Cervical cancer is one of the common diseases throughout the
world and many women die from it each year. In Uganda, more
than a quarter million women die from cervical cancer. The
disease caused due to human papillomavirus (HPV), where some
specific strains of the virus causes it to happen. Vaccines
like Gardasil and Cervarix were found to be effective against
the cancer.
Studies have also revealed that circumcision in men also reduce
cases of cervical cancer in women, as men undergoing
circumcision are less likely to transmit HPV causing
cervical cancer to women during sexual
intercourse.
In United States, 55 to 65 percent of new born boys are
circumcised, but the rate differs from one region to another
within the country. This procedure is extensively followed in
Canada, United States and the Middle East, when compared to
Africa, Asia, Central America, South America and the Europe.
Steps should be taken to increase practice of circumcision in
Africa, as this would significantly reduce one of the deadly
sexual transmitted diseases (STD) in Africa. Even if one tests
positive for cervical cancer, test and treatment should be
carried out in order to recover from the disease soon. Pap
smear is the common test to check for presence of cancerous
cells in the cervix of women.
Cervical cancer vaccines are mostly
effective in reducing the STD, but circumcision in men would
further reduce chances of contracting the disease. This way it
would be helpful in eradicating the deadly disease from almost
every corners of the world.

HPV vaccines are used to prevent the human papillomavirus (HPV)
that causes cervical cancer in millions of women, but the use
of these vaccines have been limited. Researchers claim the HPV
vaccines are always an emotional subject that can confuse
parents of the teenagers, but researchers are confused about
unpopularity factor of the vaccines.
This year about 493,000 women will be
diagnosed with cervical cancer, and 274,000
are expected to die from it. The situation is alarming but
tendency of the people not to go for the vaccines is more
surprising.
Gardasil vaccine is being used for
cervical cancer treatment, and United States
Food and Drug Administration even approved it to be used for
girls and women aged between 9 and 26, but it was found that
most people undergoing vaccines does not complete the doses,
and some even don’t care about taking it.
Some view, that increasing price of the vaccine may be one
factor for limited use, as each of these costs $360 to $600.
Other factors like irregularity of the physicians and attitude
of parents towards the vaccines are also responsible for low
use. Still, parents and their children require more knowledge
and awareness about the benefits of these vaccines.
Young girls and women often don’t take the HPV seriously, for
they think the virus is not any way linked to cervical cancer.
Its’ vital parents are made to think about the future health of
their wards, and convince them to encourage their children to
know more about the disease and its side effects.

Cervical cancer is considered to be curable, but according to
the latest report, the number of cases in Southern California
is higher when compared to National average in United States.
In United States, the cervical cancer rate is 8.1 per 100,000
people, where as in Los Angeles County it stands at 10 per
100,000 people.
Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, and
ranks 13
th among cancer deaths in the U.S. Women in
Los Angeles County are more concerned about their threat from
cervical cancer than other diseases. The high rate can be
attributed to fact that,
cervical cancer screening has not attained
ninety percent target, and many women are still devoid of
getting the Pap smear test that is essential to detect presence
of cancerous cells in the cervix region. Screening test are
significantly less among low income group women and those who
are less educated.
Screening test for cervical cancer for women should be done on
regular basis, to identify the human papillomavirus (HPV) which
is said to be main reason for the disease. Treatment should be
done at perfect time to recover from the disease otherwise it
can lead to death. Sexually active women are more prone to
these diseases as well as other sexual transmitted disease
(STD). Some popular
cervical cancer vaccinations are Gardasil
and Cervarix.

