Arbour or Arbor

Garden Arbor or Garden Arbour

By John Rea

Garden arbors can really bring out the best in a garden. Any climbing plant looks great over an arbor whether it be a rose or honeysuckle. Arbors have been around many years, for as long as people have been building structures and they were hugely popular during the Victorian era.

A garden arbor will become a focal point of any garden and can be made from wood, metal, plastic or the more modern vinyl.

You can choose to have an arbor over a path, or you can put seating underneath it for a relaxing spot in the garden. The arbor can be just an arched frame or you choose to have lattice work up the sides to support climbing plants.

Currently the trend is using an arbor as an extra sort of outdoor room in your garden. It is mostly used for entertaining. You can choose large arbors for a large entertainment seating area or a little hideaway for yourself.

There are so many choices for arbors and they come in different materials and different styles. You can choose to build your own, have one made or use a kitset.

If you have a country style garden you may want to use wood that has a rustic look to it to integrate it fully into your garden. If you are looking for something more modern, a simple arch in vinyl may just be exactly what you are wanting. If you buy a readymade arbor from a company, you may find that they also sell planter boxes and matching seats or benches made in the same material and style and you can buy these to incorporate a whole new look in your garden.

Your Own Garden Fruit

Grow Your Own Garden Fruit Trees for Real Fruit

By Colin Clifford

When visiting a supermarket have you never wished you had a few garden fruit trees? Have you ever noticed how purchased fruit these days is bit inconsistent in quality? Sometimes it will be fine, but mostly is tasteless, too hard or too soft. The pears are rock hard, you can push your fingers through the plums, and the peaches start growing mould before they are soft enough to eat.

Some of this has to do with forced growing and artificial fertilizers, and some on picking too early, and being left to ripen during shipping. Much of the foreign grown fruit is picked unripened, and then ripened in the ship's hold. This leads to fruit with the taste and texture of wet cardboard. Why not grow your own? It is both cheaper and better for you, and the taste is far superior to anything grown and shipped from thousands of miles away, and fed on who knows what.

Even a small garden can be used for growing fruit trees, and there are apples, peaches, pears, cherries and plums suitable for the smallest garden. And these are just a few of what is available that be grown in shapes suitable for training along fences and walls, and up garden mesh and netting. You don't need a massive orchard for garden fruit trees any more if you know how to train them properly, and what varieties are best for growing in your local conditions.

If your garden is susceptible to early frosts, you should purchase trees that flower later, or you will lose the flowers before they can develop into fruit. Irrespective of your conditions, you should be able to grow a selection of apples, pears, plums and so on and even apricots and peaches if you have a reasonable amount of sun. Even grapes can be grown in temperate climates.

You should buy your stock from a good supplier that knows what you need for the areas in which you live. It is always best to buy local, since if they can grow it then so can you. Many people travel to warmer climates and return with fruit trees that looked great in 35 degrees of sun, but are stunted in your chillier 25 degrees. You should choose a selection of fruits suitable for your climate, and at least two of each. There are some self-pollinating varieties of fruit around, but it is safer to have two trees - you also get more fruit! If you are purchasing more than one variety of each fruit, then make sure that their pollen is compatible. In fact if you are buying two trees for pollination, then they should be different species, but compatible with each other. Your supplier will have this information for you.

You should also check out the fruit provided by each and make sure that it is what you are looking for. You don't want a Bramley tree if you want a desert apple, and some plums are naturally sour while others are sweeter. The same is true of grapes, and some of the sweetest wines can come from very sour grapes. Make you're your vines are desert grapes, and not cultivated for winemaking unless they are also suitable for eating.

The rootstock is very important, because fruits trees are generally propagated on rootstocks. Depending on the rootstock, an apple tree can grow to 5 ft or 25 ft in height and spread. The size of the tree will be determined by the size of your garden, so you should check with your supplier what the eventual size will be.

