How long with my battery last when I’m on the move?” This is
the one question that a laptop user never stops worrying about.
You probably already have some sort of battery monitor
installed natively on your system that tells you how much time
and what percentage of battery juice remains. But this is often
not enough.
BatteryBar from OsirisDevelopment.com is a popular
battery-monitoring tool for Windows. It installs as a ‘toolbar’
that can either remain docked next to the system tray or
floating on top of all open windows. BatteryBar is basically a
simple
dell laptop batteries metre—at a
glance. It displays either the charge percentage or the time
remaining to charge or discharge. If you hover over BatteryBar,
it displays further details, such as the battery’s charge
capacity, charge rate, full run time, AC status and the wear
status of the battery. However, its USP is that it saves
battery status history and over time is able to ‘learn’ how to
provide increasingly accurate estimates. BatteryBar has both
free and pro versions. For $5 (approx Rs 250), the commercial
edition adds battery profile graphs, low battery warnings and
more.
Want something a little more detailed? Try BattStat from
Users.rcn.com/tmtalpey/BattStat/. Another free Windows
programme, it not the most polished of applications, but it was
coded by a user who felt a sore need for a detailed
battery-monitoring application and decided to write one
himself. It resides in the system tray and uses Windows’
built-in battery support to display power usage, battery status
and battery events; moreover, it can also display information
such as CPU speed and usage, CPU and hard drive temperatures
and so on. There is also a custom hotkey to turn off the screen
in case you need to conserve battery.
Need a strong visual reminder when your
laptop battery starts to run down?
Power Meter Plus
(Mattcollinge.wordpress.com/software/power-meter-plus/) is a
tiny application (about 100 kb) that remains unobtrusive as
long as your battery is charged. As charge levels start to
fall, it appears in the form of a percentage meter, and gets
progressively prominent as battery get lower. It can also
usually position itself on a part of the screen that is not
being used.
Mac OSX users ought to try out Coconut Battery from
Coconut-flavour.com. It can be installed as a Dashboard widget,
and shows detailed battery health and system information,
including time remaining, charge cycles, maximum capacity,
present battery capacity, CPU speed and temperature, memory
usage and so on. It is also supposed to be able to warn you if
you have the wrong charger connected to your MacBook. There is
also an older version of the software available for users of
earlier Mac OS versions and hardware.
SlimBatteryMonitor from Orange-carb.org/SBM is another nice Mac
application. True to its name, its display icon on the menu bar
is much slimmer than the native Mac battery metre. It works
with both laptop and UPS batteries, and comes with various view
options, including the ability to hide itself (for example,
when fully charged). It also allows you to set customised low
battery warning levels—something that is missing from the
native battery preferences.
Of course, it goes without saying that this is a very
superficial list. There are different types of battery metres
out there—simple graphs that show how much time remains on the
brand of laptop battery or powerhorses that
provide an indepth profile of the system or just something that
makes a very loud noise when your battery is about to run down.

A time when we travel or travel should be in the bag ready to

mobile phone battery, for a rainy day in 2007, the
iPhone turned out to change the mobile phone industry phenomena,
such as slim body , for example, the shape of touch, as well as
Today we explore the built-in battery-in-one form factor. Original
rely on a few pieces of battery will be able to turnaround a few
days of life, has now quietly bid farewell to us. So, this can not
replace the
ASUS F80 Series Battery"whether to fly, let's
find out together.
Technology:
From a personality synonymous with a good way to save space
When the iPhone finally showed in the eyes of the world, it can not
change the battery design to challenge the traditions and customs
of all, but ultimately strong iPhone development, we have gradually
begun to accept in such a way, opinion makers, the battery into the
body which does have many benefits, not replace the battery program
will save the body volume without rendering the battery out
user-friendly plug, do not need to leave space between the battery
and back cover, these spaces will be direct compression to allow
users to have slimmer size mobile phone.
Process requirements, and also there are other ways to extend the
life
As to prolong life, used a few pieces of batteries in the past
round now, we have a new solution, mobile power supply it is worth
considering. A mainstream brand of mobile power for 4000-8000 mA of
power, enough to charge two to five times, this process is not shut
down, is not affected, but also to facilitate than to change the
battery, mobile power supply, the price is not more expensive than
the original mobile phone batteries.
Products:
IPhone4S on, the battery is still the subject has a nominal 200
hours standby time, but users complain iPhone4S the battery does
not "force", whether it is because of the powerful hardware
configuration, or iOS system in power links the number of problem,
"one charge" should become iPhone4S habits of users. various
iPhone4S has been very well, 3.5-inch display has proved to be one
of the most suitable for the screen size of the one-hand operation,
dual-core A5 chip in the actual use of them can feel the upgrade
for the iPhone 4.
