Bali boasts of both extraordinary and unique colorfully rich Bali
culture and ancient traditions. Though most Bali villas guest get
so wrapped up in shopping, partying and beach life, one could
hardly fail to see Bali’s countless temples, come across ceremonies
and witness daily offerings and the Balinese adherence to the
traditions of their ancestors.
Even some of the famous
luxury villas in Bali showcases the Bali
traditions and cultural arts in their designs and lifestyle themes.
Bali lifestyle is closely integrated with its culture to which the
cycle of life and Bali religion is closely tied. This seamless
integration is reflected in day to day life and can be seen in the
numerous ceremonies, rare traditions, Balinese festivals and
magnificent temples and palaces.

Sample offering festival in Bali that promotes colorful
culture of the island
|
These rare Bali traditions and Balinese celebrations and ceremonies
begin very early in life and are reflected in its beautiful
surroundings. The first ones take place even before birth and are
expressed continuously in celebrations and daily routines as well
as in the dance and music and in the traditional crafts and
architectural designs of the many
villas especially in Seminyak and hotels
in Bali.
One could not miss seeing in Bali young Balinese girls twisting
their arms, rocking their heads, and taking seemingly martial
stances under the watch of the revered teacher during their morning
lesson.
One could even see small offerings on leaves on the many temples
every morning across Bali. Both of these are examples of ancient
traditions that are passed on to the latest generation daily.
Traditional celebrations are held for many occasions from
tooth-filing (coming-of-age ritual), cremation or odalan (temple
festival) to traditional Bali wedding.
Bali’s traditional dancers often start learning their skills in the
womb with gamelan music (a traditional Balinese musical ensemble)
played to them. And then, they are trained to do some hand
positions, the mudras, before they can walk. Actual dance classes
frequently start around the age of 7.
There are many of these Balinese celebrations that call for a loud,
boisterous atmosphere with lots of activity, with a resulting
atmosphere they call ramé (crowded, noisy and lively) which is
distinctively Balinese. More often than not, there are two or more
gamelan ensembles that will be performing well within earshot, and
sometimes compete with each other in order to be heard.
Balinese traditions are also reflected in their countless temple
architecture and designs. With an estimated 20,000 puras (temples)
and shrines, which have made Bali well-known as the “Island of a
Thousand Puras” or “Island of the Gods”, temples are everywhere in
Bali.
In a Balinese typical village, one can see at least three temples
as required by adat (a Balinese customary law). Each Balinese
village has a pura puseh (temple of origin) located at the kaja
(pure) side of the village, a pura desa (village temple) at the
centre for everyday community activities and a pura dalem (temple
of the dead) at the kelod (unclean) end.
Balinese temple design, be it decorative or structural, showcases a
specific, well-considered function, which integrates an earthly or
spiritual nature. The vast majority of these Balinese temples
showcase general elements such as they are always split into three
courtyards: the outer courtyard or jaba; the middle courtyard or
jaba tengah; and the inner courtyard or jeroan. Each of these
courtyards contains various structures and/or shrines of differing
levels of importance.

dry, arid and stony landscape, Bukit Bali encompasses the entire

traditional Balinese fishing village of Jimbaran Bay in the neck of
the Peninsula near the international airport, down through the
beaches of Pecatu and the famous cliff-hanging temple at Uluwatu, a
number of Bali's very best beaches including Balangan, and the top

The right season to savor the best of Bali Island
|
Even when it is raining across most of Bali, sunny, dry days can
often be enjoyed on the Bukit Peninsula which receives far less
rain than any other part of the island.
On the other hand, in central Bali and in the mountains, cloudy
skies and showers are not a surprise at any time of the year.
While, at higher elevations such as Bedugul or Kintamani, it could
get distinctly chilly and you will need either a sweater or jacket
after the sun sets.
Although sunny weather is usually plenty in Bali, there are also
fairly high levels of humidity that can make the climate feel
considerably hotter, particularly at midday, when lunch in an
air-conditioned restaurant is often very welcomed.
The climate of Bali really falls into two rather distinctive Bali
season: the Dry Season, between May and September and the Wet
Season between the months of October and April.
High humidity can be expected during the Wet Season while the Dry
Season has the lowest humidity and it can be quite cool in the
evenings. However, even during the midst of a wet monsoon, it is
quite likely that the sun will make an appearance during the
afternoon.
The Bali peak season for tourist falls between April to September
and most visitors to the island favor this time of the year,
weather-wise. Of course, these months also coincide with the main
tourist season, so there will be more crowds which could be
intrusive and trips and accommodation will be more expensive. The
months of July, August, and September are the driest months and the
best season to visit Bali if you really don’t want to experience
rain.
However, for keen surfers, anytime between May and October is a
good time to experience the strong waves on the island's westerly
coastline. For those visitors who want to avoid the rains as well
as the larger crowds and associated price hikes, the ideal times
for travel are April and May, as well as late September.
In April or May, the weather is almost just as nice, with less
tourists and a great likelihood of getting hotel and flight
bargains for these times. An alternative time would be the month of
October, which has similar advantages.
Here are some
villas in Bali that are ideal for all season
and stay uncrowded even on peak season:
Villa Asmara
Set snugly between the beach and sea temple of Pura Gede Luhur
Batungaus and the terraced rice fields of Cemagi on Bali’s

