(More customer reviews)I have a toaster
oven graveyard out in my dumpster. I was buying name brands and
subjecting them to only moderate use, yet we were going through the
things faster than pet goldfish.
For my most recent purchase I decided to pay for top quality. I
based my purchase decision on my experience with other Cuisinart
products and extensive reading of reviews from many sources. I've
had my oven for about six months now, and I've been heartily
pleased with my selection.
Besides durability, my chief concern in shopping had been size. It
turns out this is even bigger than what I had before--both wide and
tall. I can fit Corningware pans with the domed lids and knobs on
top. Yet the outer dimensions are quite modest.
I wasn't sure I would use the convection feature, and in fact
didn't get around to it until last week. It produced an excellent
roast chicken, and I probably will use it more and more to make
"weekend" dishes during the week. The additional cost for the
convection over the regular was small, so it's definitely worth it
even for occasional use.
The oven itself functions admirably. I love that it beeps when it's
fully preheated, and the heat sensor really does keep it constantly
and evenly heated to the correct temperature. I'm using this much
more than my regular oven, especially during the summer.
The controls are easy to use and well thought-out as far as flow
and intuitive functions. The only thing I'm not crazy about is
setting the timer--one press for every minute, one for every hour.
Gets to be a pain when you're setting 45 minutes. But, that is
balanced out by the fact that the timer alarm keeps beeping until
you come turn it off. No one little "ding" that you miss because
you've stepping into the other room for a minute, leaving your food
to burn.
Toasting is uneven as noted elsewhere, but this is typical of
toaster ovens. Adjusting the rack can help. And honestly, it's
really only an aesthetic problem. I do like that the toasting
fuction includes a countdown timer so you know how long until
breakfast!
My only real complaint lies with the broiler pan. Upon first
inspection out of the box I was pleased with its apparent quality.
But on the very first use it warped, and now buckles significantly
on every use. Further, after the first washing I took it out of the
drying rack only to discover rust along the bottom edge where water
had pooled. I didn't even think it could rust, let alone do it on
its first contact with water. I have to think my specific pan is
lemon, as for them all to be like this would just be inexcusable in
a product of such otherwise impeccable quality.
Also, the design team really fell apart when it came to the oven
rack on which this pan sits. The rack--at least in one of its
positions--actually wraps around the front corners of the pan. This
means in order to take the pan out of the oven you have to lift it
1/2" vertically over the rack. Lift it and whatever's on it, plus
whatever hot grease has accumulated, with nothing to grab it by.
The other option is to take the rack out with it, which means
tilting everything 30 degrees to get it past the stops. Not only is
this bad design, it's dangerous.
But since I'm not using the pan every day, and since I love
everything else about it, I'll still give it five stars.

pizzelle!I bought this for my husband for Valentine's Day (and yes,
I did make the pizzelles for him - his favorite dessert!) and he's
been asking for more pizzelles ever since!Another plus - the
pizzelle sizes are big enough to make one scoop ice cream bowls -
perfect for people like me who don't like a huge serving of dessert

