(More customer reviews)I purchased just
recently, have used it in May when the weather started out cold
then quickly to super hot.Using the heater worked wonders. My
personal temp usually runs cold and I'm always trying to stay warm,
well with this model I found it wasn't lacking nor did I feel over
heated. For the rest of the month when the temps were hot my bedroom
of 130 sq. ft was quickly cooled, so much so I had a hard time
trying to find a temp where I wouldn't be too cold but I think I'm
finally getting the swing of things and found my comfort zone.I
still haven't figured out how using this machine equates in my
electrical bill since the first 1/2 of month was use of the heater
then a/c thereafter, and some days not used at all plus the a/c was
used almost all day but once I got that bill it wasn't too high it
was $92.00 (1 bdrm in NYC), $50.00 more than usual. Now that the
newness has worn off I'm only using it when I can't take the heat
at all for June and use my fan other times.I'm using it more like I
used my window unit that would cool my whole apartment.
As for the water leakage, it does leak a lot but I did the same as
Steve Mokris and propped up the unit on a old unfinished stool
cushion someone abandoned from my jr. high school wood working
class. :)I have a wash basin that catches the water and I usually
empty it about once or twice a day and I don't mind doing that -- I
think people are so lazy nowadays with all the modern conveniences
that for me getting my butt up and grabbing a basin to empty
doesn't bother me. lol
I would have gave a rating of 5 but I'm still unsure of the
electricity bill in comparison my 10,000 btu window unit which I'd
use July - September and my bill would be $130 - $150/mth for
electrical rates of .25 cents an hour for kWh in NYC.Con Ed has
raised prices so the rate is probably more like .30 cents per kWh
now. This unit is 12/A 1350W.If my electricity bills come in under
$100/$120 a month I'll be a happy camper.
I highly recommend this unit it really does a good job of cooling
and feels just like a window unit and cools fast.Yes it's heavy but
it has two slots on each side to grab hold to and it rolls.

Soleus Air PH4-12R-01 12,000-BTU Evaporative
Portable Air Conditioner with Heat Pump and Remote Control
Product Description:
For exceptional versatility and comfort throughout the year, this
four-in-one portable appliance functions as an air conditioner,
heater, fan, and dehumidifier. Use it as a 1350-watt air
conditioner with 12,000 BTUs of cooling power for staying
comfortable in the summer, then in the winter switch over to its
1160-watt heater mode, which uses Heat Pump technology to deliver
12,000 BTUs of heating power. The user-friendly electronic control
panel makes it easy to select the mode of operation, the ideal room
temperature from 61 to 88 degrees F, and the fan speed--low,
medium, or high. A handy remote control comes included, which
allows for changing the settings from across the room. The unit can
also function as an evaporative dehumidifier, removing up to 60
pints of moisture from the air a day to help maintain ideal comfort
levels. Its Auto mode provides added convenience where the unit
operates as a heater when the room temperature falls below 68
degrees F, as a dehumidifier when the room temperature sits between
68 and 80 degrees F, and as an air conditioner when the room
temperature reaches above 80 degrees F. Other highlights include
Sleep mode, a 24-hour automatic on/off programmable timer, optional
oscillation, and an easy-access permanent air filter. Best of all,
its portable design means there's no need for permanent
installation. Simply connect the exhaust hoses to an open window
using the included window-exhaust kit. The unit's efficient
self-evaporating technology means there's no need to continually
drain the unit. In extremely humid conditions, however,
condensation may collect in the built-in tank if it can't evaporate
fast enough. The compressor will automatically shut-off if the tank
reaches capacity, and a "full" indicator will alert users to the
need for emptying the tank. Accessories include two exhaust hoses,
two hose adapters, two window-kit adapters, a window kit with four
sliding panels, two air intake and outlet covers, and an owner's
manual. Ideal for the home or office as an air conditioner, heater,
fan, and dehumidifier, the appliance measures 18-1/2 by 19 by
32-1/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

