Xylitol is a Sweetener?: What is Xylitol and Why is it Important to our Marietta Practice?

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that actually reduces plaque build up on teeth and can prevent tooth decay! Sounds almost too good to be true. Believe it or not, studies on this “xylitol concept” have been around for more than 30 years and have since been proven by independent research. Xylitol is a clear crystal that is extracted from plants and has little effect on blood sugar as well. It has a specific inhibition of the bacteria strep. mutans which is the main culprit in tooth decay. You can find xylitol added in gums, toothpaste and mouthrinses. You can even buy xylitol candy and sugar packets to put in your coffee! As dentists, its a sugar we can be proud of and we would be happy to tell you more about these health conscious products, let us know at your next appointment!

Our Marietta Dental Office Has Highly Trained Dental Assistants

A dental assistant works side by side with a dentist. They do everything from taking impressions and x-rays, to preparing operatorys. They explain procedures, sterilize instruments, and with an expanded duties certification, they have the education and expertise to do much more. Every dental assistant at Verde Pointe Dental Associates has the expanded duties certification, an accomplishment that makes us proud.

Dental assistants are a highly intricate part in helping the office deliver the best possible patient experience. They are the third and fourth hand of the dentist, helping procedures flow more smoothly. An expanded duties certification allows assistants to perform more tasks and often alone. After a dentist has drilled a tooth, an expanded duty assistant can place the matrix band, which helps to maintain your tooth’s structure and contacts between teeth. They can place bases, liners and begin the filling process of the tooth. They also, can now place gingival retraction cords, make provisional crowns, seal pits and seal fissures in teeth. The education gives assistants a better ability to explain dentistry to patients.

Verde Pointe Dental Associates strive to provide patients with the best possible care. The office is proud to announce all our dental assistants have completed the expanded duties program. Well done!

Marietta Dentists Use Sophisticated X-ray Technology to Diagnose Cavities, Toothaches and More

Our Marietta Dentists utilizes Logicon software technology with our digital radiograpahy which enables us to measure tooth decay .  The program measures the degree of shading that is present in the enamel and dentin layers on x-rays, which in turns measures the depth of tooth decay.  We are able to increase our level of detection which benefits the patient by allowing us to provide conservative treatment as soon as it is needed.  As a result a patient can get treatment for a tooth that needs a a small filling as soon as it is detected rather than realizing the tooth needs treatment when it is too late when the tooth may end up needing a root canal or extraction.

Emergency Dentistry, Root Canals, Extractions, And Your Marietta Dentist

Do you ever wonder what causes a dental toothache?  A toothache is usually a dental condition which refers to pain around the teeth or jaw.  Dental cavities, cracked teeth, exposed tooth root and gum disease, temporomandibular joint disorder, and impaction are the most common reasons toothache’s occur.   A toothache can range in severity from mild to sharp and excruciating.  Most toothaches can be heat or cold sensitive and even aggravated by chewing.  A dentist will perform an oral examination to determine the cause of discomfort which usually includes an x-ray that helps diagnose and determine the exact cause.  Once the problem is found, your dentist will give options to alleviate the pain.

Dental cavities are the most common cause of a toothache.  Cavities begin in the outer layers of the tooth called enamel and dentin.  The two layers protect the tooth’s inside living tissue called the pulp.  The pulp is where the nerve and blood vessel reside.  Bacteria in the mouth along with saliva produce an acid which can create a cavity by eroding the tooth.

Although, smaller cavities can usually be fixed with a simple dental filling, larger, deeper cavities sometimes require more work such as a root canal, crown or even extraction for cases more severe.  When a cavities penetrates the pulp, the tooth can become infected requiring the nerve to be removed with root canal therapy.  Although it is always better to keep teeth when possible, if a tooth is extracted, the infection usually clears up.

Gum disease is also a common cause of a toothache.  Tissue in the mouth can become inflamed by plaque that accumulates beneath and along the gum line.  The plaque is a combination of bacteria, food and saliva.  Early signs of disease produce bleeding of the gums, and later it advances to a more severe disease with bone loss, infection, receding gums and formation of deep gum pockets.  As a result, pain and swelling can occur.  Eventually, tooth loss will occur.  It is possible to treat gum disease by removing tartar and plaque with scaling and root planing, or subgingival curettage.  Both procedures require the dentist to use anesthesia and may be accompanied with a prescription for antibiotics.

Root canals remove infected dying tooth tissue by replacing it with a filling material.  Root canals are not always a guarantee, but are often used to try to save the tooth.  Worst case scenario extracting the tooth might be the only solution.

There are so many ways to prevent toothaches or cavities.  Routine check-ups with your dentist can help provide you with tips towards a good daily oral routine.  Brushing and flossing twice daily is vital to oral health.  It helps ensure you are removing harmful bacteria that could possibly cause a problem.   The electric toothbrush, the Sonicare is highly efficient at removing plaque and is an excellent defense against keep down the number of bacteria present in the oral cavity.