(More customer reviews)I've had this model
coffemaker at work for a couple of years, and so I placed it on my
registry and got it as a wedding gift. As far as grind and brew
goes, this one is mostly good, but falls short in a few
respects.
The good:
o- burr grinder, much better grind than a blade
o- programmable - I just set it in the evening and it's good to go
when I get out of the shower
o- no major cleaning necessary every time you use it
o- I don't see anything wrong with the plastic at all. Looks fine
to me.
o- GoldTone filter - a very fine mesh to capture most coffe
grounds, but does not absorbe any of the oils from the coffee the
way paper filters do, giving you a fuller flavor, albeit at a price
of a slightly silty cup.
The bad:
o - the temperature isn't quite up to snuff - a little too cold. If
you pour it into a cup you pulled out of the cupboard, and add a
splash of half and half or milk from the fridge, then pour in the
coffee, it's just above warm. Not hot enough. Which also
contributes to the brew not being quite as good as the beans'
potential. Sad.
Update - being the engineer at heart that I am, I went and tested
the brew temperature, just to be sure. I used two different kitchen
digital thermometers, both in the basket and in the carafe. For
most of the bewing time the temp stays at about 165F, climbing up
to almost 175F towards the end of the brew. That is well short of
the 200F +- 5F (92C-94C). No wonder then. I was always puzzled at
how I would find great coffee at a shop, buy the beans, bring them
home and only get a mediocre brew. Now I know. Too cold.
o - there is a conduit between the burr grinder and the basket. As
you grind beans, the grounds fill up the conduit and push the
grounds that were there already out to the basket. It's okay if you
use it at the office and brew 10 cups at a time, a few times a day
(full brew takes about 10 minutes, BTW). Not good for home use
where you bew 2-4 cups a day: you are constantly using day-old
grounds. Not good. Next time this thing breaks, I'm replacing it
with a standalone burr grinder which dumps beans right out, and a
thermal carafe coffemaker like Braun, which brings me to the next
point:
o- No thermal carafe! What's up with that! For a high price like
that, I'd have at least expected a thermal carafe. Alas, no such
luck.
o- Reliability. At the office we've had to replace it about once a
year, which isn't bad considering how heavily we used it - multiple
10-cup brews every day. My home version quit (motor burned out, I
think) after just over a year of use. Luckily, the department store
exchanged it, a'cause it was off the wedding registry and they are
extra nice in those cases. Next time this thing dies, I'm getting
two separate pieces - maker and grinder, both can be had for under
half of the cost of these.
o - if you do get it, make sure to point the spout of the carafe to
the right, away from the basket, as the steam can make the
mechanism and beans sticky.
o- Brew time is too long. A full 10 cups take 10 minutes. Ideally a
brew should not take more than 6 minutes; after that time you start
to extract bitter unpleasant flavors from the beans. So if you want
to make more coffee, then make 6 cups, pour into a thermal
container and brew the other 4.
Better yet, don't buy this coffemaker.
Update: Capresso has come out with a new model, Capresso 455.05
CoffeeTEAM which does come with a thermal carafe. I don't know what
the brew temp is - I suspect still too cold; no way to tell. It's
an extra hundred bucks. I'm going to see if I can return mine and
buy a better one.

(More customer reviews)I have had this
oven for several months now. I missed an opportunity to by it as a
factory refurbished unit, and ended up buying it new here.
Initially, I wanted to hold out for a convection oven with a larger
capacity, but the reality of unit size and lack of availability of
a larger oven with similar features convinced me to by this
model.
I think I made the right choice. It is large enough to bake and
broil a wide variety of things without having to resort to the "big
oven", it has accurate, even temp control, and enough features and
custom settings that I am still discovering new and better ways to
use it.
It is a pretty large oven, does everything advertsed in best of
class fashion, it's very easy to clean, and looks "right" no matter
how your kitchen is outfitted. Even simple tasks like making toast
are handled better than any regular toaster or cheap toaster oven
that I have tried. When toasting bread or bagles, the first part of
the cycle brings the bread up to teperature without bringing the
heat elements up to "toasting" tepmerature. Towards the end of the
cycle, the elements glow bright red, and toast both surfaces very
evenly, and to taste. The result is perfectly toasted bread,
bagles, pizza slices, etc, without cold centers. The cycle can
easily be tailored for your favorite bread. Perfect.
Before I forget, someone posted a "review" here that really was a
question about what temp the oven is capable of. The oven can also
broil, so that would indicate that it can reach high temps, and in
fact, it can. The "bake" setting allows you to select a temerature
on the display up to 500 degrees. Most any cooking technique that
can be done with a quality conventional oven can be done with this
gem. And more. When I first started using the oven, I checked it's
indicated temp with my electronic thermometer that I use for
calibrating industrial sensors. In every case, the indicated air
temp was within a few degrees of reality. My full sized oven wasn't
anywhere near that close when it was new.
Broiling, baking, defrosting, and reheating leftovers are also
given the benefit of digital control over the cooking cycle. Even
the crumb tray was designed for effective operation, and ease of
cleaning. I have used a number of dedicated convection ovens, and
more than a few toaster ovens over the years, but this one is in a
class by itself. Even if you grew up with the microwave, this oven
won't gather dust on your countertop.
Update... July 12, 2005. This oven is used most every day, and has
proved to be a solid performer. As time passed, I have used pretty
much all of the functions of the oven, and learned to customize
settings to please me along the way. I have not had a single
problem with the oven since the day it arrived, and being easy to
keep clean, it still looks factory new (when I clean it). It is
about as large as I care to have on the countertop, and for bigger
jobs, I simply use the main kitchen oven. For most anything else,
this is the oven that gets the call. I still rate five stars.

