(More customer reviews)i would just like to correct the description of this product in that it does not overload the circuit to test a gfci receptacle. Overloading the circuit would trip the overcurrent protection device (i.e. circuit breaker). A gfci does not provide overcurrent protection, it provides protection against ground faults... and that is what this tester would do to test a gcfi; insinuate a ground fault to test the ground fault protection.

(More customer reviews)So all my co-workers told me to get this one, this is what they use. It is great. The two detection sensitivities are excellent. The high mode allows you to find the general fitting or area that is leaking and the low mode allows you to find exactly what part of the fitting is leaking. Every leak it has found I can place my nose on and usually smell it right there (our gas has the rotten eggs smell additive) some I can't smell, but the bubbles test shows it. The beeping sound it makes is terrifying enough that it immediately opens customers' wallets. A tool that has paid for itself 10 times these past three months. And it has saved lives!!! My only complaint, and this could just be the batteries that came with it, if it is jarred while using it, it will sometimes shut off and I have to turn it back on waiting for it to warm up again. I rotated the batteries a bit and put some dielectric grease on the contacts and this has only happened once since then. This is a sensitive instrument, and I protect it with an inexpensive padded pistol case. Inexpensive + Saving lives = excellent Return on investment what more can you ask for.

Gardner Bender GVD-3504A Circuit Alert Non-Contact Voltage Tester Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the GVD-504A and was very disappointed with it. In fact, I was so disappointed, I purchased a different unit.
This one is sitting in the junk pile.

Here are the reasons:

1) There is no positive on/off switch - you have to press on the clip to turn it on. This is the main design flaw with this unit.
If you don't make a good contact it can be off while you're testing and not chirp. This is a terrible design and is, in my opinion, dangerous! My new unit has a positive on/off switch. You just twist and it's on. When you're done you twist it back and it's off.

2) Requires 2 watch type batteries. These are expensive to replace and harder to find. My new unit takes standard AA or AAA batteries (I can't remember which) that are cheap and easy to come by.

Overall I would recommend passing on this unit.

(More customer reviews)I have used several types of these non-contact voltage detectors.They are an essential safety tool for anyone who works around live wires, or wires that may be live, not just electricians.

Along with similar products in this price range, what I like about this product is: it's compact size which allows it to be easily carried and accessible; the inclusion of a light indicator (useful in dark places like attics and basements) AND an audible indicator (useful outdoors and in bright lights).Note that some competitive products only glow when current is present.

Features that I like specifically about the Greenlee GT-11 include: the positive On-Off switch that eliminates the need to constantly squeeze a contact point on some other models; and the use of common AAA batteries.Another brand of detector I owned used small watch/button batteries that are harder to find and cost almost as much as the purchase price of the whole unit to replace.

The GT-11 will identify individual hot wires, but may not detect current when the hot wire is buried in a bundle of wires or cables, or when it is encased in conduit or other shielding.As noted in another review, it will only indicate when inserted in the 'hot' opening of an outlet, not in the neutral opening (no current).Some users will find this to be a helpful diagnostic advantage.Others may want a detector that lights up anywhere near a live wire, without needing to identify individual conductors.This is a sensitivity issue.

Greenlee also makes a Model GT-16 with adjustable sensitivity down to 5 volts if that is better suited to the user's needs.

(More customer reviews)In order to make a current measurement you used to have to break the circuit and run one conductor through your meter's 10A current input and return back to the device from the meter's ground then hope there are no surges over 10A to blow your meter's fuse.With today's advanced amp-clamp meters, and this tool, Safe, Fast, Easy, and Accurate current measurements are posssible.

First, the tool is inserted between your device under test and an AC wall plug.

The tool features 2 "holes" to put your amp clamp into.This eliminates the need to have a split cable with just one wire to put your amp clamp onto.One hole is labled "X1" which has only one wrap of the current carrying wire in it, so your amp clamp will read the actual current used by whatever is plugged into this tool.

