Heavy Duty Sandblast Hood Review

(More customer reviews)I've done sandblasting of large car parts out in my yard for years, and have had a really flimsy hood that came with the sandblaster, and I finally decided to upgrade the hood to something that worked better.I did some research on various models, and found many good ones, but with relatively high prices.This hood impressed me with it's features as well as the price, so I ordered one.I've used it a few times now, and find it a good improvement over my past hood.The built in helmet is great for keeping the hood centered on my head, and the hood material is the right length to keep my neck and upper body protected from sandblast media.I think the hood diameter could have been slightly larger at the bottom to give me more shoulder room, but I'm a big guy at 6'4", and it does fit, just a little more snug than I'd prefer.The clear lens is protected by the wire mesh and that seems to keep sand from abrading it on the outside.The lens has fogged up on me on the inside, especially while using it on several cool October evenings, and I'm not sure any hood that isn't ventilated by a blower would do any better.I haven't tried it in hot summer weather yet, but am curious whether the built in vents will do the job of keeping me cool inside.Time will tell.Overall, it's a good sandblast hood for the money, and the quality of construction seems pretty rugged.I'd definitely recommend it to the home user or hobbyist for occasional work.However, if you're going to work in a hood daily, you probably should invest in a better unit with built in ventilation.

Everything from the little, rubbery, yellow standard ones that many production workplaces have to various headphones (over the ears and in the ears). You roll these to make them smaller like the yellow ear plugs and then insert them (they're made of foam). As they slowly filled my ears, the sound went almost completely away.

My usage for earplugs is to block out co-workers talking and the flurry of PC keyboard typing that occurs when people go on an IM rampage. Whenever I use my headphones with my MP3 player, I can always still hear almost all of the typing and quite a bit of the chatter. When I put these in, the software support guy I can ALWAYS hear (he speaks loud due to hearing loss) was slowly drowned out until all I could hear was a vague droning of speech. I was amazed! I could never shut that guy out before.

The co-worker in the cube behind me loves to IM another co-worker and she has really long fingernails that clack as she types. Very annoying when done quickly and for long periods of time. Her typing went away so well that I thought she had stopped typing until I removed the earplugs. My OWN typing is nearly silent as well.

I just can't say enough about these ear plugs. Seriously, considering the price, they're the best purchase I've made in ages!

COLD WEATHER Mask Review

(More customer reviews)I have asthma, and we are currently in the midst of a long spell of freezing temperatures with sub-zero wind chills, and periods of snow every day. It's been brutal. I bought this some time ago, and since my scarf keeps falling off my nose, I decided to give it a try. It works real well. Mind you, it's not fashionable. I look like I'm going to rob the bank. (I don't wear it into stores), but it's kept me breathing warm air, while I'm trying to scrape ice off my windshield. The elastic keeps it in place, and that's a plus. I've been wearing it, even after the car warms up. It's turned out to be a good buy; I'm going to pick up a spare.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this item in October and it arrived Oct 30, 2009 with a broken headband.Both the outer shipping container and the inner box showed no damage so it 'appeared' that it was not damaged in shipment.Amazon.com sent me a new one in November.I have used it about 10-15 times.It has not been abused...in fact I've been extremely careful with it due to the headband breaking during shipment.It is now less than 2 months later.The headband broke again in the same place...just behind the top band.I removed the headband (a simple task) and examined it.Not only is it completely broken on one side....the other side shows a crack about 3/4 of the way thru the band.The replacement headband is $47.This is too expensive an item to be having these problems.It works well but I'd avoid this item until they fix their manufacturing problems and make it more reliable.
Update 2/2/10:Trend was quick to send me a new headband.I haven't had it long enough to know if the problem has been solved, however, they say it was a manufacturing problem and they solved it. There might still be a few out there with the defective headband so if you get one...call Trend.As noted above....it does work well.

It works well but is hampered by an ungainly procedure to change batteries and choice of materials and construction that does not hold up to extensive use. My airshield has ended up with numerous super glued joints and replaced rivets. Perhaps the Airshield Pro is designed better but the standard airshield does not hold up to continuous use.

-- Better than paper masks.

-- It's so light (under 2 oz.), you hardly think about it.It's also comfortable, as the straps are cloth and fully adjustable, and the filtering material is soft.The bottom strap uses Velcro, and the top has a non-Velcro adjustable ring.