(More customer reviews)This fryer works
great and holds the temperature well.It is a shallower fryer than
some.Deep enough to handle everything but large game hens or larger
food. Being shallow and wide gives it a significant advantage. It
creates a larger surface area within the basket for food to
cook. This allows for more items to be cooked at once when you need
a little space between each item!
Immersion heaters do use a bit more oil volume but that added
volume also leads to a more stable cooking temperature over time.
As a result, the fryer seems to hold temperature well and cycles
back to temperature relatively quickly.
1800 watts is a lot of heating power. The fryer will draw around 15
amps of current! If you have an older house, you will need to plug
it into a circuit that has nothing else connected to it.If you need
to run power from somewhere else in your house -- I prefer to fry
outdoors -- you will need a heavy duty extension cord. Look for a
cord of at least 1875 watts power capacity!

(More customer reviews)This unit and it's
successor the AJ3910/37B both suffer from the same fatal flaw:
although the packaging states in large bold lettering: "Wake to
your favorite CD track," there is no way to set a track number for
the alarm. The unit's alarm will ONLY wake you with the first track
of the CD.I called Philips support (which was quite helpful), and
they confirmed this. They also confirmed that Philips does not make
a comperable product with said feature.
It's a shame really because everything else about the unit is top
notch. The clock read-out is clear and bright enough to read across
the room without my glasses on, yet not so bright as to disturb my
sleep. The sound is top notch for such a small unit, and the
controls are pretty easy to use.
But the lack of ability to select a specific track to wake up to is
a fatal flaw. When faced with the decision to either: (a.) burn a
pile of custom CDs, or (b.) exchange the unit for one with the
all-important feature, I'd rather exchange the unit.

beat this as a basic fryer, especially if purchasing for a smaller
household. The capacity is enough to cook for 2 or 3 at a time, the
unit is well-designed and solidly built, and even though it lacks a
temperature control it heats the oil to 375 degrees (I checked with
a cooking thermometer) which is what most recipes seem to
recommend. The filter system works well to contain odors and the
drainage tube makes cleaning a breeze. The only issue I've had is
that it's hard to avoid condensation on the viewing window, but
that's no big deal. Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)Is the other
reviewer an industry shill?Reviewer based out of CT while "Get
Organized!" is based out of PA.I'm still suspicious.Anyway, on to
my less than stellar review (I ordered two sets).
Negative
* If you want the most common all around spray pattern you won't
get it.The spray is decidedly non-uniform.These are for the square
and round hole selections on the head.Actually, if you look at the
picture of the product that's sort of what the spray looks like,
water only spraying erratically to the left and right sides.
* You may not want to (unlike previous "reviewer" does) connect two
sets together or use quick-connects.These will reduce the water
spray noticeably (perhaps with the fine spray patterns it would be
OK).
* If you want to adjust the uneven spray you will have to pull up
the stake and reseat.A few times of this and you hole is too loose
for a good seating. So check where the spray pattern hits before
seating.
Positive
* The other 4 head are fine spray settings: three 180 degree and
one left/right pattern.These work OK.Again though making
adjustments to where the water hits requires repositioning the
stake.
* System connects together easily (though there might be bits of
black plastic in the orange threads you should remove)
* Stakes are pretty tough (but my ground was too hard and I had to
use a hammer and stake to prep the holes).
* Selection of spray settings head rotated smoothly with
detents.

