(More customer reviews)I've had these LED bulbs running in my backyard Malibu fixtures for two years.Much to my surprise (because of the exposed circuit board), they've been fairly reliable...out of 18 bulbs, only one has failed while being used.The DOA rate was higher, with two out of the original 20 being defective.Luckily, I'd ordered a couple of extras, assuming that they wouldn't last all that long when exposed to outside temperatures and humidity.

The power consumption of these bulbs is quite low...about 100ma at 12 volts.That's about 1.0 watts.Translated into English, that means that you can string many more lamps on a single wire, as well as using a significantly smaller transformer.I replaced a 600 watt beast (Malibu/Intermatic 600watt Transformer with a couple of solar panels and some large batteries.The power savings has more than paid for itself.

The light output of these particular bulbs is roughly equivalent to 7- to 10-watt bulbs; significantly less than the original 20-watt bulbs.In places where I needed more light, I used T10 LED 194 Wedge base, Dash Board or Dome Light Bulbs 12v Ac 15 SMD LED 1.44 Watt 105 Lumen Warm White, 1415WW.Those particular bulbs use a bent wire wrapped around the plastic base for the electrical connection and corrosion has caused a higher percentage to fail.

My recommendation...Don't go out and buy a whole slug of these without trying them first.Pick up a couple and see how you like them in your fixtures in your yard.They're certainly worth trying.

(More customer reviews)When I first wired my backyard, almost eight years ago, I put in a dozen of these lights.They looked good, but didn't last too long.

Pro:
- Look great for a while.
- Easy to install
- Inexpensive

Here's what went wrong:
- Aluminum corrodes.In some cases, the stake almost completely dissolved an inch underground.In others, the screw thread joining the top section to the post corroded and the sections couldn't be separated to replace a burned-out light.And in still others, the sections could be separated, but wouldn't firmly fasten together again.
- The bottom is open for ventilation.Bugs get inside and carry dirt with them.The lamp reflectors serve nicely to push the falling dirt up against the bulb, which then promptly burns out...the lamps run very hot and it's important that the heat pass through glass instead of heating the glass. (Hence the warning not to touch the bulb when installing.The oil from your fingers interferes with the heat transmission.)
- If they last, the black paint eventually turns gray and flakes off.

A couple of people mentioned that they've had a hard time finding bulbs.That's surprising as they're standard MR-16 bulbs, available in all the big box stores, almost every hardware store (at least those where I looked!) and on-line at here at Amazon. (See Halogen Light Bulb, MR-16, BAB, GX5.3 Base, 12 Volts, 20 Watt, 36° Flood for one of many choices.)LED bulbs also work, but you need to be careful that you leave some regular incandescent bulbs on the lamp string...with only LED Lamps, the load is too low and the standard transformer's output voltage can rise and substantially shorten the life of the LEDs.

Most of the complaints with solar lights is the weak output of light and the short duration of light. This is very true with most of these lights.This light is really well bulit and well designed.You can move the solar panel according to the sunlight easily and it comes with the option of steaking it into the ground or a wall mound kit.After I put it in the sun to charge it up for a few hours it was good to go that night.I was impressed with the output of light.You must realize this will not compare with the real thing but it does the job very well.It's a very soft look so if you want lots of heavy light then get the real thing and spend a lot of money.For 20 bucks this is a great light.I've ordered about 15 at this point to fill in the dark areas of my yard.I have some 15 foot palm trees and put 2 spots on each tree and it looks great.Buy one and do a test like I did and I think you will end up buying more.By the way, out of 15 I bought 1 was not working properly and the customer service was fantastic. They emailed me a ups lable and will swap it and send me a new one.

(More customer reviews)This is my second Malibu/Intermatic light set, and I have found both to be very difficult to keep lit.I'd love someone who considers this to be an easy-to-use set to tell me what I'm doing wrong.The device used to connect each light to the central cable requires squeezing two spiked halves together to pierce the cable, and hoping the spike on each half makes AND holds contact with the wire beneath the outer insulation.I'm pretty good with my hands but getting this connection setup to work - AND hold - has proven next to impossible.Once connected, if the light is moved or knocked over there's a good chance the connection will have to be redone.Often it is difficult to tell whether the light bulb is burned out or if you just haven't made connection exactly right.I started to invest the time this spring in getting the set going again (only its second season) and after half an hour without getting ANY of the four lights to work I realized this just isn't worth the trouble... even thought when it works the lights are really nice.I'd love to know if there are wired 4-light sets out there with a more reliable connection device.

PS - I contacted Intermatic/Malibu via email to ask what 4-light sets they make that do NOT have this type of connection device... after receiving a canned reply promising a response within 3 days, they failed to follow up within even 5 days and to date they have continued to ignore my inquiry.I guess they either don't have any or have more business than they can handle.Another 'customer service' failure...

PSS - After the above I called Intermatic/Malibu but my only option (even during business hours) was leaving a message, which no one returned.On another attempt I reached someone who surprisingly admitted to me she also had lots of trouble with the connection device.She suggested stripping away insulation on the main cable to help those spikes make contact with wire, or after stripping the cable removing the connection devices and hard-wiring the light unit.Although willing to give either a try, as I stripped away insulation I began thinking "what's wrong with this picture...?"

By the way, when I opened the light units to try changing bulbs, two of the four units were corroded in the bulb chamber... after being outside about a year.

Speaking of bulbs, I had forgotten to mention that when trying to replace bulbs last summer, nothing in the owners' manual that I could find tells you what kind of bulb it takes.Two had burned out LONG before any reasonable bulb life.I bought what appeared to be the right type (the commonly used MR-16, which has a built-in reflector).When I tried to remove the old bulb I found that what looks like an MR-16 bulb in the Malibu unit is actually a bolted-in reflector and a separate tiny Christmas-tree-sized bulb.