When buying a fruit tree, keep in mind that the older tress can be hard to transplant, so try to get a tree no more than two years old. Don't purchase too young or you might have to wait some years for a fruit, and the best type of plant is a bare root plant rather than ones in containers. If your garden is small, then many species of most fruits are suitable for espalier, fans and cordons. In a small garden, the cordons take up least space and provide a good crop of fruit from a single supported stem. However, if you have a lot of fencing space, or can put up a few trellises, then fans and espaliers would make good use of that space. Most fruit trees can be grown in that form.

Irrespective of whether you grow the full sized trees, or in dwarf or trained form, garden fruit trees will provide you with fruit that is ripened on the tree and that tastes like fruit and not cotton wool. If you are careful with your source of supply, and ensure that your variety is suitable for your climate, then there is no reason why you should not be a successful fruit grower, independent of supermarkets for your fresh fruit.

Garden Lights

Ideas For Garden Lights

By Sharon V Chapman

Adding lighting to the garden can take on any design that the homeowner wants. There are many different ideas for garden lights, some designed to create an extended living space beyond the interior of the home and others designed more for safety and security. Still other ideas combine the two to create a safe, warm, outdoor living space for entertaining or simply enjoying in the early evening hours during wind down time.

Solar garden lights are one idea for garden lights that bring the added benefit of saving electricity, which fits in well with the big push to go green and save the environment. Solar lights also allow the homeowner to do the installation without the aid of an electrical contractor while at the same time providing ample lighting and beauty.

Solar lighting is available in many of the same designs as traditional electrical lighting including solar landscape rocks for pathway lighting and solar stake lighting for enhancing garden features and bringing the landscape to life. There are solar hanging lights that can be draped in bushes to bring them alive after the sun goes down.

Water features are greatly enhanced with garden lights. There are both in-water and waterside lights to help bring water features to the forefront of the garden scene. Pools and ponds can be outfitted with underwater colored lights that create amazing shadow dances across and underneath the water. Water fixtures such as fountains can be accented with spotlights or hidden lighting that casts its glow on the piece, making it stand out from the cover of darkness.

If safety and security are the main concern with garden light designs then little more is needed than pathway lighting and possible motion detection lighting for dark corners of the landscape so that intruders will avoid the area. Pathway lighting can be used to line driveways, walkways and other walking areas of the landscape. This type of lighting can vary and be as subtle as landscape rocks with lighting built in or post lighting installed every few feet to light the way to the comforts of home.

Ideas for garden lights are limited only by the imagination and creation of the landscape designer or homeowner. Choose a plan that accents the garden or provides a sense of safety and let the garden be a place of respite and fun to all who visit.

Garden Fence

Garden Fences

Author: Yogesh Giri

Appearance is only one of many aspects of garden fencing; sometimes a pretty looking fence isn't enough and you need garden fencing for security reasons, you need something that will prevent unwanted guests from stepping onto your property. Two forms of garden fencing that are sure to do the job are the wrought iron fence and the wooden privacy fence. These two fences are two of the sturdiest and most secure kinds of garden fencing out there. If you are looking for strength and security, looking into these options would be a good start.

One of the best kinds of garden fencing for security purposes and keeping unwanted guests off of your yard is the wrought iron fence. In fact, the garden fencing that ensures the safety of the white house is actually a tall black wrought iron fence (although additionally enforced with armed guards, security cameras, and who knows what else). When one of my close friends had a pool installed in his home, he was required by law to keep the yard enclosed. The garden fencing needed to be secure enough to prevent wandering children from getting near the pool and getting hurt. We ended up choosing a wrought iron garden fences, it was fairly tall, very sturdy, and difficult to climb or get past. Additionally we went with garden fencing panels which made it very easy to install. The wrought iron fence isn't just a great security fence, but it also has a very nice appearance. Wrought iron fences are typically decorative and it is also a fairly neighborly fence in that your view isn't obstructed by it.

