Liverpool won the match of sunday 5379

Chelsea debut ended in the disappointment of defeat and also a failure to last 1 hour 30 minutes against his former club as Liverpool's revival under Kenny Dalglish continued with victory at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea's £50m British record buy from Liverpool cut a subdued figure and was well shackled before being replaced by Salomon Kalou after 66 minutes. Hopefully was not enough to delight the Liverpool fans who taunted their former idol mercilessly and brandished banners to demonstrate their displeasure in the types of his departure, their joy was complete three minutes after Torres' exit when Raul Meireles pounced to supply Dalglish his fourth successive win. Meireles took advantage of a mix-up between Chelsea keeper Petr Cech and Branislav Ivanovic to score his fourth goal in five games when he completed Steven Gerrard's cross along at the far post. Chelsea's loss represented a missed opportunity after Manchester United slipped recommended to their first league defeat from the season at Wolves, Ancelotti's side remaining 10 points behind the leaders. Liverpool, in comparison, move into the most notable six the very first time this season. The win wasn't any greater than the rejuvenated Reds deserved - and will also came as being a relief to Maxi Rodriguez, who hit the bar when almost around the goalline inside the first half. Liverpool's resilience and organisation ensured this hadn't prove costly, however it would be a forgettable learn to Torres' Chelsea career and provided early evidence that coach Carlo Ancelotti has work to complete to integrate the Spaniard into his attacking system, after also including Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka inside of a lop-sided starting line-up. The style whereby Liverpool achieved this triumph only furthers Dalglish's statements to get the manager's job with a permanent basis, and it's also now surely only a couple of time before this formality is confirmed. And yes it was done without necessity for £23m striker Luis Suarez, who remained an unused substitute as Liverpool controlled affairs for just a large portion of the overall game. Chelsea looked unbalanced, lacked width and were eventually reduced to playing into Liverpool's hands using a succession of aimless long balls which are mopped on top of the the least fuss, into the home fans' increasing frustration. Anelka was utilised inside a deeper role however it was a less than enjoyable fit and Liverpool, boosted by an exceptional performance from Jamie Carragher on his first appearance since November after shoulder surgery, neutralised Chelsea comfortably. The centre-back snuffed out Torres' best chance which has a trademark tackle within the first half and that he also fired over early on after being inadvertently found by Maxi. Torres, loved by Liverpool's fans not too way back when, was greeted with hostility the other banner read: "He Who Betrays Will Always Walk Alone." And he walked alone because he was become increasingly popular midway in the second half, although there will probably be a great deal more into the future because of this gifted striker once he finds his feet at Stamford Bridge and Ancelotti uncovers a system which fits his talents. While Dalglish kept Suarez for the bench, Chelsea had no hesitation in handing Torres a quick start against his former team-mates. The reception with the visiting supporters was predictably angry, but there initially were warm exchanges between Torres and Liverpool's players through pre-match handshake. Maxi almost lengthy the side of companionship too far when he directed the run-a-way cross on to Torres from the opening minute, even so the striker squandered the opportunity of making a dream start when his rising drive flew off target. There was soon another hint associated with his risk as well as it took a timely intervention from Carragher to divert his goalbound shot after he was played in by Drogba. Liverpool were a lot more than holding their own and ended the half within the ascendancy. They must have taken charge right after the half-hour when Gerrard's cross evaded Chelsea's defenders and reached Maxi in front of a wide open goal lower than six yards out. To general amazement, and the very obvious anguish of Dalglish inside the technical area, he managed to hit the bar and hand Chelsea a reprieve. The hosts were struggling for making a direct impact but Anelka raised a subdued Stamford Bridge's spirits which has a low shot that flew inches wide before Torres' game arrived at a conclusion after 66 minutes when he was replaced by Kalou. Torres' exit - a decision by Ancelotti that came as no surprise - was met with delight by Liverpool's fans plus they had even more provocke celebrate if they went ahead just after. Chelsea keeper Cech and Ivanovic had already suffered one communication breakdown that generated angry words between pair plus the second proved more costly as Liverpool took full advantage. Dirk Kuyt's presence in the vicinity of Gerrard's cross created uncertainty and Meireles was perfectly placed to attain and continue his rich vein of form. As Chelsea pressed Liverpool almost struck again with 10 mins left, substitute Fabio Aurelio cutting inside from your left and forcing a fine save from Cech at his near post. In contrast, Chelsea provided Liverpool without the need of real alarms and also a beaming Dalglish punched mid-air in triumph and embraced his backroom staff with the final whistle. Boss Chelsea Madness £50 Million For Fernando Torres 9647