Shortcomings:
Unable to extend the SD card
These built-in battery-in-one mobile phone is basically unable to
support the expansion of storage, precisely because of the built-in
SAMSUNG VP-D375W Charger battery unibody design
and strive to simple and slim, they are generally in the built-in
16GB or 32GB native storage space, it not become a member of the SD
card expansion slot. In this way you want to increase mobile phone
capacity, can further replace the phone comes with a large
space.
Increase in maintenance costs
United States University of South Carolina to an experimental
figure shows the relationship between the
cell phone battery discharge curve with the number
of charge cycles. Because some of the built-in cell phone can not
replace the battery, so we can frequently charge to maintain an
adequate electricity, but continue to frequent recharging a
battery, its energy efficiency will result in some reduction.
Built-in battery damage, the official Apple iPhone, for example to
replace the repair time takes about 600 yuan or so, and you buy an
original battery costs, but also two to three hundred dollars.
Micro-SIM card with more and more mobile phone, built-in storage
space directly rather than design memory card slot, as much as
possible to save space in the battery part, which is obviously
present and even future for a long period of time which the entire
industry design trends. Make the phone slimmer, allowing users to
carry and easier to use, we are fully able to understand the
vendor's original intention. See the quality and experience of the
iPhone family of completely let us rest assured that being the
case, why should they tangle on the battery can not change it?

WARREN, Mich. — Two employees were injured Wednesday in a lithium
battery explosion that forced the evacuation of about 80 others at
a General Motors Co. facility north of Detroit, authorities
said.
The explosion occurred during extreme testing of an experimental
ibm thinkpad t40 2374-xxx battery in a
test chamber at the Alternative Energy Center laboratory at the GM
Tech Center in Warren, the automaker said in a statement.
It also caused a small fire that was quickly extinguished.
"Chemical gases from the battery cells were released and ignited in
the enclosed chamber," GM said. "The battery itself was
intact."
The Tech Center, a sprawling 1950s-era campus, is home to the
hp compaq business notebook 6910p
battery laboratory for the Chevrolet Volt
electric car. The battery being tested had no connection with the
Chevrolet Volt or any other GM production vehicle, according to the
automaker.
Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Michelle Krebs said Wednesday's
explosion could resurrect debate surrounding an investigation into
the Chevy Volt and fires.
Sales of the electric car slowed last year after fires broke out in
three of the cars' batteries several days after safety
crash-testing. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
launched an investigation, but closed it after determining that the
car was no more risky than vehicles with conventional gasoline
engines.
"And while this incident deserves some scrutiny — especially since
workers were hurt — the fact is that this is the reason why new car
technology undergoes rigorous testing, to try to ensure that
episodes like this don't happen on the road," Krebs said.
On Wednesday, dispatchers received calls about the explosion at
8:46 a.m. and firefighters arrived five minutes later, Warren Fire
Chief Dave Frederick said.
"They reported light smoke ... and some small amount of fire,"
Frederick said. "It was confined to the room of the explosion."
One worker was taken to an area hospital, while the second was
treated at the scene. The extent of their injuries was not
immediately known. Four other employees also were evaluated by
medical personnel at the scene, GM said.
A hazardous materials team was called in to monitor the air quality
at the facility, Frederick added.

Have you ever wondered how you should dispose of used
camera
batteries when there are no recycling bins nearby?

Some keep them in a
box at home for years, some send them to environmental protection
organizations and some simply dispose of them with other
household waste.
Trying to offer a further alternative, Beijing doctor Wang
Zixin decided to build a battery-recycling plant - the first in
China.
That was back in the 1980s, when he was at Nanyuan Hospital, in the
capital's Fengtai district.
Wang had read that a small
Canon LP-E6 battery could contaminate 60
liters of water. Appalled, he decided he could better use his time
trying to prevent heavy metals from contaminating the earth than
treating patients with respiratory and digestive troubles.
"If we had a plant in the city recycling batteries, it could make a
great difference," said Wang.
As a doctor who knew little about recycling
Canon EOS-300D batteries, Wang
could offer little more to his new cause than passion and resolve.
But in 1991, he quit his job and began conducting research into how
batteries are treated in China and abroad.
He borrowed piles of books and documents, and consulted experts
about the possibility of building a recycling plant and preventing
leakage of poisonous gases and wastewater.
The intensive research and Wang's frequent visits abroad made him
even more concerned about what happened to used batteries in
China.
