Secrets to Dog Training by Kingdom of Pets, is the "Bible" of dog training. Puppy training problems are addressed throughout this dog training guide. It also features comprehensive coverage of House and Obedience Training, Aggressive Dog Issues, and Advanced Dog Training.

Puppy Training Problems - Correcting Puppy Biting

One of the most annoying puppy training problems is biting. Puppies bite when you pet them. They bite when you play with them. They bite everyone. It's what they do. And if you don't stop them when they are young puppies, you'll have a dog biting problem. Picture a ten month old Eskimo dog (technically still a puppy) with a full set of wolf-like teeth. This dog bit his owner as if she were his litter mate. The poor woman had bruises and scars all over her arms and hands. It was an episode of It's Me Or The Dog with Victoria Stilwell. See Victoria Stilwell training tips. My older puppy Alvin (8 months) is way over biting and mouthing. That's him in the picture. His teeth are pearly white and made for ripping food, not my skin.  His brother Simon (4 months) still occasionally treats his owners like litter mates. What do we do when he bites one of us? No, we don't yip like a hurt dog, although that's one of the suggestions for overcoming this behavior, probably the most common of the puppy training problems. See the section entitled "Biting and Mouthing Correction" for the solution to this problem, a tip I picked up from a certified dog trainer and combined it with the info I got on Secrets To Dog Training and other references named in a separate section.

Puppy House Training Schedule - Housetraining Is Impossible Without One

You've just brought a new puppy or dog into your family (that's my new pup Simon in the picture). Have you decided how to approach house training? If you want to get the pup trained as soon as possible, start thinking about a puppy house training schedule. You can't schedule everything, but you can set up basic activities and times when the (elimination) activities will occur. Getting To The Ultimate Goal Believe it or not, a schedule will minimize accidents. The greater the number of accidents, the longer it will take to arrive at the ulimate goal - a housebroken pup. Unfortunately, even if you're the best scheduler ever, you can't anticipate everything, For example, new puppies don't pee and poop on your schedule every time. When the pup is circling your new living room rug,he's most likely not following the schedule. House Training Activities You Can Schedule You can create a puppy house training schedule based on the fact that you can anticipate he will eliminate as follows: When he gets up in the morning. After he eats. After a nap (they are predictable). After he plays or exercises for more than a few minutes Before he goes to sleep for the night. Depending on his age, he'll need to go out at night several times. The formula for the number of hours between outings is (puppy age in months plus 1) hours. A 2-month old pup will go out about every 3 hours over night. Don't be alarmed, this is only a guideline. A Few Tips You will adjust your puppy house training schedule as the puppy matures and can control his eliminations. Supposedly a puppy is ready about 16 weeks of age. At this point, you may notice that he sleeps through the night and doesn't need to go outside as often.  If you fail to adjust the timing for outings as the pup learns to hold his eliminations, you will need to gradually lengthen the amount of time beween outings OR let the pup tell you when it's time. My other dog Alvin barks when he needs to go out. Simon learned to ring a bell or sometimes just stands by the door. There have been a few presents on the rug in front of the door while dinner was being made.

More Crate Training Tips - 5 BIG Mistakes You CAN Correct

Many crate training tips are about what NOT to do in certain situations. The BEST crate training tips are how to fix screw-ups. Because You KNOW they're going to happen! By the way, these screw-ups are your fault. Man up (or woman up) and take responsibility. Don't blame the dog - either you were ignorant about using the crate, you waited too long, or you made the wrong decision. You can recover from your mistakes and learn the appropriate crate training protocol. Major Crate Training Screw-ups Here are some screw-ups that will be discussed in the sections of this lens. Not to worry - the crate training tips to fix them will be discussed also. 1. The puppy peed or pooped in the crate. Ain't it wonderful to find a crate present! 2. The puppy refuses to get into the crate. I've got little dogs, so can't imagine trying to force a 50 pound unwilling puppy into a small enclosure. 3. You went out for a few hours and your living room, kitchen, bathroom, family, room, or garage is a candidate for hurricane relief a la Marley. If you left a young puppy unattended, uncrated, and free to roam, you don't deserve ANY relief money. 4. You use the crate as a form of punishment. Bad mistake! 5. The puppy's crated all day and all night. Why DID you get a puppy?

How Caring for Your Cockapoo Puppy or Dog Differs from Caring for Other Dog Breeds

Selecting a puppy or dog as a companion for you and your family is a very important decision. Your dog will be your companion for a LONG time so select carefully. And if you want a handsome, smart, family dog with the added advantage of minimal shedding and practically allery-free, Cockapoo puppies and dogs make an outstanding choice.See The Best Designer Dogs - Cockapoos: http://www.squidoo.com/designerpuppys If you think that caring for Cockapoo puppies and dogs is the same as caring for any other breed, please reconsider. Cockapoo dogs have requirements specific to their mix of Cocker Spaniel and Poodle. This fact prompted me to write an ebook about Raising Cockapoo Dogs the Right Way. And that's the subject of this lens - why YOU need to find out about the specific needs of the Cockapoo puppy or dog you are buying and bringing home to your family.