A new health campaign called ‘Mission Possible’ is started in
Vermont to provide free
cervical cancer screening test and HPV
vaccinations to boys and girls, for a period of six months.
Given the rise of cervical cancer cases throughout the world,
there is more need of such healthcare programmes that would
benefit common people. These steps are vital to aware more
people about the deadly disease.
The HPV vaccine has been very effective in preventing cervical
cancer cases in 70 percent of the population. The Health
Department buys these vaccines at $360 and then distributes it
free to the providers.
Cervical cancer can be deadly, but if
screening and treatment is done early, it can be fully cured.
The HPV vaccine
acts against specific strains of the HPV (Human papilloma
virus) causing cervical cancer. Cervical cancer screening test
encompasses detection of cancerous cells in the cervix. Common
test are Pap smear test and the new cytology test. If tested
positive, one must undergo immediate treatment to prevent
further progression of the disease.
Through this immunization programme, health department provides
vaccines in age group 9 to 26. The vaccine is given to girls
aged 12 and above. It is recommended that women, who usually
have high chance of suffering from cervical cancer, should
undergo screening on regular basis.
There is a significant rise in cervical cancer cases in U.S
with more women dying from it, than any other form of cancer.
In recent years other similar non-profit based organizations
like ‘Ground for Health’ in Vermont also provides cervical
cancer screening and treatment, and people benefit lot from
it.

Girls having cervical cancer jab need cervical cancer screening
twice in their lifetime. This is good news with respect to
reduction of cervical cancer. According to experts several
cervical cancer vaccines used for treatment may ultimately reduce
the occurrence of
cervical cancer in humans. The current smear test,
which is popular among women for cervical cancer screening is
soon to be replaced by HPV test. Earlier pap smear test is done
every three or five years, but the new HPV test is more effective
in detecting cancerous cells than pap. Young girls aged 12 or 13
having jab need cervical cancer testing at the age of 30 to 45.
Cervical cancer vaccines
are used to protect the body against key strains of human papilloma
virus (HPV) known to cause most of the cervical cancer cases. HPV
test is capable of identifying 13 strains responsible for all
cervical cancer cases. The virus gradually spreads into the body
and it may take as long as 10 years for cancer to develop. HPV test
is much reliable and effective for cervical cancer as
it captures everything. Vaccinated women need to be screened at the
age of 30 and 45. In UK, HPV testing is still under consideration
but could be used nationally by 2015. Expert belief that HPV
testing would reduce the amount of cervical cancer cases in
UK.

Scientists are researching to develop a 30 second screening test
for Alzheimer’s disease, which would prove beneficial in
identifying cause before the disease show any symptoms.
This type of
health screening is specifically developed for
people in 40s, which prevent people from the disease. The test is
simple so that it would be available anywhere, just as people avail
blood pressure check. The objective of the test is to identify
those areas of brain which are damaged and are at an increased risk
of developing Alzheimer disease in future. Thus through this
screening, early detection is possible and hence prevention of the
disease at right time. People who are prone to dementia could
easily prevent the disease.
Currently tests are based on brain scanning and memory tests, but
often detection is too late for prevention. The new research has
found a unique way to scan the brain using computer programs where
patient reaction times are recorded. Researchers studied the brain
of healthy men and women aged 44 to 48 for search of tiny lesions
in the brain. The lesions are similar to those that are found after
post mortem of Alzheimer patient. Those with small lesions in the
brain had both slow and fast reaction times compared to healthy
brains which showed more consistent responses.
The
health
screening test for Alzheimer disease is a surefire way of
preventing and reducing the disease to large extent. People with
erratic symptoms can easily move to the hospital or clinic for test
and start treatment as necessary.

According to a report in UK some of the ethnic groups shun
themselves from
cervical cancer vaccine. Mothers from the
minority group do not want vaccine for daughters to prevent from
the deadly HPV (human papilloma virus) responsible for cervical
cancer deaths in large numbers.
The vaccine is very much effective in UK in treating girls aged
12 to 13 with cervical cancer cases. A survey was conducted by
University College London, where questions were set for 750 women
from Caribbean, China, Africa, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and
200 British women, to assess the knowledge of HPV and their
vaccination. It was surprising that 6 to 18 percent of women in
minority ethnic group have never heard of HPV. Out of 601 women
who have daughters, 62 percent confirmed they have not used any
vaccine compared to 38 percent who permitted vaccine for
daughters.
The acceptance of
cervical cancer vaccine also differed from one
ethnic group to another, as it was mostly used by white women
with 63 percent followed by 51 percent of African, 49 percent by
Caribbean, 40 percent by Chinese and the rest with lower percent.
What revealed through study was culture and religion has an
important role to play when it comes to cervical cancer
vaccination. But most importantly lack of knowledge and
information has shed these groups from vaccines. Some fear that
vaccine is harmful or other belief that it would lead to early
sexual encounter.

