Different kinds of gardens require different kinds of garden tools.
Hardware stores mostly cater for a wide range of tools, but there
are shops that specialize in the more expensive kind of garden tool
that shouts quality. Wherever you decide to shop, here are a few
pointers to advise you.
Do you have small garden or a large one? A small garden will not
require the same large equipment that would be of use in an
extensive one. A lawn tractor is unnecessary if you only have a
small strip of lawn. Another point to consider is who does most of
the gardening? Some tools are too heavy for use by women.
When you buy secateurs make sure the blade always stays sharp to
avoid damaging the plant. Look for models that have blades that can
be sharpened or replaced, models with tension control and with
sizes that best fit your hands. Secateurs usually cost around $50 -
$130.
Hedge trimmers or shears are handy - but only if you have a hedge,
or plan on growing one. Some hedge trimmers have curved blades to
stop branches from sliding out when cut.
Forks are used for turning and aerating compost and breaking up
lumps of soil. The cheaper ones are often not strong enough for
heavy soil, so go for sturdiness instead of price. Forks usually
cost around $30 - $100.
A shovel has a scoop blade and is best used to move around dirt and
garden soil. A spade has a flat blade great for cutting edges,
digging and dividing plants. The edge of a spade should be kept
sharpened for clean and efficient cutting will cause the least
amount of damage to plants. These are a basic garden necessity and
usually cost from $30 - $50.
A pruning saw is used for pruning trees and larger shrubs, while
secateurs are for plants like roses. Pruning saws have a narrow
curved blade that fits between stems or branches and easily and
cuts them as you pull the saw backwards. They are approximately
$27- $55.
A chipping hoe is a handy tool for getting rid of small weeds. The
Dutch or push-hoe is slightly more user friendly as the action
required to use it does not jar the neck and shoulder quite so
much.
A rake is also a basic requirement for the garden. The strong rake
with the flat head and sharp metal prongs is used for smoothing a
garden bed and getting out the last of the bumps and weeds. The
plastic rake is used to gather leaves and grass clippings only.
Gardening tools don't have to be expensive. Flea markets and garage
sales can be excellent places to pick up great tool bargain.

Many times we buy plants on impulse then find there is nowhere in
the garden that really suits them. Before buying plants carefully
examine your garden to see how much sun and shade it gets, whether
the soil is well drained or waterlogged and whether your aspect is
sheltered or windswept.
You'll then be equipped to go and buy the best plants for your
situation. Shade loving plants for the sheltered areas, sun-lovers
for the warm spots, drought resistant plants for the parched areas
which may be either sunny or shaded, and swamp plants for the
poorly drained parts.
But wait! Test your soil first, to determine the pH level of your
soil and what kind of nutrients you need to add, if any. Is the
soil acid or alkaline? Most plants prefer soil that is slightly
acidic, but there are some that must have alkaline soil to grow.
You can alter the soil's pH level, but it's much easier to simply
plant for the soil you have.
Now you are ready to plant. Well, almost. Will you plant in groups
or singly? If you buy 'one of everything' your garden may seem
rather spotty. Group plantings are organised, harmonious and you
can vary the color for interest.
Before planting out, place your chosen plants around the garden bed
in their pots to see how they will look. Re-arrange them until you
are satisfied. Grouping plants in sets of threes or fives usually
looks better than planting in groups of even numbers. Be sure that
you have an interesting combination of colors and textures of
plants.
Tall plants should go to the back, or the centre if your garden
will be viewed equally from all sides. Try to keep your plants away
from trees. The roots of trees are fiercely competitive and will
steal all the nutrients and moisture meant for your flowers.
The right color scheme is one way to maintain the harmony in your
garden. Imagine the color of the flowers when they are in bloom.
Some colors may clash with others, but can still be planted
side-by-side if they have a different blooming season.
Foliage color is also important. Many flower plants have silver,
grey or purplish foliage that is just as attractive as the flower.
This means that they are still attractive well past the blooming
season and so have added value.

