After reading the previous review, I was skeptical about the unit, but being a Certified Master Mechanic with over 30 years of experience, I am used to varieties of testing equipment and they all have pros and cons.I found the Autoxray 4000 met my expectations with a nice, well lit display with adjustable contrast level and a user friendly menu platform. The first night I tested a '98 Jeep, '04 Ford F-150, and an '05 Mustang. The unit functioned perfectly and reported freeze frame data, trouble codes, pending codes, and I was able to monitor the PID's to determine if any hidden conditions existed. Fours stars due to having to upgrade ($) through Autoxray to view any more than the basic sensor values. Update on Jan 25, 2009...Still performing flawlessly after more than 2 1/2 years at a dealership!

MicroTemp Compact Infrared Thermometer Review

MicroTempCompactInfraredThermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This device works without contact, point at a dark object and it will measure the temperature of that object. As non-heat generating objects equilibrate to ambient, or room, temperature, that object represents room temperature too.

Infrared thermometers, IRTs, measure instantaneously, no waiting. They often cost more than $50, and commercial ones cost near $100.

As the IRT can measure a spot's temperature instantly, you can check for temperature gradients and thus, localize hot and cold spots. Its has many home uses. You can localize a heat source in a room or find leaking insulation; check water temperature after adjusting a thermostat; determine if your big screen TV is overheating inside a cabinet; determine how hot your PC is running before and after you add a cooling fan; determine if your air conditioner compressor is not working --- often what is perceived as cold air is often just the wind-chill effect of flowing air rather than truly cold air, and a thermometer best detects that difference; etc.,

Dark objects are preferred to be measured since they absorb heat, while light colored objects reflect it.Measuring temperature of light colored objects will cause minor errors in reading.

The Microtemp is low cost because its field of view is only 1:1 is limited to 120C, and error of ~ +/- 2% of Celsius reading. The Celsius scale translates to a reading error as high as 4F.

1:1 means it measures a spot as large as the distance of the thermometer from the object you are pointing it at.To measure the temperature of an object 1" in diameter, you should move the IRT 1" away from it.

Expensive IRT have field of views greater than 10:1, so it can detect temperature at very localized spots, and also, measure spots from great distances. They are often larger, and come with a laser pointer to pin point what area is being measured.

More expensive IRT also measure higher temps, over 500F.Water boils at 212F, so these higher temps are often for industrial machines that operate at high temps, but not too much higher to avoid damage. For home use, 212F is more than adequate for measuring anything just short of boiling water.

The device is like a flashlight and bullet proof in operation. You simply point at something and press the ON button. The temperature registers in under 1 second.Changing the batteries is as easy as a flashlight too: unscrew the casing, and pop them out.You can setup the default F or C scale easily and convert between the two.Measurements out of range generates an 'Err' screen, but the device is not toasted, compared to a contact thermometer!4F error reading is not critical for home usage since trended readings are accurate: meaning if you measure continuously for a time, the relative differences between measured spots is accurate relative to each point.

The MicroTemp or clones are OEM devices, can be found under different brand names for much less than $10 and is very cost effective.Standard thermometers cannot be found as cheaply, or as accurately.

Sunpro CP7978 Mechanical Vacuum Gauge - Black Dial Review

SunproCP7978MechanicalVacuumGauge-BlackDial
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hi,

