(More customer reviews)It was really easy
to put together and use.It was well packed - it emerged unscathed
from a very scathed box.The steel seems thin until you relaize that
it is just carrying bikes, not a trailor. It is strong enough and
doesn't weigh a ton.
However...It comes in three main pieces that you bolt together. The
resulting rack does exactly what it is supposed to.And it is
solid. That's almost enough. The problem is that a thief must remove,
at most, two bolts to steal your bikes.I used some Locktite on the
bolts and cured that little failing. Now the bolts can't come out
and the rack is about perfect.

Allen Deluxe 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2 Inch
Receiver)
Product Description:
This Deluxe Hitch Mounted Bike Carrier by Allen holds four bikes
and is ideal for weekend biking trips with friends and family
outings. A tie-down system securely holds and protects each bicycle
while 22-inch carry arms drop out of the way when not in use.
Appropriate for two-inch hitches, this carrier includes a strap
which eliminates lower bike movement. Minor assembly and simple set
up of the carrier is required.
About Allen Bike Racks
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology
for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government
cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his
garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor,
and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying
device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or
the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time
and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than
fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen
sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he
foresaw major growth possibilities.
Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln,
Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport
bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them
throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical
conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At
first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions.
Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started
Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen
Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle
distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and
offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex
now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small
garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two
factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen
countries around the world.

(More customer reviews)The 740RR (MSRP:
$400) is a swing-away hitch-mount bike carrier that permits access
to the rear of a vehicle without first dismounting the rack or its
load of bikes, a convenience that you'll wonder how you ever got
along without. The 740RR folding design is unique from other
competing swing-away bike carriers, admittedly very cool to see in
action though it provides no obvious advantages. An animated video
of the 740RR movement is available on the manufacturer's
website.
However, the 740RR seems to suffer from a few design flaws that
quickly become apparent during typical use, raise concerns about
the product's safety, and may eventually render the rack unusable.
My observations after using the 740RR:
1) Unnecessarily complicated swing-arm.
The 740RR folding swing-arm requires more component hardware and
pivot points than competing single-hinge swing-away carriers. More
pivot points mean over a half-dozen lubrication spots, more
mechanical points of failure, and several exposed and potentially
serious pinch hazards.
2) Swing-arm flex.
The 740RR swing-arm flexes considerably when it is swung out from
the vehicle under a full load of bikes. The flex can cause
permanent misalignment of the locking mechanisms that hold the rack
safely closed. When this happens, the 740RR is unusable.
3) Poorly designed locking and safety mechanism.
The locking mechanism is the most significant problem with the
rack. The 740RR clicks closed by use of a spring-pin. However, this
pin does not secure the carrier to the vehicle. Instead, the owner
must subsequently hand-tighten an ordinary threaded bolt before the
rack is safe for transport. Forget to tighten that bolt and the
carrier will swing away from the rear of the vehicle at the first
bump regardless if the rack is empty or carrying bikes, an
unnerving thing to experience.
Note that securing the rack with a threaded bolt appears to be a
typical safety feature of most swing-away bike carriers. However,
the 740RR's implementation seems poorly applied:
- The long threaded bolt must be tightened from the front of the
swing-arm, access to which is difficult and awkward when the rack
is loaded with bicycles;
- The bolt threads become stripped under normal use and eventually
can no longer be tightened, making the rack unusable;
- Neither the spring-pin or the bolt will engage if the swing-arm
is misaligned, again rendering the rack unusable.
4) Significant weight.
The 740RR is heavy and cumbersome to attach/remove from the
receiver hitch, and awkward and bulky to move when detached. The
carrier does not stand up on its own when not mounted. As an
alternative to hefting the thing up onto wall hooks, the
manufacturer sells a stand which allows upright storage of the
740RR.
5) Instructions contain errors.
The 740RR design has apparently changed since the instructions were
last updated. A few images do not match actual rack components, and
some parts are mislabeled.
Great Warranty.
The manufacturer warrants their products as such: "If one of our
products fails to function properly due to defect in materials or
workmanship over the lifetime of the original purchaser, return the
product and we will repair it or replace it free of charge."
Indeed, to my satisfaction, the manufacturer replaced my first
problematic 740RR (on which this review is based) without any
hassle and free of charge including shipping. The replacement rack
has lasted longer than its predecessor, but the threaded bolt again
shows signs of eminent failure.
Buying a Used 740RR.
It is probably a very bad idea to purchase the 740RR used. The
original owner may be unburdening themselves of a rack afflicted
with one of the many inherent problems I mentioned above. Also, you
would loose the protection of the manufacturer's warranty.

