Preventing Staph Infection Better

altStaph infections are caused due to a type of bacteria known as staphylococcus bacteria. This bacterial infection spreads when an open wound comes in contact with another staph infected object. Staphylococcus bacteria also known as staph bacteria breed on the skin, mouth and nose. These bacteria can result in minor skin infections or at times they may not cause any problems.

However, staph infections can become serious if staphylococcus bacteria enter the body, into the bloodstream, joints, heart, bones and lungs.  Some of the major symptoms of staph infection include redness and swelling around the infected area. Symptoms of staph infections differ in accordance to the place where the infection is contracted and on the severity of the infection.

There has been a significant rise in staph infections over the recent years. Research studies show that approximately half the population in the US contract staph infections every year. Staph infection spreads by person to person contact. It is better to stay away from the person diagnosed with staph infection. This bacterium also spreads from a particular area in the body to another area.alt

Taking proper care and some precautions can help in lowering the risk of staph infections. Limit the use of antibiotics and antibacterial products in order to prevent staph infection. The best way to prevent staph infections is to maintain hygiene. Here are a few tips that will help prevent staph infections.

  • Avoid sharing personal belongings like towels, clothing and eatables with others; this increases the risk of contracting staph infection.

  • Since staph infections are easily transmitted through open wounds, it is best to keep away from touching open wounds of other people.
  • Ensure to keep cuts and wounds covered until they fully heal. This is one of the best ways to prevent staph infection.
  • Use an antiseptic to clean cuts and wounds regularly. This will help in preventing staph infection by lowering the chances of its transmission from person to person.
  • Drinking at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily will help in flushing out all kinds of bacteria that cause infection in your body.
  • Wash hands before cooking meals and avoid consuming uncovered food.
  • Certain areas like bathrooms, athletic equipment, lockers and the gym can be contaminated with germs and bacteria. It ialts important to disinfect these areas with the use of wipes, sprays and disinfectant cleaners.
  • Staph infection can be got from contaminated clothing. It is therefore essential to wash athletic apparel and clothing immediately to lower the risk of developing staph infections.

Ringworm – Causes and Symptoms

Ringworm is a misnomer because it is an infection caused by fungus not by a worm. Ringworm is a skin infection caused by a fungus depending on their location on the body. It is characterized by ring-shaped red, scaly patches with clearing centers. The most commonly affected areas are the scalp, feet, nails, and groin.

Causes of ringworm:
Infection is caused by different species of dermatophytes, skin fungi, though most common are Trichophyton and Microsporum. This fungus feeds on the dead layer of the skin or keratin like hair and nails and survives on warm and moist area of the skin.
It can be passed through contact with contaminated items such as a brush, hat, towel, unwashed clothing, and pool or shower surfaces.

Certain conditions increase the risk of spreading the fungi (more than one fungus) that cause ringworm. These include dampness, humidity, and dirty, crowded living conditions.
In rare cases, the causes of ringworm infection can be attributed to contact with infected soil.

Adults can become carriers of scalp ringworm without developing any symptoms. This is because usually by the time you reach adulthood, your body has developed a defense against the infection. However, if you are a carrier of a ringworm infection, you can pass the condition on to you children, who may then go on to develop symptoms. Ringworm symptoms on the body usually appear 4-10 days after exposure. Scalp symptoms will appear in 10-14 days.

Symptoms include:

  • Red, eminent, swiftly mounting, ring like sore on the skin
  • Sore itself may contain crust, scales, or fluid-containing areas
  • Itching and pain in that area

Prevent Skin Diseases with Antibacterial Soaps

Disease causing micro-organisms are everywhere in the environment around us. In the air we breathe, in the water, on the floor, on our clothes, in marketplace. These micro-organisms are bacteria, fungi, parasites or viruses. Every minute of every day we are susceptible to these germs.

Skin’s Natural Defense:

Our body has natural immune systems in place to counter attack these germs but with constant wear and tear on our systems these immune mechanisms falter and sometimes fail. Skin’s natural defense keeps these micro-organisms from entering the skin and infecting skin and bloodstream but constant use of harmful chemical based cosmetics and soaps breakdown this defense mechanism and makes our skin vulnerable to diseases. These chemicals are found not only in cosmetics and cream which we apply but the most common culprit is the washing soap and bathing gels we use.

Harmful Effects of Soaps:

Most washing gels have chemicals like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which are detrimental to our skin’s health. The entire purpose of using soaps and bathing gels is to clean the skin of sweat and dirt. The chemical used to create foam in your soap and give it the clean feeling, strips the skin of its natural oils and unbalances the defense structure of your skin. These natural oils are required by skin to keep it moisturized and prevent any germs from entering. Moreover, clean feeling is emphasized in these soaps by adding chemical fragrances which further irritate skin. Thus, these soaps not only clean the body of dirt and grime but are agents for destructing skins defense mechanism, without which skin is prone to skin diseases like Athlete’s foot and Jock itch.