Using the history books and the club's supporters, Chelsea FC was founded in 1905. Ask every other football fan and also answer you'll receive should have a 98-year discrepancy. The West Londoners, as many supporters of the Premier League will confirm, truly took place in June of 2003 if the 50th richest man on the earth, Roman Abramovich, decided that owning a soccer club was by far of the best ways to earn instant legitimacy. That may stick in the craw of the Blues faithful, but the record books completely back up that statement. From 1905 until 2003 BA (before Abramovich), Chelsea won nine major trophies at a mind-boggling average of just under one for each decade of existence. From 2003 until 2010, the story has been somewhat different, as the trophy cabinet at Stamford Bridge has added an extension or two with eight major trophies making the trip to the Russian's favorite London dacha. From your beginning, Abramovich caused it to be specific to the ruling classes of English football that the game would no longer be level. He would be playing a different game. His game would be based solely on money and with that the ability to attract the world's best players and managers. The club's transfer record would be smashed repeatedly on the best-of-the-best as firstly, the loveable but hapless Claudio Ranieri tried to build an all-conquering squad. His replacement, Jose Mourinho, may not have been quite as loveable, but there can be no doubt that it was the 'Special One' who earned the mandatory mentality for success and, despite his acrimonious departure from the Bridge, that thirst for winning has yet to be fully quenched. On the subject of being quenched, the trophy that has continued to elude the Russian despite a brief 2008 flirtation in Moscow is the one with 'big ears.' This, combined with advent of the cost-effective crunch in 2007/08, did seem to curtail some of his lavish expenditure and his love of everything Blue. But on Monday, that all changed. Roman Abramovich and Chelsea are back and they're changing the rules ... again. When you spend $114 million on two players within One day you are sending a significant message to your competitors those funds is no object concerning the burning desire of winning trophies. Whether this is good business or not, only time and silverware will tell. It's hard to think that Fernando Torres and David Luiz were bought to win the Premier League as that horse has bolted the barn. The 10-point gap involving the Blues and Manchester United is surely too large, however 'big ears' is definitely a realistic possibility. This new lavish era truly begins on Sunday right here on the Fox Soccer Channel when Chelsea meet Liverpool for the 28th time in just over seven seasons (coverage begins LIVE on FSC at 10 a.m. ET). Like lovers who know how to push each other's buttons, these know just where you can poke but it appears the fact that Blues have finally managed to inflict a wound on the Reds that will leave a permanent scar. The teasing of Steven Gerrard in 2005 while irritating didn't leave any lasting damage, though the poaching of Torres is another matter altogether. And although Liverpool fans will claim there are 80 million the reason why it doesn't hurt -- I beg to differ. Can you think about the feeling of having your wife, your girlfriend, your best friend or maybe even your kids just up and leave you because someone came along with a bagful of cash and a couple of promises? All this after you've showered them with nothing but love and adoration even during the difficult times. I'd feel used, dirty, outraged and possibly a little foolish because It's my opinion that you loved us greater than that you said you did. I also wonder looking at this behavior just how hard the Shed will fall for Torres? Sunday will provide the answer and with Torres already making cooing noises about the match saying, "I will do my best and hopefully I can score," and "it is like destiny," an already explosive atmosphere will be raised up to levels we've probably never witnessed. Over the past a couple of years, Manchester City had pushed Chelsea aside as the economic force in England, but on Monday we got Roman Abramovich eat his spinach, turn into Popeye and flex his muscles. Big shock Liverpool dumped gain 2-1 Blackpool 9438