Wang said China uses about 8 billion batteries a year, or about
200,000 tons of them. But only 2,000 tons of zinc-manganese
batteries are recycled each year.
"More than 4 tons of zinc are wasted every year because used
Canon NB-4L batteries are not
properly dealt with," said Wang. "That's simply a waste of
resources."
As an example of what a country can do, Wang cited Switzerland. He
said the Swiss use two battery-recycling plants to extract 780 tons
of manganese and iron, 400 tons of the aluminum-zinc alloy,
kirsite, and 3 tons of mercury every year from 2,000 tons of
batteries.
In Europe, several countries can share one battery-recycling plant
to reduce costs.
In 2000, inspired by seeing successful examples abroad, and in
cooperation with the University of Science and Technology Beijing,
Wang invested in the first plant in China to extract heavy metals
from used batteries at Baoding city, Hebei province.
"If used
Canon EOS 5D battery are collected and
recycled, we can not only save a tremendous amount of resources but
also avoid environmental pollution," Wang said.
But Wang's first attempt at turning waste into wealth failed,
partly because the leakage of wastewater and poisonous gases at the
plant did not meet the national standard in 2003.
Wang lost 80 percent of his savings - about 1 million yuan
($158,600) - with the closure of the plant, but his compassion and
determination remained strong.
His wife, however, did not feel the same way.
"I know it was hard for her at the beginning. All the savings were
gone and the whole family had to live on her income, together with
my parents' small retirement pension," said Wang. "Life turned out
to be so tough because I took a path that has been little
traveled."
Wang said his wife has gradually come to accept the situation, but
she still complains from time to time.
"The failure of the first plant was quite a blow, with little
support," said Wang. "But it was also a precious lesson for me, as
a novice in the field of environmental protection."
With little money left to re- invest in used-battery treatment,
Wang started raising funds from friends. And one thing has made him
stick even more firmly to his aims.
A friend asked him during a fundraising event: "What if you abandon
the idea years later, with nothing left to pay us back?"
"The lack of trust was such an affront to my character," said Wang.
"I shook hands with him and gave an oath. I said I'll make it
happen, I will make it happen."
Ten years later, Wang is still pursuing his dream, "in a stubborn
way", says his wife, but his second
Sony NP-FC11 battery-recycling
plant is due to start operating in July, in the Daxing district of
south Beijing.
"With the vacuum heat treatment we have been working on in the past
few years, no poisonous gas would escape, and the heavy metal, like
mercury, would be extracted when the temperature reaches 357 C,"
Wang said.
"This will certainly meet the national standard."
But even if all goes well, the new plant will do little for Wang's
finances, beyond accumulating more debt.
"Even if we get the used batteries for free, we can only make a
profit of 1 yuan (16 cents) from 200 batteries, barely enough to
cover workers' salaries and warehouse charges," said Wang.
That's why there are no battery-recycling plants in China, he said.
No profit can be made.
"You are bound to burn your bucks if you run a
Sony NP-F970 Battery -recycling plant
without any funding or government support," said Wang. "I just hope
my pioneering venture will at least open the way for the world's
biggest battery consumer to follow."
Totally occupied in his campaign to recycle used batteries, Wang
has barely had time to communicate with his 19-year-old son, who is
due to take a college entrance examination around the same time
that the new plant opens.
"I don't expect him to understand me, far less share my devotion,
since it's been such a rough time for him going through all the
hardship," said Wang. "He's got his own life."
"However, he will understand and be proud of me one day."

Despite reports about Wi-Fi connectivity issues
and overheating, new iPad owners appear to be more satisfied with
the updated Apple tablet than ever, thanks in large part to the
new Retina display.
According to a new report from ChangeWave Research, 82 percent of
new iPad buyers are "very satisfied" with the updated tablet, while
16 percent are "somewhat satisfied." Only 2 percent were "somewhat
unsatisfied," while no one was "very unsatisfied."
That's a jump from last month, when ChangeWave asked first-
and second-generation iPad owners about their satisfaction levels.
About 74 percent were "very" satisfied, while 23 percent were
"somewhat" satisfied.
What features are new iPad owners most enjoying? An overwhelming 75
percent like the Retina display, followed by 22 percent who enjoy
the long battery (
Sony VAIO VGN-NW240F battery)life, and 21 percent
who are pleased by the 4G LTE capability. Rounding out the top five
most-liked features were the processor speed (20 percent) and
updated iSight camera (18 percent).
There were a few gripes, however, and most had to do with money.
About 26 percent were not excited by the price of the new iPad,
while 23 percent did not like the cost of the wireless/data plan.
