iRobot Roomba 530 Vacuum Cleaning Robot - Model# 72-94530 Review

(More customer reviews)The Roomba is fun.The 530 model doesn't use half of the owner's manual stuff (no special "lighthouses" to get it to do multiple rooms in series, no remote control, no scheduling function so it works while you are away), but it does clean.It can get out of any area it can get into unless it did it by moving shoes and jammed them up.Mine didn't get caught under the dining room table, but it spent a long time there hunting and pecking.It moved some slip on sandals to get under and then as it kept trying to get out they kept sliding in the way, but it eventually kept nudging them until it could get out.

It went under the cabinet where I store my flip flops to clean and ended up pushing them all over the room in different direction.

Don't sweat when it doesn't pick up "big stuff" like sweetener packets, the actual vacuuming area is smaller than the robot, so stuff gets nudged until it rides right over it in its pathing. (Does dropping stuff in front of the robot to make it clean more count as abusive harassment? :lol)

The wall/corner side brush does work well to pick up the junk along baseboards and corners, it also feeds it directly into the pickup area (it is the off side that has a problem with shoving small debris out of the way).

It can end up leaving little piles of debris if you let it range over a large area, the pathing algorithm would end up getting it, but when it moves out of the kitchen into the hall, gets excited about the front door rug, tries out the way to the kid's room, gets excited again about the front door run, then trundles back into the living room area, then finds the hall to the computer room and the computer room itself, it just doesn't make the full sweep.

It follow odd shapes it considers "wall" very well.It looks like it is missing bits, but the side sweeper brush is hitting the tight corner areas.

When you first start cleaning with it, unless you have just done a spring cleaning type of thing, check the debris box often, it isn't that big.

Open the debris box over the trash can and fiddle with the emptying, dirt/dust can hang by the filter tray hinge and dribble.Mainly empty away from the hinge while holding it sideways.

We have a Rainbow and it seriously would kick this little bugger's arse any day of the week for cleaning, but it is a lot bigger pain to set up to hit the high traffic areas only.This looks like it will be great for day to day maintenance of picking up hair.I'd have said pet hair (which was the first thing I noticed from both my long hair dogs), but after it worked the little corners around my computer chair and desk, I noticed that the majority of the hair was mine.I had picked up and stacked some of the various boxes of supplies, equipment and parts out of the way, so it had more access to areas that haven't been vacuumed in a while.

Not enough data, but it seems to have an issue where a wall to wall carpet meets a tile area.The little lip edging isn't enough to stop it, which means it doesn't sit and dig right there where dirt accumulates.It did quite a bit, but it was spending time with one wheel on the carpet and one on the tile and never could bring the side brush into play.That is a coding issue, but it probably would take more expensive discrimination circuits.

Another issue is that it can manage to get stuck under furniture that is just the "right" height if it hits it wrong.Did that under one of the wingback chairs, it turned under it where the bumper sensor wasn't, picked it up enough to jam itself.

If let it roam too widely, then when it loses charge it cannot find its docking station.Easy enough fix, I pick it up and take it where I want it to work and let it go, then check back on it and return it to the dock if it needs a charge.

Looks like it needs regular maintenance to keep it cleaning well.No big deal, everything pops out, cleans easily (need good pointy scissors to clear wrapped up hair) and goes right back together.I'd say at least after every second cleaning cycle when you first start up with it.Tip: the big wheels on the end of the big roller brush pop off so you can slide the brush cleaner thingy right over the roller after you have cut and pulled all the stuff wrapped around it off.

It is light enough to pick up and walk around with, so it looks like it is easy enough to just pick up the obstacles in a room, but it in there, shut the door and let it go when you leave the house.If you put the docking station in with it, you should get back to find it charged and ready for the next room that evening.I'll test that.Then just cycle it around the house doing a room or three every day and you should be good.

Overall a great little widget to keep the general level of dirt/hair/debris down between heavier duty cleanings.Bonus to that should be easier "heavy" cleanings without you having to do anything but move it and hit a button.

Recently I have been struggling over which vaccum to purchase.I did a LOT of research online, in stores, and had discussions with sales people, asking all the questions I could think of. Over the years I have owned several brands of vacuums including Electolux, Hoover, and Kenmore. When purchasing we typically bought the more expensive types(not always the best idea).I finally decided on an Oreck, and asked my husband to go with me to review the one I had picked out.The day before, the salesman asked me to bring in a piece of my carpet to see if the vacuum would work.Guess what - none of the vaccums they offered would run on my plush carpet.The salesman was a little embarrassed, to say the least.Then my next choice was Dyson. So guess what we just purchased from Sam's Club yesterday - a DC27 Total Clean.

Yesterday, before purchasing the DYSON, I vacuumed the entire house.This morning, after putting the DC27 together, I vacuumed again.I COULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT WAS IN THE CANISTER.It made me feel like I never cleaned my house!Now I understand all the rave over Dyson.It is my first week and first cleaning, but it is fabulous!In addition, I forgot to mention was that the small Dyson 6 handheld came with it for quick cleaning, for my car, etc, and all of this for $479.00 at Sam's Club.

