site ranked at the top of Google search results within a relatively
short period of time. The equation is simple, but the
implementation and the details involved are difficult:

put aside a 15-minute free consultation with you to teach you a
trick or two about Google SEO. I will also discuss the details of
our SEO program and give you a realistic time-frame of how fast we

A record-breaking 750
million photos were uploaded to Facebook over New Year’s weekend,
the social network
announced Tuesday afternoon. The news follows a much
bigger announcement made Monday: namely, that Facebook

has
received $450 million in a new round of funding
from Goldman Sachs and $50 million from Russian investment firm
Digital Sky Technologies. Photos is arguably Facebook’s most
popular feature, and one that the social network has improved
through a number of product updates this year. Most notably,
Facebook began displaying
“related photos” on a right-hand sidebar to
encourage further photo exploration (and page views) in May, and in
late September, users were able to upload
high-resolution photos to the network, as well as
view full-size photos in the News Feed. The last major update,
released in October, brought
drag-and-drop album organization to Photos, one
of the most-requested features for the Photos product. It’s no
surprise that Facebook is breaking new records given
the
massive acceleration of user registrations in 2010,
but the improvements to the product, we think, can also be
attributed to its growing success.

Over the New Year
holiday,
WordPress issued a challenge to its blogger-users:
Write and publish one post a day (or a week) throughout 2011. For
non-professional and personal bloggers, writing and posting every
day can be a tall order, so the good folks
at WordPress

have launched
The Daily
Post, a guide with daily tidbits of “inspiration, encouragement
and advice about blogging.” Any user who wants to participate in
the challenge simply needs to state his intentions then tag posts
with “postaday2011″ or “postaweek2011″ throughout the year.
Blogging more is a fairly common resolution among the digerati; in
fact, it recently came up in a
poll
we conducted about tech-related
goals for 2011. Quite a few users said they plan to consume less
social media and create more content of their own in the coming
year. WordPress’ Daily Post seems like a good enough place to
start. Its suggestions for evocative post topics are great
springboards for thoughtful writing. WordPress users also have the
“Press This” bookmarklet for quick, Tumblr

-like posting and a slew
of
mobile apps for on-the-go blogging, especially
great for posting images. Have you set a blogging goal for 2011?
Will you be participating in the WordPress daily or weekly
challenges?

Engaging in social media is about being extremely open, creative
and flexible. To stay competitive online, brands need to be
investing in social media as a way to extend themselves to their
customers. While advertising and cultivating an image are still
important, it’s interaction that creates
loyal
customers. Using social media to show customers that your business
is connected to what they say, think and feel about your products
can amplify your brand’s message. We’ve compiled a list of five big
brands that are most engaged in social media, and that go to
extensive lengths to connect with consumers. Add your own thoughts
on which brands are ahead of the curve in the comments below.

