Question by RoyalPrincessP: How likely is it that
Lymphoma Cancer is genetic?
Can it run in your family like other cancers?
Or is that a myth? Specifically Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Best answer:
Answer by quijibored
NHL is not genetic but some families do have a slight
predisposition to develop various types of NHL (usually not the
same exact disease). This might be due to living together in the
same area where there is environmental or radiation pollution and
has nothing to do with genetics. There is no direct link like if
your mother had NHL then your chances of developing NHL are 10%.
Also, some types of NHL put a person at risk for developing
second types of NHL that are of differing type and
aggressiveness. Whatever immune defect causes the first NHL can
also tend to cause a second type of NHL in the same person. There
is a lot that is not yet known about specific causes for NHL.
Much of today’s info about cause of NHL is just speculation and
not proven facts.

New Delhi, May 10 (ANI): India’s renowned Oncologist, Anupama
Hooda Nehra, on Sunday said that the first vaccine to treat
prostrate cancer, called Provenge, is a major scientific
breakthrough that has set base to search for new ways to fight
the disease. The government of United States approved this
vaccine, which has been developed by a US-based Dendreaon
Corporation, the first company to show, a cancer vaccine can
extend patient survival. Provenge, the world’s first cancer
vaccine that treats prostate cancer after it has been diagnosed,
helps the patient live longer. Unlike traditional vaccines that
prevent a disease, Provenge treats prostate cancer by stimulating
the body’s own immune system to attack malignant cells.

Question by lo_mcg: Any information on breast
cancer skin metastasis?
Can anyone direct me to site that has information on this?
(Breastcancer.org, Breast Cancer Care, Breakthrough Breast
Cancer and Susan G Komen do not have this
information.)
Alternatively, can anyone tell me anything about the appearance of skin mets, and whether it only occurs near the site of the original tumour or can appear on other parts of the body? The limited information I’ve found so far seems to suggest skin metastasis occurs near the primary tumour or on the upper body. Does it ever occur further away, say on the limbs?
Best answer:
Answer by inverse_mushroom_cloud
According to the Merck manual:
Most skin metastases occur in the region of the breast surgery;
scalp metastases also are common.
An excerpted page from Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology
states: “the site of metastases was the scalp in 13.5% of their
breast cancer patients, the face in 22.2%, the neck in 9%, the
chest wall in 39%, the abdominal wall in 15% and other
localisations in 30.5%”
A preview of the Manual of Clinical Oncology states: metastasis
to the skin “typically involves the chest wall and scalp”
(http://books.google.com/books?id=XrE3iO_1TxkC&pg=PA564&lpg=PA564&dq=breast+cancer+skin+metastasis&source=web&ots=OwETffxWK1&sig=xARa9IvIV3WBa1-fZX4wYpmoC3s&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=5&ct=result)
I believe the typical presentation of any metastasis is multiple
lesions, more frequently than an isolated lesion.
If I saw a lesion on my extremity, I’d be thinking MRSA before
metastasis. Either way, you know the drill … get it checked right
away.

This is a comprehensive guide to cervical cancer for nurses. It is a practically-based text for clinical nurses who wish to consolidate and update their knowledge of cervical cancer. It is concise, containing comprehensive information for general practice together with useful references to facilitate more in-depth study. Thus it provides an invaluable resource for both the registered nurse with a general interest in cervical cancer and for the nurse specialist working in primary health, gynaecology, oncology and palliative care.
As well as containing the essential chapters about the pathophysiology and treatment of cervical abnormalities and cervical cancer, the book also addresses specific nursing issues such as sexuality, fertility, and symptom control. Moreover it examines the bigger, global picture of the disease. Full appreciation of global impact of cervical cancer on women involves an appreciation of the social, political and public health aspects of the disease – not only in the developed world but also in developing countries.

Question by sazzyoranger: How does a Nurse’s Aide
care for a resident with testicular cancer?
I’m doing a powerpoint presentation and need information on how a
nurses aid could help in caring for a male resident with
testicular cancer. I don’t think their is a way other than having
a procedure done to eliminate the cancer but I might be wrong. Is
their ways to treat after the procedure is done?
Thank You
Yes a male resident, and in long term care most preferably.
Best answer:
Answer by Denisedds
A male resident? Resident of what?
If you are referring to a nursing home resident there are only
about 250 cases of testicular cancer each year in men over 65
years old.
All testicular cancers require surgery anything additional will
depend on the stage.

attention given to breast cancer?
There are so many cancers out there, skin, lung, brain etc but I
see so much for breast cancer. They make products pink for

such. I see a lot for breast cancer, more then any other cancer.
How come? Is it more common or something?