About 6 to 8 percent of respondents, meanwhile, took issue with the
new iPad's size/weight, amount of storage, integration with other
devices, overheating issues, and battery
(Dell inspiron 13r
battery)life.
ChangeWave singled out the overheating issue, but 89 percent of
those surveyed said they hadn't experienced an issue. Earlier this
month, thermal images from Dutch site Tweakers.net showed that
Apple's third-gen iPad was 10 degrees hotter than the iPad 2.
Apple, however, said the updated device operates "well within our
thermal specifications."
ChangeWave compared that to the 2010 "antennagate" issue with the
iPhone 4. In talking to users in July 2010, 21 percent reported
that it was a "very big" or "somewhat" of a problem, while 64
percent said it was not an issue. The problem eventually forced
Apple to offer users a free bumper; a lawsuit over the issue was
settled recently, but users will only walk away with $15 each.

Shares of electric vehicle
Acer Aspire 4745g Battery supplier A123
Systems continued falling to new lows this morning as one New
York law firm began seeking investors who might want to sue
management and the board over alleged violations of
securities law.
Monday the Waltham, Mass.-based firm with plants in Livonia
and Romulus, announced it would replace faulty batteries
shipped to five customers, including Fisker Automotive.
CEO David Vieau said company officials discovered the problem
in certain prismatic cells late last week at its Livonia
facility. The defect appeared to be caused by one of four
automated welding machines, he said. The company will start
shipping
replacement battery packs to five customers
later this week, he said. It estimated the replacement effort
will cost about $55 million that it will take as a charge to
its earnings over the next several quarters.
By 11:40 a.m. A123 shares had fallen 14% to $1.21, up
slightly from a morning low of $1.17. Since Friday, the stock
has lost 29% of its value.
Earlier this morning the New York law firm of Bronstein,
Gewirtz & Grossman, which bills itself as a “corporate
litigation boutique,” issued a press release saying it was
“investigating potential claims” of shareholders concerning
whether the company and certain of its officers and directors
have violated federal securities laws.
A123 spokesman Dan Borgasano declined to comment on the law
firm’s statement.
Earlier this month, Consumer Reports disclosed that a
$108,000 Fisker Karma flashed an error message and locked in
gear with just 180 miles on the odometer, while being driven
at the magazine's Connecticut testing center. The cause of
that shutdown was associated with A123’s defective batteries,
said Vieau, who declined to identify other customers who
received defective
MOTOROLA Cell Phone battery packs.

LAKE ELSINORE — A pitcher and catcher working on the same page
is mandatory in high school softball. Standouts at the two
positions are a plus.
Having senior pitcher Jasmine Smithson-Willett and junior
catcher Austen Urness as your
laptop battery? No, not "priceless." But
definitely a game-changer, and in Lakeside High's case, a
program-changer.
The two cornerstones of the Lancers softball team are entering
their final year together, and that means a final chance at
high school success — perhaps the last benchmark to elude them
in their years on the northwest side of the lake.
Both are accomplished travel-ball players. Both have Division I
scholarships in hand. And both are among the best in the Valley
at their respective positions.
"I think they challenge each other," Lakeside coach Todd Naylor
said. "They challenge each other at practice. When we pitch
live, the teams get real quiet and it becomes a battle."
Now, they want respect for their team.
Despite the program's success and talent on the roster, the
Lancers have yet to get past the second round of the CIF
Southern Section postseason, having lost in that round each of
the last three years. That stretch included a heartbreaking 6-4
loss to Hesperia two years ago that abruptly ended an
undefeated league season and 23-3 campaign. Last year, the
Lancers were bumped out of the second round by West Covina
South Hills.
"I kind of like losing last year, because it gave everybody
almost a slap in the face," Smithson-Willett said after
Monday's practice. "It was like, 'If we don't play like we know
we can, we're going to get beat.'"
So here's their chance in 2012. For the Lancers and their
dynamic duo, it's been quite a ride to this point.
Smithson-Willett established herself as an ace as soon as she
stepped into the Lakeside circle as a freshman, and the program
transformed from second-division status to Sunbelt League
frontrunner. In travel ball, she helped the Upland-based SoCal
Athletics 18-and-under Gold team — a club that also includes
Great Oak standouts Danica and Mo Mercado — win back-to-back
national championships.
In three seasons of high school softball, she's won 53 games,
allowed just 89 earned runs in 443 innings and has struck out a
whopping 567 batters.
Willett can attribute much of her progress to her catcher.
Naylor has allowed Urness to call Willett's pitches since
almost the beginning — "I called the first game, gave her the
second and the rest is history," he said — and the development
of her change-up to a plus-screwball and strong fastball has
made her a force.