(More customer reviews)I lucked into a
deeply discounted Prepara Power Plant Professional with included
grow light and the herb saver at my local Marshall's. I'd never
seen one of these before, but I'd tried my hand at various types of
indoor hydroponics before, and it looked well designed.
The first thing I must say is this: Aerogarden seed kits cost a lot
of money because they make sure the seeds are viable and the whole
thing is idiot proof. They pick miniaturized plant types that work
well for mini-container gardening, knowing that anyone who plants
an indeterminate tomato plant in their product is not going to be
satisfied. You can save a lot of money by using your own seeds with
the Prepara Power Plant, and I really love that about the product,
but you have to make sure the seeds you use are viable. (Nose
around GardenWeb and find out how to do that.) If you've bought
off-season 10-cents-per-pack seeds at Walmart, and most of your
seeds fail to germinate or rot, don't blame the Prepara Power
Plant. Also, don't expect seeds that germinate under very different
conditions and have different rates of growth and lighting needs to
do well together. Lettuce sprouts quickly; cilantro, not so much.
You have to understand what the different seeds/plants need. The
"foolproof" products that cost a fortune are for people who don't
want to have to learn how to garden.
Now, all that said, I think rock wool cubes would work better than
the little grow sponges that come with the Power Plant, and I
happen to have plenty of those from my last hydroponics experiment.
I would start seedlings in the cubes in a seed-starting tray (an
old meat tray, perhaps), or maybe a makeshift lettuce-raft type
hydroponics setup, then move the strongest plants into the Power
Plant when they are ready to really take off. But I have to say
that the design of the little pods that hold the plants looks
PERFECT for just buying some small herb plants, washing the soil
off the roots very well, and trimming them down to work the roots
through the holders, sans sponges. That's what I'm going to do with
my next batch of plants so I've always got fresh herbs growing in
my kitchen.
This is NOT a good product for seed-starting and then transplating
the plants to another area. That's what you save your styrofoam
meat trays, old cut-up toilet paper rolls, and paper cups for. It's
for kitchen herbs and lettuces, maybe strawberries. Green garlic
might do nicely in this unit.
I do very much like the way the Prepara Power Plant is designed,
and I LOVE the sound of the water running inside of it. It's got
all the charm of a feng shui water feature but with the
functionality of being able to grow fresh edibles. It fits neatly
on my countertop, and the clean lines are quite appealing.
A word of warning: if you have cats in the house, they are going to
be absolutely fascinated by the sound of the water inside the Power
Plant. They are going to be constantly sneaking up to it and biting
off the heads of your young plants when you aren't looking. Don't
expect much growth from the Prepara Power Plant if you have cats in
your house. But, still, it's a hoot to watch. And if you really
want to have a good time, put some catnip plants in your Prepara
Power Plant. Multiple trips for multiple cats....

(More customer reviews)This is truly a
"whisper quiet" heater that is great for the period just before the
winter and probably during early spring. It works very well, and
increases the room temperature quickly enough. It is not meant to
be the main heater but it is great as a secondary and fast heating
device. Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)I bought one of
these for my mother for Christmas. Years ago I had gotten her a
Black&Decker cup-at-a-time coffeemaker and it finally gave up
last year. The only cup-at-a-time coffeemaker at a reasonable price
I could find locally was by Toastess. The Toastess paled in
comparison to the Black&Decker, not only in build quality but
in ease of use. My mother suffers from a neurological disorder
which makes it difficult to coordinate the use of her hands; she is
okay with general tasks, but nothing which requires fine
manipulation. This Black&Decker coffeemaker, like the model
before, is easy to use. The power switch is on the front and a
little larger than several coffeemakers switches; you just have to
push down on it. There is nothing to move out of the way when
filling the reservoir; just lift the lid. The reservoir is also a
little wider than the Toastess making it easier to fill. Of course,
one of the safety features, which the Toastess model also lacks, is
the automatic shut-off. When it is finished making a cup of coffee,
and it is fast, it just shuts off, which is great for someone who
keeps forgetting to turn off their coffeemaker. The only issue I
can see that someone may have, and niggling at that, is that this
unit cannot hold tall coffee mugs. All of my mother's coffee mugs
fit, which is a lesser concern for me, however, than its ease of
use and safety, at which this Black&Decker excels.--Bob