It is possible that a toothache is not originating from the mouth. Sometimes, pain in the mouth can be a symptom of a more serious problem, such as angina or heart attack, ear infections, sinus infection.  If you have been seen by a dentist, and he can not diagnose a problem, it is necessary see a medical doctor.
It is important to remember that routine check-ups really do impact oral health. Your Marietta dentist can remove tartar and plaque left behind by everyday brushing.  See the dentist on a regular basis.

Are Marietta Dental Veneers For You?

Marietta Dental Veneers

One of the most asked about smile changing procedures is our dental veneers.  “It is a procedure that can make an exciting difference in a person’s smile,” says Marietta dentist, Kirk Kimmerling DDS.

While many people are able to benefit from dental veneers, they must have a healthy foundation for a good result. If an advanced periodontal condition or unstable bite is present, veneers may not work well. People that have an overbite or flared out teeth, many times veneers add unwanted bulk to teeth giving an undesirable result.  On the other hand, patients with teeth that inclined slightly toward the tongue are the best candidates for dental veneers, since they won’t look as bulky when the veneers are placed.

Veneers can be extremely thin. However, adding even the thinnest veneer can sometimes make a smile look bulky. In such cases, we might recommend to our patients that the tooth be reduced or contoured prior to the placement of the veneer. Our trained dentists take a very conservative approach when reducing teeth, and will only recommend tooth reduction when it is necessary and in your best interest of your smile.

Our Marietta dentists understands that fear of the dentist is quite common. That is why we have designed our Marietta office with comfort in mind.  Just like our reputation, visiting our Marietta dental office is more than a “wow” experience. From the moment you enter our doors, you are welcomed by our art gallery, the sound of a soothing waterfall, and our amazingly beautiful office, all designed to help relieve anxiety. We seat patients at their appointed time, which doesn’t allow anxiety to build while waiting.  We have nitrous-oxide that can be used at any appointment.During your treatment, you will be pampered by our highly trained, certified dental assistants with warm blankets, headphones or television channel of choice for a more positive experience.  Your comfort is our concern.

At our Marietta dental office, everything we do is about helping you achieve the smile you desire while enjoying the process. Call our office to schedule a consultation on dental veneers today.  We would be happy to give you the smile you have always desired.

Let’s get educated on a few dental issues for better awareness for the future…

Tooth Decay is one of the most common dental issues.  The common name is a cavity.  Tooth decay can occur when plaque combines with starches or sugars eaten daily.  The combination between plaque with sugar or starch produces an acid that attacks tooth enamel. The only way to fix tooth decay is a dental visit.  Preventing tooth decay is simple;  brush away the bacteria living on teeth and gums, floss between teeth, make routine dental check-ups a priority, and avoid high sugar products.

Tooth Sensitivity can cause constant discomfort.  The discomfort usually occurs with cold drinks, hot drinks, sweets, ice cream or cold air.  Sometimes just brushing your teeth can cause discomfort.  The great news is that sensitivity can be helped.  Talk to your Marietta dentist to get help and away from this discomfort.

Bad Breath can be an embarrassing issue.  Halitosis (Bad Breath) can be caused from cavities, gum disease, bacteria on tongue, oral cancer, dry mouth or stomach problems.  Around 85% of people who suffer with halitosis probably have a dental condition.  If you feel you are suffering from halitosis, schedule a dentist visit.  They can help you figure out the road back to good breath.

Gum or periodontal disease causes the gums around the teeth to become swollen and infected.  It is one of the most common results in tooth loss for adults. Mouth sores can cause much discomfort.  The most common sores that occur are canker sores, cold sores, ulcers, thrush and fever blisters.  Most sores will disappear within two weeks and are nothing to be concerned with.  If you feel you have a sore that hasn’t disappeared after two weeks, make a dental appointment to get further advice.

Tooth erosion is caused when acid attacks the enamel of the tooth.  The result is the loss of tooth structure.  Sensitivity and cracked teeth can be signs and symptoms of tooth erosion.  Although tooth erosion is common, it can be easily prevented.  Make an appointment with your Marietta dentist for solutions.

Oral cancer can be very scary because it can be deadly.  It pertains to the mouth, lips and throat.  Studies have shown it affects millions of people with 300,000 new cases diagnosed worldwide yearly.  Much oral cancer be reversed if caught in early stages.  Routine dental check-ups can help ensure this issue isn’t present.

Toothaches are a very unpleasant dental issue.  They can be very painful and agonizing resulting in a necessary root canal or extraction of the tooth.  Most toothaches can be prevented with routine dental check-ups and proper daily oral hygiene.  If a toothache occurs, its important to get an immediate dental visit for advice and treatment.

Many people suffer from unattractive smiles.  An unattractive smile is not a dental problem that necessarily needs attention, but can be an emotional issue for people who aren’t happy with their smile.  Make an appointment with your Marietta dentist to discuss what you find unattractive with your smile.  Your dentist can give you options as to the right path for you to have a great attractive smile.

All of the issues that are discussed above can be prevented or fixed.  Brushing twice daily, flossing and routine dental check-ups are very important for prevention, and regular visits to the dentist can help fix most issues.  Start today and make your mouth a priority.