Correcting Dog Behavior Problems - Chewing

The motivation for this lens began with Sir Simon The Sad, my oh-so-handsome but oh-so-destructive Cockapoo. During a recent binge he chewed the cord to my new laptop IN HALF. He also chewed through two lamp cords, both of which were unplugged from the wall socket (thank you very much to whoever is looking over this pup). Also, there's the PC mouse and cell phone that we plucked from his mouth just before total destruction. He's also a thief, so he's stolen and chewed up newspapers, plastic bags, credit and playing cards. Even when we put things (seemingly) out of his reach, all it takes is a distracted family member, and a new chewing binge begins. Obviously, we weren't paying attention! And we thought - what else can we do to get him to chew on his own stuff? We turned to the trusted source for correcting dog behavior problems - Secrets To Dog Training by Kingdom of Pets - the dog training "bible." The material for this lens is courtesy of Kingdom of Pets who know a lot about this topic!

Top Ten Best Gifts for Dog Lovers

Dog Lovers are an interesting group of people. They talk about their dogs as if they were children. When you buy a gift for a dog lover, it's usually for the dog. But then the gift also helps the owner. An example - you know a dog lover whose animal is afraid of its own shadow. And the dog's especially afraid of thunderstorms. This dog is a prime example of anxiety in dogs. The perfect gift for your dog lover friend is the Thundershirt, my #1 choice for the top ten list of gifts for dog lovers. Sir Arf-A-Lot's Thundershirt After hearing from a friend who got her Westie to stop barking maniacally using the Thundershirt, I bought one for Sir Arf-a-Lot (Alvin), the peaceful looking dog pictured above. It's like anti-anxiety medication - calms him immediately. Thundershirt Reviews The reviews for this product are overwhelmingly positive. It comforts an animal by swaddling him and providing gentle compression. The occasional scaredy dog will run away from the sound of velcro pulling apart. Because velcro holds the Thundershirt together, the scraredy dog may not ever get swaddled in one. And that's the dog that really needs the product! The Origin of the Top Ten List Like the Thundershirt, the gifts in the top ten list are items that I've used or friends have used successfully, or are bestselling, convenient, or in at least one case - whimsical.

Puppy Crate Training Tips

There's controversy surrounding the use of crates to house train dogs. Some people just cannot understand why you would isolate an animal for extended periods of time. But if you use these crate training tips to your advantage, your puppy will actually enjoy the confinement and seek out the crate to snooze in. AND he will not be "imprisoned" for long time frames. What's the Point of the Crate? Crates come in various sizes and should be selected based on the anticipated adult height and weight of the dog. The crate shown above is a deluxe wire crate. A crate serves as the puppy's den - his sleeping area and place of refuge. His getaway from the poking and prodding of family members. Tip #1 One of the more important crate training tips is to ensure slow introduction to his crate by using treats. Lure your pup into the crate with a series of strategically placed treats. At first, he may enter the crate and then bolt out of it after eating the treat. So lure him into the crate frequently. Or use a favorite toy as a lure. Tip #2 NEVER force a puppy into his crate. Done repeatedly, this action can create a negative association with the crate. Read on for more valuable tips. They were compiled from various internet sources, the Kingdom of Pets House Training references cited throughout this lens, and from my personal experience with two Cockapoo puppies.

Designerpuppys Dog and Puppy Training Lensography

Wow! I've written many lenses and a blog about the two wonderful pups I brought into my life about 3 years ago. The blog alone has close to 200 posts (http://designerpuppys.blogspot.com). Both the lenses and the blog posts are generated from real experience with Cockapoos Alvin and Simon (The BOYZ). They provide new adventures just about every day - from house training to obedience training to preventing the two of them from digging to China or stealing socks from the laundry basket. So you know the subject of the lenses in this lensography - I've included a group picture of the BOYZ (yes I do take a lot of pictures) as well as individual favorites. In the group picture shown here, Alvin is on the right. And they are hams - they know how to pose for pictures. Alvin plays to the camera, as you'll see in my videos contained within lenses in this lensography. In case you're thinking about the BOYZ's names - Theodore has not entered the picture. At least not yet! Feel free to browse. The Ten Most Popular Posts of My Cockapoo Dog Blog

My Cockapoo dog blog - http://blogspot.com/designerpuppys - started as a simple documentary about my two mixed breed puppies Alvin and Simon (no Theodore in sight). Collectively, they are The Boyz. During the past three years, I've written almost 200 posts, shot hundreds of photos, and written several ebooks. A simple documentary has turned into a labor of love. Before The Boyz' arrival, I forgot how attached you can get to your dogs. They're much more than pets - they're fiercely protected family members. Okay, this lens was not meant to be gushy, but as an experience the reader can relate to. Frankly, the material I've created is useful, sometimes intended to be funny, and every once in a while - opinionated. What's life without an occasional controversy?