"It makes things 10 times easier. It makes pitching easier,"
Willett said of working with Urness. "(With) her calling the
game, it makes me more confident because I know that if she
calls a change-up, I know that it's going to be the right pitch
because that's how she feels.
"It's kind of like that telepathic feeling."
Telepathy didn't lead Urness to Lakeside, but some could have
thought so. She showed up in Naylor's program as a freshman
already with a verbal commitment to Nebraska in her back
pocket. That raised some eyebrows, especially with former Vista
Murrieta star Taylor Edwards in Lincoln, Neb., just two years
ahead of her.
But Urness has more than proved her worth, and last year, she
began exhibiting Edwards-like numbers, hitting .443 with nine
home runs and 32 RBIs.
Behind the plate, there has been a learning curve, too. Urness
said she's worked hard this season on throw-downs to second
base, as well as manipulating her calls for
Smithson-Willett.
"Definitely from my side, it's (about) calling a smarter game,"
she said. "Last year, we kind of just threw to
(Smithson-Willett's) strength, and now we need to start
throwing to hitters' weaknesses."
That means knowing the hitters, finding the soft spot in their
zone and using her pitcher's four-pitch arsenal to her
advantage.
"They're really fun to watch," Naylor said.
The two share a bond, and it's one developed through the high
school game. Though they attended middle school together, they
barely knew one another prior to Lakeside.
"Out on the field, we have handshakes and we definitely have
the same lifestyle," Urness said. "We're both committed, we're
both going to college, and we're on a track, basically, so we
definitely share knowledge with each other."
They compete, too, in practices in live pitching, and as
quality hitters manning the Nos. 3 and 4 spots in the Lakeside
lineups. Together, with senior Megan Bartee (.455, 16 RBIs last
year), they form the heart of a formidable batting order.
That production will be needed as they enter an improved
Sunbelt League. Lakeside shared the league crown with Heritage
last year, and the Lancers suffered league losses to both the
Patriots and Paloma Valley. All three expect to challenge for
the league crown.
And then, when those darned playoffs come around, the Lancers
expect to be ready.
"We as a team have worked so much harder this year and so much
longer," Urness said. "We started in August, and we have been
working since August and have been working hard on the field.
We've been working hard on the little things that we need to do
to improve and get past the second round of CIF."

Major battery-life problems are affecting the new iPad, user
testimonies suggest, as Apple’s latest tablet becomes embroiled in
a perfect storm of teething problems.
Earlier this week, it emerged that some new iPad owners are
experiencing overheating problems. Things took a turn for the worse
for Apple days later when hundreds of users expressed concern that
their new wonder device struggles to connect to wireless
networks.

Today, what appears to be another glitch with the device still
being informally dubbed the iPad 3 has surfaced. This time, users
have taken to Apple forums en masse to complain that their tablet
suffers from cripplingly short
Canon Nb-8l Battery life and takes aeons to
charge.
According to device diagnostic doyennes DisplayMate, the blame
rests squarely on the HD display and the battery-hungry LED
backlight it uses. The company claims that this tears through power
at three times the rate of the iPad 2.
Raymond Soneira of DisplayMate told CNET: “The power consumption of
the LEDs is 2.5 times that of iPad 2, and the battery is 1.7 times
larger - if you run your new iPad at full brightness, the
Studio 1537 Battery run time is less because you
only put in 70 per cent more battery but you're using 150 per cent
more power.”
Apple has yet to acknowledge reports of battery longevity problems.
But as soon as it does, we’ll let you know.
In the meantime if you’re one of those affected by sub-par
Fujifilm Np-40 Battery life, tell us about it in
the comments section below.

Supercapacitors formed by the mighty power of DVD-RW drives -
and a bit of graphite oxide and hard work...
What does graphite oxide, a DVD, and a burner with LightScribe
functionality have in common? They're all part of a research
project which resulted in the production of reliable ultrahigh
energy density supercapactiors, a technology that's been touted
as a possible solution to lacklustre energy storage in modern
machines.
Producing these capacitors involves spreading a layer of graphite
oxide onto an ordinary DVD, then inserting it into a LightScribe
capable burner. The graphite is then reduced to a mechanically
robust graphene lattice with high conductivity and surface area
(an important factor for capacitance). Two of these sheets
sandwiched together with a dielectric separating them act as a
complete flexible capacitor, measuring less than 100 microns
thick. The Science paper by Maher F. El-Kady, Veronica Strong,
Sergey Dubin, and Richard B. Kaner describes the process in
detail.
