UNESCO selected the Brihadisvara Temple as a World Heritage Site in
the year 1987; the Temple of Gangaikonda cholapuram and the
Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram had been included as extensions
to the Great Living Chola Temples World Heritage Site in 2004.

The suggestion of World Heritage site was initiated by United
States with merging cultural conservation and nature conservation.
On 16th November 1972, a single text was approved by all
participants, and the General Conference of UNESCO adopted the
Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and
Natural Heritage. There are four heritage sites in Tamil