DJ Campbell took good thing about some woeful defending as Blackpool completed the league double over Liverpool. The Reds tookbeginning lead when Fernando Torres fired a fierce drive high in the present net after he was fed in by full-back Martin Kelly.Property side equalised shortly after when Gary Taylor-Fletcher made the best of slack marking to slot home. And Campbell handed Blackpool victory after he was left unmarked in the six-yard area to nod in.The marking for the goal was as shocking as Liverpool's damaged confidence as the match progressed. It began well for Reds manager Kenny Dalglish, who was taking charge of his first league match in 12 years.Torres' performance level declined like his team-mates' during the 90 minutes, but his goal in the second minute proved that if the ball is played behind the defence then he is still the striker you would bank on.It took him only two minutes to light up the night at Bloomfield Road when he smashed in high past keeper Richard Kingson after he was fed in by full-back Kelly. That settled Liverpool for a short while but it did not blunt Blackpool's spirit. The men in tangerine gamely battled for every first and second ball in midfield and were rewarded for their pressing 10 minutes after Liverpool's opener.Meireles was the victim of Blackpool's hustling on this occasion giving the ball away to the impressive Vaughan who slipped in Taylor-Fletcher. The striker sold Agger with the best dummy of the night before placing his shot past Pepe Reina. The forward celebrated the goal by running to the touchline and lifting up a T-shirt that read '4 Butch you Bluenose RIP' in tribute to Macclesfield player Richard Butcher who died this week. The goal seemed to unsettle Liverpool who began to seem like the shaky side we have become accustomed to this holiday season.Campbell ought to have scored two on the night but missed with a header from four yards at the far post before Taylor-Fletcher came close to adding a second himself when he curled an effort over the stranded Reina who should have been punished for a poor clearance. The pain continued for Liverpool after the break when Reina was forced to palm away a stinging 20-yard striker effort from Charlie Adam, who had recovered from worrying fall in the first half. The Liverpool keeper was then called into action once more, tipping Vaughan's effort over the bar after the wily midfielder created space for himself in the box.As lax as Liverpool's defence was, Blackpool's backline was rigid. In the first half they cut out final balls to Meireles, one of Liverpool's best players, on two occasions and after the break the brilliant Craig Cathcart got enough of his headed clearance to prevent Torres from planting into the net at the far post.Kingson also played his part when he made a good save low to denied Dirk Kuyt's placed effort. With what little pressure from Liverpool there was absorbed, Blackpool headed the other end and scored their second which proved to be the winner. The Reds' undoing was caused by a diagonal ball from the right which was nodded into the six-yard area by Ian Evatt and finished off by Campbell. The victory sees Blackpool not only achieve their first double over Liverpool since the 1946/47 season but more significantly sees the Seasiders leapfrog their opponents in the table with a game in hand Highlight Blackpool 2-1 Liverpool 12-Jan-2011 Other highlight match

Ronaldo de Assís Moreira (born 21 March 1980 in Porto Alegre), commonly known as Ronaldinho (Brazilian Portuguese:or Ronaldinho Gaúcho is a Brazilian footballer who plays for Italian Serie A club Milan and the Brazilian national team. He is a free-kick specialist and has exceptional dribbling ability.Ronaldinho, Portuguese for "Little Ronaldo," is known in Brazil by the nickname "Gaúcho," in order to distinguish him from Ronaldo, who was already called "Ronaldinho" in Brazil. Ronaldo simply went by his first name upon his move to Europe, thereby allowing Ronaldinho to drop the "Gaúcho" and remain simply as Ronaldinho.Prior to his move to Milan, he played for Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona, with whom he won his first Champions League in 2006 and he won the Ballon d'Or in 2005. He became a Spanish citizen in January 2007 Ronaldinho's career began with the Grêmio youth squad. He made his senior side debut during the 1998 Copa Libertadores. In 2001, Arsenal expressed interest in signing Ronaldinho, but the move collapsed after he could not obtain a work permit because he was a non-EU player who had not played enough international matches. He considered playing on loan with Scottish Premier League side St. Mirren, which never happened due to his involvement in a fake passport scandal in Brazil. Highlight soccer Liverpool 2-1 Bolton W 01-Jan-2011 9277

Joe Cole came off the bench to score a contested late winner as Liverpool fought back from a goal down to seal a much-needed win over Bolton at Anfield.Under-fire Reds boss Roy Hodgson cut a dejected figure as Kevin Davies headed Bolton in front just before half-time.Liverpool replied shortly after the break when Fernando Torres volleyed home from Steven Gerrard's pass.Cole was introduced on 82 minutes and tapped in at the death from what seemed an offside position to grab the points. The result sees Liverpool pull six points clear of the relegation zone, rising from 12th to ninth, while Bolton drop to seventh. It was a dramatic end to a tense encounter and although Bolton may complain bitterly about Cole's strike, Liverpool are sure to toast a crucial three points. There