All I can say is thank you DYSON and Sam's Club for making this wonderful vacuum and offering it at a price an average person can afford.

Fein PB350 Electric Floor Brush Review

(More customer reviews)The Fein PB350 Electric Floor Brush seemed like a good idea: Take a first class (albeit heavy), quiet shop vac with good filtration and also make it the inside-the-house vacuum cleaner by adding a $240 powered floor brush kit. And as other reviewers note, it does a good job picking up dirt. Here's the problem:

* The power cord that runs from the unit to the power head is on the outside of the hose and tangles easily. The half dozen or so clips Fein includes are half what you need. The cord-and-hose combination, even with extra clips, is clunky and looks kind of dorky. Guys may find it acceptable but spouses may not.
* Undoing the power cord to swap out the power floor brush is a hassle, so I bought a second Fein hose, for $60 -- one for regular tools, one for the power floor brush, and I swap out the entire assembly
* Total cost works out to about $700-$800: 8 gallon vac, the wet/dry tools kit (about $100), the electric floor brush, and the second hose

We went this direction because our house vac was dying and I figured, what the heck, give it a try. If I did it again, I'd get the 6 gallon Turbo II not 8 gallon Turbo III because the still kind of bulky for what I do (although still way smaller than the 16 gallon Craftsman shop vac we still have#, and I'd buy the electric floor brush only if was around $100, not $240 #I bet Fein's unit costs are high because it's a low volume item). I have a one-generation removed Turbo III and the molding on the underside of the handle is like 3 knife edges that cut into your hand.

(More customer reviews)I absolutely love this contraption.My mom has a lower model (300) without the cleaning solution reservoir, and using hers is what prompted me to buy the S600.It makes cleaning so much easier, and the attachments have helped me get into cracks and crevices that had been neglected in the past.My only complaints about the scumbuster are the the length of charge that the internal battery holds and the "storage"box.First, it'll die on you in the middle of cleaning, so you have to put it on the charger for a few hours to recharge it in order to finish.Second, the storage/carry case is the chintsy plastic box that it came in, and it does not stay closed very well.My mom's came with a nice carry container that you can carry around with you and store it in.I like the scumbuster so much that I bought two of them, one to give as a gift.

I think Black and Decker has some honing to do however, to make this product worthy of a 5 star rating.I have had two problems with the scumbuster since I bought it.The first scumbuster I received in the mail--only one of the two speeds worked.I sent it back for a replacement.The next one they sent me had a reservoir that leaked the cleaning product all over me and the floor, hence, there was none to use on the surface I was cleaning.This could also be a potential problem for products that stain clothes/carpet or are not supposed to come in contact with skin.Anyways, I called Black and Decker themselves, and they were very nice, and immediately sent a replacement reservoir, which I received in 2 or 3 days.No problems since.This is such a good product people, that I still recommend it even though I've seen a couple bumps in the road.You can use the scumbuster anywhere, inside, outside, in the car, anywhere.I've used in on the carpet, and even on the siding on my house(a whole other story).The scumbuster S600 can be used with or without cleaning products, and with lower models all you do is spray the product on the surface like you would in any other cleaning task.IT can be submerged in water too, to rinse off the cleaning pad.If you ask me, this is a way better product than the dustbuster could ever hope to be.Buy one (any model) today!

(More customer reviews)Consumer Reports rated an earlier version (4870) as a "best buy."By the time their articles went to print, two models 4870HG and 4870HZ, were released and neither has had a price increase.I bought the recent HZ from Amazon.com and it was delivered UPS in two days in a tall box which told me it was already assembled.Assembly for attachements and a reading the instructions was a 3 minute process.It is much quieter than my prior 1999 Hoover Bag Model and Bissell 2003 Bagless, both of which still ran but did not pick up much.It picks up so much and so fast, you won't have to waste $150 to have your carpets cleaned (assuming no embedded stains like grape juice).You will love it.There is not enough space on here to say all the great things about it.The price ended up including a second replacement bag and a replacement drive belt.Too many great features to mention here.

(More customer reviews)I used Orange Guard on several fire ant mounds, using the manufacturer's instructions of 3 to 1 diluted AND full strength.The mounds were ABANDONED.There were absolutely no ant carcasses to be found AND here is the important point, mounds appeared nearby in short order where there were none before.For emphasis and clarity, I repeat, even at full strength, Orange Guard DID NOT KILL fire ants, it just made them move.If you want to kill fire ants in the most earth friendly way, use boiling water.You will see dead ants, and except for the energy burned boiling water, no possible harm to the earth.BTW, as far as the spinosad based products such as Conserve, although safer than probably all previous such products, studies on spinosad show slight toxicity to birds, moderate toxicity to fish, and slight to moderate toxicity to aquatic invertebrates. However, it is highly toxic to bees and is highly toxic to oysters and other marine mollusks.Again, boiling water (as a nod to Ray Bradbury, I call it Farenheit 212) does no harm to any of these when applied to ant mounds.If you want an ant repellant, it does appear to accomplish that.