Five Lies About Housetraining Your Puppy

When you're housetraining your puppy, many people will tell you that crate training is cruel. According to these people, a crate is a dog prison.  And they're right about one thing, if you housetrain your puppy by imprisoning him for 18 hours a day, it is cruel. And you could set back housetraining by weeks or even months. But when used correctly, a crate is an effective TOOL for housetraining your puppy. Why A Crate Is A Positive Housetraining Tool A crate is a puppy den, similar to the concept of a wolf's den. A crate is a puppy refuge. A crate is a comfortable area for overnight sleeping. And most important of all, a healthy puppy will not mess in his crate if he's kept in it for a reasonable amount of time (puppy age in months plus one hour is the maximum amount of time).

Top Ten Reasons Why Goughnuts Green .75 is the Best Small Dog Chew Toy

In general, goughnuts are manufactured and advertised as dog chew toys. Dogs cannot make a dent in these doughnut shaped hard rubbery feeling toys. The green version is for ordinary chewers. The black version was made for EXTREME chewers. And there is a small version of goughnuts green called Goughnuts Green .75 for smaller dogs (dogettes). The picture shows my small dog Alvin with the Goughnuts Green .75 he's been chewing and playing with for more than two years. He's the reason we got Goughnuts - because he destroys every ordinary toy in minutes. On to the reasons why Goughnuts Green .75 is the best small dog chew toy . . .

Correct Dog Behavior Problems - Barking

The Problem Puppy The idea behind this lens started when Sir Simon The Sad, the Cockapoo in the picture to the left, went through surgery for a trick knee. (See http://www.squidoo.com/luxating-patella). By the 5th week of his 6-week recovery period, this once docile, sweet puppy turned into a whining, barking monster. His forced inactivity resulted in boredom and pent-up energy. The major change (the surgery and recovery period) definitely caused his dog behavior problems. At the same time, his playmate Alvin started barking at everything and anyone. Household members' nerves were definitely on edge. A chaotic household is more than a little unacceptable. The author turned to Secrets To Dog Training by Kingdom of Pets - the dog training bible - for solutions. The material for this lens is courtesy of Kingdom of Pets who clearly know a lot about how to correct dog behavior problems. Wholesale Pet Supplies

The cost of supplies can be overwhelming when you bring a puppy or dog into your home. To make life easier AND less expensive, the author compiled a list of required supplies and investigated wholesale dog supplies. Please take advantage of the discounts offered online! This list is based on the experience of raising two puppies within a year's time. There were many lessons learned; they are shared in this lens. The following is the list of wholesale dog supplies a new dog owner will need as soon as possible. Many of these supplies will be one-time purchases while others will be purchased periodically (food). Most can be bought online at a wholesale pet supplies "store." When you bring a new dog into your family, you need these supplies (at a minimum): * Puppy Food * Crate * Gates * Toys * Leash And Collar * Carrier * Dog Deodorizer/Neutralizer Obviously, there are other items you might need, but these are the basics. Once this list is handled, you're prepared for the puppy/dog. Now, the question is - Where do you get these items so you don't break the bank? For the answers to this question - check out the remainder of this lens . . . OR Click on any one of the items on the list above.

Solving Puppy Training Problems

Solving puppy training problems - from crate training issues to aggressive dog behavior - has been the author's focus over the past few years. Does that make the author an expert? No, but it has provided excellent sources for both puppy housetraining, puppy obedience training, and dog aggression issues. Bottom line - the author NOW knows what works and what doesn't. And so will you - IF you stick with what this lens discusses and check out at least the recommended sources of information. The Training Subjects . . . The trainees are the two pups pictured above. Details about these pups can be found at squidoo.com/designerpuppys and The BOYS Blog at http://designerpuppys.blogspot.com. The Topics The three training topics that most frustrate puppy owners are as follows: 1. Housetraining (or housebreaking) 2. Obedience Training (Puppy Obedience Commands) 3. Aggression In this lens, you will find sources of EXPERT information on each of these topics, including a major recommendation for each area and an overall recommendation . One thing you need to know - puppy obedience training, done correctly, minimizes the occurrence of aggression issues. One of my pups has shown one aggression issue - puppy biting. This is easy to correct once you know the correction procedure. See this lens for more information on how to stop puppy biting: http://www.squidoo.com/puppy-training-problems. The other puppy, although he was trained for obedience, was the first training subject. He occaisionally will exhibit aggression in the form of growling when you attempt to move him when he's been asleep. There is a vet-recommended correction for this problem also. See more information on this topic below.