Starbucks is on just about
every corner in the real world, and that’s the same strategy the
company has taken online as well. When it comes to a web presence,
Starbucks has made its mark on
Twitter
,
Facebook
,
YouTube
,
Foursquare
, mobile apps and with
its own social network, My Starbucks Ideas. The company dominates
the social media landscape, creating active and engaging profiles
on a variety of platforms. And according to
some
reports, Starbucks is the most engaged brand using social media
for a few years running. Take a quick look at the coffee
giant’s
Twitter page, and you’ll see the company has just
more than 1 million followers. The next thing you’ll notice is that
there’s a lot of conversation going on. Starbucks is keeping
busy
responding to mentions,
apologizing for bad experiences, and just carrying
on some interesting conversations with its followers. Meanwhile
on
Facebook, more than 15 million people “Like” the
brand. And Starbucks is trying to make buying its product as
integrated and seamless as possible. Take, for example,
the
Starbucks Card Facebook application it introduced
this past April, which allows customers to manage their Starbucks
Card accounts from within the social network. The company
also
recently announced that customers could now “Give a
Gift” and credit their friends’ cards via Facebook, too. That
feature is an idea born out of their community site,
My Starbucks
Idea. The Seattle-based caffeine king wants to know what you
want from Starbucks, and the company is listening. The site enables
consumers to share their ideas and critique others’ ideas as well.
Discussions are encouraged, and the community votes to see which
ideas become reality. The “Give a Gift” idea was suggested back in
2008, and drew more than 42,000 votes. It may have taken some time
for the idea to become a reality, but it shows that Starbucks is
listening to its customers. As one of the most universally
recognized brands, it’s not surprising that Coca-Cola is the second
most engaged brand according to
Famecount. Just like Starbucks, Coke is active on
Twitter, engaging in conversation with its 142,000 followers. Given
that it has a worldwide following, it’s appropriate that many of
the tweets are written in different languages. In addition to its
overarching brand, each drink it produces also has its own Twitter
page. On
Facebook, it’s somewhat astounding that 15 million
people “Like” the soft drink empire, but the company has done a
good job of keeping things interesting and interactive. The Page is
a hub of all sorts of activity, including posting fan photos,
videos and social good initiatives like
Live Positively, where fans voted for America’s
favorite park to receive a $100,000 grant. On
Coca-Cola’s
YouTube channel, the soda company launched “Unlock
The Secret,” a viral video campaign featuring Coke’s inventor, Doc
Pemberton. By clicking on bottle links in the videos, viewers are
taken to the
@docpemberton Twitter page, Coke’s
Ahh Giver app on Facebook (which allows users to
send a message to a friend delivered in video format by the Coke
polar bear), and
Coke’s Smilezier, a novel feature that allows users
to record their laughter and listen to other people’s as well. All
of these efforts tie together Coca-Cola’s brand of happiness, and
it’s created an interesting and original experience while engaging
with consumers online.

Twitter’s a great tool to connect with others, but
what else can it do? Is it worthy of the hype, and will it be
around long-term?