The 8 types of HPV virus are identified that is known to cause
most cervical cancer cases around the world. Scientist undergoing
research claimed that they explored the types of virus that is
known to cause 90 percent of
cervical cancer cases and this would prove
beneficial in developing the next generation drugs for protection
against this cancer.
Some of the renowned drug makers like GlaxoSmithKline and Merck
& Co. already developed specific vaccines against HPV strains
causing cervical cancer. Cervical cancer stands among worlds
second most widespread cancer responsible for 328,000 deaths this
year.
Research was conducted based on 60 years of data collected from
38 countries on 10,575 cases of cervical cancer, through which
major types of HPV strains was identified that cause invasive
cervical cancer. Mainly eight HPV types, i.e. 16, 18,
45, 33, 31, 52, 58, and 35 are
said to cause 90 percent of cervical cancer cases.
Cervarix and Gardasil protect against HPV strains 16 and 18. Girls are vaccinated with HPV
vaccines before they indulge in sexual intercourse to prevent this
STD. The vaccines are mostly used in rich countries
compared to poorer countries where they find it too expensive to
use. Report suggests that 80 percent of cervical cancer occurs in
most of the developing countries and that happens due to
transmission of highly infected HPV through sexual
acts.

Colposcopy is a
cervical cancer test in which the cervix
undergoes examination at the time of smear test. A
colposcope is a big magnifying glass that is
used to examine outer surface of the cervix. It meticulously
examines skin of the cervix. Doctor or nurses use colposcopy to
detect abnormalities in the cells that are not visible through
naked eye.
A biopsy
of suspected area is done by the doctors.
Women don’t need to worry, for the test is painless. The only
thing that makes some women uncomfortable is the position that is
needed for examination, but once accustomed you will not
experience any problem.
Colposcopy is usually done by local community hospital or
outpatient clinic. The posture for this test is similar to one
for smear test where you have to lie down on the couch with your
legs up and apart. If patient have problem in that position then
doctor recommend that you lie on the side with knees drawn up,
and then test is conducted.
A speculum is used by doctor or nurse to make space in the
vagina. And then colopscope is used to monitor surface of the
cervix. The whole test is conducted in about 20 minutes. For
local biopsies, anesthesia is required and injected into the
cervix. The test is simple and patient can return back to normal
life soon after the test is over.
If abnormality is found in the area, treatment could be initiated
at that point of time only. The advantage is that, you won’t have
to go through another appointment for treatment or wait in queue
for your turn to come.
During treatment, area of the cervix is removed where abnormal
cell growth has taken place. This is referred to as Large Loop Excision
of the Transformation Zone. This is the most common and popular
type of cervical cancer treatment in UK and many people prefer to
go through this. The treatment is very simple and meted out
quickly under local anesthesia. Doctors get a clean tissue sample
to examine the patient.

Cone Biopsy is a simple surgery done in order to remove abnormal
cells in the cervix region for patient
suffering from cervical cancer. Local
Anesthesia is done for the purpose and you need to stay in
hospital overnight. Under local anesthesia doctor takes out a
cone of tissue from the cervix region for test. The cone of
tissue may contain cancerous cells, for that it is taken to lab
to examine under powerful microscope.
After the cone biopsy is over, some gauze is inserted into the
vagina in case there is bleeding. Since the gauze is packed, you
should also have tube attached to your bladder to help in
urination. The tube is referred to as catheter. The catheter is
the best technique to pass out urine from your body. The gauze
pack is taken out before you are discharged from hospital. A
patient may undergo bleeding for four months after the operation.
Sometimes bleeding can be reduced or stopped through the use of a
drug called tranexamic acid and vasopressin. After the biopsy
you could experience some pain typically same as that of period
pain. If you experience intense pain, you can ask doctor or nurse
to give painkillers to you. But no need to worry as the pain
resides within few hours.
After
this cervical cancer treatment you need complete
rest for one week. It’s not necessary that always to lie on bed,
but avoid strenuous activities or carrying heavy loads.
Talk to a relative
or friend who can help you out during this period. Don’t indulge
in sexual activity particularly sexual intercourse for at least 4
to 6 six weeks after cervical cancer surgery. Let the cervix heal
during this time.
Consult
your doctor for guidance on how to care for yourself after cone
biopsy. Doctors may prescribe some solution and increase self
confidence if you are afraid that something might go
wrong.

