Nain: A Brief History
Isfahan is located south of Tehran and is Iran's third largest
city. Nain is near Isfahan that is a pretty new rug weaving center.
The fabrication of hand-made, high quality, woolen cloth up to the
mid 20th century was what Nain was noted for.
With their skill and knowledge in the production of textiles, they
had to adapt to rug weaving after World War II. The market had
pretty much died for the fabric that Nain was known for.
There is a close similarity to the rugs produced in Isfahan and
those at the city of Nain. The difference is Nain rugs have a short
pile and distinct colors. The types of patterns that they use are
an all-over arabesque and curvilinear floral design.

Natural fiber materials used in rugs are made either by insects,
animals, and also plants. The fibers that are made by insects or
animals are recognized as protein fibers. The fibers that are
produced by plants are noted as vegetable fibers. Vegetable and
protein fibers have a mutual drawback which is that they are both
very absorbent and will take a lot longer to dry when wet cleaned.
This in turn can lead to mildew, shrinkage, and even
decomposition.
Wool
Wool fiber comes from the fleece of lambs or sheep. Wool used in
rugs and carpets is imported from places such as England,
Australia, and New Zealand. Wool is the initial material used in
rugs and carpets for centuries. It is also recognized to be the
most supreme material for use in rugs.
Wool is capable of stretching up to 40% of its original length and
the fact that it can be flexed more than 180,000 times without
showing signs of tear or breakage makes it very durable. Wool is
the most pricey of all material used in manufacturing carpets and
rugs, but it is the finest quality that money can buy.
Silk
The insects that are recognized as silk worms, make a fiber by the
larva of a variety of insects which is known as silk. Silk worms
spin their silk to make cocoons and these fibers can range in
lengths from 250 to 1500 yards or more. The silk fiber in its
natural state can retard fire, is very strong and durable and does
not produce static electricity even when the humidity is

parts that make up a hand knotted oriental rug and they are,

fabricating one of these hand woven rugs.
Flat woven, tufted and knotted make up relatively the three kinds
of oriental handmade rugs. There are five types of knots used in
rug making and the two most common of the five are the Turkish knot
and the Persian knot. These types of carpets are split up into two
different levels which consist of warp strings. The arrangement of
knot gives these types their style.
Wool is the most common material used in the production of these
rugs. When they take a thread of wool, then wrap it around the warp
strands and tie them together, they call this knot. Pile or flat
woven wool rugs are formed when they cut the knot. There is a cost
difference between the two, with pile rugs being the more
expensive. One of the forms that are most popular for rugs that are
flat woven is the Kilm, along with Borcade and Soumak.