There is actually a lot you can
do with Twitter, and more uses are being discovered every day.
Every niche uses Twitter differently (lawyers may use it to get
advice on cases, while programmers might find work through
Twitter). How many of these ways do you use?
-
Customer Service: One of the best known
examples of how businesses are using Twitter is for customer
service. We’ve all heard about @ComcastCares helping cable customers (even
those that don’t use Comcast), but there are other examples.
Dell has many employees (like @LionelatDell) who are tweeting about various
things, but who are always happy to help a
customer. @GEICO is another example.
-
How to Do It: Keep a search
stream on keywords like your company’s name. If you see
someone complaining or talking about a problem, reach out
and see how you can help. Also make sure to publicize the
fact that your company offers Twitter customer service
support on your site.
-
Find Out What People Are Saying About Your
Brand: Curious what people think of you? Check
Twitter. You’ll get the good, the bad and the ugly, but you can
handle it. Use this as an opportunity to respond publicly to
any false claims, and make good on fixing the true ones.
-
How to Do It: Again, search
your company. Assign someone in your company to keep an eye
on this and quickly respond to any negative feedback. Also
respond to positive feedback. Consider offering a gift or
special discount to your brand evangelists on Twitter.
-
Introduce New People to Your Product: People
can’t buy your product if they don’t know about it. Twitter is
a great place to talk about what you sell, but beware: talking
too much about your product will turn people off.
-
How to Do It: Inject mention
of your product where appropriate. For example, if someone
is bemoaning their broken printer and you sell printers,
tweet them a teaser that will get them interested in what
you offer. DON’T constantly tweet out product promotion.
It’s tacky.
-
Share Company News and Promotions: Twitter is
today’s newsroom. Many people will never go to your site to
click on your News page, so it’s a great tool to share what’s
going on at your company. It’s also easy for people to click a
link to visit a page on your site when you promote a sale.
-
How to Do It: Share links to
press releases and blog posts with enticing titles to get
people to click. If you’re having a sale, offer the benefit
(“Get 10 books for the price of 3 and STILL put money back
in your pocket”). Also consider offering a special discount
only found on Twitter.
-
Keep Up with Live Events: One of Twitter’s
earliest uses was at a conference. If you’re attending a
conference or trade show, use Twitter and the hashtag
designated for the event to keep up with sessions you don’t
attend, and the latest Tweetup with your newest friends.
-
How to Do It: For every tweet
you put out that relates to the event, use the designated
hashtag so people can find it. You can also find relevant
people to follow by checking the hashtag stream to see
who’s there.
-
Make New Friends: The most fun use of Twitter
is just making new friends. Whether you’re on for business or
personal use, you can make some long-lasting friendships
through tweets.
-
How to Do It: Search for your
interests and see who else is talking about them. Join in
the conversation where appropriate. Add people you enjoy
following to your favorites list so you can see what
they’re saying any time.
-
Find Job/Find Employees: It’s amazing how many
people have found work through Twitter. If you’re looking for a
job, follow Twitter profiles like FSwJobs
or @work_freelance, which list jobs and descriptions
daily.
-
How to Do It: If you need to
hire, link on Twitter to a job description page. Ask people
to retweet your job opening. If you’re looking for a job,
search for keywords and job titles you want.
-
Conduct Research: The easiest way to get
answers to questions is to ask them on Twitter. Want to know
how people use Twitter? How many own iPhones? Own houses? Tweet
it out.
-
How to Do It: Just ask a
question. Make it one people want to answer, then document
your responses.
-
Connect with Media Types: If you write press
releases or look for media coverage in magazines, Twitter can
be a great way to connect with journalists and editors.
-
How to Do It: Search to see
if a particular editor is on Twitter. Follow him, and pay
attention to his tweets. DON’T just jump in and ask him to
write about you. When it makes sense, tell him you have a
story you’d like to share and ask if he’s interested, how
can you best contact him. He’ll either tell you he’s not
interested or give you his email.
There are even more ways to use Twitter to grow your business.
How are you using it?

If you haven’t heard of Tumblr, you will. The pace that it’s
currently growing is similar to (if not greater than) the type of
growth that Twitter experienced 2 years ago. The
blog/microblog/community hybrid social media site is well on its
way to hitting the mainstream soon.

While its users and fans are
often rabid, there is one entity that doesn’t give it much respect:
Google. Search engines in general are frowning on ranking
Tumblelogs well in their results pages because of Tumblr’s greatest
strength: ease of content aggregation.
Simplicity, Thy Name is
Tumblr
Anyone who has a Tumblr page can create 2 things extremely
quickly: content and backlinks. One simply has to go through other
Tumblr pages that the millions of users have created and click the
“Reblog” button. They can add their own content to it in the form
of notes, add tags, even adjust the URL. They also get a backlink
from the source because whenever something is reblogged, a note
with a link goes up at the source. Assuming that most bypass the
notes and tags, it is possible to place content on your Tumblelog
and a backlink in approximately 4 seconds. To put it into
perspective, one of our clients currently runs 15 successful and
content-rich Tumblelogs and spends less than 30 minutes a day
keeping them maintained. This simplicity is one of Tumblr’s
greatest strengths, if not THE greatest, but…
… Google Doesn’t Like It