If there's one thing that's bottlenecking the rate of which
performance increases on portable devices, it's the
Canon fv40 Battery technology struggling to
keep up. Power efficient System on Chip (SoC) designs, larger
batteries, improved display technologies such as OLED, and tight
coupling of circuitry such as 4G radios all help to curb the
effects of
Canon Eos 1100d Battery use. Even with all
these efforts, the 'battery anxiety' issues of the current
generation make it difficult to become truly portable. At some
stage of the day you're going to find yourself tethered to a USB
or wall outlet.
It's not just gadgets either, cars and even houses lack cheap
reliable and high capacity battery solutions. The future of auto
is electric, but we simply cannot afford to transfer
Panasonic Lumix Dmc-fz3 Battery anxiety
concerns to cars - that's just insanity, which is why most
electric vehicles are hybrids, or just outright expensive to
cater for larger energy capacity. If solar manages to become
affordable enough for the average home owner, where will we store
excess power?
Research into the area of
Canon Eos-20d Battery tech is vital for
current tech to improve into the future. Eventually stories of
battery breakthroughs will come through with a solid marketable
product, but until then, we can dream of a time where we can
disappear for a week and still have a functional phone and
laptop.

When it first debuted, Barnes & Noble's Nook Tablet went
head-to-head with Amazon's Kindle Fire with a great screen,
microSD card slot and a stylish design, but the company may have
done itself a disservice by pricing its 7-inch color eReader $50
higher. The second iteration of the Nook Tablet keeps the same
design, but halves the RAM and storage
space, and, more importantly, matches the Fire's $199 price tag.
However, is the Nook Tablet's performance still up to snuff?
Click
to EnlargeStill one of the more attractive 7-inch tablets,
the Nook Tablet's pewter-colored matte plastic chassis has a
pleasingly rounded shape that looks and feels much more like a
fancy tome than the sharp-angled Fire. At 8.1 x 5 x 0.5 inches,
the Nook Tablet is slightly bigger than the 7.5 x 4.7 x 0.5-inch
Amazon tablet, but at 14.1 ounces, it's 0.3 ounces lighter. It's
also significantly lighter than the 15.5-ounce Nook Color, which
is now $169.
The Nook Tablet sports an attractive N button below the screen,
which launches the menu with one press or returns you to home
with two clicks. We appreciate the dedicated volume up and down
buttons on the right side. The luxuriously soft, rubberized back
made it easy to grip the Nook Tablet with one hand.
Display and Audio
Like the Kindle Fire, the Nook Tablet has a 7-inch, 1024 x
600-pixel screen. According to Barnes & Noble, the
16-million-color VividView display offers better picture quality
and less glare than the competition because there's no air gap
beneath the fully laminated surface. Sure enough, action scenes
from "The Expendables" looked better on the Nook Tablet than the
Fire. Viewing angles were wider, colors were much richer and we
saw less pixelation.
Though the Nook Tablet's display was sharper and more vibrant,
the Kindle Fire's was a bit brighter, measuring at 460 lux on our
light meter, compared with 392 lux for the Nook.
The Nook Tablet's underpowered speaker is one of its biggest
weaknesses. When we tried streaming tunes from the Napster app,
the drums were tinny and audio was noticeably distorted. Worse,
the back-mounted speaker on the Nook Tablet becomes muffled when
the tablet is placed flat on a surface or mounted in a portfolio.
Software and User Interface
Click
to EnlargeThe Nook's completely unique user interface--now
at version 1.4.2--is built on top of Google's Android operating
system. Unlike the Kindle Fire's bookshelflike home screen, the
Nook has a more traditional-looking desktop on its three home
screens.
Overall, we prefer the Nook Tablet's UI to the Kindle Fire's,
because it allows easier access to recently used apps and media,
gives users the freedom to personalize the home screens with
wallpaper and shortcuts, and provides a physical button for
returning to the main menu or home more quickly.
Nook Tablet Virtual Keyboard
The Nook Tablet's virtual keyboard is reasonably accurate and
attractive, but offers no haptic feedback and no alternate input
methods such as Swype. Still, we preferred the Nook Tablet
keyboard's widely spaced keys to the tightly packed buttons on
the Kindle Fire.
Barnes & Noble Book Store
Click
to EnlargeThe Nook Book Store has more than 2.5 million
titles available for purchase and hundreds of popular magazines.
In a quick survey of the top 10 New York Times best-sellers, all
10 were available for the same price on both the Kindle and the
Nook.
Unlike the Kindle Fire, the Nook Tablet supports the popular ePub
book format, so if you want to side-load some books from other
sources, you won't have a problem. Like the Kindle Fire, the Nook
Tablet supports library lending so you can borrow eBooks from
your local public library for free. However, only the Amazon
tablet gives you a free book per month from its Lending Library
(provided you're an Amazon Prime member).