Question by angelicagwyneth: Cancer
Awareness?
My mother died 19 years ago bcoz of “ovarian cancer”. I am taking
up oral contraceptive, my question is i am prone of having
cancer? what percentage? how do i avoid it?
Best answer:
Answer by Tarkarri
There are 3 different types of ovarian cancer.
Only about 5% are due to a genetic defect (hereditary).
Oral contraceptives can actually REDUCE your risk! (Opposite of breast cancer).
Causes
Age over 50, family history, changes in the genes BRCA1 or BRCA2
are associated with ovarian cancer. Higher risk occurs in
Northern Europeans, Northern and Ashkenazi Jews, with early onset
of periods (before 12 years) and late menopause, childlessness,
infertility, first child after 30 or never taking oral
contraceptives, as is the case with women who have taken
oestrogen only hormone replacement therapy or fertility
treatment.

This book will examine current issues and controversies in the design of clinical trials, including topics in adaptive and sequential designs, the design of correlative genomic studies, the design of studies in which missing data is anticipated. Each chapter will be written by an expert conducting research in the topic of that chapter. As a collection, the chapters would be intended to serve as a guidance for statisticians designing trials.

Answer by Bob B
Trials are quite a complicated business.
Below is a link to the US government database of registered
trials. For your information, here is a basic rundown of the
basic “phases” of each trial.
* Phase 1- A small study on just a few people to make sure that the new treatment is safe and doesn’t have any obvious side effects.
* Phase 2- A medium-sized study to see if the new treatment is effective against the disease it is supposed to treat, and if so, is it better than existing treatments. Sometimes, phases 1 and 2 are combined.
* Phase 3- A much larger trial involving hundreds of patients to confirm the results of the phase 2 study. This is the final stage necessary before review by regulatory agencies.
* Phase 4- This is done after the drug enters the market, and basically involves seeing if it continues to produce results outside the trial setting, and keeping an eye out to see if any unwanted effects got past the trials.
Needless to say, you must pass all of 1-3 to get approval.

I have trace amount of ascites seen in the pelvis. How
did I get that?
Ascites is defined as an excessive amount
of fluid built up within the peritoneal cavity. Both the
abdominal organs and the abdomen itself are lined with membranes
called the peritoneum. Between these two linings is a space
referred to as the peritoneal cavity. In pathological conditions
that result in edema, or excessive fluid accumulation in bodily
tissues, fluid can build up in the peritoneal cavity.
A septate uterus is a uterus with a dividing wall of tissue
(septum) within the uterine cavity. It can be treated with
surgery if the tissue is thick, but if the tissue is thin it
usually poses no problem during pregnancy.
As for what caused your condition, ask your doctor. He or she is
the best source for your medical questions. Ascites, in itself,
is not a disease, but rather a symptom of several
other pathological conditions.
I was also told that my uterus is septate
3 Potential Peritoneal Mesothelioma Symptoms
Article by Tom Parker
Mesothelioma is one of the less common types of cancer affecting around 2000 people in the UK each year. It develops when the linings of the lungs or the abdomen start to grow in a rapid and uncontrollable way. This condition is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos and because of this it is often nicknamed asbestos cancer. If it affects the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum) it is referred to as peritoneal mesothelioma. In this article I will be outlining three potential symptoms for this type of cancer and discussing the steps you should take if you notice any of these.
The peritoneum (lining of the abdomen) actually has two layers; the inner (visceral) layer which is beside the abdominal organs and the outer (parietal) layer which is next to the abdominal wall. One of the functions of the peritoneum is to secrete a lubricating fluid to allow the abdominal organs to move against one another. When peritoneal mesothelioma occurs it leads to both of these layers becoming thicker. This can then lead to a number of undesirable symptoms that are discussed below:
1) ASCITES:- As the inner and outer layers of the peritoneum become thicker, lubricating fluid can become trapped in this area. This can then lead to a build up of fluid which is referred to as ascites. Ascites can lead to swelling in the abdomen and also cause abdominal pain as the build up of fluid causes the peritoneum to press against the abdominal organs.
2) ABDOMINAL PAIN:- As peritoneal mesothelioma develops and the tumour increases in size it can start to press against the abdominal organs. This often causes abdominal pain and discomfort. As discussed above ascites (another peritoneal mesothelioma symptom) can also lead to abdominal pain.
3) POOR BOWEL FUNCTIONING:- As the tumour increases in size or the ascites cause further swelling the intestines can become blocked. This can make it difficult to excrete waste from the body and also lead to further bowel problems.
If you notice any symptoms similar to those discussed above you should consult your doctor immediately. Upon seeing your doctor you should inform them of the symptoms you have experienced and also tell them if you have previously been in contact with asbestos. Once your doctor has this information they will be able to perform the required tests and determine whether you have peritoneal mesothelioma. Following this they can then discuss the relevant treatment options with you if necessary.
Mesothelioma is one of the rarest types of cancer. In most cases these symptoms will turn out to be something much less serious. However, by seeing your doctor you can get a professional opinion on whether you have mesothelioma or not. If you have had persistent abdominal pains, your abdomen has become swollen or you have had regular bowel problems go see your doctor straight away.
Whilst every intention has been made to make this article accurate and informative, it is intended for general information only. Mesothelioma is a very serious, life threatening condition and you should discuss any concerns, treatments or lifestyle changes fully with your doctor.
