I walked around looking for a while switched over to the bloodhunter light and the blood stood out like it was self illuminated. It was a little hard on the eyes if you looked at the perimiter but if you kept your eyes to the center it was outstanding.

Cygolite Night Rover NiMH Xtra 16W Bike Light Review

(More customer reviews)The Cygolite Night Rover Xtra is one of the best sub-$100 lights on the market. The combined power of both bulbs is intense. Not only will oncoming vehicles see you for blocks, but the ground will be clearly illuminated. Using standard M16 reflector bulbs, replacement and retrofitting is easy. Yet, the circular beams produced by MR16 bulbs is less than ideal for most cycling.

The majority of incandescent bicycle lights in this price range use spotlight bulbs with circular lenses. While useful for their ubiquity, the beam pattern is undesirable. Depending on the type of riding, cyclists primarily need ground illumination, forward illumination to alert motor vehicles or a combination of both. What riders do not need is illumination of the sky above. When using this light in a wooded area, you will notice the trees illuminated. This represents wasted lumens.

As you can see from automobile headlights, the optimal vehicle beam is rectangular. This maps well to human vision created by two eyes and little need to see obstructions high above the road surface. Interestingly, many of the inexpensive bicycles lights such as the Bell Night Trail (see review) have a rectangular reflector and lens. Hopefully, the high-end light manufacturers will adopt this pattern in the future.

Design problems aside, the Night Rover Xtra is made well. The build quality of the housing, battery bottle and cable is excellent. With the battery in a separate location, the dual beam head is rather diminutive and light. However, there is one minor problem with the head in its lack of side illumination that would come from by two small windows. Again, this is a feature common on less expensive all-in-one lights.

Having a separate battery in a water bottle form factor lowers the center of gravity and provides a quick means of stowing and removal. However, this arrangement obviously consumes one of the cages. A better solution, in my opinion, is a frame-mount battery, which is typically found on high-end HID lighting systems. Unfortunately, the conspicuous placement of the battery leads to another problem -- theft.

After several months of reliable use, my Night Rover Xtra was stolen at 3:00pm in an affluent area on the North side of Chicago. My recommendation to anyone who leaves his bike unattended is to replace the head thumbscrew with a regular bolt. You might also want to consider securing the cable with several locking ties and Gorilla tape. Otherwise, you may be shopping for another one in the near future.Pros

I only had one ball chop but besides that, it's practically flawless. One thing i reccomend doing is getting an electric hopper for it so it can keep up up with the auto or else you balls will chop. I have one so this is not a problem for me. I also reccomend getting a recharable battery and recharger for it, its a lot better than buying new batteries every time. This is a great price for this gun. If your thinking about buying it, buy it!

(More customer reviews)I had tried various battery operated headlamps for my recumbent but none of them provided enough light to ride at night on rural roads where there are no street lights. The NiteRider MiNewt.X2 headlamp provides adequate light, is very lightweight, easy to install on the bike and easy to adjust even with winter gloves on. The rechargable battery holds a good charge and is easy to affix to the handlebars. The beam is penetrating and adequately lights up the road and close surroundings. I have not yet outrun the beam. I passed a friend one morning on my way back home and he commented that the light was "piercing." Maybe I should have switched to low beam!

I would have saved my money and got the 3 million 2 bulb set up or the LSI 3800. The 3 way dimmer seems like a good idea and works much better than the 2 way Coleman 2 million. The cold cathode is much less bright than the Coleman's. Anyway, save your money and get the big vector or LSI.

(More customer reviews)I was undecided between a NiteRider light and a Light & Motion light.I made the decision to go with the Stella 200L.It is a pretty good light but I would not buy it again.Not only is the handlebar mount sketchy but the cord from the light to the battery is about 10X the lenghth it needs to be for a handlebar mount.This requires some creative wrapping and it does nothing to reduce the already significant weight.