(More customer reviews)We bought the
Honeywell HCM-6013i cool mist humidifier to replace a GermGuardin
humidifier that stopped working after 90 days of use. So far, this
unit is performing quite well.
According to the specification in the owner's manual, this unit is
capable of outputting 11 gallons per day (I'm assuming per 24
hours). Do not confuse this with the unit's water holding capacity.
In two separate tanks, the humidifier holds about a total of 3.5
gallons of water. And you will not notice any humidifying mist as
you might with other types of humidifier. This humidifier works by
the same principle as a swamp cooler.
I usually have the fan speed on low and the humidity level set on
auto at 35%. At these settings, I have to fill the water tanks
every one and a half day or so. The HCM-6013i built-in hygrometer
(humidity sensor) is no where near accurate. Although I have the
unit set on 35%, actual humidity measured by a separate and more
accurate hygrometer, measures 45%. I recommend buying a separate
hygrometer so that you can find the right humidity level. If you're
not as picky as I am, you can always go by feel and adjust the
humidity control up or down until you find your comfort level, to
where the unit turn on or off based on the setting.
This unit fits together from essentially four pieces; the base, the
motor housing, and the two water tanks. The pieces do not exactly
fit together that well. The design of this unit reminds me of
something that was made from the former USSR. It's clunky...but it
works. It has no problem keeping up the desired humidity level when
the AC is on and the outside relative humidity is 10% - 15%. It
draws water from one of the two tanks at a time. When either one of
the water tank is drained the unit makes a buzzing noise from the
empty lighter tank. It's a little annoying, but a little tab or
jolt usually resolves this buzzing noise.
I recommend buying a spare HC-14 replacement filter for this unit.
I already notice that within a day if not hours of use the
water-wicking filter mentioned was turning a little brown on the
top. I don't know if the browning of the filter is due to using tap
water for the humidifier or the air in my condo is that dirty. I
hope it's the former rather than the latter.
The manual states that using tap water is OK because the
water-wicking filter will absorb and retain the minerals in tap
water, while the Protec water cleaning cartridge will help fight
bacteria and other microbes in the water.
As mentioned above. This humidifier works about the same way as a
swamp cooler. In a dry and warm environment, this humidifier does
put out a noticeably cool breeze.
This product also boasts of having an "Air Washing Technology", and
an independently controlled air ionizer. I can't comment too much
about these features because I can't attest to how well they work.
Again some swamp coolers can also claim of being able to wash the
air as they cool...right? My gut feeling tells me that these
features are a bit gimmicky. Does it really "clean" the air in my
condo? Maybe. Does the air in my condo really need cleaning?
Sometimes.

damaged but UPS checked it out to make sure that the unit was not
damaged before delivering.
I like the ease of moving it from one room to another. The casters
roll smoothly. It cools a single room very quickly but is
noisy.
The window insert could use some rework. It needs to be beefed up
and perhaps some ribs to line it up with the window. It tends to
pop out from under the window because the duct is so much heavier
than the insert.

DeLonghi PAC T110P 11,000-BTU Portable Air
Conditioner with Integrated Dehumidifier
Product Description:
In addition to its 11,000-BTU cooling capacity, this sleek-looking
portable air conditioner also functions as a 60-pint dehumidifier
to help keep indoor air cool and comfortably dry. The independent
dehumidifier contains a built-in pump system that directs condensed
water up and out a window through an enclosed hose, so there's no
cumbersome bucket to empty. Even more, the air conditioner helps
purify the air thanks to its 3M Filtrete air filter, which contains
specially charged fibers that attract and capture tiny
microparticles of pollen and dust. The all-in-one air-treatment
center ensures ease of use and efficiency thanks to several
thoughtful design details. Its electronic control panel, with
soft-touch keys and an LED display, makes it simple to select the
room temperature and control all the functions, while the included
LCD remote control allows for programming the unit without having
to get up and walk across the room. The unit offers Boost, Sleep,
and Smart fan modes, and its 24-hour programmable timer can be set
to turn the unit on at a specific time--great for coming home to a
cool room at the end of the day. Other highlights include an
adjustable thermostat, motorized air-distribution louvers, an
adjustable humidistat, quiet operation due to the high-efficiency
compressor and components, and durable caster wheels and side
handles for portability. Accessories include an extra-large
professional caster kit and a window bracket and double exhaust
hose for energy-saving operation. Designed and engineered in Italy,
the 1500-watt air conditioner measures 16-1/7 by 19-1/2 by 37
inches.
From the Manufacturer
The Pinguino is easily portable thanks to its durable indoor and
outdoor castor wheels and side-carry handles.The built-in 60-pint
dehumidifier helps to keep indoor air cool and comfortably dry,
while the independent dehumidifier contains a De'Longhi patented
built-in pump system that directs condensed water up and out a
window through an enclosed hose, so there is never a bucket to
empty. The Pinguino features electrostatic air filtration from 3M.
The Filtrete filter contains specially charged fibers that attract
and capture tiny microparticles of pollen and dust that other
screen or foam filters miss. This allows you to not only cool the
air, but also purify it too. The unit also features unique no drip
technology. With this exclusive process, Pinguino uses condensation
and collected moisture to help cool the air.Excess vapor is then
discharged through the exhaust hose. And with an optional second
hose, the condenser's cooling air is taken from the outside,
increasing the efficiency of the unit. The unit includes the
following accessories: an extra-large professional caster kit and a
window bracket and double exhaust hose.