I recently bought and installed the Sunpro 7978 Vacuum Gauge in our car to promote good fuel economy and conservative driving habits. If you would like to do the same, you may want to consider purchasing one. This is a reliable, good quality gauge on sale at a very reasonable price. My only comment is that I could not find a white faced gauge at the same price.
The way a vacuum gauge is used is this:Simply drive in a manner that keeps the gauge needle at as high a reading as possible, without being a nuisance to other drivers. For example, with the engine running, the automatic transmission in gear, and the brakes on, my gauge reads at about 17 inches of vacuum, and the needle is stable (does not move back and forth at all). With the transmission in neutral, it reads at about 20 inches (in the USA, 15 inches = 15 inches of mercury, but that is not important for our discussion here).
If I were to observe my gauge reading while accelerating rapidly (i.e. "punching it") I would notice that my gauge reading would fall to zero (0) inches, meaning that I was using fuel at a very rapid rate and that my fuel economy, measured in milesper gallon would be bad! However, if I adjusted my driving pattern so the needle stayed between 5 and 10, I would be achieving much better fuel economy. Now, there may be a time when "punching it" might be necessary. But, economical driving in these days of increasingly expensive gasoline mightbe important to you, andhaving a vacuum gauge handy on or around your dash board might be just the thing. And by the way, while driving on Interstate highways, even at 70 MPG on level ground, I find that my gauge reading stays above 10, which is a good thing! However, if you drive in hilly or mountainous areas, you will notice that driving up-hill will cause the needle reading to go down, which you cannot help because the engine is working harder.Yet, on average, driving safely at a slower legal speed than you are accustomed to may help you drive further on a tank of gasoline!
Also, I mentioned that the needle on my gauge is "steady."That is an indication of engine operation quality. If the gauge was vibrating, or even moving slowly back and forth, that would be a sign that I need to have my car checked forproper ignition operation (may have a bad spark plug, etc.), or even for any of a number of engine mechanical problems such as a burned engine valve.
For more information on the value of having a vacuum gauge, there is good information posted on the Internet. And, if you are not mechanically able to install one, a trusted mechanic can do that for you in less than a half an hour in most cases. If you do it yourself, just make sure that you are connected directly to a source of engine manifold vacuum for your gauge to work properly.
And, if you have a car with a turbocharger, you should consider a "vacuum/boost" gauge since your engine will not have a vacuum reading at certain speeds, but will have turbocharger pressure in the manifold, instead.

USA SPEC PA12-BMW - iPod in-vehicle interface adapter Review

USASPECPA12-BMW-iPodin-vehicleinterfaceadapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed this on my MINI. It works well and takes the place of the CD player. You use the buttons on the radio to access play lists on your IPOD.
I love being able to use the radio controls on the steering wheel to control the volume and select songs on the IPOD. It also allows me to use the IPOD in the normal way to select songs.
So what is the down side? After a period of use- it varies from 3 hours to 10 hours- the IPOD locks up. I do a soft restart of the IPOD and sometimes this will fix things. However, twice I have had to remove power to the USA SPEC- that is not just turn the car off but disconnect the power lead coming to the interface. That fixes things but is kind of a pain.
In case you are wondering, the text does not display on my radio. It just says CD1, CD2, etc. I thought text display might mean the name of the song playing might appear or at least the name of the playlist. But not so on my 2003 MINI.
So I like this unit overall, but if you want an install and forget it solution I can tell you there might be some frustration. I wonder if it is programmed by the same guys at that big computer software company.

AutoXray AX2500 CodeScout Review

AutoXrayAX2500CodeScout
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Of the code readers out there for home use, this is far and away the most capable and easy to use; with the USB-cable version of the AutoXray EZ-PC 500 Software which you can get through Amazon for around $50 (and be sure to get that version, not the 400) Before buying the software, however, be sure to get the USB version and not the older version with a serial cable; you have to ask before buying because vendors will sell you the EZ-PC 500 with the serial cable if they have only the old one, and there is no version number from AutoXray to tell the two apart. I gave only 4 stars because it took me a lot of e-mails and phone calls with the company to find that out--not because of any problems with the reader. With the 2500 and the software you are all set to get updates to keep your reader current; you can get codes from virtually every vehicle that has code plugs; and then you can transfer the codes to your computer to chart them and keep track of them for your maintenance records. You also can reset the check engine light. If you are a professional, a scanner (at least twice as expensive) is probably more appropriate, but the 2500 with the software does everything most of us individual owners could want. Great buy via Amazon at 2/3 of current MSRP (find MSRP at the autoxray web site).

