I don't get it. What does the OT mean to today's Bible believers?

When an atheist mentions the atrocities committed in the OT, the Christian response usually dismisses it as being of a different time with different circumstances. I'm trying to figure a few things. Is the OT taken literally like the NT? Is it not the same God that "lives" today? If it doesn't count, why is it in the Bible? Sorry, that's getting wordy, so I'll leave it at that. I hope you understand my confusion as I wasn't brought up with this book.

The other day I asked the Christians to try to explain this verse, and then gave them a warning, they just could not come up with any excuses to defend this after I wrote the comments below. Exodus Chapter 21, verse 20: If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property. (Not only does God condone slavery, but he is also completely comfortable with the concept of beating your slaves, as long as you don't kill them. ) WARNING CHRISTIANS!!!!! IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE "BUT THAT IS THE OLD TESTAMENT , IT DOES NOT APPLY TO US" READ HERE: 1. IF IT DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU ANYMORE, WHY THEN DO YOU FOLLOW THE 10 COMMANDMENTS,THOSE ARE TAKEN RIGHT OUT OF THE OLD TESTAMENT. HOW COME THOSE ARE STILL VALID? PICK AND CHOOSE RIGHT? 2.IF THE OLD TESTAMENT IS THE WORD OF GOD, AND IT IS PERFECT, WHY DOES THIS GOD CHANGE HIS MIND? 3. IF WE WERE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT TIME, ARE YOU THEN TELLING ME THAT IT WOULD BE OK TO OWN AND BEAT A SLAVE, AND YOU PROBABLY WOULD BE BEATING ONE? ..THAT WAS A GOD'S LAW, IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE THE NEW TESTAMENT CHANGED THAT SICKNESS, IT WAS YOUR GOD'S LAW, NOT ONLY CONDONES SLAVERY BUT ALSO ALLOWED BEATING OF SLAVES!!!!!! YOUR OLD TESTAMENT EXCUSE IS OUT!