seemed a greater urgency about Liverpool with Gerrard on the pitch and they were denied by the woodwork when a Maxi header from Dirk Kuyt's right-wing centre looped on to the crossbar.Yet Bolton were holding out fairly comfortably and their day got a whole lot better when Kevin Davies pounced shortly before half-time for the Trotters' first goal at Anfield since 2003.Fabio Aurelio, starting his first league match this season in place of Paul Konchesky, fouled Rodrigo Moreno on the Bolton right and Davies muscled his way ahead of Glen Johnson to power home Taylor's inviting free-kick.It was a goal that drew anger from the terraces but Liverpool should have been level within a couple of minutes, with Leiva Lucas prodding wide from a Kuyt cross when it looked harder to miss than score.Liverpool now had the wind in their sails and Torres came close to giving his side the lead. An injury to Raul Meireles meant Gerrard was introduced on 21 minutes but it was the visitors who appeared more likely to break the deadlock, with Taylor curling a free-kick narrowly wide from 25 yards and Zat Knight heading wide from Johan Elmander's cross. The Spaniard was released by Gerrard and cut in from the left before fizzing a low effort narrowly wide of the far post.Jaaskelainen then stood tall to deny Gerrard and although the rebound appeared to strike Mark Davies on the arm, referee Kevin Friend waved away Liverpool's appeals for a penalty.Liverpool continued to probe and Torres volleyed wide from another accurate Gerrard cross, while at the other end Mark Davies shot powerfully at Pepe Reina in a rare Bolton attack. But the pressure finally told as Gerrard's deep cross from the right was bundled towards goal by Maxi and Cole tapped in for his first league goal since joining Liverpool from Chelsea last summer.Bolton's protests came to nothing and despite pushing for an even later equaliser - Reina saving well from substitute Ivan Klasnic - their efforts came to nothing. All of this surely made the game an absolute must-win for Liverpool and, having won 10 of their previous 11 home Premier League meetings with Bolton, the omens were good.Captain Gerrard dropped to the bench after playing 90 minutes in midweek following six weeks out with a calf injury, but his side got off to an encouraging start - Torres looking particularly lively. And the Spaniard was at the heart of a move that saw Liverpool threaten to open the scoring, his shot deflecting to the back post where Maxi Rodriguez volleyed across goal and Matt Taylor slid in to avert the danger. Lawros Premier League predictions 01-01-2011 3484

Lawros Premier League predictions 01-01-2011 West Brom v Man Utd (1245 GMT) West Brom had a poor Christmas, losing twice, and they have started to concede some daft goals. Manchester United are not the team you want to be facing when you are looking to turn things round either. I just feel this United team has got the bit between their teeth a little bit at the moment, although they were obviously disgruntled about the way they conceded a late equaliser against Birmingham on Tuesday: Prediction: 0-2 Liverpool v Bolton Where do you start with Liverpool? It is a strange situation there at the moment because the majority of their fans have not taken to their manager Roy Hodgson. It is unusual, because normally at Anfield the supporters always give people a lot of time. For me, Hodgson's biggest problem is not just that his side have lost games, but his lack of willingness to commit players forward. It is puzzling because he is losing games anyway, especially away from home, by being so rigid and defensive. On top of that, they were very poor against Wolves on Wednesday too. A lot of teams come to Anfield and man-mark Liverpool - looking to have 10 singular battles - and if Steven Gerrard cannot get himself free and Fernando Torres is kept quiet then they have no answer to it.It does make things difficult but it is something with which they have to cope. For a start, Hodgson could get his full-backs forward and give his midfield players more licence to attack too.Bolton were a little bit unlucky against Chelsea, who were always going to win eventually, even if it was a scrappy performance by the Blues. On form, Wanderers are favourites but this is quite a difficult one to call because I think there might be a bit of a positive response from the home fans after Hodgson's call this week for them to forget about him and start getting behind the team.I think Bolton might just go there thinking 'we can win this' and if they are a little bit more open as a consequence then it might just give Liverpool the help they need. The Reds might have been ring rusty after such a long lay-off before they played Wolves too so, although that was a very bad defeat, at least they should have more of their edge back for this one :Prediction: 2-1 Man City v Blackpool It is unbelievable how many away wins Blackpool have had already this season - I was at Eastlands for Manchester City's victory over Villa earlier in the week and when I heard the Seasiders had won at Sunderland - their fifth on their travels - I just thought 'how do they keep doing it?'