Anyone who optimizes sites
for Google knows there are 2 things that hold the most value for
rankings: content and backlinks. Tumblelogs are set on subdomains
of tumblr.com or on their own domains hosted by Tumblr. For most
platforms, this is extremely useful in SEO as the search engines
consider subdomains as their own unique website in many occasions.
Blogger, a site that is owned by Google, has literally millions of
subdomains that act as stand-alone websites where people can create
theirblogname.blogspot.com and have that site rank well for their
keywords. Tumblr does not have that luxury. Somewhere along the
lines, Google and the other search engines realized that it would
be not only possible but encouraged by Tumblr and other people
duplicate content and generate backlinks. As a result, it takes a
lot more effort to get the search engines’ attention for stronger
rankings. Another factor that hurts Tumblr on the search engine is
the lack of unique title tags for many of the pages. Those created
as “Text” get the title of the story as the title tag, but pictures
and videos share the same title tag as the homepage of their
Tumblelog. We are currently testing to see if this lack of respect
from the search engines applies to outbound links. If the links are
tainted in some way, Tumblr’s usefulness in optimizing other sites
is also reduced compared to other platforms. We will see, as we
have several test Tumblelogs running. When we know for sure, we’ll
post the results here.
Does It Matter?
If you’re getting into Tumblr for SEO purposes to either
achieve rankings directly or to use Tumblr as a linking tool, there
are other similar free blogging and microblogging platforms that
are superior. If you’re getting into Tumblr because you want to
share and find content, then Tumblr is ideal. The community aspect
combined with the ease of use and maintenance make Tumblr a prime
site through which to have fun, share, and network. Does Tumblr
matter? It all depends on how you want to use it.

Is facebook the future of business? In the early days (just a few
short years ago), companies diligently created web pages and worked
hard to drive customers to look at their ‘online brochure’. Then
came the day of the opt-in. Many businesses asked the question –
What if we could give something of value to someone visiting our
site and they would leave their details, meaning we could follow up
with them and try to sell our service. To this day, there are many
companies, particularly offline that still haven’t mastered this
strategy! That then went a step further and the squeeze page was
created. A one page website, with lots of text and images telling
you all the great reasons you should leave your name and email
address to get your free gift, which eventually has become simply
an opt-in form with a big call to action. All the text and images
are saved for the sales page these days. In the middle of all of
this blogs arrived, allowing people to talk about their journey,
their life, their interests and anything else they could think off!
All of a sudden it wasn’t just celebrities or politicians that had
voices anymore, John round the corner had his own personal soapbox!
All of these strategies however, were missing one vital component
and that was ‘connection’! In order to drive traffic to your
website, blog, squeeze page, you have to spend either a lot of time
or money or both on all the varying traffic generation strategies
and traditional marketing methods. This will get people to view
what you have on offer, but it is only at this stage can you begin
to build a relationship. In 2004, some college students created
something to connect with their friends. Facebook fast became a
great site for connecting with old friends and colleagues and
suddenly being able to chat openly and freely with like-minded
people from all over the globe. It completely squashed sites such
as Friends Reunited (remember that!). Sometime over the last couple
of years, businesses on and offline have started to realize the
power of creating relationships before selling anything and sure
enough facebook is becoming an amazing tool for business. I’m going
to take it a stage further and state that I believe that Facebook
will become the tool for business. People buy from people, that’s a
saying we’re all very familiar with and that’s the power of
Facebook. You can begin to create a relationship with your customer
instantly. The moment they click to become a friend or a fan, you
can easily and quickly speak to just them, personally and with
great effect. Not only that, but the fact they’re having a
conversation with you, then shows up in front of all their friends,
who also want in on the action, then all those conversations show
in front of all their respective friends and so it goes on. Very
quickly your reputation, services, products are being seen by
thousands of people, without you having spent a penny on keyword
campaigns, advertising, direct mail etc. The beauty of a facebook
fan page is that you can now have your squeeze page as your welcome
tab. Meaning you can offer a valuable free resource for all those
visiting your page and start creating a relationship immediately.
The challenge I have discovered is that due to the air of mystery
that still surrounds fan pages, companies are charging the earth to
build your fan page for you and even more to create your fan page
squeeze page – in some cases up to dollarsignr1000!!! This is
something you can do yourself in under 10 minutes for FREE. It’s
not rocket science and I will show you exactly how to do it in my
FREE Ebook and Video series, ‘Create Your Own Fan Page in Under 10
Minutes for FREE!’