Another type of garden fencing that is great for security is the wooden privacy fence. This fence is made out of large wooden panels placed next to each other with no gaps in between. You can not see in or out of the wooden privacy fence. The fence is also usually fairly large and over six feet tall. It is extremely difficult to climb over as it is mainly just a flat surface and sometimes the top ends of the vertical wooden boards are in the form of a pointy 90 degree angle. This is the type of garden fencing that you might see stereotypically depicted with a sigh warning you to beware of dogs. This kind of garden fencing is great for preventing pets from leaving the yard in addition to keeping unwanted guests from entering are even looking into your yard. This fence also does well visually because of the great look of the wood and in addition to being a secure and sturdy fence, it will also provide privacy.

Perhaps there has been a burglary in your neighborhood or maybe you don't want kids trampling on your much worked on garden or maybe you simply want to keep your pets from wandering out into the street. Whatever your reasons, the wrought iron fence and the wooden privacy fence are both great garden fencing for security. They are both more secure than a chain linked fence and are probably the most secure garden fences available (short of maybe stone garden fencing).

Essential Tools

Top 3 Essential Gardening Tools

Author: Cindy Heller

Gardening is a great hobby. You will get great satisfaction from creating a well-groomed garden. Some people find it a great way to relax and de-stress as well. Here we will discuss three essential gardening tools, which are must have for creating a good-looking garden. Other a shovel for digging, the grass shears, the garden rake and the watering can are very important for proper maintenance of your garden.

Grass and Pruning Shears

The humble shears. It looks like a pair of scissors with extra-long blades. It is used for trimming small over-growth. Pruning shears help to keep all your plants properly trimmed to give your garden a well-kept look. Grass shears are used for trimming around footpath and landscaping. Shears can come with either long or short handles. The long-handled ones will take the stress off your back, while the shorter handles can be easily held. For thicker branches, you may need a powered shears.

Garden Rakes

Rakes are one of the most commonly used garden tools. You will need a garden rake for preparing the soil as well as keeping the garden litter-free and tidy, especially during the fall season. There are two main types of rakes. They are the yard or lawn rakes and the garden rakes. Yard rake is used to remove dead leaves and other debris from your garden. Otherwise, the young and tender shoots cannot force themselves through the debris. When choosing garden rakes, take into consideration the material and ergonomic of the design. For people with arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome, it is better to choose a lightweight rake that is easier to handle.

Garden Watering Tools

Water is essential for the survival of your garden. Hence, garden watering tools may be simple devices but absolutely essential for gardening.

Garden watering tools can be just a simple watering can or an automated sprinkler system. Whatever you use, you need to ensure that the soil can retain the moisture properly. Mix your sandy or gravel based topsoil with organic matter or paper mulch so it can hold in water better.

Take care to water your plants according to their individual needs. For example, check out how much water your sprinkler dispenses so you would know how long you should leave it on. Remember, too much water can lead to roots rot and plant diseases; too little water and the plants will dry up and die. Take care that you provide just the right amount of water. The best time for watering is between midnight and before dawn. Too early in the evening and you would have fungus growing, too late in the morning and you risk having your plants dried up. If you use automated garden watering device, set your timer appropriately. Remember to change the setting for different seasons. Clean your watering tool often as scum can accumulate in the hose, pipe and nozzle.

Garden Shed Plans

Garden Shed Plans – Choose a Design That's Best for You

Author: Bob Hightower

There a few things you must consider before purchasing your garden shed plans. If you are a Handyman and plan to build your own garden shed or tool shed consider these tips first.

Decide on the main Purpose of Your Garden Shed:

Before you can decide which shed plans are best suited for your project you must first assess the function of your shed. Will it primarily be utilized as storage for tools? Will you require access for large equipment such as a lawnmower, bicycles, or a golf cart? Will the main use of the shed be a garden-shed, workshop, garage, or pool-house? Once you decide on the primary use of your shed you can move on to the shed plan selection process.