(More customer reviews)I have used this
bike rack for three years and it is still working great. The fact
that it lowers makes loading my bike easy. The rubber straps on the
rack are OK, however I always use softride velcro straps for added
holding power. The rack is sturdy and gives a quiet ride and it is
nice that the bars fold down out of the way so the bars are not
sticking out when parking in the garage or at the bike park area.If
three or four bikes are carried I suggest just loading the bikes
without lowering the bars so you will not have to lift all the
bikes at the same time. It's a good bike rack made with good
materials and I expect many more years of service from my softride
bike rack.

(More customer reviews)This rack is heavy,
which is good and bad. Good because it is solid and holds the bikes
very firmly. Bad because its a beast to lift on and off the car.
And that is without the two bike extension.
The hitch pin is unique and I have grown to like it very much. It
is treaded half way and it screws into the part of the rack that
goes into the hitch. This causes the rack to be pulled against one
side of the hitch on the inside and the end result is that it is
firmly attached to the car. With a standard hitch pin that is not
threaded and uses a cotter pin the rack can rattle around in the
hitch and this is eliminated with the new design. You do have to use
a wrench though to mount the rack.I bought a wrench to keep in my
car just for this purpose.
This rack is large for the number of bikes it holds. Again, this is
good and bad. When I mount bikes on this rack none of them ever
touch each other. Even better than that the only place the rack
contacts the bike is on the rear rim (using a standard Yakima wheel
strap) and the rubber surfaces of the tires. Very nice for people
like me who are picky about their bikes and don't want them damaged
on the rack.
I consider this rack to be expensive. At $359.10 for only two bikes
it's up there. And then another $234.00 to add another two bikes!
And I can only image how heavy it will be with the extension
attached.
The cable lock that comes with the rack has a loop on one end and a
lock on the other. The lock is meant to go and the hitch pin to
lock the rack to the car and secure the bikes at the same time. The
problem is that the lock is very hard to unlock once it is attached
to the hitch pin on my 2008 Sequoia. The geometry is such that you
have to insert the key into the cable's lock blind in a very small
space. And of course the cable comes with a lock core and its not
going to use the same key as the rest of your gear so buying a
replacement matching lock core is another expense.
There is a separate lock pin provided on the rack which works
nicely and is much easier to unlock the cable from but now the rack
is not locked to you car. To solve this I bought Yakima's stand
alone hitch pin lock straight from them and they were nice enough
to load it with my standard lock core so I didn't have to buy even
another core.
The cable that comes with the rack works nicely but is JUST long
enough to lock two bikes to the rack if you go around all four
wheels and both frames. Can't tell from Amazon's info if you get
another cable lock if your buy the two bike addition for this rack.
Even if you do there is another core to buy, if you're like me and
you want all your gear to work with one key.
When I first received the hitch and put it together, which is very
simple and easy, I did put the two bike trays on backwards. They
worked like that but after using the rack like that I could tell it
would be better if the two trays were reversed. I did that and the
spacing worked much better. Its tough to tell for sure which way
they should go from the manual so lay everything out and look at
the pictures very carefully.
The Yakima website says that you can put a bike on this rack in 10
seconds or less. This may actually be possible if you are only
including mounting the bike. I timed myself several time and it
usually takes about 20 seconds working at a normal rate. This does
not include getting the arms and straps ready or threading and
attaching the locking cable. I would say that from a folded up
position (the rack can fold up vertically when no bikes are
mounted) to two bikes mounted and locked can easily be done in two
minutes.
I have four Yakima LockJaw bike mounts (the old version of the type
where you don't have to remove any wheels) that mount on top of a
vehicle. Compared to heaving your bike over your head, climbing
your running boards and rear wheel and then trying to mount it on
top of a huge SUV this rack is a dream.
The only reason I did not give this rack five stars is the price.
At $593.10 for four bikes, not including any extra cores or locks
your may want, its getting pretty steep. For me though I feel it
was money well spent for the two bikes and I fully inted to buy the
extra two bike add on eventually.
EDIT 12/5/2008 - When I checked out my Amazon wish list today the
two bike add on for this rack was priced at $145.34.This is a price
drop of $88.66 from when I wrote this review a few days
ago.Needless to say I hit the 1-Click button before it could go
back up so I should have the add on to review in a few days.I'll
add to my review once I've had a chance to try it out.The main
thing I am worried about is stability. Its a pretty big contraption
with the add on (there are pictures on the Yakima web site) but
that's what keeps the bikes apart so I guess I can't complain.
EDIT 4/8/2009 - I have now used the two bike extension several
times and it works great.Just understand that it extends a long way
off the back of the car.The extension comes with a very nice red
flag that bolts on to the back of the rack along with two battery
operated red biking lights (the kind you put rear facing on your
seat post that can flash or do other patterns) that you attach to
the back of the rack for night driving.I can attach the first part
and then the second part to my car myself but the whole thing put
together is to big and to heavy to do by myself. The two bike
extension attaches to the main part using a bolt that requires a
wrench and it is not the same size as the hitch pin so a second
wrench or socket is required.Overall I love this rack (now that
paying for it is in the past).

