By All Beekeepers The Compulsory Supplies Required By All
Beekeepers Edit Article [15] | Posted: Oct 11, 2010 |Comments: 0
[16] | Share ]]> The cardinal sin with beekeeping is not using
the correct tools and supplies. Beekeeping is a fun hobby but also
has the real possibility of being dangerous as well. But if the
beekeeping supply [17] you have is made up of the correct
equipment, the chance of injury is greatly reduced. Extracting the
honey is what the majority of your supplies will be for but a few
are needed for properly looking after the hive and colony. The Suit
and Other Essentials A key aspect to beekeeping is making sure that
the beekeeper is safe from harm while monitoring the bee colony and
the hive. This can be done in many ways. Obviously, one of the
first methods is to employ protective clothing at all times. All
beekeepers should invest in the following for protective clothing:
a hat accompanied with a veil, good thick gloves and of course, a
high quality beekeeping suit. The most vulnerable part of the body
that can be stung is the face, so it's crucial that even the most
competent of beekeepers do not become lax on this point, and
protect their faces with a suitable hat and veil. Normally white
and full length, the beekeeping suit is made of a gauzy fabric.
It's specifically built to be hard for a bee sting to puncture,
thus not allowing the beekeeper to be not injected with venom.
Always use gloves when working with bees. They can be arduous to
use sometimes but you'll think twice if you are stung on the hand!
The Advantages of Using SmokersMost beekeepers engage the use of a
"smoker". A smoker will put the bees in a serene state and working
with them is then much easier and stress free. A smoker is a
beekeeping tool that expels smoke and uses a range of various fuels
to do so. You can use burlap, twine, cardboard, pine needles,
hessian and rotting wood as fuel. Even compacted cotton and pulped
paper work very well as fuel. Aerosol cans filled with smoke are
also quite effective. The smoke triggers a natural feeding
mechanism within the bees. The resulting behavior from the bees is
to begin the necessary preparations in the possibility of having to
vacate the hive, just as if a real fire had occurred. The smoke
also acts to hide the "alarm" pheromones that the guard bees
distribute throughout the hive when it's believed there is an
emergency. While the entire colony is in a confused state, the
beekeeper can then seize the opportunity to open the hive and work
within its confines without the fear of initiating a defensive
reaction from the bees. Improving the Diet of BeesIt's very common
for beekeepers to supplement the diet of the colony. The sugar
syrup is good for staving off starvation if their usual food source
is at a low level and is also a stimulant for the process of laying
eggs. I'd certainly recommend using a feeder to feed your colony of
bees. You'll find that there are plenty of different feeders
available on the market. A hive top, a pail or division boards will
be perfect as inside feeders in the winter months. And when it's
summer, an entrance feeder should be used because this is when the
bees are most active. Care for the Hive! The biggest component to
maintaining a bee colony is what they're actually housed in.
Beekeeping involves using artificial hives to keep the colony in,
which is comprised of a wax substructure. This will encourage the
colony to construct the comb in a way that is conducive for easy
harvesting. The foundation is a slender wax sheet comprising of a
cell based hexagonal pattern embossed on both the sides. This will
enable the bees in such a way that it reduces their efforts when
assembling the combs. Retrieved from