Selecting the Best Garden Shed Style:

There are a few basic shed styles to choose from. For the most part, it is a matter of personal taste and preference which style to select. However; certain types of garden sheds are more complicated to build than others. For instance a shed with a Gambrel Roof may be too complex for a beginner handyman to fabricate. If you are a novice handyman stick to a uncomplicated plan with easy to follow instructions.

Choose an architectural design that compliments your existing home or other nearby structures. You should consider matching materials and a complimentary color as well.

Door Style and Size for Your New Garden Shed:

If you plan to store a golf cart or garden tractor in your shed you will require a large double door. Purchase a door that is 60 inches wide or greater, for easy access. If the purpose of the shed is for small storage only; then you may consider a single door for simplicity and cost. As a minimum width, purchase and install a 36 inch wide door.

Overall Size of Your New Garden Shed:

Bigger is most always better. If you are like the majority of Handyman, you never have enough space for your all of your tools and equipment. Calculate the space you anticipate you will need and add 30 percent or more for growth and new purchases. If you plan to store, bicycles, a riding lawnmower or golf cart in your garden shed, be sure to select a shed plan with sufficient space to walk around the equipment. Common garden shed sizes are 8x10, 10x10, 10x12, and 12x16.

Choosing the Best Windows for your Garden Shed:

In general, smaller windows are recommended for your garden shed. A smaller window provides additional security and also allows for extra storage space and wall space inside your shed. If you plan to use the shed as a workspace be sure to select a window that can be opened to allow for ventilation of fresh air.

Selecting Materials for Construction of Your Garden Shed:

For the do-it-yourself handyman, the obvious material of choice is wood. Select a shed plan with standard 2 x 4 construction to allow for insulation in colder climates. You can purchase metal sheds and plastic sheds but they are very limited when the time comes for a modification, paint color, or repair.

Wood is a very easy and forgiving material to work with for the beginner handyman. Cap it off with a fresh coat of paint for a professional appearance.

Standard asphalt roofing shingles are the best choice for the roof of your shed. Shingles are simple to install, provide excellent weather protection, and are durable with up to a 20 year or more lifespan. Select a shingle color and style that matches the roof of your home.

Accessories and Finishing Touches for Your Garden Shed:

In your budget be sure to include a few accessories such as specialty wall hooks for hanging your garden tools. You should also consider a shed plan that features shelving, or you can purchase ready-made free-standing shelving from your local hardware store.

Handyman Shed Plan Tips:

Tip 1) Clean and prime the wood prior to applying the finish coat of paint.

Tip 2) Select a shed plan with simple, easy to follow instructions, illustrations, and a complete bill of materials list.

Tip 3) Construct it with a friend; the project will go much smoother with an extra pair of hands.

Tip 4) Prepare a cost estimate using the bill of materials prior to starting on your shed project.

Garden Wheelbarrows

Your Essential Guide To Wheelbarrows

Author:
Filton Kingswood

So what would you consider to be the gardener's best friend? Maybe a fork for digging up weeds? Or how about a spade for turning the soil? Well it is in fact the trusty wheelbarrow, with thousands being sold in the UK every year.

Records suggest that the first wheelbarrow was invented in 407 B.C. by the ancient Greek builders who used it on a construction site. The wheelbarrow finally appeared in Europe around 1170 and was used by farmers to transport things. The uses for wheelbarrows have changed very little since but the types and variety of wheelbarrows have increased significantly.

The concept of a wheelbarrow is very simple, it comprises of a bin for holding materials, handles for lifting it and either one or two wheels for transporting it. So when you are looking to buy a sturdy, durable wheelbarrow, what should you be looking for?

Firstly, you must consider what the purpose of the wheelbarrow is. For builders, it is likely to be used for transporting heavy building materials, while a gardener is more likely to use it for transporting soil or plants to another destination in the garden.