(More customer reviews)I purchased the
kayak carrier with the intention of using it on my wife's matrix. We
have the Thule aftermarket rack (the factory roof rails start too
far back on the roof to be of any use) and when I put the carriers
on the load bars the one on the front bar was tilted forward and
the one on the back bar was tilted back. This was due the fact the
the thule bars were not level, a fault of the thule design. There is
no adjustment on the carriers to correct for this.I ended up using
the carriers on my Mazda 3 which also has an aftermarket thule
rack. This time the bars were level and the carriers both were
level. No problem putting the kayak on and securing it.
I would recommend this product, just make sure your load bars are
level, not a problem for yakima racks.

(More customer reviews)I did lots of
research on what stand to buy. I was looking for a 4 bike rack that
would allow me to have access to the back of our SUV. Then my
neighbor bought the Thule Revolver. That was my other choice if I
wasn't going to get this rack. So I was able to actually lift and
use the Revolver. I bought this rack (the Softride). And both my
neighbor and I agreed that the softride is better. He actually
wished that he had NOT bought the Revolver. This rack is way less
expensive and works more easily than the revolver. The Revolver is
great, but it's really heavy to put on the car and requires 3 steps
to swing the bikes away. The SoftRide moves down out of the way
with just one pin pull. And it's the only rack that folds down
(rather than swings away) that allows you to move it down WITH THE
BIKES ON THE RACK. The Thule racks (like the Ridgeline) are not
intended for you to swing the rack down while the bikes are
mounted. Also, when you are not using the rack, you can remove the
arms very easily. This is preferable to just folding them down
(like most other racks do) because then the mounting accessories
are not hanging on the back of your car where they could be stolen
off the rack. So ... I highly recommend this rack. It's a sleek and
functional design that does not put un-needed bulk on the back of
your vehicle. Go ahead and buy it. You'll be happy.

(More customer reviews)I had really high
expectation for this rack, after watching the video, the rack was
the most technological advance that I have seen, the design is
really high tech, however, the material is kinda cheap, don't know
whether it will last or hold up. The end cap was misaligned, and
the paint was scratch on several places due to poor packaging. I
had the Thule T2 and Yakima Holdup, the quality seems a little
better. The Yakima had the smallest footprint, second was the Thule,
this rack was by far the largest and stuck out the most.If space is
an issue in your garage, the Yakima stores better.Like the Yakima,
it has a very high profile, I was unable to open the rear tailgate,
the Thule did not have this issue. The quality of the front wheel
mount is better than the Yakima and the Thule, the rear wheel is
mounted directly on the painted metal surface, and in time, the
paint will wear off.The Yakima and the Thule has a better rear tire
mount. It was the most expensive out of the three racks, I don't
know if the extra money is worth it.
In conclusion, good design but poor execution. Also, the Customer
Service is really bad, called them during business hours, no
answer, left a message, have not heard back since. Seems like a low
budget operation, with only a few people working.