.It is brilliant to see and an outstanding achievement. Even speaking as a Preston fan, I think they have been a real breath of fresh air.Blackpool boss Ian Holloway's side have fantastic attitude and spirit, and belief in the way they play - they do not change their style away from home; they just keep going for it. I know Sunderland created a host of chances but the Seasiders are prepared to gamble with that and say 'right, you are going to have some openings against us but we will definitely have some against you'.They pushed City all the way at Bloomfield Road in October and could easily have won that game. However, I think it might be a bit different for them coming to Manchester because City have the players to hurt teams but they give very few opportunities and, defensively, are difficult to open up Prediction: 2-0

Report FC Twente vs Tottenham 4836

Draw sees Spurs top group Tottenham capped an unforgettable Champions League Group A campaign with another thriller as they secured top spot despite a 3-3 draw at FC Twente. No matter how Harry Redknapp's men fare in the knockout stage, the manner in which they have gone about getting there is the stuff of Hollywood and it was no exception. Needing to win to be certain of finishing above Inter Milan, Spurs led three times through a calamitous Peter Wisgerhof own goal and Jermain Defoe's first strikes since August. Each advantage was quickly cancelled out, through a controversial twice-taken Denny Landzaat penalty and goals from Roberto Rosales and Nacer Chadli, but a draw proved enough as Inter lost at Werder Bremen. Harry Redknapp kept to his word to field some fringe players, with Vedran Corluka making his first appearance for more than two months and Niko Kranjcar handed a rare start, while there were recalls for the fit-again Jermaine Jenas and Roman Pavlyuchenko. Despite performing heroics in their maiden season in the competition, Tottenham had not recorded an away victory and Dutch champions Twente had lost only once at home in more than a year. And although already assured a Europa League spot, they had not forgotten September's controversial 4-1 defeat at White Hart Lane. They certainly began like they were out for vengeance, Wout Brama's volley forcing an acrobatic parry from Heurelho Gomes and Theo Janssen curling a free-kick narrowly over. But they shot themselves in the foot in spectacular fashion in the 12th minute when 40-year-old goalkeeper Sander Boschker produced a near air shot on Wisgerhof's backpass and watched in horror as the ball span into the net. The moment was celebrated by a pocket of Spurs fans Twente had housed near their own supporters, sparking a furious response from some behind the goal. They were much happier 10 minutes later as the hosts levelled in circumstances almost as bizarre as saw them concede. Rosales hit a rocket of a volley that smashed into Benoit Assou-Ekotto - and against his arm, according to referee Carlos Velasco Carballo, who pointed to the spot. Landzaat beat Gomes to his right but Velasco Carballo ordered a retake, which the midfielder put straight down the middle. There was more woe for Spurs when Jenas went down with what appeared a recurrence of his calf problem. He took his time leaving the field, giving the referee little option but to book him, meaning the midfielder will be suspended for the last-16 first leg. Aaron Lennon eventually came on to replace him for the final 10 minutes of the half, with Kranjcar moving into the middle. Twente might have taken the lead four minutes before the break after Marc Janko shanked a shot wide when Wisgerhof was much better placed. But Defoe also flicked over the top with the final kick of the half after a trademark run and cross from Gareth Bale. The striker put Spurs back ahead within two minutes of the restart after Douglas failed to clear Bale's cross. Lennon pounced with a delightful reverse pass which Defoe coolly clipped over Boschker. Chadli flicked a corner too close to Gomes, though it was looking good for Spurs as Werder Bremen took a 2-0 lead in their game with Inter. Yet again though, Tottenham's advantage lasted barely 10 minutes as Twente equalised in the 56th minute when Rosales bulleted a header past Gomes from Janssen's cross. This time parity lasted only three minutes as Wilson Palacios won the ball inside the Twente half, raced clear and saw his shot parried straight to Defoe, who made no mistake on the rebound. Chadli then made it three goals in eight minutes with a stunning 25-yard free-kick as the home side incredibly equalised for a third time. They nearly took the lead for the first time in the 70th minute, Brama's curler forcing a fine save from Gomes, who was then almost caught out by Janssen's near-post corner. Both sides made a change when Dario Vujicevic came on for Janko and Robbie Keane replaced Pavlyuchenko. Twente almost scored a second own goal when Douglas deflected Bale's low cross against the post. Kranjcar hobbled off with four minutes remaining to be replaced by Peter Crouch and there was an ugly finish to the game after Spurs refused to kick the ball out following an injury to Luuk de Jong.

