FBI Aims to Pry Open New Channels for Web Surveillance

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation is urging Internet companies to provide back doors that facilitate online surveillance. The bureau aims to increase the amount of data they can collect through online channels. Because of a shift in popular communication methods, it’s more difficult to gather information on Americans suspected of illegal activity, the FBI claims.

Amazon Cloud Player review: functional, not mind blowing, and still US-only

AmazonAndroidCloudPlayerappIt’s hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society — which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions – is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon’s two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it’s the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android.

Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It’s not particularly feature rich, and there’s no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive — it does work outside the US, however.

Its primary purpose, as far as we’re concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it’s $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space.

The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it’s very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let’s dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look.

Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight shipping this week, B&N warns of limited supply

Image

So much for waiting until May to get your hands on some glowing, Nooky goodness. Barnes & Noble let us know today that the admittedly somewhat clunkily named Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight is slipping out ahead of schedule. The light up e-reader starts shipping this week for those who’ve already pre-ordered a unit and will continue to ship throughout the month. Apparently in-store units will be a bit fewer and further between, however — the company announced that the device will be available in “limited quantities” when it hits stores early next month. So, if you don’t want to make your mom cry this Mother’s Day, the company’s recommending that you jump on the pre-order bandwagon soonish. Of course, it couldn’t hurt to give our review a peek first, just to make sure.

ScreenShot2012-01-24at12.05.51PMTimehop, a startup that humbly began as 4SquareAnd7YearsAgo, has just bagged a $1.1 million round of seed funding by OATV (Bryce Roberts) and followed on by Spark Capital (Andrew Parker) and a pretty worth list of angels including Foursquare’s Dennis Crowley, Naveen Selvadurai and Alex Rainert, Groupme’s Steve Martocci and Jared Hecht, Rick Webb and Kevin Slavin. Timehop was part of the TechStars NYC winter class. The startup started out aggregating Foursquare user checkins from a year ago in a daily email and recently broadened to include Facebook status updates, photos, Twitter updates and Instagram posts.

Windows 8 wallpaper available to download, Jupiter and Twin UI spotted

windows8wallpaper

With Windows 8 milestone 3 now up for grabs for select Microsoft Connect partners, it’s inevitable that leaked bits and pieces will start popping up around the Web. In fact, the first “official” wallpaper image from the still-brewing OS is already making the rounds.

As you can see, it’s got a similar feel to the good ol’ Windows 7 default background, but features a more subdued smattering of cerulean hues. Those of you who want to use the Windows 8 wallpaper on your current desktop can download it from our file dump.

A few other details have been revealed, too. According to ZDNet’s source, the Windows 8 Jupiter libraries and Twin UI are starting to take shape — though all that’s been located thus far are “[various files] scattered throughout the OS” and the aptly-named twinui.dll.

Google Asks Android App Devs to Design by the Book

It’s well known that Android is fragmented or, as Google CEO Eric Schmidt contends, “differentiated.” In a bid to codify design principles for the operating system’s look and feel, Google unveiled Android Design at CES on Thursday. This website seeks to help appdevs create apps with a more uniform look and feel for its latest version, Ice Cream Sandwich.