(More customer reviews)Slightly better
than your $ 25.00 Walmart bike rack but not by a whole lot. Three
bikes is virtually impossible to fit. Straps that hold the bike
frame to the rack are totally useless even for the medium size
mountain bike frames, they're simply too short to fasten around.
Once I managed to squeeze three bikes onto this thing, the straps
that hold the bike from the top of the of my SUV's loosened up, so
I had to re-strap them. The whole thing was swinging pretty badly,
mostly in the vertical motion, as the weight of 3 bikes proved to
be too much for this thing. Not too bad for 2 bikes.

hoping it would function as well as the single reviewer reported.I
was gravely disappointed.The rack's design is poor.On both a 2002

from a hair raising drive down the highway that I was sure would
end with a lost bike and a law suit.Do not buy this, I don't know
what kind of car the designer had in mind, but considering it
didn't work with a mid-size or compact sedan, don't chance it.By
the way, once the item is opened the seller won't accept a

(More customer reviews)The Yakima Hold-Up
2 is considerably heavy, 60 lb., giving it a beefy reputation.
Though it has a few design flaws that make the owner of expensive
mountain bikes (me) go hmmmm....
First it's easy to assemble and mount to your truck. It's even
easier to mount bikes on taking little to no time at all.
The Design Flaws:
1.)Plastic components on criticle pieces, one being the ratcheting
devices on the wheels to hold the bike down should've been made of
metal and the strap that feeds it should be high tension rubber,
not plastic as the ratchet can slip on the teeth freeing the
tension on the bike.
2.) The 'strong arm' that holds the bike down on the front wheel
can come loose. It too has very shallow teeth in which to grab
(stamped into metal)again using plastic on metal.
3.) The MOST critical piece that did in fact fail more than the
above metioned flaws is the pin that keeps the bike rack level. It
only goes in just over a quarter of an inch. As the bike travels
any bump frees the pin, it catches when it comes down and
essentially ratchets itself free causing the rack to drop. It
doesn't drop to the ground thank goodness but why even have it drop
any? It should bottom out when level and a pin should go all the
way through with a cotter pin of sorts to keep it in place. There
is a hole on the other side, so I drilled the pin side out and put
an eight grade bolt with locking nut on the other side.
4.) The two bolts that hold each platform are put in upside down,
along with the bracket,,..wtf? It should mount on top. Another
thing is that in about two minutes you can unscrew these with a
wrench and take the bikes along with half your rack. Not a good
anti-theft system.
5.) The cable it comes with is a joke, along with the locking
mechanism that bolts through your reciever. You have to pound the
lock on to get it to lock. The mechanism is comprised of a soft
lead like metal that shaves off easily, not a good thing when used
on a hardened steel bolt that it comes with, it weakens it then is
useless.
If Yakima fixed these it would have one bomber bike carrier. It is
heavy duty, just the design flaws are critical in keeping your
bikes on the rack securely. I had no problem with them falling off,
they just came loose, the pin backed out several times and the rack
fell several times, not good going down a highway.

(More customer reviews)I purchased two of
these upon the recommendation of a pro cyclist. We have Specialized
Triathlon bikes and they fit perfectly. We shipped them to Hawaii
for a race, and they arrived totally intact, bikes without a
scratch, dent or mishap (as it should be).
These cases are so durable and rock solid I would even go to say
short of the case being run over by a truck, they could withstand
pretty much anything an airline or shipping handler could do to it,
i.e. sliding, tossing, dropping, things piled on top of it,
etc.
The only drawback I've seen so far is there is only one handle
(Nylon strip about 2" wide) for pulling the case. That works fine
until you need to go through a door, so you have to turn the case
sideways to get through it. There are no handles to grab on the
sides, so even the baggage handlers at the airport made a comment
about that as it was cumbersome to move any other way than pulling
it with the handle and rollers.
Other than that, it does the job exactly as intended and worth
