is holding a free, open talent search in Memphis this weekend to help promote the upcoming 12th annual BET Awards.
The BET Next Big Music Star Mobile Tour will be auditioning aspiring, unsigned singers at the north side parking lot of Mud Island River Park (125 N. Main) Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Contestants will perform a cappella before a panel of live judges, including teen RB hit maker Jacob Latimore, who will select winners to make a video recording in a mobile recording studio at the event. Music industry professionals also will be on hand to help coach performers.
The tour also is visiting four other cities this year in the buildup to the BET Awards on July 1 — Philadelphia, Washington, Atlanta, and Houston. BET judges and online voters will select a grand-prize winner from among the recordings made in each city, and that winner will get a performance slot on a special episode of “106 Park” before the awards show.
“BET wanted to just reach out and give aspiring artists a chance to realize their dreams and put their name out there in the music industry,” says Miljan Vukovi, who is with BET marketing partner Idea Booth. “Even for people who don’t win, the chance to be in a recording studio and get your video up on BET’s Facebook page where it’s going to be seen by millions of people across the country is priceless.”
Registrations will be accepted at the event, but slots are limited to 30 contestants per hour. Aspiring performers are encouraged to ensure their slot by preregistering online at facebook.com/TheBETAwards. Click on the Next Big Music Star link and then “like” the page.