Antibacterial Soaps:

The ideal agent for cleaning the body of dirt and grime without disrupting the skins natural balances is antibacterial soap. Antibacterial soaps kill and neutralize any harmful bacteria present on the skin. Antibacterial soaps are perfect for cleaning the body without stripping the skin of its natural oils. These soaps do not disturb natural balance of skin and help in maintaining skin hygiene.

These may be herbal ingredients like chamomile, calendula or chemical ingredients like triclosan. These soaps are absolutely safe to use. An antibacterial soap is designed to kill the bacteria on your body. These soaps can be found in the form of a bar or liquid. Liquid hand wash soaps with antibacterial properties are becoming increasingly popular in keeping your hands free from germs.

Benefits of Antibacterial Soaps:

Antibacterial soaps have been in use in hospitals for ages. These soaps not only kill bacteria but also control the spread of these germs. Controlling the spread of bacteria also prevents many stomach and blood infections commonly caused by them. Most importantly, antibacterial soaps are beneficial in preventing skin infections like Athlete’s foot and Jock Itch.Antibacterial soaps are effective in curing and preventing fungal and bacterial infections of your skin. These soaps do not allow micro-organisms to grow on your body thus preventing skin infections from bothering you. Many other skin problems such as rashes, swelling, and itching are significantly reduced by regular use of antibacterial soap. Using these soaps also gives a blemish free skin by getting rid of acne. A healthy flawless skin is everybody’s dream. This is achievable by use of antibacterial soaps.

Genital Herpes: Relief and prevention methods

Genital herpes is a form of viral infection caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2). It is a painful and worrying disease more common than people believe. Genital herpes is mostly an asymptomatic disease occurring as blisters around the genital area or the rectum. The blisters disappear in around 3-4 weeks. Once the virus has entered the body it remains latent in the nervous system. This implies that once the person is infected by the herpes virus he remains a carrier even though the symptoms may have long disappeared.

Symptoms of Genital Herpes
Genital herpes has very few symptoms. It starts as red bumps or sores in the genital area. These red bumps are seen on the area where the virus entered the body which is the labia, clitoris, vagina, vulva, cervix, anus, thighs, or buttocks in women and penis, scrotum, anus, or buttocks in men. After about 24-72 hours these blisters burst oozing fluid (also known as viral shedding) and leave painful sores.

These sores heal in times and scabs are formed, which fall off in about 4 week’s time. Other related symptoms are itching and burning sensation when passing urine, swollen and tender lymph glands in the groin region and sometimes also throat and under the arms.  Muscle aches, headaches and fever may also be seen in patients. The symptoms and infection take around 21 days to heal.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Genital Herpes
Herpes can be diagnosed by a physical examination of the sores by a medical practitioner. Many antiviral medications like acyclovir, valaciclovir, and famciclovir are effective in treatment of genital herpes. They help in reduction of painful symptoms. Other medications like anti-inflammatory analgesics may also be prescribed to reduce fever and burning. Topical medication is also applied on the sores to reduce swelling and pain. Some of these topical medications are also available over the counter.

Transmission and Prevention of Genital Herpes
Classified as a sexually transmitted disease (STD), genital herpes is spread by sexual contact with an infected person. The virus is contained in the fluid from the oozing blisters. Once the virus enters the body it cannot be removed ever and becomes active from time to time causing outbreaks. Some people experience many outbreaks in their life and some may just experience one. The exact cause of the virus becoming active is not known.

Though it cannot be removed from the body completely, outbreaks can be prevented by some simple techniques. Listed here are some tips to remember.

  1. Take antiviral medication for the full term prescribed even after the external symptoms have disappeared.
  2. Apply topical ointments on the sores regularly. Not only will this reduce the sores greatly but also curtail the virus’s activity.
  3. Lead a stress free life. Reducing stress from life has been known to prevent outbreaks. Meditation, Yoga and other physical exercises release pheromones which reduce stress from the body.
  4. Maintain a healthy diet rich in proteins and low in processed food.
  5. Take a multivitamin supplement with your diet. Certain vitamins like C and minerals like zinc have been known to prevent herpes outbreaks.
  6. Herbal tea leaves like Terragon tea has antiviral properties. Take this regularly.

Lead a Healthy Life
Even though the herpes virus remains in the body forever, many people lead a healthy herpes free life by maintaining a good lifestyle. Reducing stress and remaining active physically greatly reduces the chances of herpes outbreaks. All it requires is making some lifestyle changes and being attuned to your body. As the disease has no permanent cure and has troubled mankind for ages, preventing further outbreak is the only method of avoiding the painful disorder.

Athlete’s foot causes the skin to get whitened between the toe with itch and rashes. Occurs mostly in athletes due to moisture, sweat and unhygienic conditions in socks and shoes.