It was very overcast here this afternoon and all 4 lites came on. I used 2 on the ground stakes and hung the other 2 from the small shepard's hooks that were included. So far, so good. A "10" in our book. Will finish this review and order another set ASAP. Feel confident when ordering but do yourself a favor and get 2 sets at once. (More customer reviews)I bought 4 of these to replace some older low-voltage spotlights in my front yard.Installation was a breeze and they look great!The light these put out is more than enough to light a tree, side of a house, address, etc.The lamp housing is metal and very high quality.The stakes are plastic but strong; they went into my hard clay soil without a problem.My only tip is to install low voltage outdoor lighting when the temperature is over 75 degrees; that way, the low voltage line buried in the ground is pliable enough to attach the lights to.Otherwise, it's difficult to press the spikes on the light connector deep enough into the low voltage main line.

After a year, this increased to 3 or 4 per week. The units themselves then started to fail as well. When the whole thing became too expensive and too much labor to maintain, I uninstalled the whole thing and threw it away. Buyer beware!

(More customer reviews)These lights nicely replaced more expensive lighting we had. The fixture is a solid casting that's well machined. The lens is white glass, not plastic like others I looked at. The finish is rustic looking and blends well with the landscaping. The stem is a little short for my needs at 6". but I was able to use a longer standard 1/2" threaded galvanized pipe to make them tall enough to stand above some border plants. Not a big deal for me. The price was good even though I spent the extra $$ for the longer pipes at my local hardware store. I'd buy more of these for future projects.

I had the Hampton Bay 300 watt model....DO NOT BUY HAMPTON BAY TRANSFORMERS.CUSTOMER SERVICE IS VERY BAD AND THERE IS NOT EVEN ANY WARRANTY OR CUSTOMER SERVICE INFO IN WITH THE PRODUCT, as I found out when it broke and going to Home Depot for help was a joke.Anyway, I am happy so far with the Malibu and it seems that it has a bigger transformer than the Hampton and the overall construction is better.Just to convince you of how bad the Hampton Bay customer service is try doing a search for them online, you'll see.

(More customer reviews)These lights are different from any other solar light that I've seen during all of my research in finding solar lights to build my "solar light garden." I live in an apartment building on the second floor, with a deck outside the living room. Since I don't have a yard, I decided to create a "garden" with solar lilies, tulips, pansies, cattails, globes, butterflies, dragonflies, and solar fiber optic sprays (which sway in the breeze). Almost every single "stalk" has a bare space of about 6" to 7" between the top of the solar cell and the bottom of the "flower" or globe or butterfly/dragonflies. This grass can be manipulated in the degree of spread and covers that bare space perfectly. I think anybody using garden solar lights would be delighted with the addition of this "grass." (In addition, the shipping service/speed was about as quick -- actually, quicker -- as anybody could reasonably expect.) It is my understanding this company has just begun using Amazon Marketplace. They possess quality of product and quality of service, so do not, I repeat, do not, let their relatively short period of working through Amazon be a deterrent. They are seemingly a company concerned with customer service, and that is increasingly hard to find in today's modern world.

(More customer reviews)I got these because I was not a fan of the solar powered lights and I didn't want something that looked cheep.

Over all I am pleased. The LED light output is good but they do lack the warm feel of an incandescent bulb.

The appearance is good out of the box but long term I don't really expect them to hold up to much abuse. They are made of aluminum and have the feeling of being a bit on the cheep side. One of the biggest knocks against the lights that I have is that you can't just pull them up and move them. The lights come in three pieces which are just pushed together. When I pull them up to move them the spike always come off of the tube.

All in all they are a step above the cheapest lights out there and most likely worth the price.

Transformer is small and unobtrusive with an included photocell to turn lights automatically on and off at dawn and dusk. Light intensity is the best and brightest. Only downside are the spotlights which aren't very bright and don't cast much light on anything more than two feet from them. All and all a great bargain.

(More customer reviews)I had been looking for these for a while since you can usually only find Malibu.They are plastic but snap together in such a way that they are tight against water or insect infiltration.The cable loops up through the shaft and contacts to two sharp pins below the bulb.This is locked in place using a plastic cam pin.It's a little tricky to get the hang of installing at first and what I found that worked well was to use a screwdriver and push the cable hard on both pins until I could see it pierce through the other side, then put the cam lock in place.I love this feature where the connection is inside.Many of the replacements you find at your local home improvement store have clips that clip on the outside of the light to the cable and these tend to rust and look unsightly.

Another install issue is the light sensor.It is a simple on/off light sensor and while I was testing each bulb I thought my transformer pack was broken.You can not place your finger or thumb directly on top of the sensor.You have to cup your hand over it.Don't ask me why but it works.

I specifically looked for the lowest wattage transformer since I use LED bulbs in all my landscape sets.You can find them on amazon or on the web for around $4 and they produce 7-10 watts of light (much more than in this set) for 1/3 watt each.I've had some in the front for the last 4 years without burning out.So...I'm running all 10 lights at 7 watts brightness for about 5 watts total.It's silly that the companies keep upping the wattage with 120/300 watt transformers and larger incandescent bulbs.Save electricity and money by using LED's.

The led lights were bright enough to light my front yard and the batteries lasted for some time that I have yet to replace or recharge them. The design is rather nice and the copper os well put together. If you get the chance to invest in this and have an open yard that needs subtle and clean lighting, then this is for you.