Next you need to consider the size and weight of the wheelbarrow. Wheelbarrows come in a range of sizes with an average size carrying about 6 cubic feet of material. You may want a small wheelbarrow which can easily be stored when not in use but you need to also consider what you will be using it for. A small wheelbarrow may mean that you have to make more trips to accomplish your task. You may also be tempted to buy the largest possible wheelbarrow to allow you to use it for almost anything but the weight of a wheelbarrow is also very important. You need to consider not only the weight of the empty wheelbarrow but also of the contents that you are intending on transporting. An empty wheelbarrow may be easy to manoeuvre but the same wheelbarrow fully loaded with soil or concrete will be significantly more difficult to move. Balance is another important element when moving loads with a wheelbarrow. Overload the wheelbarrow and it will tip over, spilling its contents and possibly causing you injury.

Wheelbarrows come in a variety of different materials with the most common being plastic or metal. Both types can hold wet or dry material and can be easily tipped to dump or pour contents. Furthermore, both can be effortlessly cleaned with a spray from a hose. Metal is very durable but a heavier material so adds to the overall weight of the wheelbarrow. If you opt for a metal wheelbarrow, you will need to paint it annually to combat rust. Plastic is considerably lighter in weight but not as durable. It may crack if exposed to significant changes in temperature or if overloaded and is likely to fade in colour when exposed to sunlight. There is a third type of material, the wooden wheelbarrow. However these are not very commonly purchased in the UK as wood can warp and splinter over time.

When looking to buy a sturdy wheelbarrow suitable for your needs, you need to consider the number of wheels it has. The one wheel option tends to be lighter in weight and more manoeuvrable, while the two wheel version can carry more weight as is better balanced but is more awkward to move. Whichever you choose, you need to ensure that the wheel or wheels are sturdy and have good tyres. Some modern wheelbarrows even come with brakes to allow for safer usage.

The handles are also an important factor when looking to buy a wheelbarrow. You need to make sure the wheelbarrow doesn't have wooden handles as these are likely to splinter. As an alternative you can choose metal handles or a more comfortable option is the plastic handle which is often ergonomically designed with finger grips.

The final option in your choice of wheelbarrow is to have a traditional manually powered wheelbarrow or one powered by gas or electric. These are ideal if you are unable to lift or manoeuvre a wheelbarrow.

Whatever your final choice, wheelbarrows are one of the most useful tools in the garden or on a building site. They allow you to carry your things with ease and cover more ground quickly.

Garden Storage Bench

Is a Garden Storage Bench Right For You?

Author: Lupita Bonas

When choosing garden décor, many people forget about storage spaces. If you're looking for something to spice up your garden as well as provide hidden, uncluttered storage, then a garden storage bench may be right up your alley. Not only does it keep unattractive garden tools and supplies out of sight, it also provides unique décor for your garden area. Spending anywhere from $50 to $1000, a storage bench can be yours. With the large array of style choices available, there is a little something for everyone!

Garden storage benches come in all shapes and sizes. Backless benches look like a normal trunk or chest that opens up to reveal a storage area. These are usually made out of plastic or wicker, but wooden ones can be found as well. There are also fancier alternatives, such as benches with arms and backs that contain the storage drawers or cabinets underneath the seats. These can come with seating cushions or without, and come in many different styles and designs. There are even benches that have sliding tops, but these are more obvious as to what they're used for.

There is also a great variety in the materials that a garden storage bench can be made out of, from wicker and plastic to wood, metal, or even stone! Metal benches are not as common as the others, but they can be found if that is what you desire. Wicker and plastic types are generally cheaper and easier to clean and maintain, so if you're looking for a cheap, modern storage bench, this would be a good option. Stone benches are very uncommon, and usually have sliding tops to reveal the storage space below. If you're looking for an old, classical feel in your garden, grab a few of these. Wooden storage benches are by far the most popular or stylistically diverse, and there are many different types of wood to choose from. It is your choice as to what will compliment the design and aura of your garden area.