(More customer reviews)Plus:
The unit cools well.It is small and easy to move.
Minus:
The dehumidifier is fairly noisy and it runs when the unit is in
dehumidifier mode or in air conditioner mode. The compressor (which
only runs in air conditioning mode) is very quiet as is the fan.I
would not use this unit in a bedroom.
Installing the exhaust hose was a bit difficult as the hose did not
have any end coverings and was a tight fit into the widow and air
conditioner connectors.
The window slider kit is easy to install but the height is too
small. The slider is only a little bit bigger that the opening for
the window exhaust adapter. With the adapter in the slider does not
sit on the bottom of the window frame. In my window there is a
half-inch gap between the bottom of the slider and the bottom of
the window frame that has to be filled in.
BTW, the instructions for removing the unit from the packaging
material and box require you to destroy both so there isn't any way
to repack the unit if you need to ship it back.

(More customer reviews)UPDATE 5/5/2010:
This unit is still running as efficiently and effectively as ever.
We are very, very happy with our purchase.
---------------
About a month and a half ago, my husband and I purchased this at
our local Costco (because of good pricing and their great return
policy) after researching and reading mixed online reviews on MANY,
MANY portable air conditioners. He's in the Navy, so we're
currently living in Port Hueneme, CA (Southern CA near L.A.) right
on the ocean and the humidity is pretty high. We've used it on days
with temperatures ranging from ~78 to 86F and are still waiting for
a really hot day to hit. It might not happen this year, but it
certainly did last year. We use it in our upstairs
bedroom--approximately 180 square feet--with the door shut to keep
our cats out.
The results:
* Noise: Fantastic. We used to have one fan blowing on full-speed
in there. While you CAN hear this unit, it is quieter than the fan
was, by probably 50%. As another reviewer noted, you can hear a
little water trickling from time to time, but that doesn't really
bother us, and it's certainly not constant. We sleep like babies
with this unit about a foot away from the bed.
* Cooling: Again, top-notch. I really wasn't expecting much from a
portable after reading so many bad reviews for all of the portable
air conditioners we researched. On the day that we installed it, it
was 83F outside (and probably close to 90F in our bedroom) and,
being pessimistic in our expectations, we put it on the MegaCool
setting and left the bedroom, closing the door behind us. About 2
hours later, we headed up the stairs to check on it. About halfway
up the stairs, we could feel that the air was cooler than it had
been downstairs. In fact, the entire top floor of our townhouse
(approximately 500 square feet) was noticeably cooler, even with
the bedroom door closed. When we opened the bedroom door, it had
already dropped a good 10 to 15 degrees. We left it for a few more
hours, and when we went back in it was so cold that we got the down
comforter out to cuddle under as we slept. And sleep we did--better
than we had in ages. I think that 4 hours to go from 90F to what
felt like near 50F is very reasonable. Since then, we've kept it
between 67F and 70F.
* Remote: Very user friendly. You can also cover the sensor on the
remote with your hand and click the Power button to turn the remote
off without turning the air conditioner off--this elongates the
battery life.
* Dehumidifying: It's unbelievable how well this dehumidifies the
air here. Remember, we live right on the ocean, so it's always very
humid. I LOVE that my sheets no longer feel soggy when I sleep, and
that my husband and I can sleep touching without sticking to each
other. And if this tells you anything, my hair is really
wavy/curlyish, and when I sleep at night in the dehumidified
bedroom, it gets very close to perfectly straight. As soon as I go
down to the lower level of our townhouse, though, my hair
immediately starts curling. My husband tends to laugh at how
quickly the curls form once I leave the bedroom. I never had this
experience with centralized AC when I lived in Texas. My point? It
dehumidifies REALLY well.
* Draining: We've done this twice in the last month and a half and
probably could have gotten away with doing it once. A lot of the
water evaporates right out of the window, and the tank seems to