-- I wear glasses, and although they fog a tad if I get overheated, it's no worse than paper masks.

-- Has an imbedded aluminum strip in the nose area which can be bent to fit the user.

Cons:

-- When cutting treated timbers, I had been using an MSA Comfo Classic respirator, as that device seems to be 100% effective in filtering out wood dust.Rather than using the bulky respirator, I tried a Dust Bee Gone mask - and coughed for several hours that evening, from dust inhalation.Have no idea how the dust was getting in, but it was.

-- Absurdly over-priced.Should have sent it back on that basis alone.Worth $5 at best.

Summary:

I bought one of these sight-unseen, solely on the recommendation of Fine Woodworking magazine.It's better than paper masks, but since it wasn't effective with wood dust, it's not useful to me.Bottom line - if you want effective dust protection, buy a decent respirator.

JDS 14033 1-Micron Bag Kit for Dust Force Review

(More customer reviews)I highly recommend the book, Controlling Dust in the Workshop. In there I learned a lot about setting up dust control in the workshop. One of the more profound things was that we can only see dust particles down to 20 microns. The 1-micron particles are the ones that get into the tiny recesses of the lungs, and can do the most damage.
Even though I have just bought a second JDS Air Cleaner 750JER, the author mentions that they are effective at cleaning the big stuff, but the little stuff they send flying through the shop. In all fairness, the JDS air cleaner cleans 99% of all particles, and gets 80% of the 1-micron type. I use them to try and keep a clean shop.
What the author states is that if you get your dust collecting system together properly that is all that you need. You just need a dust collection system, and no ceiling air cleaners. Capture it at the source, he says, nip it in the bud, keep the air clean before it gets dirty. That is where this 1-micron bag comes in. He is emphatic about cleaning out the 1-micron size dust.
The author also suggests that a cyclone dust collecting system is best. Without getting too wordy, essentially, cyclone systems prevent wood chunks, or even worse metal screws for example, getting to the fan blades, and denting it up, or causing a spark. The problem is that they are expensive. Also they do not pull as much air as the JDS Dust Force unless you buy a 3 HP unit.
Combining the JDS dust force, the Woodstock International separator, and this 1 micron bag kit, you are spending about a third of the money, and getting the same results. The 1-micron bag kit is essential though. What good is it, if you are collecting dust from your tools, then sending the finer stuff into the air, and into your lungs?
Look into the Woodstock International separator. It is cheap and fits on top of a standard inexpensive, 30-gallon trash can. Only the fine dust makes it to the JDS dust force or shop vac.
So cleaning the bag is not as frequent.
I would like to mention that I wear a respirator while sanding, sawing, etc. Not that little white cotton thing that leaks real bad, almost like not having a mask on at all. A real mask like the 3M Paint spray respirator. When I am not active, the neck straps keep it on, while it drapes on front of me like a bib.
Going a little farther, I have a fresh air supplied system, with a helmet mask, that is 100% fresh air from the outside, fed to me from a diaphragm based, fresh air supplied respirator pump. That is a moderate investment. I break that out when I am doing something that is caustic.
I had a body shop for 20 years. Did a lot of high-end cars. All in all, I don't have any breathing problems.
There is a disease in the woodworking industry called, black lung, or brown lung. Comes from a long-term exposure to fine airborne wood dust. The government has announced it is officially a carcinogen. Ouch!
So get the book, Controlling Dust in the Workshop, and read about how to set up your shop for clean, clear, and more fun, with less work to clean up. And spend the extra money, and get the 1-micron bag kit. It's a bargain, considering the money you saved buying the JDS Dust Force. How do they get 1200 CFM, relatively quietly, and still keep the price so reasonable. Just check out the cyclone units at Onieda-air.com to see what I mean. Hope this helps.

(More customer reviews)This mask is tight. I suppose it needs to be to keep the bad stuff out. Its kind a one size fits all since its made of really stretchy rubber. It takes a bit of practice learning how to breathe properly while wearing. REMEMBER to remove the stopper on the filter. You can't breathe at all if it is left in place.A cool feature is that when you breathe in the fresh air coming through the filter defogs your eye glass.Of course when you breathe out they have a tendency to fog up again. Plus it comes with a green military style carry bag.
I feel safer owning a few of these and keep them in my garage.Hopefully me and my family won't ever need them.Pretty cheap insurance.

Do not just measure your forehead.Also I now have childrens masks so please state if you would like that.
