Increase in Alcohol may Reduce Type-2 Diabetes

If you have habit of consuming alcohol daily, that may be good news for you as far as diabetes is concerned. According to the latest research, small doses of alcohol can decrease the risk of Type 2 diabetes in men. But obviously drinking should be of limited amount, as the study suggests it is favorable to only light drinkers.

Those men who have increased consumption of alcohol are at greater risk of suffering from Type-2 diabetes. A study was conducted on 428,497 patients for years out of which 1905 cases of Type-2 diabetes occurred in them. Men who have the habit of drinking 15 g/day, an increase of 7.5 g/day over a period of 4 years led to the decrease of diabetes up to a percent of 11 percent. For non drinkers it was 22 percent.

After consumption of alcohol, the level of glycated hemoglobin and total adiponectin increased which was beneficial for reduction of diabetes.

But the result was reverse for those persons who drank more than 15 g/day and increased their intake by 7.5 g/day, and they have also no improvement in the HbA1c levels in the body.

The findings of these results suggest that limited amount of alcohol is no doubt better in reducing the extent of Type-2 Diabetes in men, but excessive consumption could also lead to enhancement of the disease. It’s better to abstain from the alcohol drinking habits, as sometimes smaller consumption can increase the habit of greater intake of alcohol.

Glucose Test for Diabetes

Glucose test is performed to measure amount of glucose in the blood, and helps to detect hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia for the diagnosis of diabetes in persons. Blood glucose level is either measured while fasting or after a meal. A series of glucose tests is performed known as OGTT, where a fasting glucose is tested, and then the patient is given a glucose solution and then tested. After this a series of glucose tests is done to monitor glucose levels in the body over a period of time. The OGTT is a better way to diagnosis glucose level in the blood.

The OGTT and the fasting process for glucose are even recommended by American Diabetes Association, and recommends that testing should be done 2 times on regular basis for proper diagnosis of diabetes.

Pregnant women are subjected to diabetes test, as they are prone to gestational diabetes during 24th and 28th week of the pregnancy. The OGTT test is used for this purpose.

It is essential that diabetic patients must check the glucose level in their blood on daily basis, and take medications and insulin(s) as needed by them.  They may do it by pricking their finger and by placing drop of blood on the glucose strip, which is then scanned under the glucose meter to identify exact glucose level in the blood.

Urine is now rarely tested to determine amount of glucose in the blood. The urine glucose test is done for those patients who have problems in the urinary tract infection, or may be for some others reasons.

About 30 percent of people from the estimated amount are likely to get Type-2 diabetes within a year, but most of them may not even aware of it.

The common blood test known as hemoglobin A1c test is simple and reliable, and is able to detect whether a person is pre-diabetic. Reports about the blood test was published in American Journal of Preventive Medicine, which states that it is indeed a major step in curbing symptoms of the diabetes in pre-diabetic people. People, undergoing this test will be more aware, and should be careful about their health.

The average glucose level is measured for 8 to 12 weeks, and even individual don’t require testing after having overnight fast. The test is simple and can be conducted at the physician’s office only.

Person’s who are suffering from heart disease or high blood pressure, obesity, and have past incident of diabetes during pregnancy, or even having a family history of diabetes, can undergo the simple test to know whether they are pre-diabetic or not. Diabetes Education a Must

Even today half of the patients having diabetes attend self management classes for diabetes. This was revealed by American Association of Diabetes Educators, and it was truly surprising to find that only one percent of patient under Medicare receive self management training, at a time when the world is dealing with more cases of diabetic patients and numbers are increasing every year.

Diabetes education is conducted to provide enhanced knowledge about diabetes and to become self supportive when it comes to monitoring and controlling blood sugar levels. It helps patients to maintain healthy lifestyle and reduce complications like heart disease, renal disease, vision loss and limb loss. It also makes you self confident in controlling the disease and saves money on expensive health care.

You can get ideal training from certified diabetes educator (CDE) who provides you extensive information on dealing with diabetes. You too can become CDE and impart education to other people. Several criteria are included in order to be a certified educator. A CDE can be anyone-doctor, nurse, dietician, pharmacist or other licensed professional.

The minimum eligibility criteria for CDE require completion of 2 years of professional practice and 2 years of association for diabetes education. An individual should have 1000 hours of working experience in health related fields as a diabetes educator. The person must be associated with heath care provider that treats diabetes regularly and should clear the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators examination. Exam fee is $350 and candidate has to answer 200 questions within 4 hours.

The main objective is to retard progression of disease, by keeping blood sugar level to the specified limit. This help significantly as it results in curbing various symptoms of the disease. The risk factor is reduced by about sixty percent if proper treatment is done for diabetic neuropathy.

Ideally if you want to keep blood sugar levels under control then you must follow these figures given.

Before meal, blood sugar level should be 70 to 130 mg/dL, and after meal it should be lower than 180 mg/dL. Hemoglobin should also be tested for blood sugar and it is ideal to keep up Hemoglobin A1C less than 7 percent.

Now you may be wondering what is A1C. Well, A1C is the sugar along with hemoglobin which assists in carrying oxygen to the red blood cells. As the average blood sugar level increases, it also raises A1C. Without diabetes the A1C number will stand at 4 to 6 percent.

All the blood sugar tests are carried at all major health clinics and providers at reasonable cost. Doctor consultation is necessary before you go for test. You need to prevent damages to the nerve cells if you are suffering from diabetic neuropathy. Follow doctors recommendations for they can best guide you towards keeping your sugar level under control. Nerve damages can be slowed down by consumption of healthy food, controlling blood sugar level, performing exercises, taking care of your feet, monitoring weight, avoiding alcohol and smoking. If someone indeed wants to drink, then one drink is allowed each day for women and two drinks per day for men.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is mainly caused due to lack of exercise and proper nutrition. Not having requisite diet and exercise can lead the body to response negatively to insulin, i.e. the cells in our bodies remain inactive so that they don’t respond to insulin created by the pancreas.

In the early periods of diabetes, the insulin is produced in more quantities by pancreas which enables glucose movement into the cells, thus making blood sugar levels normal. This situation is often referred as compensated insulin resistance.

But as the disease becomes older, pancreas cannot produce increased levels of insulin and thus blood sugar level rises. This is referred to as uncompensated insulin resistance.

Thus Type 2 diabetes is more associated with insulin resistant cells and affects older age people. However, some cases are also found in children and younger age people.

Treatment is an essential part if you have tested positive for diabetes. Consult your doctor or go to the nearest health care clinic and start treatment done at an earliest. If left untreated, diabetes can be fatal and can even lead to other complications and eventually death. During treatment doctors may prescribe medications and prepare diet chart for you. It is vital to follow diet chart for curing the disease, as often diabetes treatment can be done without inclusion of medications and injections. All you need is proper nutrition and a bit of physical activity to keep yourself fit and healthy. Exercise along with diet is an essential part of treatment and you can go for exercise as prescribed by your doctor.