To top it off when I contacted Light & Motion hoping that they might make a short cord for a handlebar mount they told me tough luck and if I wanted a shorter cord I should have bought a 150L light.Nice.That's not the kind of customer service that will get me to buy another Light & Motion product.

(More customer reviews)First off, the .20 bullets sink a TON. I doubt this actually shoots 300 fps, more like in the 200's. It has pretty bad range and a small clip size (I recommend getting a speed loader, makes loading a lot faster and easier.)
The gun has pretty high velocity for the range, very light and looks AWSOME with the silencer (which by the way doesn't silence anything, it's just for looks.) Overall, I would not recommend this gun. You would be better with a spring shotgun/sniper or spending spending a little more money on a better AEG.

(More customer reviews)I purchased my first Mag-Lite rechargable flashlight back in 1983 when they were first introduced.I still use that same flashlight on an almost daily basis on our farm.

My wife has had one for five years, and I have given numerous ones to friends and relatives over the years.The current light is basically the same unit as I purchased 22 years ago.

Over the years my light has been dropped from trucks, tractors, (one time it flew off the back of my motorcycle at 30mph), and it still works great.Obviously, I've gone through a number of consumables (bulbs, lens's and batteries).

Plan on replacing the battery pack every 3 - 4 years (I think I'm on my 6th pack).

Overall it's an excellent product and extremely well engineered and manufactured.

HX370S Handheld VHF Radio Review

(More customer reviews)We have used Standard Horizon radios for over 10 years on 2 research vessels, starting with the HX255, with which we were very happy. We then switched to the 350S and found them very suitable as well. Unfortunately, with the HX370, there is a weak point in the transmit amplifier and it burns out regularly. I purchased 30 of these radios 2 years ago and have sent ALL of them back at least once for warranty repair. While I can't complain about the service because they have promptly repaired them and sent them back, they have done nothing to correct the problem. So I receive them, they get used and 4 to 6 months later they fail again. Big Hassle. I would not recommend this radio due to this issue. If you do have one you can turn down the transmit power and possibly avoid this problem, BUT why get a 5W radio if you can only use ~3W?

Standard HX750s Floating Handheld VHF Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this handheld Marine VHF radio after reading a very positive review of it in Sea Kayaker Magazine. I won't review the feature set here, which is great(it floats!). My concern is with the reliability and customer service.

I purchased the radio last summer for use when kayaking off the Maine coast. I frequently paddle alone or with one other person. The radio was to serve as part of my backup plan in case of trouble, a failed roll etc. It had minimal use. It got wet a few times, after which I rinsed it in fresh water and dried it. It was well-cared for.

In September I turned on the radio and was greeted with a painfully loud buzzing noise. It was impossible to receive or transmit. I returned the radio for a warranty repair, got great expedited service from "Devon," and got back a working radio. Or so I thought.

A month ago it failed on me again with the same problem. What to do? I couldn't trust the radio now, even if I sent it out and came back repaired. In fact, I couldn't picture buying a new one - I'd be really annoyed with myself in my last moments if my 2nd hx750s failed to work. I bought a new ICOM M36 (so far so good) and sent the hx750s back.

In a polite and thorough cover letter I explained how I used the radio, my need for a really reliable device, and asked for a new one, not a repair. I followed up with a phone call, and got a vague response. The radio came back yesterday, "repaired." No new radio, no explanation of what was wrong. It "works" for the moment, but it isn't going out on the water.

This should have been a customer service no brainer, especially with a product that seems to be nearing the end of its life cycle (It seems to be heavily discounted). It's a critical piece of equipment, it's failed the 2nd time - replace it, and keep a customer.

Important Update: A day or two after I wrote the above, I received a very cordial email from tech support. They explained that in fact they had replaced the radio, but had attached the S/N from the old radio so that the outgoing scan would match the input from the incoming scan (the paperwork didn't explain this).

So, while I'm disappointed that the radio failed (and I'm glad I was not at sea), the repair service clearly did the right thing. Thank you. I'd be willing to give Standard Horizons products another try.
