In addition to this trim kit, of which there are several different, at prices between $179 and $500, you also need to buy a rough valve, for about $44.
I recall a science fiction movie I saw on TV in the 1960's; I think it was CATWOMEN FROM THE MOON. Some test pilots were displaced far into Earth's future. One pilot marveled, how the shower temperature was perfect without any adjustment, as evidence that he was not on the Earth he had known.
That future has arrived.
I installed one of these Hansgrohe ThermoBalance controls in my home. It's great!
Before this unit, my hot watertook about 3 minutesto reach my shower. Then I would spend about 10 minutes twiddling the hot & cold valves installed in the 1950's, seeking the correct temperature. Once adjusted,I didn't dare change volume. As colder water entered the pipes, things changed again. A toilet flush complicated matters further.
Now I just turn the volume handle all the way on. When the hot water eventually arrives, the valve immediately mixes the right amount for the same temperature I last adjusted to. I can rinse, turn the volume down or off to soap, then turn it up for another rinse. Temperature remains constant. A toiletflush is irrelevant to shower temperature. I'm saving much adjusting time and hot water.
You control temperature with a central knob. There is a 100 degree Fahrenheit stop, but this can be overridden by pushing and turning past the stop. Hansgrohe cautions that temperature won't reset below the stop for the next shower.
But if the installer properly limits the max temperature, this shouldn't really hurt anyone. And it's great that the next shower starts at the same temperature as the last.

There are three basic Thermobalance setups:
ThermoBalance I - Shower Only.
ThermoBalance II -Shower & tub diverter.
ThermoBalance III - Luxury setups involving all sorts of optional nozzles and body sprays.
My tub fills from separate pipes, so I didn't need a diverter. Therefore, I bought the shower-only ThermoBalance I.
ThermoBalance I & II use the same rough valve. III seems to have a different valve, with a third outlet for the fancy jets.

Some one-time tweaking is involved after installation. You or your installer should calibrate the 100 degree stop by adjusting it while running the water over a thermometer. You should also adjust the maximum temperature below 110 degrees F, or as set by your local building code. The instructions are pretty clear. But most people will likely have a plumber install this unit.

I installed the unit after my 1926 tiles fell off my shower wall. Since I was re-tiling anyway, I created an instruction tile, that shows a user how to work the control. You can see how the control works and even buy my tile at

I'm not affiliated with Hansgrohe in any way, so let there not be any trademark confusion. I just designed a tile and installed it in my shower.

Anyway, this ThermoBalance control is one of the best things I ever bought. Adjustment-free showers are actually a lifestyle change. With the time I save, I hope to get my billable hours up and become rich.

They won't return my emails and now I have to pay $70 more for the handles when I could have got it for $20 more w/the handles from another vendor. Not to mention the spout looks like it has been used as a display and the set screw and cover are also missing. Terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(More customer reviews)This is a great looking light -far better than the plastic lights on the market and I like the rectangle design better than the circular ones.

The installation instructions were well written with 4 sets of instructions depending on your scenario (new construction/replacing an existing fan etc.) I was replacing an existing fan.

You will need Three-conductor NM cable running to a double switch to utilize the full functionality of this fan (contains both red and black "hot" wires) so that you can power on the nightlight (1) Then the fan/main light (2) via a double light switch. If you have a standard 3 wire cable (one black hot), you can just skip the nightlight and have your fan and light run on the single switch.

I have two switches wired, but had no use for the nightlight-a small std nightlight sized bulb required. I prefer to have the fan run separately from the main light, because I like to leave the fan on when I'm out of the room sometimes to keep air moving etc. So, You can just route the hot red to either the fan or the light, and the hot black to the other and leave the nightlight unwired, or just couple it with one or the other, but leave its bulb out. Both setups get routed to the same white (return). The directions assume you want the fan and main light on together and the color coding of the wires can make it tricky if you stray from that plan-especially working in a tight space reaching up to the ceiling. I installed alone, and it's a bit of a juggling act trying to keep the unit up while threading wire caps-so I recommend a buddy to help hold the case.

I was able to install two standard CFL bulbs (energy efficient curly ones). I recommend those instead of the smaller A15 incandescents. The cover is a thick opaque glass, and it doesn't allow a lot of light through. I have CFL's, so that doesn't help either, but I must agree it is a bit dim. I have another light in the room, so not an issue for me.

The glass cover has two metal rods attached in parallel and they fit into a harness that requires a push up, then over; then it locks down (with gravity into a groove). It can come loose, but it would take a forceful "up and over" push to accidentally knock it down, and it can be installed incorrectly increasing this risk. I would recommend not using this fixture if you have a lot of activity (horseplay/teenage boys?) or a low ceiling. My bathroom ceiling has a slope to it; I was fortunate to inadvertently install it in the direction where the slope benefits the locking mechanism, but if I had reversed the middle platform mounting, I would have a high risk of the cover slipping as described in another post.

Overall it's a nice attractive light; The fan is nice, powerful and quiet; light is a bit dim due to cover thickness and there is a chance of the cover coming off if installed incorrectly, on a slope or if pushed abruptly.

(More customer reviews)The vent in our bathroom died recently, so seeing that it was a Nutone 665, I ordered this unit, assuming it would be easy to pull the old one out and replace it with this.Unfortunately, the housing has been redesigned for the worse.The old unit did indeed slide out very easily, leaving its hanger bars in the space above the ceiling.The new unit requires you to attach the hanger bars to the housing before installing it.Furthermore, the old unit had an opening for the power to come into the unit where the connections were light, vent, and heat were made.The new unit has these connections outside the housing.

Basically, I had to cut open a larger hole in the ceiling to allow for the hanger bars and give me space to hammer them in.The grille is barely larger than the housing, so now I have an ugly space surrounding the unit in the bathroom ceiling.

If they hadn't changed the design, I could have reconnected the power, slid the unit in, and hung it on the old hanger bars and written a 5-star review.The new design makes it much harder to install in a finished bathroom and I see no reason why it was changed.The old unit's design was far superior.If I fix the drywall and this unit dies, I'll have to cut the ceiling again to get it out.I'd rather just leave the hole and find some kind of frame to fit around the grille to hide the hole.

(More customer reviews)I own a 100-year-old four-plex in New Orleans, so I spend a lot of time dealing with slow drains.The Drain Blaster is the first product I reach for now and it always gets the drains moving.Sometimes I have to supplement later by using the Drain King Drain Flusher (G. T. Water Prod. 186 Drain King Drain Opener)in the clean-out, but the Drain Blaster always at least gets the water moving and, in doing so, ends the emergency.

However, I found that mounting the fan with the attached mount placed the exaust 180 degrees from the exaust ventpipe, already installed. If I had had access to the fan from the attic, this would not have been a problem; I would have installed a cross mount for positioning the fan correctly, lining up with the ventpipe. Also, the fan exaust was 4in. in diameter. The original was 3in.