Barnes & Noble Comics Selection
Click
to EnlargeThe Nook Tablet has a number of graphic novels
and even a few single-issue copies of comics, including 109
graphic novels from Dark Horse Graphic Novels. Through a
relationship with Marvel, the Nook has a handful of superhero
titles you won't find on Amazon, including two Spiderman
collections, four X-Men collections, two Iron Man collections,
two Hulks, two Thors and one "Captain America."
Barnes & Noble Periodicals
The Nook Newsstand has hundreds of popular digital magazines and
newspapers to which you can subscribe or purchase as single
copies. You can even try any magazine for free for 14 days. All
of the magazines feature a digital table of contents menu that
lets you jump to different stories. Amazon's newsstand offers
similar features for its magazines, and pages turned more quickly
and easily.
A number of magazine titles also have interactive and multimedia
features embedded in the content. The most recent issue of
Parents magazine has a video cover with a barking dog and a
number of hyperlinks within the pages that take you to other
parts of the magazine. But there is no easy way to search for
titles that offer that "something special."
Enhanced eBooks
Click
to EnlargeBarnes & Noble offers 700 interactive
children's books, and a spokesperson told us that number should
rise to more than 1,000 by the end of the year. Some of the books
offer page-specific interactive features, such as the ability to
change the color of the main character's costume on page two of
"Awesome Man." A number of the books are labeled Read and Play,
which means they have professional audio recordings that
pronounce the text.
Enhanced Nook Books include audio and video embedded within the
story, or as additional sections, like DVD extras on a movie. For
$2 more than the normal eBook price, we downloaded the enhanced
version of J.R.R. Tolkein's "The Hobbit." The 146MB file took 4
minutes longer than a normal eBook to download over Wi-Fi. Also,
the extra content must be downloaded separately, taking up a
possible 1.51GB of
storage
space on your Nook Tablet. The sheer file size of books like this
gives us pause when considering this version of the Nook Tablet.
That said, the extras are pretty cool. For instance, in a matter
of a second or two, we were able to click a Play button in the
middle of the text and hear J.R.R. Tolkien read a passage from
the Riddles in the Dark section for 30 minutes. Other enhanced
books include video interviews with authors as well as animations
on images. Enhanced books like this aren't available on the iOS
version of the Nook app.
Read & Record Feature
All of the children's books support Barnes & Noble's new Read
& Record feature, which allows adults to record themselves
reading each page of a storybook so their children can have story
time with mom or dad's voice when they can't be there.
Social Features/Lending
The Nook Tablet's eReader has a built-in share button that lets
you recommend the book to your contacts, post your reading status
to social networks, rate the book, or like the book on Facebook
without leaving the reader app. The reader also has a fantastic
Recommend button that pops up a list of similar titles.
The Nook Friends app allows you to connect with other Nook users,
see their recommendations and even loan them books. During
testing, we added a friend and were able to easily send her a
recommended book and see a history of every title she had
commented on publicly.
Barnes & Noble makes some of its titles available as LendMe
books, which means you can loan them to one of your Nook friends
one time for up to eight days.
Parental Controls
In the settings menu, you can set a four-digit PIN and then block
access to the Web browser and all the social features. In a
completely different settings menu, you can also set a separate
password for buying items from the store. However, there's no way
to restrict library content by user or to disable email access.
Apps
The Nook's app store won't put Google Play or Amazon's App store
out of business anytime soon. A Barnes & Noble spokesperson
told us that the device currently has thousands of apps.
While there is a Twitter app, there's no official Facebook app.
The only graphically demanding game we could find on the device
was the racing game "Raging Thunder." Most of the other games
were very casual fare, including the $0.99 Combat Helicopter from
Karmic Apps, which reminded us of the original Mario Bros with a
helicopter. After about a minute of monotonous play the basic
flying app crashed.
Discovering apps is no picnic, either. You can browse through
categories, but there's no way to search just the apps inventory.
When we tried to find the game Fruit Ninja, we got a guide book
to the game, but no app.
Performance
With its 1-GHz TI OMAP4 dual-core
processor with 512MB RAM, the Nook Tablet offers half as much RAM
as the $199 version. Still, in everyday use, apps loaded fairly
quickly, videos streamed smoothly and pages flipped fast. In
comparison to the Nook Color, which includes a 800-MHz TI
processor and 512MB of RAM, the 8GB Nook Tablet consistently
opened apps a second faster, including Netflix, Twitter and the
Web browser. When compared with the Kindle Fire, the Nook opened
Pulse slower by a fraction of a second, but was faster opening
Netflix and Twitter. The browsers for the two tablets seemed to
open simultaneously.