have a decent capacity. The machine will also automatically shut
itself off if the tank gets too full. The method is also pretty
easy. The drain is far enough off the floor that you can use a
bucket to empty the unit. One thing we noticed is that even though
it has an on/off valve, the off position doesn't seem to work. We
have to make sure the stopper is in securely no matter what setting
the valve is on.
* Construction: Seems to be quite durable, but not overly heavy. My
husband had a broken arm and I was able to drag it from the car and
up the stairs with minimal help from him. It was definitely heavy,
but it was doable (I'm 6', average to above-average strength for a
woman, and not too concerned about breaking a nail, though). Once
out of the box, the casters are a real plus when moving it.
* Installation: The installation instructions are a bit tedious and
not perfectly written, but it's pretty easy to figure out how to
assemble most of the unit without them if you have a decent amount
of common sense. The installation is still not a bed of roses, but
I don't think installing any other portable unit would be any
better. From my research, they all use similar methods, so I can't
really complain about this unit. Just an FYI, though: this unit is
designed for windows with solid wooden casements--the exhaust piece
needs to fit snugly against and screw into the casement. We had a
slight problem with this because we have windows that open
horizontally rather than vertically, and the casement isn't flat or
wooden--it's recessed and metal. We ended up having to make a
workaround--some measuring and a quick trip to the local lumber
yard, and we had a few plywood inserts. One fills in the recessed
casement and allowed us to screw the exhaust piece onto something
solid, the other braces the sliding part of the window up against
the unit. A bit of a pain, but not too bad nor too ugly.
* Other features: The adjustable louvers work very well. We like to
point them up at the ceiling while we sleep, giving nice cool air
and great circulation without freezing us out. The Plasmacluster
functionality is nice, but when it's on, the unit shows a very
BRIGHT blue light. We have difficulty sleeping with it on, so we
turn it off at night. Just a head's up in case you want to run
Plasmacluster at night--you may need to find a way to cover the
light up. [EDIT 5/5/2010: We have since discovered the nifty
"Lights" button on the remote control. This turns off the lights on
the unit without making you turn off the Plasmacluster
functionality, so no worries there any more.]
All in all, we're both so glad we bought this unit. We were mulling
over whether the expense would be worth it so we waited and thought
for a few months. We agree that we should have just gone ahead and
done it MONTHS ago! The summer would have been much more bearable,
and we would have been much better rested!!

(More customer reviews)My new 4200
WhisperKool by Vinotheque ran just fine. For 2 weeks. Then the
humidity rose, the drain didn't work, and much water damage
followed. An F or quality control. It's a sealed box too, so
servicing requires a Houdini, even for something as ridiculously
simple as a blocked drain hose, factory direct.
Vinotheque phone service is uninformed and insulting.
Thereapparently is no national service network so the only option
with a defective new unit is to place yourself into a robotic and
haughty assistant's hands, who cross examines with the attitude
that everything wrong with the product must be your doing, then
accomodate a demand for $50 for shipment of a "loaner", then when
you get it uninstall the new unit, replace it with the loaner (all
at your cost, folks) ship Vinotheque your defective new unit, wait
for their verdict, then go through the cycle again. They'll tell
you how much more you owe. The water damage. Well, too bad, that's
your problem too.
In sum, it's as stupid and insensitive as it gets. I was fortunate
to receive pro bono, competent assistance specially arranged by the
retail firm from which I purchased the unit and the problem was
corrected on site (as the Vinotheque henchlady attacked by email -
- my warranty thusly would be invalidated). Learn from this lesson
and beware - - WhisperKool's densely fine print is a "gotcha"; the
warranty is with Vinotheque upon shipment to you. You definitely
don't want to go there.
This appalling company is the worst with which I have ever dealt.
Avoid the trap. Chill out some another way.