The second hole has a trick - Labeled "X10" it features 10 wraps of the current carrying wire and multiplies the meter's reading by 10.By doing this you can just move the decimal point to the LEFT one place and make accurate measurements of very small currents that your amp clamp may not sense accurately otherwise.It's a simple current transformer.Say you are using your clamp on a device that reads 0.1A on the X1 hole.Using the X10 hole your meter could read 0.5 - 1.6 A depending on its rounding numerics.Moving the decimal point one digit left you find what originally was limited by the resolution of your meter to 0.1 A is really 0.05 - 0.16A (again depending on roundoff error you eliminated by using the X10 hole)

There are two other convenient features worth noting other than the X10 current multiplier.Banana jacks are present for Earth, Line, and Neutral to make voltage measurements simultaneously.Also, the somewhat wierd looking "Jack" for the device to plug into is of the "Universal" design found in international hotels and cruise ships which handles most of the USA, Europe, China, Japan, and too many other countries to list.This is the reason the holes on the jack look a little funny and there are 2 ground holes - they accept many plugs equally well. If you are testing an overseas appliance you have an adapter here to the US standard outlet.Combine it with a 2:1 transformer or a variac where needed and you can get 230 volts to run the appliances for countries with 230 VAC voltage standards.

For $11, this adapter can get you out of alot of trouble neatly and extend the low current range of your existing AC amp-clamps.Most people pay $11 just for an overseas adapter.It's a great accessory.

(More customer reviews)This is excellent multimeter for use in the field for HVAC/R mechanics.Has not only volts, amp cks, ohms, but capacitor ck & temperature measurement.The infrared temperature measurement function is fantastic.There are only two minor drawbacks with the meter; one being when changing from Farenheit to Celsius or vice versa, you have to take off the battery compartment cover to get to the switch.It would have been nice to have the switch on the outside.Also, the voltmeter function defaults to "DC" when the meter is turned on & switched to volts.You have to press button to switch to "AC" each time. The only real disappointment is the pouch/carrying case included with the meter.TOO SMALL & CHEAP.It can barely hold the meter itself, much less holding the meter leads and the direct contact temperature measuring components. The pouch doesn't even cover the whole meter and does not securley hold the temp measuring components(dropped on ground twice!!).I would have paid an extra $20.00 to get a better, more secure & better protecting meter pouch for such a quality instrument.If I would have got a better pouch, would have rated "4" stars.

(More customer reviews)I needed a tach to verifythe RPM on a chipper engine that I had recently made some governor repairs on. This little inexpensive jewel did the trick and has since been used to register all the speeds of my vintage wood lathe. Professional photo tachometers can cost hundreds of dollars and really can't do a better job. The product is simple to use and well made, so if you have some RPM's to check, then go for this unit. It comes with reflective tape that you apply a small piece of to the shaft/hub or pulley of the device being checked, start the device, point the laser at the reflective tape while holding the test button down and the RPM reads direct. The seller of this unit at storefront was also prompt with the order and it actually arrived ahead of schedule, so for twenty one dollars and change, you would be hard pressed to find a better deal!

(More customer reviews)This stripper has both sizes 12 and 14, I bought this one but prefer the Klein models which have only the one wire size, as you can try to strip 12 AWG Romex sheathing with the 14 AWG notch and nick you conductors if you are not careful. But it is handy to have both sizes in one for smaller jobs. Very easy to strip off the sheathing with the Klein strippers. Tool is very good quality, but could use a re-designed catch also, on my pair the catch swings around and interfers with stripping sometimes.

(More customer reviews)I've been an electrician for 34 years."Touchless testers" have been around for some time and I've found them essential in troubleshooting and for personal safety. I've bought about every touchless tester ever made and this is the best. There have been inferior versions by Greenlee and others costing up to $70.00.

This one is supersensitive (make sure you adjust the sensitivity downward on a known "hot-wire before using and then turn up a tad, otherwise you'll get false positive indications). This instrument is audible and visual as well. Highly reccommended and inexpensive. The only reason for four stars is that the unit is not "ultra-grade" in build quality, but that's OK given the price.
