One way in which salsa is just like walking is that when you're
walking, you don't step with the same foot twice. The same goes for
salsa
dancing. You heard me. Don't step with the same foot twice.
Huh? Ok, let me explain. When you walk, you go from one foot to the
next, right? Whew. Good. So, as you're walking, you're stepping
with your left foot and then with your right foot. Or, you could
step with your right foot and then with your left foot. The point
here is that as you step, you are switching feet (and
simultaneously shifting your weight and balance on those legs).
At least in the beginning, salsa should be no different. When
starting with the
basic salsa dance step, try not to step with the
same foot twice. Try stepping with the same foot twice as you walk.
Did you do it? Feels weird right? Yea, I agree, it does. In fact,
it looks weird too. You don't want to look weird while you're
dancing do you? Well, in my opinion, if you're having fun on the
dance floor, but you're looking weird, well that's quite alright
with me, but that's food for thought for another day. For more
reasons than one, generally, you should NOT be stepping with the
same foot twice when starting out as a beginner.
But really, there are exceptions to the general rule. For example,
if you were learning how to do Rueda or Casino style salsa (the
group form of dance where there's a circle, a caller, and the
continual switching of partners), one of the things you would learn
is how to do a tap. A tap is but one example (of many) as to when a
dancer steps with the same foot twice. In this situation, the
placement of the foot on the initial step doesn't count as an
official step because there hasn't been a complete weight shift on
that foot. But remember, while these exceptions to the rules exist,
you are a beginner and, again, in my opinion, you shouldn't
necessarily be so much focused on the exceptions but rather on the
general rules themselves. Then, once you've mastered the standards,
you can branch out and even create your own set of rules or
standards. So, for now, just remember, don't step with the same
foot twice.

DON’T GIVE UP! Learning to dance takes time and
work for most of us, and it includes some evenings when you feel
you’ll never improve and when almost no one will dance with you.
But if you keep learning, by taking dance classes or private
lessons or even learning from
dance videos, drilling the fundamentals and
practicing, and getting out there social dancing, you will most
likely master the dance and come to enjoy the results of all that
work: the joy of dancing well and being able to dance with many
different partners.
That is basically one of the secrets of
learning and mastering dancing, never quit and always strive to succeed
in the end you can have the stage.

All of the salsa dance steps are composed of the basic
steps. It is critical that you learn them well enough that
they become automatic, learn them from your salsa dance
classes or salsa dance videos.
Here’s an easy way to tell if you know the
basic dance steps: While you are dancing with your partner,
can
you hold a conversation and complete all of the
basics steps? If so, you are ready to learn the
intermediate steps.
A structured salsa lesson may consist of 6 weeks Basics 1,
6 weeks of Basics 2, and at least 3 months of Intermediate
before moving on to advanced salsa steps.
One way to build up and fine tune your skills is to go out
to the clubs. It doesn’t matter if you just know a few
moves. Women will enjoy dancing with you as long as you do
the moves well!
While you progress, please remember that salsa is not just
a bunch of steps and patterns. It is a dance of passion,
where you feel and dance to the music. Sure.. rhythm and
timing are important, but the real part of the dance comes
from within.
SO, what are you waiting for? Go get your salsa dance
lessons now, salsa classes are great but if you’re a little
shy you can go with salsa
dance videos ,Get it today, and be dancing the salsa
tomorrow!