Service the opening gun of tennis 3742

Service the opening gun of tennis Service is the opening gun of tennis. It is putting the ball in play. The old idea was that service should never be more than merely the beginning of a rally. With the rise of American tennis and the advent of Dwight Davis and Holcombe Ward, service took on a new significance. These two men originated what is now known as the American Twist delivery. From a mere formality, service became a point winner. Slowly it gained in importance, until Maurice E. M'Loughlin, the wonderful "California Comet," burst across the tennis sky with the first of those terrific cannon-ball deliveries that revolutionized the game, and caused the old-school players to send out hurry calls for a severe footfault rule or some way of stopping the threatened destruction of all ground strokes. M'Loughlin made service a great factor in the game. It remained for R. N. Williams to supply the antidote that has again put service in the normal position of mere importance, not omnipotence. Williams stood in on the delivery and took it on the rising bound. Service must be speedy. Yet speed is not the be-all and end-all. Service must be accurate, reliable, and varied. It must be used with discretion and served with brains. Any tall player has an advantage over a short one, in service. Given a man about 6 feet and allow him the 3 feet added by his reach, it has been proved by tests that should he deliver a service, perfectly flat, with no variation caused by twist or wind, that just cleared the net at its lowest point (3 feet in the centre), there is only a margin of 8 inches of the service court in which the ball can possibly fall; the remainder is below the net angle. Thus it is easy to see how important it is to use some form of twist to bring the ball into court. Not only must it go into court, but it must be sufficiently speedy that the receiver does not have an opportunity of an easy kill. It must also be placed so as to allow the server an advantage for his next return, admitting the receiver puts the ball in play. Just as the first law of receiving is to, put the ball in play, so of service it is to cause the receiver to fall into error. Do not strive unduly for clean aces, but use your service to upset the ground strokes of your opponent. Service should be hit from as high a point as the server can COMFORTABLY reach. To stretch unnecessarily is both wearing on the server and unproductive of results. Varied pace and varied speed is the keynote to a good service. The slice service should be hit from a point above the right shoulder and as high as possible. The server should stand at about a forty-five degree angle to the baseline, with both feet firmly planted on the ground. Drop the weight back on the right foot and swing the racquet freely and easily behind the back. Toss the ball high enough into the air to ensure it passing through the desired hitting plane, and then start a slow shift of the weight forward, at the same time increasing the power of the swing forward as the racquet commences its upward flight to the ball. Just as the ball meets the racquet face the weight should be thrown forward and the full power of the swing smashed into the service. Let the ball strike the racquet INSIDE the face of the strings, with the racquet travelling directly towards the court. The angle of the racquet face will impart the twist necessary to bring the ball in court. The wrist should be somewhat flexible in service. If necessary lift the right foot and swing the whole body forward with the arm. Twist slightly to the right, using the left foot as a pivot. The general line of the racquet swing is from RIGHT to LEFT and always forward. At this point and before I take up the other branches of serving, let me put in a warning against footfaulting. I can only say that a footfault is crossing or touching the line with either foot before the ball is delivered, or it is a jump or step. I am not going into a technical discussion of footfaults. It is unnecessary, and by placing your feet firmly before the service there is no need to footfault. It is just as unfair to deliberately footfault as to miscall a ball, and it is wholly unnecessary. The average footfault is due to carelessness, over-anxiety, or ignorance of the rule. All players are offenders at times, but it can quickly be broken up.