Cervical cancer vaccines are an effective way to
treat the virus that causes cervical cancers. Each year nearly
11,000 women are affected by the virus in United States. Cervical
cancer stands second among the most significant death causes in
women. Cervical cancer is curable if treatment is done at proper
time. A pap smear test is an effective way to test presence of
cancerous cells in cervix that leads to cervical cancer.
HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is the main cause of disease and it is
through vaccination that you get rid of some of cancer causing
strains in HPV.
Cervical cancer vaccination should be done by girls
in the age group of 12. The vaccination can also be started from 9.
The idea is to vaccinate the body before exposure to sexual
contact, but it is also recommended that sexually active women
should get vaccinated up to age of 26.
Women at younger age should start vaccinations, reason being that
the vaccines are more effective for those women who have not been
exposed to specific HPV causing cervical cancer. The vaccines are
injected in thigh or arm in three phases. Second vaccination is
given 1-2 months after the first and the last six months after
first.
The vaccines are easily available with any of the health care
provider. If you are tested positive in pap smear test, then
treatment should be initiated along with vaccines taken at regular
intervals. It is recommended that vaccines should be taken at the
perfect schedule without making any delays.

According to new guidelines, women should steer away from
cervical cancer test until 21, and screening
done after that should be done in lesser numbers. This piece of
advice came from American College of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists, who suggests
this, may reduce unnecessary testing and harmful treatment in
younger generation. The group suggested that women should undergo
test after three years of sexual intercourse, provided age is
greater than 21.
The objective is also to reduce
the mammography test, with larger emphasis on slashing cancer
screening in women. According to Chairman of the group, these
plans have long been under considerations, even before Obama
declared the health plan.
The recommendations for pap test
is much more serious than mammography. When young women test
positive for cervical cancer, doctors remove abnormal
growth of cancerous cells which can lead to injury of cervix and
reproductive problems in case the women becomes pregnant.
Premature birth and caesarean operation are the associated
reproductive problems.
The decision has led to debate
even in some health sectors and may create quite a political
furor in Washington. Some believe that pap test is essential for
young women who are sexually active.
In United States alone 4070 deaths happen each year due
to cervical cancer. The reduced occurrence of cancer among girls
between 15 and 19 has led many doctors to believe that it is safe
to conduct the test after 21.

Treatment for
cervical cancer entered a new phase, when a
new DNA test performed better than pap test in cervical cancer
patients. Experts believe that soon it may replace the Pap smear
test in developed countries. The new test for HPV (human
papilloma virus) would not only save lives but it could reduce
the count of pap smear test for women above the age of 30. What
more interesting is, DNA test is required once in three, five or
ten years as compared to pap test which is done annually. Experts
agree to the fact that the test would go long way in reducing
cervical cancer deaths among women.
But gynecologists are wary of implementing DNA test by removing
the pap test, as pap has proved to be a boon to many women for
years. According to a report, there has been great reduction in
cervical cancer deaths in America as it now kills less than 4,000
per year which is far less than what it was in 1950.
The implications of DNA
test may differ from poorer to richer countries. While many in
poorer countries still not able to get test done, and taken to
hospital when it’s too late. In West, women undergo smear in which
cells are taken from cervix and sent to laboratory, where
inspection and assessment take long time.