Storage and Expansion
The Nook Tablet comes with 8GB of internal storage, as does the
Amazon Kindle Fire. However, 3GB is taken up by the operating
system and then 1GB of the remaining 4GB is reserved for Barnes
& Noble content you purchase, including books, apps,
magazines and any future downloadable content the company may
offer. That leaves 4GB of internal memory for you to fill with
personal photos, music or video files, which oddly is more space
than is allotted for personal content on the 16GB version.
Unlike the Kindle Fire, the Nook Tablet has a microSD expansion
slot that supports memory cards as large as 32GB.
Video
At present, the two main ways to play video on the Nook Tablet
are through Netflix and Hulu Plus, both of which require
membership and neither of which allows you to download files for
offline viewing. Though each has its strengths, neither has the
kind of comprehensive selection of new releases you'd find with a
pay-as-you-go service such as Amazon Video On-Demand or iTunes.
Music Playback and Options
Barnes & Noble offers a number of streaming music options,
including Grooveshark, Pandora and Rhapsody. However, if you want
offline music, you will need to bring your own MP3 files to the
device.
Web Browsing
Web pages rendered very quickly over our Wi-Fi connection. With
Flash disabled and the browser in desktop mode, we downloaded
desktop versions of the NYTimes.com, Laptopmag.com and Espn.com
in an average of 7.6 seconds, which is exactly the same as what
we got on the Kindle Fire with the page loading accelerated. And
it's only 0.2 seconds slower than the 16GB version of the Nook
Tablet.
Email
Setting up the client to check our Gmail account was a breeze.
However, we were unable to configure our office Exchange account,
because the client only offers IMAP and POP mail support. The
simple UI is attractive enough and places alerts in the status
bar when you receive new messages.
Battery Life

Barnes & Noble
claims that the Nook Tablet will last for 11.5 hours or reading
or 9 hours of video playback. With Wi-Fi on and the
battery
pumped up to 100 percent, we used the device on and off from the
morning until after midnight, so we believe Barnes & Noble's
claim. We were unable to run our standard
LAPTOP Battery Test.
Verdict
With a fantastic eReading experience, the best selection of
interactive children's books, and a newsstand loaded with
magazines, the $199 Nook Tablet is a great color eReader. We
prefer the display on this device to the Kindle Fire, but
Amazon's device has a superior app selection and better offline
media options. Those who aren't planning to play videos or use
the Read and Record feature should consider the cheaper $169 Nook
Color, because it runs the same software and has the same great
display. The 8GB Nook Tablet is a very good option, but it's not
the best choice in this price range.

Ever
since Apple introduced the iPhone 4S last October alongside iOS
5, the iPhone and iOS 5 have been met with large groans of
disappointment regarding the battery and/or charging of the
Dell latitude pp01l battery. The latest
version of iOS, however ( iOS 5.1), has appeared to have resolved
the problem for many users.
Shortly after iOS 5 and iPhone 4S was made available October of
last year, Apple released iOS 5.0.1 which was presumed to solve
many bugs users were experiencing which were causing unacceptably
short battery life on devices using iOS 5. The update, however, was
largely deemed a complete failure and seemed to solve none of the
problems and users continued to see
Acer Aspire 1410 battery life of roughly 4 to
5 hours regardless of actual usage. Apple claims
that the iPhone 4S is capable of 200 hours on standby, and
roughly 9 hours of talk time. Actual usage had been far less.
Additionally, many users complained of improper charging on
their iPhone 4S. Complaints that the
Universal External Battery would charge
to 100% and then drop in large steps thereafter flooded Apple’s
support forums for months after the launch.
iOS 5 battery charge drops even though it continues to indicate
a full charge.
With the introduction of iOS 5 last week, however, these problems
seem to have been resolved. We’ve seen dramatic improvement in
battery for hp compaq business notebook
nx9420 life. In our testing, problems with the battery
indicator persisted for a few charges after the update, but
improved each time. And now, the problem appears to be resolved.
The image below shows our results after a full day of heavy usage
(gaming, youtube, several calls, etc…)
Although it took some five months, the fixes are quite welcome.
iOS 5.1 is available now for the following devices via OTA
update or by connecting your device to iTunes.
- iPhone 3GS
- iPhone 4
- iPhone 4S
- iPad 1st Gen
- iPad 2nd Gen
- iPad 3rd Gen
- iPod Touch 3rd Gen