The respiration of a pure air is at all times, and under all
circumstances, indispensable to the infant's health. The nursery
therefore should be large, well ventilated, in an elevated part of
the house, and so situated as to admit a free supply both of air
and light.
For the same reasons, the room in which the infant sleeps should be
large, and the air frequently renewed, for nothing is so
prejudicial to its health as sleeping in an impure and heated
atmosphere. The practice, therefore, of drawing thick curtains
closely round the bed is highly pernicious; they only answer a
useful purpose when they defend the infant from any draught of cold
air.
The proper time for taking the infant into the open air must, of
course, be determined by the season of the year, and the state of
the weather. A delicate infant born late in the autumn will not
generally derive advantage from being carried into the open air. In
this climate, till the succeeding spring and if the rooms in which
he is kept are large, often changed and well ventilated, he will
not suffer from the confinement. While he will, most probably,
escape catarrhal affections, which are so often the consequence of
the injudicious exposure of infants to a cold and humid
atmosphere.
If, however, the child is strong and healthy, no opportunity should
be lost of taking it into the open air at stated periods,
experience daily proving that it has the most invigorating and
vivifying influence upon the system. Regard, however, must always
be had to the state of the weather and to a damp condition of the
atmosphere the infant should never be exposed.
As it is one of the most powerful exciting causes of consumptive
disease. The nurse maid, too, should not be allowed to loiter and
linger about, thus exposing the infant unnecessarily, and for an
undue length of time; this is generally the source of all the evils
which accrue from taking the babe into the open air.

The term 'Homeschooling' basically refers to the process in which
one or more children of not more than 2 families are instructed by
parents or legal guardians, or a member of either household. The
laws that define homeschooling vary from State to State. The legal
requirements for establishing a homeschool also vary with the
State.
For most children, the actual process of learning begins much
before school. Many children already know their alphabets, the
names of animals, colors and other more complicated stuff before
they reach school. This is mostly due to the hard work of a member
of the family who has taken the time to teach the child.
Homeschooling is just a natural progression from here. Instead of
sending their children to a public school, parents make their own
curriculum and teach their children in ways that best suit the
child. This is homeschooling, in its most simplistic form.
Before you decide to go in for homeschooling, there are certain
important matters for consideration. First off, meet with parents
of other homeschoolers. Find out the pros and cons of
homeschooling. Then ask yourself why you would want to adopt this
method. This is a very important aspect, as the success of the
program depends on the clarity and sincerity of your purpose.
Next, it is time to consider the expenses of homeschooling. It may
cost anywhere between a few hundred dollars to a few thousand every
year. More importantly, you are also effectively shutting out any
job opportunity for one of the parents. It is only obvious that one
parent will have to stay at home full time to manage the
homeschool. A home-based business however is a great
alternative.
Are you qualified to take on homeschooling for your children?
Teaching is a continuation of your own learning process. With the
advent of the internet, information is aplenty. There are various
books and resources for those interested in homeschooling.
Go through the various methods of homeschooling and choose one that
is most suited to you. It helps if you know what kind of learning
style your child has. Also, find out what your child feels about
homeschooling before you start.
Every state has its own laws regarding homeschooling. For instance,
in North Carolina, you must first file a 'Notice of Intent' to
start a home school. In this you have to mention if the school is a
'Private church' school or a 'qualified non-public school'. The
persons providing the education are required to have at least a
high school diploma.
You have to maintain an annual record of the child's attendance and
disease immunization. Every year, the child is required to undergo
a standardized test. Each student attending the eleventh grade has
to take a nationally standardized test. These are the requirements
in North Carolina, but it is enough to give you a good idea of what
homeschooling entails.
Homeschooling may seem like a lot of fun and freedom from the
outside. However, things are seldom as simple as they seem.
Homeschooling is a lot of added responsibility and hard work. But,
if successful, it will forge a strong bond of love and respect
between parent and child, while providing your child with the best
form of education he needs.