Equus 3615 OHC Compression Tester - 7 Piece Review

I had to do a compression test on a Mini Cooper. Like a lot of cars, the 4 cyl Mini has her spark plugs deeply recessed down narrow tubes. I almost bought another kit and ordered the extension as an accessory, but then I found this kit, which included the extension. The hose and extension have std 14mm ends. I only needed the deep 14mm adaptor, but it's nice to know I have the 12mm & 10mm if and when they're needed. Worked perfectly, but be sure to follow the direction that warns you NOT to use a wrench when assembling or there may be weeping and knashing of teeth. I wish it came with a usable case of some sort, but judicious use of a sharp knife or razor when opening renders the awful plastic packaging (the type that sends thousands of people to the emergency room each year) somewhat reusable.

Autel MaxiDiag US703 Diagnostic Scan Tool Review

AutelMaxiDiagUS703DiagnosticScanTool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The scanner powers up quickly and overall seems a bit faster than the Actron. It's easy to use; as a guy I've yet to open any kind of manual for the Autel, yet was able to read by my check engine and ABS codes that are popping up on my vehicle. In playing with the Actron the other day I pulled up the screen to read all live data at once and scrolling down was very, very slow and the tool would lag when it was asked to display the next page of data. The Autel 703 scrolled through all the live data without any lag.I haven't exported any data to a PC yet so I can't tell you how well that works. On screen descriptions were provided for both PCM codes and ABS codes.

I have an Actron 9185, which is the same as the 9190 without all the OBD 1 connectors for pre-1996 vehicles. The Actron is a great tool, but I needed to read ABS codes and the Autel was about $50 more than the Actron ABS reader only, and the Autel 703 reads ABS, Airbag, and Tranny codes, so for the extra few bucks I figured it's worth a try, and I can always sell the Actron. I paid about $50 more for the Actron 9185 than I paid for the Autel 703. The tool is new and there don't appear to be any updates on the manufacturers site.I do expect Actron to have more frequent updates based on other online reviews. The Autel 703 DOES NOT come with the connectors to connect to pre-1996 vehicles though the software supports them.I have not seen the cables for sale anywhere.

As a hard core DIY mechanic that likes to troubleshoot and fix almost everything with my vehicles, I would recommend the Autel 703 because of the number of systems it reads, and at a lower price point than other products.

AutoXray 6000 EZ-Scan Scanner Review

AutoXray6000EZ-ScanScanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using this scanner for 6 day now and have performed 4 scans on various vehicles.

All the scans worked well. Not all the scans gave all the information I was expecting to see: It is VERY vehicle dependent. Some give a lot of information, and some give very little. All require a (REAL) vehicle shop manual. Although the codes are given in english description, the values given mean nothing if one doesn't know what the correct value is supposed to be! The same goes for reading various "Live data" in the Monitor mode. It's ALL meaningless unless you already KNOW what the readings should be!

The "PC" program installed without problems. You should be aware that the scanner connects to your PC via the old "Comm" ports, You know, Com 1,2,3,4... If you have no "com" ports available, your outa luck!(as in my case).

Customer Service/Technical Support: I tried to call and ask for support concerning the Com port issue and found NONE!! Support IS NON EXISTENT! They claim they have it, but I havn't been able to find it yet, 6 days and counting. The phones loop around, and none of the listed phone numbers work. Not ANY.

The Web support page returns a "server error" and has done so for the last 6 days.

As far as my Com port issue; I purchased a "Belkin" Serial to USB adapter and installed it. It provided a "Virtual Serial Port" via USB. This solution works fine. The update section of Autoxray' site worked. I downloaded the current tool and PC Software and downloaded it to the scanner. NOTE: The serial to USB adapter doesn't work with all software!! It's hit and miss... I was lucky.

The PC program provides a "Report" type screen with the data lined up as a summary report. Nothing fancy. No frills, no graphics. Just a way to store the data that was scanned.

My bottom line: Don't expect this tool to fix your car. You need real technical information about your car AND a healthy background in technical abilities.

I would not pay the suggested retail of $799.00! NO WAY!

I paid $450.00. I have the manuals and the background. it works for me. As for all those sensors... Is it the sensor or the wiring to the sensor, or the computer??? AutoXray does NOT play in that ballpark!