speed at which the air comes out, you simply cannot do anything.I
called the 800 number and was told that the remote was on BACKORDER

then! When asked why this was, the answer was that the product
needs to be shipped from CHINA and that in order for the 30-90 days
to begin, they had to have my proof of purchase first! We all know
that large corporations take several days to several weeks to
process anything, so to add this on top of the fact it takes that
long makes me never want to purchase another Haier product again. My
suggestion is that you do the same with customer service like

(More customer reviews)I've had this Sharp
portable air conditioner for a couple of years now.Without a doubt,
it's proved to be worth every cent I spent on it.I had another name
brand air conditioner that died not long after I purchased it and
this was the replacement. These units are heavy and delivery right
to your door is a real plus!
My favorite feature is the Mega Cool feature. If you want to cool
down in a hurry simply putting the air conditioner on this setting
will start cooling down a room in minutes (I personally sit right
in front of it during this process!).
It has a remote control with a digital readout. You can put it on a
timer, operate the fan, louvers, dehumidifier, etc. The vertical
louvers need to be adjusted manually. The filters pull out readily
and are easy to clean. When not using the remote there is an
indentation in the back for secure storage. This is a very sleek,
attractive unit and I prefer it to the white. The booklet included
is very comprehensive, well illustrated and comes in English and
Spanish.
I have had this unit in two different settings. It obviously is
meant to be set up in double-hung and sliding sash windows, but we
were able to set it up in a sliding glass door (a little ingenuity
goes a long way).We cut a pine board vertically to fit the opening
between the wall track and the door and cut a hole for the window
exhaust adapter. After the "installation" we used duct tape around
the adapter. After we closed the door we simply replaced the stick
in the track with a shorter one so the door could not be easily
opened from the outside (if you are in a high crime area I wouldn't
recommend this set up).
I had two different portable air conditioners before this one and
I'm quite pleased with this unit!

(More customer reviews)This mat takes a
long time to soak in water and the mat is not even. The bumpy strips
of gell are a result and there is no smooth surface. The mat is very
wet after soaking it in water and heavy. My dog refused to even go
on it.I'm returning it!

(More customer reviews)I bought this for a
feral cat I care for to help her keep cool in the Phoenix summer
heat. She likes it and uses it a lot.She doesn't like to lay on it
when it's wet, though (it takes a couple hours for the surface to
dry out after soaking). Item seems a little pricey for what you get
(the mat is small), but the cat is happy and the mat does what it
promises, so I think it was money well spent.

(More customer reviews)Should have ripped
up 27 dollars and remained far cooler under the collar. Dumbly got
the 2pk. Opened one, tried it. The barely discernible wind from the
fan does indeed blow not forwards, but backwards, however that gets
your fingers caught and stops the action. The spray spits drops and
dribbles down your fingers and arm. Could easily soak everything in
one's pocket book or pocket. Now for the kicker. Check out
supplier's return policy. Actually, one should do this before
purchasing anything, but in this case, it's a lost cause, getting
even a small share of my money back, what with the restocking and
shipping fees.

(More customer reviews)This is
manufactured overseas, therefore temp adjustments are via a Celcius
scale, not Fahrenheit, even though it shows Fahrenheit. Therefore
adjustments are in 2 degree f (68, 70, 72, 74, etc).You can't
select 73 degrees f.It does not offer full control over fan
speed/sound.Even on low speed, the fan will accelerate when the
unit is more then 2 degrees higher than the set temp. The remote is
IR, not RF and needs clear line of sight to the unit.Otherwise, it
does cool well.My kilowatt meter showed that it used about 50 cents
an 8 hour period (10cent KWH) to cool a room about 8 degrees cooler
than ambient temp... It is by no means a energy star product,
however I do not think any of these portable units meet that
standard. It does cool a medium sized room well (19x12) with a
vaulted ceiling.Given that the sound level increases, even with the
fan set on low, this may not be the best air conditioner for a
bedroom.I use it in my home office during the day and turn the
other thermostats off/up, so it works for me.