Entertaining your children when school is out for the summer can
become quite expensive, especially if you enroll them in pricey
summer camps for a large portion of the time. However, many parents
feel that the alternative is to have their children sulking on the
couch while moaning about how bored they are, especially if friends
are all attending camps. Actually, there are plenty of ways to have
cheap summer fun with your kids.
Why not try a few of these budget friendly ideas?
Your local YMCA is a family oriented place with plenty of great
activities. Your children can go swimming, take a variety of
classes and even attend day camps for a very reasonable price. Most
YMCA’s have family memberships, which makes the classes more
affordable for families with several children. If you don’t have a
YMCA close by, check with your local parks and recreation
department to see if they are offering events for children and
families during the summer months. Many times, they offer low cost
art, sports and even cooking classes for kids.
Another great way for your kids to have fun this summer is to set
up events in your own backyard. Have them put together a circus.
After they’ve practiced the event and have the ring set up, friends
and family can make up an audience to view the final result. Don’t
forget to add some games and serve some refreshments that match the
theme, such as popcorn and corndogs. If your children don’t like
the circus, suggest that they put on a play, hold a pet show or set
up a fair.
If your children like collecting things, they can make a natural
history museum in a spare corner of the house. Then, you can take
field trips to local places so that they can create their museum
exhibits. Take them on nature hikes so that they can make rubbings
of tree bark and leaves. Let them take photos of local wildlife and
flowers, but be sure that you don‘t actually take home any
wildflowers, since these plants may be endangered.
Go to the beach and collect interesting shells and bits of sea
glass or visit the areas where your local rock hounds hang out. If
you have prolific gardens or you can get permission for them to
pick some flowers in someone else’s garden, your children can also
press flowers and mount them as part of the display.
If your children are budding entrepreneurs, they may have more fun
making money. Why not try a good old-fashioned lemonade stand? Just
be sure your town or city doesn’t have any ordinances that would
prohibit it before the kids set up. If they need to clean out their
closets and toy chests, suggest that they combine the lemonade
stand with a yard sale.
Finally, don’t forget about gardening. Growing their own produce
can be fun for kids, especially when they discover a two foot long
zucchini hiding in the garden bed.

Are you considered a senior citizen? If not, do you know someone
who is? Whether you are increasing in age or you are close to
someone who is, you may be a little bit worried about health. It is
no secret that most people’s health begins to deteriorate as they
age. Despite being a normal occurrence, there are many individuals
who take a number of steps to try and remain as healthy as they
can.
When it comes to staying healthy, there are a number of different
steps that are taken. Of course, the elderly, like all other
individuals, can benefit from healthy foods, as well as a regular
amount of exercise. In addition to a healthy diet and regular
exercise, elderly individuals could also benefit from the use of an
air purifier.
Air purifiers are electronic machines that are used to eliminate,
and sometimes even destroy, harmful air particles and bacteria.
Essentially, air purifiers make indoor air cleaner and healthier to
breathe. This is good for just about anyone, but it is especially
good for those who are considered senior citizens. As previously
mentioned, senior citizens are more likely to develop health
complications, such as the common cold. An air purifier can help to
reduce the chances of that happening.
If you are a senior citizen and you are looking to purchase an air
purifier for yourself, you may want to think about speaking to your
healthcare provider. While most healthcare providers are not
experts on air purifiers, they should be able to let you know what
you want or need to get out of an air purifier.
For instance, they may recommend that you purchase an air purifier
that not only traps, but also destroys harmful bacteria. This
information, as well as any other information that your healthcare
provider may give you, will come in handy when choosing the right
air purifier, especially one that best fits your needs.
If you are not a senior citizen, but you are interested in
purchasing an air purifier for a senior citizen that you know or
are related to, you may want to do a little bit of research, before
making that purchase. When doing a little bit of research, it is
important to keep a couple of important points in mind.
These points should include the size of the room in which the air
purifier would be used, the overall cost of the air purifier,
including filters, and the overall quality of the air purifier that
you are interested in purchasing. As mentioned above, it may be a
good idea for you to seek help or tips from a professional
healthcare provider.
When it comes to purchasing an air purifier, if you are a senior
citizen, you may want to think about shopping at a retail store
that offers discounts for senor citizens. These discounts are not
available at all retail locations, but a wide number of stores
still offer them.
These stores may include home improvement stores or pharmacies.
Even if you must pay full price for an air purifier, you will still
want to think about purchasing one. Despite having to pay full
price, you will likely find that the purchase is worth it, in more
ways than one.
As previously mentioned, if you are concerned with the health of
yourself or someone that you know, especially someone who is
considered a senior citizen, you may want to get an air purifier.
Whether you make that purchase yourself, ask for it as a gift, or
give it as a gift, you and anyone else that enters the residence
will likely be pleased with the purchase.

