If you're looking for reasons not to jump on the
Verizon iPhone bandwagon, here's a pretty
compelling, albeit unconfirmed, one: the Xperia Play may be headed to Big Red as well. In
comparing Sony Ericsson's thumb-friendly Android handset to the iPhone 4,
Wirefly has listed VZW as the carrier for the Play. This is the
first we've really heard of a US provider for the phone, though
we'd hardly be surprised if Sony Ericsson opts to spam it out to
all four major networks. It did as much in the UK, where every single operator will try to sell you one
in April, and we don't see why that strategy should change on US
soil. The Xperia Play will be announced in full this Sunday,
February 13th, when we might just learn more about its global
availability... if we're really polite and wear our PlayStation
T-shirts, presumably.

What's your preference for getting up close to the
action? 18x wide 28-504mm or 12.5x super-wide 24-300mm optical
zoom? If it's the former then Olympus just announced its $249.99
(ships in March) SZ-10 ultra-zoomer pictured above, with 14
megapixel 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor, 3-inch LCD, TruPic III+ image
processing, and Eye-Fi Card support. Otherwise, Oly's new £159.99
3D VR-330 for Europe dials back the zoom to 12.5x and and forgoes
the newer image processing of the SZ-10 while boasting the same 14
megapixel sensor. Both cameras pack dual-image stabilization, 720p
video capture, HDMI-out (with CEC support so that it works with
your TV's existing remote control), and a dynamic "3D mode" that
instructs you to pan and shoot a second image that will be combined
into a .MPO file suitable for playback on a 3D display. The VR-330
is also available without the 3D mode as the $199.99 VR-320 which
ships Stateside in February. Bringing up the rear is an entry-level

In
introducing his messaging platform last November
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said one of the primary motivations
behind product strategy was that teenagers have given up on email,
"High school kids don?t use email, they use SMS a lot. People
want lighter weight things like SMS and IM to message each
other." A comScore study on 2010 digital trends reinforces
Zuckerberg's claim. It's inevitable: As innovative social
messaging platforms like Facebook and Twitter continue to dominate
our online time, email begins its steady decline. Total web email
usage was down 8% in the past year (YOY), with a whopping 59%
decline in use among people between the ages of 12-17. Cue Matt

Well, Groupon certainly isn't afraid of rustling a few
feathers. The red-hot group buying site has just posted its
celeb-laden Super Bowl ads, and they've taken to poking fun at
global crises like dwindling whale populations and deforestation.
They're a little weird, and likely to spark waves of debate and
plenty of extra publicity. Groupon rival LivingSocial will be
running a Super Bowl ad as well, that reportedly tells the story of
a LivingSocial addict ? Groupon poked fun at this with its own
rejected" ad. Guess whose commercials people
will be talking about at the water cooler tomorrow? And while some
people won't like the joke, Groupon isn't being mean-spirited
about it: its Save The Money site has offers for a variety of
charity organizations. For example, making a $15 donation to
GreenPeace will score you $15 in Groupon Credit (it's essentially a
free donation on your part).
Looks like Capital Markets Day is shaping up to be
quite the barnburner for Nokia. In the wake of news that Microsoft
and Nokia may have some sort of tie-up in the works, Germany weekly
Wirtschaftswoche is reporting that newly appointed CEO Stephen Elop
will be bidding adieu to a number of high-ranking officials. Citing
"company sources," the paper stated that Mary T. McDowell, a bigwig in the mobile phones
unit, as well as Niklas Savander, the manager of the markets unit,
could be on the outs. Moreover, Kai Oistamo (Chief Development
Officer) and Tero Ojanpera, the manager responsible for services
and mobile solutions, may also be enjoying their final weekends as
Nokia employees. It's all part of a monumental strategy shift, and
if it all pans out, it'll be Elop's first major move since taking
over as CEO last September. Of course, Anssi Vanjoki more or
less left on his own accord, and the company has
essentially forged ahead with little to no change since. We're told
that Nokia has h...
Watch very closely as the camera pans around this landscape and try
to locate the horde of soldiers—twenty? thirty?—hiding in
plain sight. Apparently, some people in the military need no
stinking magic cloaking technology to become invisible.