time.
Built to accommodate up to 8 people, Villa Asmara is situated on
Bali’s south-west coast, just beyond the sleepy village of Cemagi.
Despite its rural setting, this four-bedroom villa is only 30
minutes’ drive from the many restaurants and shops of cosmopolitan
Seminyak and within easy reach of 10 minutes by car to the world
famous Echo Beach, where guests can enjoy the laidback surfer vibe,
an ice-cold beer and some incredible sunsets as well as also 10
minutes away to the famous Greg Norman designed golf course which
recently won ‘best golf course in Asia’.
A perfect tropical Balinese hideaway, Villa Asmara combines classic
Balinese architecture with the comforts of modern living, where
guests are treated to a beautiful and luxurious home in a serene
and peaceful environment to relax and unwind.
Villa Asmara showcases a lily pond, lush garden lawns and the salt

each with open-air garden bathrooms and balconies. The building
opposite features the second master bedroom with a large open-air
garden bathroom equipped with a deluxe bath tub.

the open-air living and dining area, which is located on the ground
floor, overlooking the gardens and the swimming pool. The first
master bedroom features glass sliding doors with en-suite bathroom
offering views over the rice paddies and the ocean.

Bali rice terraces are not only a source of scenic attraction for
Bali travel tourists but it is also cultural.
To the Balinese, Bali rice is not just a staple food but it is an
integral part of the Balinese culture as well.
For the Balinese, rice is considered as a gift from the gods
created by the Hindu deity Vishnu, offering it then to man as his
divine legacy or heritage.
In this respect, rice and its cultivation is considered as sacred,
entailing the careful implementation of a set of rituals of
the cycle of planting, maintaining, irrigating, and harvesting rice
first laid down by the god Indra.

|
One of the wonderful views of rice terraces in Bali
|
A central part to the Balinese way of life, there are 2 sets of
crops of rice grown by Balinese farmers each year in irrigated,
terraced rice field Bali, which for many are considered the
definitive feature of the Balinese landscape.
The Balinese people hold sacred ceremonies before planting,
throughout growing time and at harvesting, where offerings are
presented to Dewi Sri the goddess of rice as well as the wife of
Vishnu and is considered as one of the most popular deities in the
Balinese pantheon, being regarded as the paragon of everything that
is good and beautiful.
Ngusaba Nini festival is the most important subak (the local
cooperative organizations who govern the maintenance and regulation
of the water sources in the mountains that are directed to each
individual rice field) ceremony in the agricultural cycle.
Held either just before or immediately after the rice harvest at
the subak association temple, Ngusaba Nini festival takes form of a
thanksgiving ceremony where mouth-watering selection of offerings
are prepared by subak association members. and are then dedicated
to the rice goddess Dewi Sri.

Influenced by Hindu-Javanese culture, Bali culture and customs are
closely linked with the Bali natives’ beliefs in their gods and
goddesses, good spirits and bad spirits all coming together in the
unique Bali religion.
Balinese culture and customs are seamlessly infused in their Bali
lifestyle as one can see it everywhere, from the gamelan music in
the hotel lobby, the Balinese
Bali villa designs, the exotically
decorated Balinese people on the streets, statues of fierce looking
guardians, the thousands of Balinese temples, the numerous colorful
umbrellas to the beautiful made offerings on cars, in front of
shops and pavements.
Somewhere in Bali, a religious ceremony or colorful ritual is
always taking place in one of the many temples or just outside the
villas in Bali on the beach. One would wonder at
how many Bali festivals take place in one year alone.

|
Colorful Bali Customs
|
Though from time to time, Balinese culture and customs do
evolve, the originality and characteristic still remain. This is
due the Balinese stronghold of their religion and traditions that
has preserved their culture from the outside influences.
Bali holds many celebrations for many occasions such as a
tooth-filing (coming-of-age ritual), cremation or odalan (temple
festival).
Désa kala patra is one of the most important concepts that Balinese
ceremonies have in common. This refers to the way ritual
performances must be appropriate in both the specific and general
social context.
Many of these Balinese celebrations usually call for a loud,
boisterous atmosphere with lots of activity and the resulting
aesthetic, ramé, is distinctively Balinese.
Frequently, one can see two or more gamelan ensembles performing
well within earshot, and sometimes compete with each other in order
to be heard. Similarly, the audience members could be seen talking
amongst themselves or walking around, or even cheering on the
performance, which adds to the many layers of activity and the
liveliness typical of ramé.
Driving around, one could run into several cremation ceremonies
called ngaben and women carrying towers of food on their heads to
bring to the gods in the temples such as on the national holiday of
Galungan.
For those who want to see and hear Bali music and dance, one of the
best venues to experience these is the cultural center of Bali,
Ubud.
In Ubud, traditional dances such as the masked dance of the Barong,
Legong, Pendet, Baris, Oleg Tambulilingan, Sanghyang and the Kecak
dance are performed in Bali villas resorts or hotels.
Bali Villas
Truly, Balinese culture and customs are immersed in its life. There
are even some Bali villas that showcase some old Balinese
traditions especially in the villa architecture designs.
Bali’s unique exotic Balinese designs are everywhere in Bali and
impossible to miss. Usually the traditional Balinese designs
combine the colorful fusion of Hindu and Buddhist traditions.