Parenting can be a frustrating experience especially if you cannot
seem to establish a harmonious relationship with your teenager.
There are times when you find yourself in disagreement with your
child because of the so-called generation gap. The key to having a
harmonious relationship with your child lies on how well you
understand them. Here are 10 tips on dealing with your teen and
understanding your child.
Set a boundary between your role as a parent or a friend.
Aside from being a father or mother to your child, you can also be
a friend to them. But sometimes you need to make a distinction
between being a parent and the same time a friend to your child.
Friends will always have the tendency to judge your child whenever
they confide their problems.
As parents, you cannot do this because of your care for the child.
Friends can be found anywhere but good parents is a rare commodity
these days.
Show Your Involvement
This is true especially if you are occupied with your work and
rarely have the time to be with your child. Being involved means
finding the time to be with them whenever you have a spare time.
Try to find information about your child's life, their thoughts and
feelings so that they will be at ease coming to you when they are
in trouble.
Train Them To Be Accountable
As a parent, you are responsible for preparing your child for adult
life. Teach them that if they want something, effort should be
exerted in order to achieve it. Money is not the important thing,
it is being responsible and independent which matters. Provide them
their allowance for jobs but don't pay them if they are not doing
their part. This way, you are training them to survive in this
world.
Listen To Them
As a parent, it is your job to listen to them and understand what
they want. You should avoid making any judgment even if they are
arguing or disrespecting you. Try to get the message that they are
trying to convey as it often means they need your help.
Explain Your Side
By letting them know the reasons for your decision, you are helping
them become good decision makers themselves. If you want your child
to be home at a certain time, tell them that you are concerned for
their safety. Even if they disagree with your decision, they will
accept it as adults.
Be There For Your Child
The most important thing in being a parent is letting them know
that you are always there for them. Providing support and letting
your child know that you are behind them is vital to their
development.
Tune In
Knowing and listening to their kind of music, what activities they
are involved in, the names of their friends is your
responsibility.
Be Flexible
It is good to set rules but there are always exceptions and there
are instances when you need to bend the rules that you set.
Share Your Interest With Your Child
Sharing interests with your child means you understand them better.
This means you are learning together and sharing your experiences.
You need to have some connection with your child other than having
an argument with who has the car key.
Keep Talking Even If Your Teen Will Not Listen
You may not know it but teenagers do listen to their parents. While
they may at times argue with you, your advice is well-entrenched in
their minds. Although they may seem passive with what you say, the
truth of the matter is it sticks. So never stop giving them
advices.
Follow these tips on understanding your child and you are headed
towards becoming a successful parent.

Health insurance often requires a mountain of paperwork that has a
lot of fine print. Unfortunately, this means that few people read
their plans thoroughly nor do they fully understand what their plan
covers or does not cover. Here are some common limitations in
health insurance coverage that you should know.
Some of the most shocking health insurance limitations are found in
the the fine print holes in the insurance policy. For instance,
many people have found that their health insurance did not cover a
routine or necessary medical procedure because they did not receive
an authorization code prior to the procedure or the hospital did
not correctly fill out the paperwork. Your medical claim can be
denied simply because the hospital used odd codes for your
treatment.
While any claims denied by the insurance company can be disputed,
this process is not only tedious, but time-consuming and draining,
especially for someone who is already ill. There is also little
success in winning disputed claims, which makes this option rather
limiting.
Another surprising health insurance limitation happens more often
than people realize. Imagine this situation: you are diagnosed with
a medical condition and need an operation. You research surgeons
and hospitals within your plan. You understand your plan's coverage
of hospital care.
You have your operation and then you find a massive medical bill in
the mail. Apparently your health insurance did not cover the
anesthesiologist or other specialists that may have consulted in
your operation. Thus, you have to pay these specialists for their
services, even though you were under the impression that your plan
would cover these costs associated with the surgery.
Such a bill can be in the thousands of dollars, and there is little
you can do to dispute the charges. The only way to avoid these
charges is to make sure that you ask before the operation who will
be involved and ensure that they are covered in your health
insurance plans.
Other limitations are put on a number of treatments. For instance,
you may need physical therapy or visits to a psychiatrist. Many
health insurance plans will put a limit on the number of covered
visits for such medical treatment. Without realizing it, you may
surpass the maximum visits allowed by your health insurance and end
up racking up huge bills.
Many people think that buying health insurance will cover them
medically, but this is only correct to a point. When securing
insurance, you should read through your health insurance package
carefully, and when you are about to undergo any expensive medical
procedure, be sure to consult your health insurance plan first.
