How Much Should You Let Your Little Girl Choose Her Clothing

How Much Should You Let Your Little Girl Choose Her Clothing?

When it comes to dressing up, sometimes little girls get treated as though they are simply live dress up dolls. In many ways, this can be aggravating for a little girl. What if she wants to wear tee shirts and jeans, but her mom repeatedly dresses her up in dresses. It’s frustrating. Sometimes the little girl wants to wear more skirts than jeans. Maybe the weather just doesn’t permit or there are some other issues. Here are a few tips on what to let our daughter choose and what not to.

Firstly, shoes. Some celebrity kids might have the stamina and poise to run around in heels, but let’s face it: a kid really doesn’t need heels. If they do have them, they should be much more subdued. If it’s under half an inch, chances are that any little girl can wear it. (Seeing how much their feet are still developing, wearing these types of shoes probably wouldn’t be wise anyways.) Try your best to explain to her that they will eventually hurt her feet and she could trip and fall and hurt herself.

Secondly, jewelry. A lot of jewelry on the cheaper end of the spectrum contains nickel. Unfortunately, nickel is a common allergen. True, your little girl might love her new earrings, but the fact is, if it starts to bother her ears, they need to go. If she’s frequently taking them out and putting them back in, or her earlobes seem itchy, then you may want to change what type of earrings you buy her. This generally means going for stainless steel or a precious metal. Avoid white gold, however, because it holds a high concentration of nickel.

Clothing. Look at how tight or loose something is, whether it is soft or rough. Explain to your little one when picking her clothing to not only find out how soft something is on the outside but also by checking inside. For example, explain to her that some clothes are like a rug. On one side, it’s soft and cuddly. On the other side, it’s rough and scratchy. Maybe something rough and scratchy on the outside is soft on the inside, or vice versa. Teach her this and see where she goes with it. Help her to make the final decision though.
